Product Description
Irreverent, provocative, hip - and always funny - this guide to power and attitude offers women an intelligent alternative to the negative messages we hear every day from magazines, television and relatives. A Cynthia Heimel for a new generation, Susan Jane Gilman serves up uncommon wisdom and practical advice on everything from sex to politics, from turning shopping skills into a power tool to using man-catching techniques for salary negotiations. Be a Smart Mouth goddess when it comes to...* Beauty: Sure, beauty has the power to excite men. But so does a box of donuts. * Men: After eons of "civilisation" guys still have trouble understanding the word "no." Luckily, there's one word that's guy Kryptonite: "commitment." * Money: Feminists have condemned capitalism as patriachal and exploitative. They obviously never tried to buy tampons in Communist China in 1986. * Politics: Hey, somebody's gotta rule the world. It might as well be us. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat another piece of cake and wash it down a gin and tonic
This book is hilarious yet informative. Gilman tells it like she sees it in a way that doesn't make you feel stupid. She is extremely liberal in her views, so reader beware! It is very much written for the modern young woman. It's a quick, easy, and extremely FUN read.

3-0 out of 5 stars more vulgarity and insults than wit
As a pretty liberal femme, I should be the target audience for the book.I did find it to have some good points about women asserting ourselves in the world, hence the "OK" rating. However, the author just lacked the ability to really make it funny IMO, and as many wanna-be comedians do, fell back on being insulting and crude. Therefore, I believe it would have been better just as a short opinion piece, maybe an article in a magazine, without the drawn-out attempts at humor. She's got something of a good feminist message, but is no Erma Bombeck or David Sedaris in the comedy dept.

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED THIS BOOK
This book was on point, held no punches and had me LMAO.I would recommend every woman read this book once.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so smart
Eh...so I am glad I got this book from the library. I gave it two stars because well it wasn't what I thought. Instead of a how-to guide it was merely an opinion piece. Granted, some of the chapters had good information and little things to do in order to be more like a smartmouth goddess but a lot of the chapters didn't.

I also noticed that a lot of the concepts were socially based, if you are into sociology and like that kind of stuff then by all means, read it but this book was more rant rant rant and rave. I don't think it had any concrete substance or concepts besides opinions of the author. Yes, some of it was funny some of it was smart but most of it was just a waste of words. While I was reading it, I just pictured a really opinionated woman just going blah blah blah and it was just irritating. You know who I'm talking about...the really big nosed annoying voiced loudmouthed tacky dressing girl who thinks she's a know it all.

I can't really suggest any other books that are better or compare to this because I haven't read any, but if I find something empowering, to the point and knowledgable then I will let you know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic and Funny!
I flipped through this book in my local bookstore and knew I had to have it. I absolutely loved it! Susan Jane Gilman not only makes a lot of great points concerning feminism, love, being assertive, and more. Her sense of humor is great and lightens up the more serious issues.

I agree with most of her beliefs and opinions, and it was like reading a letter from a best friend for me. Being a Smartmouth Goddess is about being a strong woman and not losing one bit of your femininity.

If you consider yourself an open-minded modern woman, check this one out. It's a great title to put on your bookshelf. I believe that Susan Jane Gilman is an author is an author to watch out for. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good look at the Liberal/Conservative political hatreds
"Colombia: Territorial Rule and the Llanos Frontier" by Jane M. Rausch is a thorough and stimulating study. However, upon completion of this well researched book one will no longer think of the Llanos frontier as the source of brave warriors during the wars of independence or of the many myths of romantic, picturesque, freedom loving cowboys. Instead, one will discover a region where cattle rustlers and outlaws roamed the plains with impunity and terrorized local ranchers. Moreover, this book will reveal many of the political blunders of Colombia's obtuse Conservative Party.

Rausch does an outstanding job of documenting the political careers of four giant Colombian Liberals.Presidents' Enrique Olaya Herrera (1930 - 1934), Alfonso Lopez Pumarejo (1934 - 1938) and Alberto Lleras Camango (1958 - 1962) are examined in great detail. Rausch also does an excellent study of the legendary Colombian populist, Jorge Gaitan who was murdered before he could assume the presidency in 1950.Of great significance, the author demonstrates how progressive Liberal Party initiatives shattered draconian Conservative Party controls and vastly improved the standard of living for ordinary Colombians.

The text also includes population, tax, budget, crop and export data for the Llanos region. However the true value of the important book is that it objectively documents the inflamed political hatreds between the Conservative and Liberal Parties that preceded Colombia's brutal and bloody era appropirately called "La Violencia."

Product Description
Jean-Loup Amselle explores the issue of multiculturalism by delving into the history of France’s confrontation with ethnic difference. Amselle analyzes France’s relationship to Egypt, Algeria, and Senegal to show how ideas about difference and assimilation played out in French colonial policies and how these same tensions continue to be problematic as France grapples with cultural pluralism.

Amselle’s book has timely and wide-ranging implications. Arguing against the "liberal communitarian state" as it exists in the United States, Amselle contends that an overemphasis on difference can lead to what he calls "affirmative exclusion"—the flip side of affirmative action. The recognition of a multiplicity of ethnic groups in France, he asserts, creates an environment that fosters racism. "Despite an outward appearance of generosity, supporters of French-style multiculturalism, by promoting ‘affirmative action,’ run the risk of creating as many difficulties as there are ‘target groups,’ which they have helped identify and hence produce."

Calling on theories of racial difference devised by early anthropologists—most notably, Louis Faidherbe—and on the work of political philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Amselle makes historical and sociological sense of the debates over multiculturalism and the violence they engender. Toward a French Multiculturalism proposes directions for the future. ... Read more
