Product Description
In Bittersweet, Danielle Steel has written a novel for our times, a story of choices and new beginnings.

India Taylor lived in a world of manicured lawns and neatly maintained calendars: a merry-go-round of Little League, piano lessons, and Cape Cod summer vacations. With four wonderful children, India believed in commitment and sacrifice, just as she believed in Doug, the man she married 17 years before. For India, this was the promise she made, the life she had chosen--not the award-winning career as a photojournalist she once had. It was a choice she had never truly regretted. Until she begins to regret it with all her heart.

India couldn't pinpoint the exact moment. Perhaps it was the last time her agent called, begging her to take an assignment Doug insisted she turn down. Or perhaps it was when Doug told her he thought of her as a companion and someone to take care of their kids, and not much more. At that moment, the price of the sacrifices she'd made began to seem high.

And then, she met Paul Ward. A Wall Street tycoon married to a bestselling author, Paul lived life on his own terms, traveling the world on his own yacht. India hadn't planned to become Paul's friend. Anything more was unthinkable. Yet talking to Paul was so easy. India could share her dreams with him, and offer comfort when Paul suffers a heartbreak of his own. And while Paul urges India to reclaim her career, Doug is adamantly against it, determined to keep her tied to the home. But with Paul's encouragement, India slowly, painfully, begins to break free, and find herself again.

Rediscovering her creativity and her courage, India uses Paul like a beacon on the horizon, sharing intimate phone conversations with a man half a world away, a man who never stops reminding her of all that is possible for her. India is changing, and nothing in her life will ever be the same again. Not her marriage. Not her friendship with Paul. And when India is presented with an irresistible opportunity, she makes a heart-wrenching decision, leaving a safe, familiar place-and the people she loves there-to move into the terror of the unknown.

Bittersweet is her story, a story of freedom, of having dreams and making choices to find them. With unerring insight, Danielle Steel has created a moving portrait of a woman who dares to embark on a new adventure and the man who helps her get there. Her painful, exhilarating journey inspires us all.Amazon.com Review
Like the rest of her novels, Steel's 46th testifies to theinsatiable appetite for unrequited love and the success of TV'sLifestyles of the Rich and Famous. Meet India Taylor, thecoulda-woulda-shoulda been a Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist ifit wasn't for her meddling husband. Although they met in the PeaceCorps 20 years prior, Doug insisted she put down the camera, pick up abroom, and raise four kids in the comfy Connecticut burbs. However, after 17 years of carpooling, Little League, and Doug's revelationthat he's happy with a platonic marriage, India moves on to greenerpastures. She finds her cash cow in the form of Paul Ward,a.k.a. "Lion of Wall Street," who has a yacht called the SeaStar and likes to coo such things as "I think I'm a little crazy, but I love you." Although he may be senile and she is still married, the duo seem destined for each other as Paul slowly helps Indiareclaim her past and follow her passion. What's not to love aboutDanielle Steel? She starts so many sentences with the word andthat you start to do it yourself. And there's a run-on quality to thenarrator's consciousness. But she drips glamour, drops famous namesbetter than Robin Leach, and makes those pages fly so fast they coolyour face on the hottest beach. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Danielle- Love Affair is Over!
I was an early Danille Steele fan (never missed a new book), but her recent works in the past 5 years have left much to be desired.Repetitive, predictable story lines, repetitive, weak writing, pages filled with the same info over and over, oh, and did I mention repetitive?I finished Bittersweet because I always finish what I start, but I thought the storyline ridiculous, predictable, and contrived. After all of the buildup to get rid of the jerk (Doug) for his mistreatment of her, India jumped from the frying pan into the fire.Paul was in my opinion not a better man, just different dysfunctions. Maybe if Ms. Steele had spent a bit more time developing the story and not so much repeating herself, this reader would have felt differently.India was so much better than both Doug or Paul and should have waited until she had made it through her own healing process.Just because the author sped them all through it, doesn't make it real. Both India and Paul should have waited to get into another relationship. And, come on, amicably allowing the other woman to move into your house while you were away and coming home to an immaculate house and perfect children?Give me a break! Doug couldn't have gotten this kind of a woman if he'd been an angel!I won't be picking up Steele ever again.glad I only paid 50 cents for this one at a garage sale!So sad because this author has the stones to put out the real deal and she's sold out.I wonder for what?

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it - Classic Steel
This is classic Danielle Steel, along the lines of The Dating Game, my favorite of her works. This book has wonderful characters and a strong storyline. My only criticisms would be that India is weak when it comes to relationships, yet so brave when it comes to her career. And Paul Ward, as a billionaire, certainly has enough money to seek psycological counseling and get professional help with his post-grief guilt; yet he suffers along for a year. But despite these things, and Danielle Steel fan will love this book. And the narrator of the unabridged cassette version is especially wonderful.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better ones, but not outstanding
After reading many Danielle Steel books, I'm pretty much conditioned to her writing style. Its sort of a guilty pleasure.I have a love/hate relationship with her writing. That being said, I was ready to dive into this, knowing it would be saturated with sappy love searchers.

The book for the most part is an easy read and flows nicely. You want to go from chapter to chapter just to see how each situation is going to resolve itself. However, Danielle Steel is Queen of the "Happy Endings" books and you just know that no matter how horrible the storyline may go, it will always have a happy ending. What she COULD cut down on is the use of "...and you know it".Count how many times you see that.Every character uses it."That's not true, and you know it","Its what you want, and you know it."UUGHH I thought I would have screamed if I saw it again.

