Product Description

The text explores the concept of innovation, and analyse and compare different dimensions of innovation found in the various case studies; the transfer of innovation and the mechanisms of change; on an innovative online case study database on education innovations that has been designed to be used by education practitioners to support organizational leadership, international collaboration and reflective practice in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) eEducation Leadership initiative; on a project aimed to support the establishment of communities of practice for education practitioners facilitated through an extendable online database that can be used to contribute and share case studies of their own ICT-supported pedagogical innovations. It discusses roles of the teacher and the anticipated changes to the education profession at a system level, in the coming decade on the basis of emerging changes observed in the case studies, and leadership issues at the school level. The book analyses change mechanisms for different kinds of innovation and how different contextual and cultural factors interact to bring about the changes observed.

Product Description
Acclaimed storyteller Nancy Roberts takes the reader on a haunted tour of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia in this engaging new collection of thirty-three ghost stories and legends.

In North Carolina, we hear of the restless spirit who troubles visitors to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the phantom ship that, though lost in a storm at sea, sailed into Beaufort Harbor for a final farewell. South Carolina provides the backdrop for tales such as that of the Union soldier killed at Charleston's Fort Sumter--more than a century later, a tourist is startled to discover the eerie, blue-coated figure of the soldier standing next to him. And in Georgia, we encounter ghostly pirates doomed to sail the creeks and inlets of St. Simons Island forever without rest, as well as rambunctious child spirits who roll pool balls down the hallways of a Savannah bed and breakfast, just as they did when their family lived in the house following the Civil War.

These new tales and classic legends, all collected firsthand by the author, reveal a thrilling undercurrent to some of the southern coast's most popular destinations. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fair but with inaccuraccies
Nancy Roberts is a good storyteller, but where 'Ghosts from the Coast' runs into trouble is with the history of the area. The story about Moon River Brewing Company ('Mystery at Moon River') is a typical example. She states that pirates walked the streets of Savannah, a statement which is more myth than fact anyway, but she goes on to claim that Edward Teach, Calico Jack Rackham, and Captain Charles Vane were once in Savannah. Well, Edward Teach (also called Blackbeard) died in 1718, and Savannah wasn't founded until 1733. Rackham was hanged in 1720, the same year Vane died. So the history of the area does not support her story.

In another instance, she talks of slaves at the Olde Harbor Inn (also in Savannah). But the structure was built in 1892, and slavery had ended with the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. The construction with beams on River Street also wasn't built out of salvaged wood from sailing vessels, at least not in that time period, which is another claim in the book. The seaport was established enough by 1892 for enormous heart pine beams & rafters to make up the majority of building materials, and they are obviously milled expressly for that purpose.

Nancy Roberts is not a historian, but then again she doesn't claim to be one, either. She is a very good storyteller, with a whole host of books to her credit. But the historical innaccuracies will bother those readers out there with a grasp of history and a craving for a correctly-told story set in a specific time period.

4-0 out of 5 stars Three Coasts of Ghosts
I have been a fan of Nancy Roberts for quite a few years. This latest book of hers is a great addition to her body of work.Covering ghosts in three states (coasts) North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, Nancy Roberts is her spine tingling best.Whether mean ole pirate ghosts haunting a tavern in Savannah, or a tragic lover endlessly driving his coach on the annivesary of his death, the collection of stories is truly varied. You'll want to read this book with others around you. ... I purchased this book to get myself in the 'mood' for a trip to Savannah, Georgia.I found the stories unengaging, the attention to detail poor (Interstate 80 is not in Georgia), and the writing style did nothing to make the mainly second-hand narratives exciting or interesting. It was all I could do to make it through the Savannah portion. The stories are bland and the retelling is even more bland. This book's ghost stories make 'America's Most Haunted City' Savannah sound like your average city. If you're looking for good ghost stories, this is not your book.

Product Description

Society's love affair with information has led to a proliferation of media that shows no sign of abating. Not surprisingly, such materials constitute an increasingly vital part of any library's collection, and a particular and ongoing challenge to its catalogers.

For over two decades, Cataloging of Audiovisual Materials and Other Special Materials has served as the place to go for catalogers of nonprint materials around the world.Individual chapters deal with cartographic materials, sound recordings, videorecordings, graphic materials, 3-dimensional artifacts & realia, and kits; all of which are substantially updated; while two additional sections, Electronic Resources, and Serials, have been completely rewritten.

