Product Description
We stood in the doorway of a fairly large apartment having a divan round three of its sides. This divan was occupied by ten or a dozen men of mixed nationalities--Arabs, Greeks, lascars, and others. They smoked cigarettes for the most part and sipped Mokha from little cups. A girl was performing a wriggling dance upon the square carpet occupying the centre of the floor, accompanied by a Nubian boy who twanged upon a guitar, and by most of the assembled company, who clapped their hands to the music or droned a low, tuneless dirge. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A master of atmosphere, of adventure, of the circuitous plot
A friend recently gave me a copy of Sax Rohmer's 1919 adventure, Dope. I read Trina Robbins' comics adaptation of it in Eclipse Magazine in the 80s and was sure I'd enjoy reading the novel. I read a lot of Rohmer when I was a kid- all of the Fu Manchu novels. I followed a comic book called "Master of Kung Fu" for years because the central character was the son of Fu Manchu who rebelled against his father's evil machinations. Rohmer was a master of atmosphere, of adventure, of the circuitous plot. His books are pure classic pulp, all about the story and with scant attention paid to character. His good guys are good and his bad guys are bad. What I didn't remember about Rohmer's work was that it is filled with racist and sexist images. His nonwhite characters are usually villains, his women dutiful wives or "fallen" women. When they don't conform to these templates they're a credit to their race or gender, having somehow broken their programming and risen above their base natures. I enjoyed Dope and recommend Rohmer's books to those who can bring a good dose of historical perspective to their reading and realize that the author's attitudes, while not universal, may have been common at the time. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars TALES OF SECRET EGYPT by Sax Rohmer
Tales of Secret Egypt is a 1918 collection of stories by Sax Rohmer, who is best known as the creator of Dr. Fu Manchu. There are twelve tales here; the first six concern mercenary relic hunter Neville Kernaby and his dealings with the mysterious Egyptian agent Abu Tabah, who always seems to be one step ahead of him. The last six stories are also Cairo-based but otherwise unrelated, and feature repeated themes of native myth and magic and the immediate and complete infatuation of Western men with Egyptian women.

Rohmer's love of all things Egyptian is obvious, and his depictions of the sights, sounds and smells of Cairo make that city come alive. And Rohmer is a fully competent writer; once in a while he will drop a delightfully clever sentence on the reader. But his problem is the stories themselves. Nearly every story ends with a twist or revelation in the final sentence, but most of these are not surprising or interesting, and some are painfully obvious. He also uses too much Arabic - there are far too many words whose definitions cannot remotely be guessed at from the context.

Tales of Secret Egypt contains throughout a matter-of-fact racism not unlike the racism Rohmer has taken flak for in his Fu Manchu stories. The reader can, without much effort, construct something of a hierarchy of races, according to Rohmer: Whites, Arabs, Indians, Chinese, and, at the bottom, blacks (every black in every story in this volume is a massive, stupid goon).

In the end, it's really just too bad that so many of the stories in Tales of Secret Egypt just sit there, because it would otherwise be a fine collection of exotic crime and mystery stories. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars fake
to anyone who's followed the series, this will be disappointing. This was written after death of Sax by someone who only glanced thru 1 or 2 books. Point: NEVER did Fu Manchu ever use snuff, nor did he ever "cackle" with laughter. Stick to originals

3-0 out of 5 stars WILL THE REAL NAYLAND SMITH PLEASE STAND UP...
This book, the 12th of 14 in the Fu Manchu series, is, like number 11 ("The Shadow of Fu Manchu"), a short, minor but nevertheless compact entry in the Fu saga. This time, the Fu man attempts to wrest control of his native China from the pesky Communists who have taken his country over. The book features one of the most complex plots of any Fu Manchu novel; indeed, it can be accused of being overplotted! But what makes this book so interesting, and sets it apart from all the other books in the series, is that we don't know until the very end whether or not Nayland Smith, our eternal Fu fighter from all the previous novels, is indeed Nayland Smith OR, as has been subtly hinted, a DOUBLE that Fu Manchu has concocted via plastic surgery. Brian Merrick, the young grad student who is enlisted by Smith to help him, is in a similar quandary, never knowing what the heck is going on, and the reader shares his puzzlement. Without knowing for sure whether Smith is indeed Smith, all stability is pulled out from under us, and all characters become suspect. The book is a true mystery that keeps you guessing, the action jumping from London to Cairo to the Big Apple.
This time around, there are practically no internal inconsistencies or inconsistencies with previous volumes. Nevertheless, there are one or two goofs. At one point, FBI man Harkness tells Smith that he has 11 men on the case: 4 FBI and 9 police. Does something not add up here or is it just me? Also, the description of one of Fu Manchu's agents, Nadia Narovska, with amethyst eyes and auburn hair, sounds exactly like the character of Ardatha in several of the previous volumes. Perhaps Sax Rohmer just had a thing for red-headed women with violet eyes. In any case, this is yet another fun thriller in the Fu Manchu saga. ... Read more