****SPOILER COMING UP - IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS, STOP READING***This time a woman (India Taylor) decides that being a stay at home mom is not enough and she wants to trek to faraway lands to take pictures of third world countries. Her husband is not happy about that and sees her as "someone he can rely on to take care of the kids"...(you'll see that sentence about a zillion times throughout the book)...she decides to tell him to kiss off and goes ahead with her plan.He divorces her, she falls in love with a multimillionaire vacationing down the road from her at Cape Cod.BUT, the millionaire is very married (to an award winning author by the way)...so they can't be together right?WRONG!!!!As luck (oops) would have it, she DIES in a plane crash...so they CAN be together after all!!!YAYYYYY!!!Happy ending....

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst
I love Daniel Stell books but this one was horible.I have to admit I didn't finsh it but I got tired of how her husband treated her and she did nothing about it.But from what I've read from other readers I didn't miss much by not finshing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet
A story of a woman named India Taylor, who after a number of years of marriage, discovered that she missed her career as a photographer. She was very talented and well respected in her field before she married. She missed the recognition that a career could give, although she still loved her husband and 4 children. Her husband, was narrow and difficult and could not see her personal struggle. In fact, he was totally against her starting up the career again. As the book progressed, India began to stand up to him because she did not want to lose who she was a person. In the end, she chose to pursue her dreams despite the obstacles. This was a moving and inspirational story with a romantic and happy ending! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really perfect
Thsi lady Bettina yeap doesnt give up on life but she does not know how to choose the right men in her life fooled by their looks & style disregarding their inner values.

The book was a bore, I was never excited to finish it to the end but I did, it adds nothing new to danielles profile except waste of our money & time.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Bettina
From a person that LOVES Danielle Steel, I thought this book was a little on the bad side.Bettina believes every guy when he says "I love you" and marries him.It is definitely a lesson for young women, not to believe every guy.Overall a good read for young readers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Loving
I thought this book was okay. It was basically about a girl growing into a woman and her many different marriages. This is not one of my favorites, but still worth reading. I wish in the end that Ollie didn't die, though!

5-0 out of 5 stars Agreat classic with inspiration
This book was originally given to me by my mother 11 years ago I loved the story line then, with all the hard times that she goes through . After moving out of state I found it unpacking some of the boxes and fell in love with it all over again it gives you hope to never stop trying. A good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
This is one of Danielle Steel's classic novels. Yes it's sappy, it's amazingly romantic, but it also has a great story. The woman in this book went through so much, yet she overcame it all. It's fun to read a book like this, because it inspires you to live your life as best you can. If you pick up this book, I don't think you'll regret it. ... Read more

Product Description
A violent crime brings together four lives in Danielle Steel’s sixtieth bestselling novel, the story of a mother’s courage, a family’s terror, and a triumph of human strength and dignity in the face of overwhelming odds.

Outside the gates of a California prison, Peter Morgan is released after four long years and vows to redeem himself in the eyes of the young daughters he left behind. Simultaneously, Carl Waters, a convicted murderer, is set on the path of freedom with him. That night, three hundred miles south in San Francisco, police detective Ted Lee comes home to a silent house; for twenty-nine years, he has been living for his job—and slowly falling out of love with his wife. Across town, in an exclusive Pacific Heights neighborhood, a mother tries to shield her three children from the panic rising within her. Four months after her husband’s death, Fernanda Barnes faces a mountain of debt she cannot repay, a world destroyed, and a marriage lost.

Within weeks, the lives of these four people will collide in ways none of them could have foreseen. For Fernanda, whose life had once been graced by beautiful homes, security, success, and stunning wealth, the death of her brilliant, brooding husband was already too much to bear. She simply couldn’t imagine a greater loss, until a devastating crime rocks her family to its core—and brings Detective Ted Lee into her life.
A man of unshakable integrity, Lee will soon become the one person who tries to save Fernanda’s family from a terrifying fate. Fernanda must draw on a strength she never knew she had. Racing against time in the underbelly of the criminal world, buffeted by the dark side of power, and unmoored by loss and betrayal, no one can predict where this tragedy will take them.

Danielle Steel brilliantly explores the collision of a shocking crime with the ordinary lives of its victims in a novel that mesmerizes from start to finish. Ransom is at once a riveting evocation of life’s inexplicable turns of fate and a testament to the human will to survive.

5-0 out of 5 stars worth five stars
I give the book Ransom five stars I think it deserves more than five stars.I thought the book was very good.I could not put the book down it was a real page turner. The suspense and the romance was really good in this story.
If you want suspense and romance I would highly recommend reading this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Predictable and Forgettable
As a first-time reader of a Dnielle Steele novel, I'd read that 'Ransom' was supposed to be a departure for her, into more 'action thriller' territory, rathe than romantic fiction.
She may want to re-think that career move!
'Ransom' has almost nothing going for it; the characters are one-dimensional, their dialogue vapid, their actions, at times, ridiculous.
The book suffers from an overload of exposition, introducing each character in the most long-winded way possible, and taking forever to get the plot moving. As others mentioned, there are some editing errors, leading to stilted sentences and paragraphs. Steele goes 'comma-happy' at times, as well.
Save yourself the time, and money, and just read the spoiler-laden blurb on the inside of the back cover.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book Ever
Ransom began with such promise. Then Steel ran out of ideas, and the next 150 pages repeated what the reader was told in the beginning. The ending was absolutely awful.Stating that everybody is crying because a mother and son are reunited is absolutely ridiculous. No one cared about the handful of dead police officers; according to Steel the entire SFPD would have died for this stupid kid.She should stick to Romance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice change of pace - high-adrenaline action and suspense
This is one of DS' more exciting novels, as far as a high level of action, drama and suspense. The characters were really interesting, especially the bad guys.I have only one complaint: after taking the reader through a frantic, exciting and heart-stopping 300 pages, the high moment of the book is recapped after it happens, explained by another character! What was the point of writing this really neat, enjoyable book, only to cheat the reader out of the best part of the story? After walking beside this character for 300 pages, I wanted to see the end of the story through his point of view.

