Editorial Review

Product Description
Carl Sandburg is widely known as the great poet from Illinois, and especially remembered for his monumental three-volume biographical study of Abraham Lincoln. He was also a journalist, author of children s stories, and pathbreaking songwriter. This new collection of his writings conveys the excitement and tragedy of his times and his commitment to a movement for change.
Like the Wobbly s favorite son, Joe Hill, Sandburg created a rabble-rousing persona in order to provoke a revolution in everyday life. Sandburg s prose brings the romantic figure of the modern poet as a polemicist, an orator for the people, together with the figure of the journalist as a gallant, acerbic muckraker. This figure becomes a vehicle from which to disseminate a radical vision of modern democracy. The articulation of this modern world-view was what composed the Charles H. Kerr Company s house style for its Review, making it a forerunner of such crucial modernist literary organs as Poetry magazine; indeed, it was in the Review, not Poetry magazine, that the best of Sandburg s Chicago Poems first appeared. 2-0 out of 5 stars Carl Sandburg
Carl Sandburg was a very boring book, to me.It was a biography on a railroad man named Carl. This book started out with a chronology of Carl Sandburg's life.Carl was born in the 1860's and died in the 1960's, at the age of 93.After the chronology of Carl's life, the book resumes onto the beginning of Carl's life.He began as a cheap railroad man. Then, one day when he was about 25, he struck an oil well and became rich.Following, he paid for college and became a great college professor. He taught college until he retired at the age of 85.Eight years later, at the age of 93, Carl Sandburg died.I believe if this book was fictional with a little bit of adventure here and there, it would have been much better. Also, if it had som action at all, to me, the book would have been much better.Overall, I give the book Carl Sandburg, by Richard Crowder, 2 stars.

Product Description
When Illinois-born Carl Sandburg was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1951, it was the crowning achievement of his nearly half century career as a poet.At the time he was one of America's most popular living poets. His work embodied the American experience and spoke deeply to the hearts of the very people who inspired his greatest poems. For them, Sandburg symbolized America's innate integrity and boundless promise.
This volume contains the poems upon which Sandburg built his reputation and career. The four poems selected from his rarely reprinted first collection, In Reckless Ecstasy, provide a fascinating glimpse into his developing talent. They show him slowly breaking free of traditional verse forms toward his own voice.
This book features a deluxe cover, ribbon marker, top stain, and decorative endpapers with nameplates. ... Read more

The Sandburg I know is the Sandburg of 'Chicago' and 'The fog comes in on little cat's feet' and above all " Tell me if the lovers are the losers, in the tombs, in the cool tombs'
Memorable lines from the antholgies , a small selection of a lifetime of writing.

Amazon.com Review
Focusing on the articles Sandburg wrote, often pseudonymously, duringWorld War I for the International Socialist Review, PhilipYannella argues that instead of the famous folk poet, biographer ofLincoln, and sagacious patriot he fancied himself in later life, theyouthful Sandburg was "a political opportunist, a journalist who wasanything but objective and balanced, a far left radical even when heportrayed himself as a patriot." It is a fascinating and convincingportrait, and Yannella's book helps complete our image of one of the mostbeloved American poets. ... Read more
