Product Description
... 2-0 out of 5 stars Tedious and unfunny
As other reviewers have said, this book simply does not measure up to the hilarious standard established in Tom Sharpe's earlier books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tom Sharpe is always hilarious
Of all the books Sharpe has written his character Henry Wilt is the most enduring. No matter where he goes or what he does poor Wilt seems to attract trouble and misunderstanding.Wilt in Nowhere shows that even when Henry tries to disappear and spend time alone bad luck and hilarious confusion pursues him.
I've been a huge fan of Tom Sharpe for years and as an aspiring writter myself I aim to emulate his style of far-fetched, creative humour.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really funny!
I'm not sure why there are so many negative reviews here but I read the book and I couldn't stop laughing (a few times my wife had to shush me because we were in public).A bitingly sharp (no pun intended) satire of the NHS (anyone who has had to deal with the NHS can well sympathise), Polytechs, English inner cities and the type of Republicans ruling the roost today seen through the hapless Wilt and his wife Eva.Every page is vintage Sharpe and the humour shines through with vigour.

3-0 out of 5 stars What's going on?
Well.I read the two reviews on this book and didn't believe them. Then I read Wilt in Nowhere and couldn't believe that.I just cannot believe that Tom Shape can write a book that is so unfunny. What is going on?We all love the outrageous Tom Sharpe, not this domesticated charicature. Was this book ghosted?Hard to believe, since the ghosts would have been a lot more Sharpish than is evident in this book. Not only did I fail to laugh as I read this book, I cried.I've lost my favourite author.Read every Tom Sharpe.Think I'll go back and read the earlier ones again.Better not to produce this kind of stuff and to leave a legacy to Tom Sharpe fans that until now was reliable in its riotous-ness.Like to forget this one ever happened.

3-0 out of 5 stars gone off the boil
I never thought I would say it, but since the reviewer before has led the way, I summon my powers to hurt and destroy and hold down my lifelong love for Tom Sharpe -- the real Tom Sharpe that is -- the TS of Porterhouse Blue, Wilt, Indecent Exposure, etc, etc.And I have to admit, with regret, that Tom Sharpe, usually so scaldingly hot, has gone off the boil with this latest adventure, which takes place in a sane world, well almost, and has none of the bite we expect from Tom Sharpe.Where has that farcical satyre gone? Like the previous reviewer, I think it has passed from the master and now resides in the likes of Robert Fox, who with his Red Fox Goose Green rekindles the grotesque fires of Sharpe in a riotous review of English village full of god-fearing fox-killers.The bumbling Wilt created by Sharpe has passed his mantel to 'the Colonel', who just happens to turn a normal situation into a naked orgy of the absurd.I read this latest Wilt and then I read Red Flag Blue Member, Robert Fox's second adventure of the Colonel.Sharpe's Wilt has become a cardboard character, not recognisable.Fox's Colonel, crazy like a fox, now wears the mantel of the King of the Absurd.Long live the legacy of Tom Sharpe, and long may his clones rekindle his fantastic view of the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST OF SAKI
Sharpest, wittiest, break-down-into-tears-with-laughter, Munro (a.k.a., Saki) has undeniably preserved himself in my heart forever as my favorite Edwardian humorist. We all know at least someone, perhaps a small town, who needs AN UNREST CURE.Or maybe you know a young couple "In the Family Way."This little tome has lots of lovely, sentimental names they might like!My special fave was Esme.I named my next cat Esme, as I wasn't in a family way, don't you know!

Written in Edwardian England pre-WWI, Saki's short macabre comedies are twisted, wicked fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Master of the short story
There may not be a greater master of the English short story.Saki (H.H. Munro) writes from a period that is recent enough to be somewhat familiar, but remote enough to provide a bit of an exotic feel to the settings. These short short stories (typically 5 or 6 pages) are an uninterrupted series of gems.In a storytelling style full of grace, charm, and wit, Saki is unstinting in his criticism of the selfish, the self-centered, and the self-absorbed.About the only humans who are spared his sharp utensil are children, who frequently consort with Saki in piercing his victims.Delicious fun.

I read this entire collection over about two weeks.I would not recommend reading Saki's short stories this way. Before reaching the midpoint, oneis so familiar with his style, approach, and aim that the element of surprise is somewhat dulled. These should be dipped into perhaps two or three at a time and then set aside for a month or two.Don't worry...they'll keep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilariously dark short stories
Probably the only sane response, as a writer, to Edwardian England was to skewer it mercilessly. And nobody serves up a finer kebab than Saki. These stories are clever and hilariously funny. I think part of their appeal is that, although Munro can be merciless, one always senses an underlying affection for his targets. It's also pretty clear that Saki's sympathies are with those who lack clout in the established power structure of Edwardian society (children, for example), which makes me like him all the more.

A very funny book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding collection
This is one of my favorite and most admired books, ever.An ideal collection of ideal short stories - witty, brief yet complete, and not a word wasted in creating tone and point.Funny and satisfying.Unsettling and creepy.Deliberate use of language and vocabulary that cuts and exposes. All of the above.Unforgettable: The charging stag. The baby playing with buttercups.Schartz-Metterklume.

Recommended without reservation, for a single sitting or a one-a-night from the bedside table.

5-0 out of 5 stars Darkly Humorous Revenge
Picador edition has wonderful, nicely written introduction that gives marvelous details of Saki's remarkable and short life, explaining well why his stories are usually so dark, and why he liked to take aim at stuffy old bats.

Nearly all of Saki's short stories are about some character exacting revenge upon cruel or shallow members of the British upper class. His writing sometimes feels labored and overwrought, with overlong sentences or ungainly descriptions. But his consistant style, sense of justice, and biting wit are the gems to be discovered within.

The earliest stories seemed to have a lack of balance between darkness and wit, but he did find his equilibrium and most of the later tales are deliciously satisfying.

Absolutely delightful reading if you liked Robert Altman's recent film Gosford Park, or if you are fed up with stuffy, mean upper class types. ... Read more