Other than that, it was a good book to read, enjoyable, a diversion for Steel as an author from romance to thriller.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ransom
Peter Morgan just got released from prison after doing time for drug charges. He is a decent and attractive man, but is not able to find a job now because of his record. To earn money, he becomes involved in a plot to kidnap Fernanda Barnes's children to earn money from the ransom. At one time, Fernanda was married to a billionaire and was very rich. Recently her husband was killed (probably suicide) when he found out that he was bankrupt. The story covers the planning and kidnapping of one of the Barnes children. As always, it has a happy and meaningful ending, although this is not one of my favorite Danielle Steel novels. ... Read more

Product Description
Danielle Steel's fifty-first bestselling novel tells the story of an extraordinary man, the woman who loved him, and a bond so powerful it could never be broken. It is about finding the courage to let someone you love fly free....

The phone call came on a snowy December afternoon. Kate was certain it was Joe, the brilliant, visionary man who had been her soulmate, her driving force since the night they met, almost thirty-four years before. What she got was the one call she had never wanted, and didn't expect.

As the snow continued to fall, Kate's mind drifted back, to the moment when she and Joe first met. She had been just seventeen and he was young, powerful, dazzling, and different from any man she'd ever known.

It was just days before Christmas, 1940. The war is raging in Europe when Kate Jamison makes her debut in New York City. In a room filled with the scions of East Coast society and the leading political figures of the day, it is Joe Allbright who catches Kate's eye.

At twenty-nine, Joe is the brilliant protege of Charles Lindbergh, and already a legend in flying circles for his record-breaking speed and state-of-the-art airplane designs. All Kate sees is a tall, strikingly handsome man who seems at once awkward and larger-than-life, like a shining star -- just out of reach. Joe, too, is caught off balance by his response to Kate, seeing in this beautiful young woman vitality and youth, the lifelong soulmate he never expected to find.

As the months pass, they will meet again, forging a bond that will set the course of both their lives. Kate will go off to study at Radcliffe. Joe will skyrocket to fame in modern aviation. Joe's planes are his life, his passion. But irresistibly drawn to her, like moth to flame, he always comes back to Kate. Even after the long, dark years of World War II, when Kate was sure she had finally lost him completely, Joe returns.

Never willing to stay, always needing to fly away. As planes are for him, Joe is the passion in her life.

When the war is over, at twenty-four Kate wants marriage and a family. Joe wants the world, his limitless horizons, and the unique aviation empire he is building. Unwilling to wait any longer, Kate moves on with her life. But when a chance encounter brings them together again, the time has finally come to make a choice, one that will have profound consequences for them both for the rest of their lives.

Against a vivid backdrop of war and thrilling innovation, Danielle Steel breathes life into history, weaving an intensely human story that spans three decades, of two intensely different people who, in spite of themselves, are irrevocably woven into the fabric of each other's lives.

With rare insight and emotional power, she brings to life a tale of unconditional love, sacrifice, and compromise--the joining of two remarkable halves into a single, far more powerful whole. It is a novel of extraordinary grace and compassion from a master storyteller, perhaps the best story she has told.

2-0 out of 5 stars Read another DS book
There are too many Danielle Steel books to read, don't bother with this one. It was was good but you will hate the male main character, Joe.Joe is the most selfish, arrogant man.You pray that Kate gives him the boot.If only she did then we'd get to watch Joe cry over losing her once again. He wants her, he doesn't want her. Then she moves on and is fine and he doesn't like that so he wants her again. Unfortunately, she keeps taking him back. This book only provesyour mother is usually right (as much as daughters hate to admit it) They usually know what is best for us but it's not clear to us until later.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money with this one
This is the worst novel I have ever read by Danielle Steel. If you enjoy spineless female characters and emotionally abusive, childish men then you may like this story. I only kept reading because I was hoping it would get better; unfortunately, it only got worse. I didn't even finish the last chapter. I skimmed it, hoping (in vain) that Kate would come to her senses. Instead, she continues to pine after a man who has admitted over and over again that she will never come first in his life. I have no idea what Danielle Steel was thinking with this one. I think I'll stick to her earlier works and toss this one in the trash.

2-0 out of 5 stars Repetitive & wishy-washy
At first, I thought I was crazy when I couldn't get into this book, but found that others felt similarly.I couldn't get into it!Danielle Steele described the characters' feelings with the same words & emotions throughout the entire novel! All it seemed like was that Kate aged biologically, but not emotionally. At one point in the story, I was getting really annoyed at her for sounding like a nagging wife (though her concerns seemed semi-legit).Don't we have enough "nagging wives" across America?I really couldn't like Joe the way I could "like" other characters from Ms. Steele's other novels, probably because he admitted first and foremost that airplanes were his first true love.Yes, there are many men like that out there, but Danielle Steele novels are supposed to be an escape - and aren't supposed to be thinly veiled portrait of some man we all knew...

