5-0 out of 5 stars GOTHIC ZOTHIQUE
If Clark Ashton Smith has never yet achieved the cult status that H P Lovecraft has long enjoyed, then I for one am baffled as to why not. In my own opinion Smith is a better storyteller for one thing, but what seems to me to be completely beyond argument is that Smith is a far, far better writer. The man has a magnificent English vocabulary, apart from anything else. I suppose my own vocabulary is as good as most people's, I suppose I count as reasonably well read, but I am in no doubt at all that I have learned more new words from my intermittent reading of Smith than I have learned from any other writer over the last 30 years. He does not overdo it either. His style of writing is relaxed and natural, and although he is obviously showing off to a certain extent, he is so delightfully tongue-in-cheek that he takes the reader along with him. If I had ever known the word aspergillus in my early years as an altar-boy I had certainly forgotten it by the time I read these stories. As a typical instance of Smith in full flow, you may like the following, taken from The Dark Eidolon `The rays of the lamps that illumed it were saffron-red like the spilt ichor of devils, and they flowed on aludels and crucibles and black athanors and alembics'. Great stuff. In case anyone wants to know, the word eidolon itself is the original Greek form of the English `idol'. In Greek it meant any kind of image, and I know its use best from the fourth book of the Odyssey, in which Penelope conducts a dialogue in a dream with the `eidolon amauron', the `dim phantom'.

The print in this edition is very easy to read and the level of accuracy is good in general, so in any reprint the editors should correct the back cover, which says that there are three stories when in fact there are four; and also the reverse of the title-page, which mentions The Chain of Aforgomon instead of The Dark Eidolon. To be precise, the stories here are The Abominations of Yondo, The Dark Eidolon, The Charnel God and The Colossus of Ylourgne. They are all uncomplicated recreational reading, I can detect no parables, allegories or `messages' in them, nor do I want to. They are also, in my own decided view, very good quality, and I hope you will share my own enjoyment in reading them. ... Read more

Product Description
It is indeed strange that John Milwarp and his writings should have fallen so speedily into semi-oblivion. His books, treating of Oriental life in a somewhat flowery, romantic style, were popular a few months ago. But now, in spite of their range and penetration, their pervasive verbal sorcery, they are seldom mentioned; and they seem to have vanished unaccountably from the shelves of book-stores and libraries.

Even the mystery of Milwarp's death, baffling to both law and science, has evoked but a passing interest, an excitement quickly lulled and forgotten.

Product Description
Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) was a poet, sculptor, painter and author of fantasy, horror and science fiction short stories. His formal education was limited: he suffered from psychological disorders and for this reason attended only eight years of grammar school and never went to high school. However, he continued to teach himself after he left school, learning French and Spanish, and his nearphotographic memory allowed him to retain prodigious amounts from his very wide reading, including several entire dictionaries and encyclopedias. In his later youth he became the protégé of the San Francisco poet George Sterling, who helped him to publish his first volume of poems, The Star-Treader and Other Poems, at the age of nineteen. The Star-Treader was received very favorably by American critics. Smith made the acquaintance of Sterling through a member of the local Auburn Monday Night Club, where he read several of his poems with considerable success. The publication of Ebony and Crystal in 1922 was followed by a fan letter from H. P. Lovecraft, which was the beginning of fifteen years of friendship and correspondence. His other works include: Odes and Sonnets (1918) and Sandalwood (1925). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As the sun goes down over a wonderful series
The legendary Ballantine Adult Fantasy Series was approaching its final few volumes when this anthology appeared, although readers still hoped for many more years of it. Published in conjunction with its more classical literary companion, "Golden Cities, Far," it offered another superb selection of fantasy short stories & poems, complete with copious notes from editor Lin Carter.

While not drawing upon the work of quite so many fantasy masters this time around, Carter did give readers a more eclectic mix. So we have a short piece by Poe, a humorous but thoughtful fairy tale from George MacDonald, some high quality sword & sorcery from the likes of C. L. Moore (one of her best Jirel of Joiry tales) & Robert E. Howard (an ancestral memory tale, rather than more of the immortal but familiar Conan) -- and more besides!

Particularly interesting is a lost chapter from Mervyn Peake's "Titus Alone," and another fragment of Carter's own never-written epic "Khymyrium." Anything by Peake is worth reading, of course! And Carter's fragment is a reminder of what might have been, had he pushed himself past pastiche in the 1970s, rather than losing his way & much of his inspiration.

But there's a sense of something lost about this whole anthology, not only because the series as a whole was ending, but because the times were changing so much. The creative fire of the 1960s was fading, and fantasy would soon become one more mass-market niche, with plenty of new authors, but little of the magic that made the older works glow so brilliantly. Even the cover art was soon to change to something more generic, alas.

As always, you can find most of these stories in other collections now. But if you should come across a copy of this paperback, pick it up as a memento & treasure of a golden era in fantasy. Most highly recommended! ... Read more