5-0 out of 5 stars unusual but lovely romantic novel
I recommend everyone to read this book. It will have you gasping for air when you close the book because you want to know whats next. I love it and you will to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lone Eagle
Another great story by Danielle Steel... This time she writes a passionate love story between a pilot and a young girl. Joe is a handsome and successful pilot and businessman. He meets Kate when she is 17 years old and still in college. Even though her mother disapproves, she begins to date Joe and falls in love. They begin to live together, but eventually Kate finds out that he does not want to get married or have children. She decides to end the relationship and marry her good friend Andy, who is a stable and loving husband.

Kate soon discovers that she cannot forget Joe. Even though she is married with a child now, she realizes that she is still in love with him and will always be. Fate brings them together again one day in New York City and their lives are changed forever.

A powerful love story filled with all the sole searching and passion that makes live meaningful! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Little Too Late
Did you ever watch a movie that was so drawn out, you felt like writing the plot yourself, just to get on with it?If so, then don't bother reading this book, as it was clearly not one of Danielle Steel's best.In fact, a teenager in a creative writing class could have finished it in less time, and probably with a better twist, as this book offered no surprises and was more predictable than watching Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park.

I must have read 200 pages of how Tanya, the talented, unselfish mother and housewife preferred her average, everyday life to the glamour of Hollywood before anything happened. And Steel hinted at the turning point so much that when the expected finally occurred, the rest of the story just fell into place, offering too little too late.

Her characters were just as dull as the plot.Tanya was too perfect, her husband was too predictable, her neighbor and former best friend was too convenient and straight from a soap opera, the Hollywood men in her life were too stereotypical, and her children were too accommodating, except for Megan who was a selfish brat and the most unrealistic of them all.

Most teens, even self-centered ones, would probably be mad at their mothers for not jumping at an offer from Hollywood, instead of sulking because Mom left during their senior year. And while disgruntled teens come in handy for secondary plots, Megan's problems resolved by themselves.

It would have been better if she got pregnant by one of the actors in her mother's screenplay, or if she somehow adjusted while her more good-natured twin unexpectedly livened up the plot. But instead, Tanya's life went on in a way that turned the ups and downs of a successful career, unfaithfulness, divorce, broken romances, an Oscar win, and the finding of a new soul mate into a straight line of dull and predictable events.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever
I only gave it a star because it wouldn't let me give 0 stars.

I know one doesn't read romance novels for sophisticated plots and intricate character development, but...

This is the most boring romance novel ever. The first half of the book just talks about how much she loves her life, how good-looking everyone is, how rich they are, how they never have any fights, how they get along beautifully, how the children never misbehave, etc.

Then the husband bangs the next door neighbor and dumps her, and no one seems to mind.

She finally meets The One in the last chapter.

Boring.

More annoyingly, is they keep talking about how sophisticated and intelligent she is, and yet never show us how sophisticated and intelligent she is. There's no witty dialogue or banter... not even the cheesy kind most romances provide you with. They don't even tell you much about what she is writing, what it is about. They just tell you it is very sophisticated and deep.

Boring. This book sucked. There are no good sex scenes, either, to make up for the lack of plot.

3-0 out of 5 stars what a fantasy
A suburban housewife on the brink of an empty nest is coerced into taking a job as a Hollywood screenwriter which includes a 2-bedroom bungalow at a luxury hotel, a limo and driver, room service, a jetted tub, cashmere bathrobes, TiVO, and a kitchenette stocked with all her favorite snacks PLUS she eventually wins an academy award along with the man of her dreams. If this isn't escapist fiction I don't know what is. It's the first Danielle Steel I've read in more than 30 years so I can't compare it to her other books, but I was surprised at how sloppy the writing was considering what a successful writer Steel is. Continuity lapses and blatant repetition were somewhat annoying, but it was still an enjoyable read. The dialog was smart and believable. I also liked that the details of the lovemaking were left to the imagination--no graphic sex scenes here. The outcome is predictable and the whole thing is more than a little contrived. But oh what a beautiful fantasy. If you are looking for serious reading, don't bother. But if you are in the mood for an unlikely daydream, enjoy--I sure did.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's happened?
While I thought it was a good story and didn't regret reading it, I felt it to be monotonous at times. What has happened? Her older works just left you feeling sad the book was over and wanting more! Didn't get it from this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars dreadful
As others have mentioned, Steel continuously repeats herself. Her latest books are nothing like her earlier ones.Got halfway through this book and couldn't stand another page.Don't bother buying and it's not worth a trip to the library to check-out. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
I bought this book thinking that it would be like some of her other books, but I agree with some of the other readers. This book was like reading it over and over again.Had the same sentence over and over just in different sequence order. It was a childish story. We had a death in a family member and it's been over 7 yrs and we still cannot get over it.My ex-sister in law took her more than 5 yrs to move on and start dating again. So this book is not even close to reality. If you love someone so much, it doesn't take you just 4 months to get over that person.I do not recommended this book to anyone to read.Very Very disappointed in Daneille Steel for even thinking in publishing it.She must of had a mood swing or something.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I have ever read
I just got this book for my daughter.I read it years ago and I still think it is one of the best books I have ever read!!!I agree that Danielle Steel's books aren't as good as they used to be but this one was fantastic!!!I am going to read it again after my daughter is done!!!!!I think The Ring was another awesome book by Danielle Steel!! And I always loved the Promise...although I think it is out of print!

4-0 out of 5 stars Heartwarmingly good
The story itself was compelling. It was sad, but you wanted to keep reading just to see what would happen. The ending waspredictable. It did bring out some emotion in me and kept my interest, so I would recommend this book, the story is good, just need to look past the writing at times. DS did repeat herself many times through out the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Was this a young adult selection???
What a ridiculous story line! From the way-too-perfect Johnny to the way his one true love got over him within a few months, this book was hard to swallow start to finish. The writing style made me look online for the recommended age of readership - I truly thought I was reading a teenager's book.Ms. Steele repeated herself over and over.

I have a library full of books in my home - from classics to beach reads. This is first time I threw a book out after reading it instead of keeping it on the shelves.Just seeing it there would have aggravated me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Johnny Angel
This is a little different than your typical Danielle Steel book. It's not hard to get into right from the beginning but it becomes a little far fetched. At first I thought "oh this isn't my type of thing", but I was drawn into it anyway and it was a very quick read. I didn't think I was going to enjoy it after it took a rather unrealistic turn, but it was interesting enough to keep me going and the end left me with a very happy, peaceful, and satisified feeling so I'm glad that I kept going. I believe that other Danielle Steel enthuisasts will also enjoy this if they are willing to keep their mind open to a rather unrealistic plot and wait for a very sweet ending.Like I said, it's a quick easy read... save it for a dreary Sundy and you will be happy you did. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unforgivably shallow
The whole book is unforgivably shallow. Don't buy it. Love is not just physical attraction or sexual interest. Why fall in love at first sight with Paxton? Is "smart intelligent" written on her forehead? Steel needs to write "so beautiful" "so intelligent" "so smart" "so innocent" so this so that.....bla bla bla over and over again, because her weakness as writer is that she CANNOT portray characters by their activities or dialogues!!! That's unforgivable, when she is making money as writer from both books and movies! Her works are basically for shallow idiots. Steel writes a dialogue "you look like a kid....". Here is a news-flash: being like a kid or acting childish does not make a woman adorable at all, most men get repulsed by it. But not Steel's male characters. Steel's male characters are all females in disguise. Steel CANNOT portray men at all.
Steel writes "they love each other so much" "they are so happy" they are sooo this they are soooo that.......this is her way of describing development of her stories, like written by a 6-year-old!!!
What makes Paxton so attractive so special? Steel's partiality about blond hair and blue eyes is so annoyingly prominent. In her books, blond is equal to beautiful! What if she was ugly? Wouldn't she be desirable then? This novel wouldn't have been written then?
What kind of name is Paxton by the way? Sounds like a washing machine. And one more thing, if 32 is old, what is 62 then? Museum-piece?

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book I fell in love with
I first read this fifteen years ago at the age of 17. It touched my heart so much at that age that I read it repeatedly until the pages fell out of it.I highly encourage people to read this if they have a soft spot for love stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars My all time favorite Danielle Steele novel!!!!!!!!!!
Drama, Drama and even more Drama!!!!!!!What a great book.It is a page turning roller coaster ride that actually makes you feel pain in your gut. This book is not only set in the time of the Vietnam war, it is actually set in the war.It is so well written and Paxton the main character is so well portrayed.Everyone has to read this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings...
I have always read novels by Danielle Steel, even though I sometimes find her storylines repetitive, sugar-coated, and far fetched.I felt "Message From Nam" was more of the latter. The main character, Paxton, falls madly, deeply, hopelessly, in love with three men (who each in their own way make her feel like she's "never felt before").However, I still was very engrossed in the story.I would recommend it; maybe I was distressed because she falls for these men so soon after the previous one has died! The ending was a bit long, but worth it!

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
The style of writing is simply awful. This is one of the very few books I could not finish. The story is mediocre, the prose dry, and the characters over explained and analyzed.I was disappointed from the beginning, but plodded on for almost 40% into the book, thinking about all the great reviews I read, until I couldn't stand it any more.I almost want to give it only 1 star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This is a good book. I love how well written it is and like most of her books Danielle Steel has left plenty of openings for sequals if she so wished eg. The bachelors parents etc. Like the other novels of hers that I've read so far I love the romance she puts in her books. I have to admit personally I like other books like The Rogue or A Good Woman but this was a great read just the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable!
I completely enjoyed this book. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an enjoyable read. I will agree with a previous poster that at times she seemed very repetetive in some of her descriptions and I found myself jumping paragraphs because I had seriously gotten the picture, but that was mostly in the beginning. And at times the conversations didn't necessarily seem believable, but for the most part they did and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. It was a great read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done!
I enjoyed this novel a lot more than I thought I would. It's a solidly told story of three friends, confirmed bachelors, and the strong women who melt through their resolve. The characters really captured my heart, with their interesting backgrounds. I grew to care for them as though they were my own friends, and I particularly connected with Carole. I also appreciated the description of the yacht voyage to various Mediterranean ports - fun!!! My one criticism is that Danielle Steel tends to get quite repetitive, and there were details that were unnecessarily repeated again and again - this story could have been told as effectively in about 50-75 fewer pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Liked it, but...
There was a lot about this book that I liked, but several things really irritated me:

1. Paris doing the dirty work for her ex-husband. In the beginning, when he dumps her, as he is leaving he asks if she will tell the kids and she nods. HELL NO! I would not tell the children, I would make him do it. He's the one who decided to leave.

2. Jim and Phyllis - OK, really? First of all, it mentioned when they met that Paris wasn't attracted to him. I guess the chemistry built after that. But then, when she meets Malcolm the writer, she tells Bix there is no chemistry and there's a long section in there about how chemistry is there or it isn't. This was incongruous within the book since she apparently was able to let the chemistry build with Jim when she didn't feel it at first.

Second, I cannot believe she hung in there for so long with this man constantly bringing up the dead wife. I dated a guy who constantly brought up his ex-wife and how horrible she was. That relationship lasted all of three weeks for me before I told him that he needed to get over it and to let me know when he did. I sure as hell wouldn't have wasted as much time as Paris did with someone who clearly wasn't over his dead wife.

3. It's mentioned by Bix when she takes the job that she won't have time for anything ever and yet somehow, she has time for weekends away with the first guy she goes to LA with and then to Napa with Jim. She also has a lot of time to date these guys apparently. Guess the job wasn't all encompassing as previously stated.

There were just a lot of inconsistencies within the story and a lot of things that no sane person would have allowed to go on forever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
again.. I listed to this book on the way to work.It was good.I'm beginning to like DS books on tape.. a lot!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun
I've read a lot of Danielle Steele's book and they seem pretty much all the same, it's all about rich and glamorous people. by reading the summary you already know the whole story. it gets boring if you read her books on and on. but this was fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting!!
Paris lived the perfect marriage and then her husband suddenly says, "NEXT!!!"lol.Pretty dramatic stuff and Paris weathered the storm and it paid dividends in the end.The story is chalked full of ups and bottomed out downs. And the sheer comedy of Paris' various dates are bound to make you laugh.I never would've guessed the book's ending though and it was a unique decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bravo! One of Danielle Steel's Best.
This is by far my favorite of Danielle Steel's novels. The character development is exquisite. Totally believable. She takes her time telling the story in this unabridged edition, and if you are listening to this story for the first time, this is the version I would highly recommend. I love the way the main character thinks things through, logically and thoroughly. Even as a fictitious character, she serves as an inspiration to women. I still think she should have clocked the "other woman" over the head with the punch bowl at her daughter's wedding, but she's so likable I can forgive her diplomacy. If you are a fan of Ms. Steel, you will love this book. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars O.K. Beginning for Danielle Steel
THe book was o.k.It took awhile for it to take off.The writing at the beginning was a confusing hodgepodge. The characters were very difficult to identify with because most of them were so unlikeable, including the heroine. The Steel formula in this, her first novel, is already present here....her filthy language....her shortening of names "GIL" for "GILLIAN" and "SAM" for "SAMANTHA".....and the beginning of her sentence fragments and use of prepositional phrases. It won't be among my favorite of her works and the ending was morbid and depressing and, like all her books, too pat.Its o.k. but don't expect great literature from Danielle Steel.I never buy her books when they first come out.I always wait until they're at least two years old so I can buy them for a penny or at a used book store.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Bad For A First Novel
The book captures the essence of California life in the early 1970's.Gillian is a divorced woman, a single parent who smokes marijuana and sleeps with a guy she's just met, without any kind of emotional angst or second thoughts. In most of her later novels, Danielle Steel's characters were sheltered and naive, and none were ever as wild or as badly behaved as Gillian, who sleeps around and uses extremely bad judgement as a parent.

The writing is rough around the edges, and I believe this is Steel's only book that was written in the first person. It's not the best writing, but it definitely showed some promising talent and gave a hint of the writer that she would eventually become. If Danielle Steel had stayed on this track, with the offbeat flawed anti-heroine, I believe today she would be an entirely different kind of author, offbeat and quirky, more literary than commercial. She would still be well-loved by her readers, but her books wouldn't be NYT bestsellers.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a waste of time and paper
This was the dopiest book I have ever read.First of all Gillian is a woman who thinks with her libido. This guy she falls in love with is a waste of space.Yet, she willingly gives up herself for this childish piece of work. Now, I know many women do this, but do we really have to read about it?

Danielle Steele has turned into a wonderful writer, but you'd never know it by reading this. All I can think is publishers had pretty low standards back in 1973, or she knew someone.I'd stick to her later works. This book, "Going Home", isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hate it!
This has to be one of her worst books. I cant connect with any of the charactors because they are so immature and just plain stupid. From the first day she meets the guy he's doing drugs and having sex with her on the beach and she knows he's living with another woman. And she insisted on attaching herself to him even though she had a child. She was totally selfish and didn't even think of how this would effect her little girl. And the fact that she thinks he loves her is just way to funny. Especially after he sent her away from him.
Aside from all that, she repeats everything she says at least 5 times. I found it hard to concentrate enough to read and where as I normally read 2 or 3 books a day this took me 2 days to read... I wouldn't recommend this to anyone... save yourselves the torture.

Product Description
Annie Ferguson was a bright young Manhattan architect. Talented, beautiful, just starting out with her first job, new apartment and boyfriend, she had the world in the palm of her hand—until a single phone call altered the course of her life forever. Overnight, she became the mother to her sister’s three orphaned children, keeping a promise she never regretted making, even if it meant putting her own life indefinitely on hold.

Now, at forty-two, as independent as ever, with a satisfying career and a family that means everything to her, Annie is comfortable being single and staying that way. She appears to have no time for anything else. With her nephew and nieces now young adults and confronting major challenges of their own, Annie is navigating a parent’s difficult passage between lending them a hand and letting go, and suddenly facing an empty nest. The eldest, twenty-eight-year-old Liz, an overworked, struggling editor in a high-powered job at Vogue, has never allowed any man to come close enough to hurt her. Ted, at twenty-four a serious and hardworking law student, is captivated by a much older, much more experienced woman with children, who is leading him much further than he wants to go. And the youngest, twenty-one-year-old Katie—impulsive, artistic, rebellious—is an art student about to make a choice that will lead her to an entirely different world she is in no way prepared for but determined to embrace.

Then, just when least expected, a chance encounter changes Annie’s life yet again in the most unexpected direction of all.

From Manhattan to Paris and all the way to Tehran, Family Ties is a novel that reminds us how challenging and unpredictable life can be, and that the powerful bonds of family are the strongest of all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mary
I was a bit hesitant to buy another Danielle Steel, but this book was riveting.
Interesting insight on when children fly the nest, and never really leaving your heart. The piece on travelling to Iran was fascinating~!

1-0 out of 5 stars a very annoying book in many ways
I also agree with the review that said many of the paragraphs were just repeats of the one above. There were so many times that the same thing was said over and over and over!!! That was just one of the problems with this book.I found the characters to be uninteresting and not very likable. It's the story of an aunt that dedicates her life to raise and take care of her deceased sister's three children.Once the children are grown and moved out the aunt (who never married and had children of her own) struggles with empty nest syndrome.I found the aunt to be way too uptight. She is a workaholic and just came across as really boring! The children each struggle with their own issues too.The boy Ted gets addicted to sex with one of his law school professors (who is much older than him and the mother of two kids) and gets trapped in a sex-based relationship he doesn't want to be in (but he keeps going back for the sex).I really just wanted to slap him a few times and tell him to start using his brain to think instead of his reproductive organ. Realisticly I feel no man his age would have put up with the things he was from the psychotic woman he was with (the woman told him she loved him on their first date and started talking about moving in and marriage after four weeks!! Most intelligent men would have run for the hills by then. He wasn't even sure he loved her and yet he kept going back to her even after her psycho behavior). It took Ted a lot longer and a more drama to finally wake up. I kept rolling my eyes and saying "puhhleeeeese" in my head.
The most annoying part of the book was when the youngest girl Katie goes to visit Tehran with her Persian boyfriend that she is in love with. They seem to have a very good and healthy relationship before this trip. The uptight aunt is of course freaking out over this fact. Even though the boyfriend is polite, respectful, intelligent and obviously loves her niece. The two love-birds go to Tehran and everything is going great until all of a sudden out of nowhere the boy's aunt and uncle who are hosting them decide that the boy must stay in Iran and not go back to New York. The boy tells them that he doesn't want to stay and furthermore his parents want him to come home but the uncle insist he must stay in Iran. I found this VERY hard to believe. It also really irritated me that the author was trying to depict this as being a typical mind-set for Persians which I know for a fact is not (I'm married to a Persian and am friends with lots of Persians). The fact that the uncle and aunt turned out to be crazy had nothing to do with the fact that they were Persian, which is what this author seemed to imply. I lost respect for her for that.
Overall this book had too many faults for me to recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value!
Book arrived in timely fashion, in excellent new condition and was a great read! Would purchase from this seller again.

4-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE QUICK READ
Annie Ferguson is a very talented architect who inherits her sister's three children to raise. She foregoes a life of her own for her career and the children. She finds it extremely hard to let go of the children when they all leave home.Ted is off to NYU for law school, Liz has an apartment of her own and works for a fashion magazine, and Kate the youngest is living in the dorm at Pratt Design where she is a student.Very enjoyable and rapid read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Star
Life seems perfect for Crystal as a happy 14 year old growing up on her fathers ranch. She's beautiful, has a perfect singing voice and a father who loves her. She meets Spencer when she's 14 and he is completly taken with her, even though he is in his 20's.

Spencer goes on with his life after they meet, even though she is always on his mind. Throughout the story, we see Crystal's life changing for the worse and its suprising how even though her life starts out so well all's not what it seems.

The main character in this book Spencer, to me seems some what weak. He has numerous chances to marry Crystal but lets Elizabeth, who later becomes his wife, minipulate his life and feelings for Crystal.

If your a Steel fan, you should read this but if you havent read any of her books before there are better out there.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Worst Shlock DS Has Ever Written
This was without a doubt the dullest of Danielle Steel's novels, and I'm a huge fan of her books.I couldn't finish this one, it was so boring!I read about a fourth of the way through and then I just read the last chapter.I absolutely don't recommend this book to anyone.

3-0 out of 5 stars great story, but frustrating to read!
Overall, I loved this book. Good storyline, it definitely keeps you interested (especially after the first few chapters)..but I found the book to get quite frustrating after a while. Crystal and Spencer have everything fighting against them it seems like and you begin to wonder if they'll ever be together. I also didn't care for the way she ended the book. I like what happended, but I didn't like how it was rushed into the last 10 pages of the book. It's like you finally get what you want and then you don't ever get to know the details of what happens. Also, I know what people mean when they say Crystal isn't really likable, only because she makes some pretty stupid decisions and it's kinda stupid how she turns down Spencer when she can finally HAVE him! I would recommend this book though, just be prepared to get a little anxious!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Interesting
I recently started reading Steel books because my mother in law bought me 10 at a garage sale and I've always wanted to try them. This book kept me interested , there were so many twists and turns that it made me want to keep turning the pages. I also love the books, message from nam, zoya, the gift, and kalidescope.

1-0 out of 5 stars What a boring book.
I have to agree with the recent reviewers. Star could have been so much better. I got literally sick of how much people fawn over the main character. I'm not understanding why there's a film made out of this either. ... Read more

Product Description
In my eyes she had always been old, always been mine, always been Granny Dan. Butin another time, another place, there had been dancing, people, laughter, love. .. . She had had another life before she came to us, long before she came to me. .. .

She was the cherished grandmother who sang songs in Russian, loved to roller-skate,and spoke little of her past. But when Granny Dan died, all that remained was a boxwrapped in brown paper, tied with string. Inside, an old pair of satin toe shoes,a gold locket, and a stack of letters tied with ribbon. It was her legacy, her secretpast, waiting to be discovered by the granddaughter who loved her but never reallyknew her. It was a story waiting to be told. . . .

The year was 1902. A new centurywas dawning as a motherless young girl arrived at a ballet school in St. Petersburg,Russia, at the age of seven. By age seventeen, Danina Petroskova had become a greatballerina, a favorite of the Czar and Czarina, who welcomed her into the heart ofthe Imperial family. But events both near and far away shook the ground upon whichshe danced. A war, an extraordinary man, and a devastating illness altered the courseof her life. And when revolution shattered Russia, Danina Petroskova was forced tomake a heartbreaking choice—as the world around her was about to change forever.

Granny Dan is about the magic of history. In it, Danielle Steel reminds us how littlewe know of those who came before us—and how, if we could only glimpse into theirearly lives, and see who they once were, there is so much we would understand andlearn. For in this extraordinary novel, a simple box, filled with mementos from agrandmother, offers the greatest legacy of all: an unexpected gift of a life transformed,a long-forgotten history of youth and beauty, love and dreams.Amazon.com Review
For over a decade, young Danina Petroskova has known no lifebut that of the ballet and her mentor Madame Markova. When a deathlyillness steals her from the stage, the young dancer is inconsolable, and, desperate to speed her recovery, Madame Markova agrees to handDanina over to the talented Dr. Nikolai Obrajensky fortreatment. Convalescing with the Romanovs at the Tsarskoe Selo palace,Danina learns to live in and love the world beyond the ballet. Andwhile grateful for Nikolai's companionship, she is startled by theintense emotions growing inside her for the married doctor. Drawn toDanina, Nikolai cannot ignore the passion between them either, and thestrength of their love quickly overpowers their resistance. SoonMadame Markova and Nikolai's wife remind them of their previousobligations, and as the Revolution hovers on the horizon, the two mustmake a decision that will change their lives forever.

As if aromance set in the twilight years of czarist Russia doesn't haveenough intrinsic pathos, Danielle Steel takes great care to give herhero and heroine the bittersweet combination of incomparable virtueand external duties. When the young prima ballerina and the marrieddoctor meet, they are drawn to the corresponding sense of integrityand duty in each other. However, when love and duty conflict, thestruggle is never easy.

Maestro Steel knows where the heartstringsare, and she plays them with her reliable talents. While students ofhistory may cringe at the simplified approach to the historicalperiod, readers just looking for a good time have found it. With thetough-but-loving mother figure, the ill-but-lovable Prince Alexander, the borrowed ball gowns, and the emotional grand jeté, thisbook has everything a TV movie needs except a small, cuddly pet. Putyour feet up, set aside your spoilsport logic, and enjoy this novelfor what it is: a classic romance. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I still cry every time I re-read it!
This is by far my favorite book by Danielle Steel. I seldom buy novels, preferring to check them out of the library. This is one of those rare novels that I purchased and keep on my bookshelf, re-reading it once or twice a year when I'm in the mood for a short, sweet tale. And I cry every time, even though the ending never changes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Book
I absolutely loved this book.Danielle Steel put you right in the girl's shoes. You could experience everything she was experiencing first hand.Keep Kleenex handy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Granny Dan
This was a great audio book. I loved the way it started with Ganny Dan's grandaughter talking at the beginning, then the story was told, with the grandaughter talking again about Granny Dan at the end.The story was both sweet and sad, yet ending well.It made me think of my own grandmother who also came to America from Russia about the same, and the stories my mother told me that her mother told her.Iwill listen to it over and over again.Great for the commuters!

5-0 out of 5 stars Granny Dan is Great Read
Granny Dan is an excellent book about a Russian Ballerina in pre-Revolution Russia. This book is shorter than most DS books, but it is an excellent read.It is very interesting and hard to put down after the first 5 pages.I highly recommend it.When you are reading this book, you forget what time it is so beware. It's hard to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT READ!!
I absolutely loved this book.I have read most of Danielle Steel's books and I always enjoy them but this is by far one of the best she has written so far.

It is a story of love found and fought for during a very difficult historical period in Russia.I laughed with Danina, smiled with each character, felt the excitement, and cried through each tragedy as if I was there. It brought to my mind so many thoughts of my own grandparents and others that have come before. It was riveting! ...