Each chapter begins with a discussion of the general problems a particular media presents, followed by a statement of applicable AACR2 rules and an overview of existing Library of Congress rule interpretations. Facsimiles of source material, with appropriate coding/tagging, subject headings, and call numbers appear throughout.

Product Description

This rigorous but brilliantly lucid book presents a self-contained treatment of modern economic dynamics. Stokey, Lucas, and Prescott develop the basic methods of recursive analysis and illustrate the many areas where they can usefully be applied.

After presenting an overview of the recursive approach, the authors develop economic applications for deterministic dynamic programming and the stability theory of first-order difference equations. They then treat stochastic dynamic programming and the convergence theory of discrete-time Markov processes, illustrating each with additional economic applications. They also derive a strong law of large numbers for Markov processes. Finally, they present the two fundamental theorems of welfare economics and show how to apply the methods developed earlier to general equilibrium systems.

The authors go on to apply their methods to many areas of economics. Models of firm and industry investment, household consumption behavior, long-run growth, capital accumulation, job search, job matching, inventory behavior, asset pricing, and money demand are among those they use to show how predictions can he made about individual and social behavior. Researchers and graduate students in economic theory will find this book essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars The better thecnics for econometry.
This book is very important for the clearity and the elegancy of the mathematic methods that the auctor uses for explicating the application to macroeconomy. From the measure theory we arrive at theorem of the fixed point and the finite difference equations. It is important also the duality betwwen production and consumption.

5-0 out of 5 stars good book fo macro

1-0 out of 5 stars A reader
I have never, e*v*e*r encountered a worse book in any field in my entire life. Ok, so chapter 4 and 9 are cute - but you know what, you really don't need to write a book to publish 30 pages of material that is actually worth reading.

I had a clever teacher who once said: "If you want to pick mushrooms, go to the forest" - well, if you want to learn Math, take the bus and head to the math department. The presentation is completely unclear, there is no motivation and the math is treated in a ridiculusly simplified way.

According to SLP, to prove a theorem, all you need to do is make assumptions - no need to motivate why you make them - that would be overkill, rather leave it to the reder to motivate (as an annoying exercise).

I dream of the day a Mas-Collel of macro economics comes around and writes a comprehensive macro book. Until this day, I am left wiping my behind with chapter 1-3; 5-8; and 10-End. Oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first step in the methods
This book is a first great step into the theory and results that you need to really understand the technicalities behindcurrent research on Dynamic General Equilibrium Macroeconomics.
Further, it's an excellent complement of Sargent and Ljungqvist's Recursive Macroeconomic Theory. ... Read more

Product Description
This work is targeted at practitioners and researchers who pursue large-scale system change involving multiple organizations and hundreds of people. It looks at how radical change can be achieved in public policy by "change agents" - often people outside government who push for change using certain policy entrepreneurship and innovation tactics. The authors' ultimate aim is to build an understanding of radical change in open systems - systems without clear boundaries that can cross group, organizational, regional, even national boundaries. The authors follow a single case - educational reform through public school choice in Minnesota - and its six policy entrepreneurs over a five year period to determine the dynamics of radical system-level change. ... Product Description

Latent growth curve modeling (LGM)-a special case of confirmatory factor analysis designed to model change over time-is an indispensable and increasingly ubiquitous approach for modeling longitudinal data. This volume introduces LGM techniques to researchers, provides easy-to-follow, didactic examples of several common growth modeling approaches, and highlights recent advancements regarding the treatment of missing data, parameter estimation, and model fit.

The book covers the basic linear LGM, and builds from there to describe more complex functional forms (e.g., polynomial latent curves), multivariate latent growth curves used to model simultaneous change in multiple variables, the inclusion of time-varying covariates, predictors of aspects of change, cohort-sequential designs, and multiple-group models. The authors also highlight approaches to dealing with missing data, different estimation methods, and incorporate discussion of model evaluation and comparison within the context of LGM. The models demonstrate how they may be applied to longitudinal data derived from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (SECCYD)..

Key Features

· Provides easy-to-follow, didactic examples of several common growth modeling approaches

· Highlights recent advancements regarding the treatment of missing data, parameter estimation, and model fit

· Explains the commonalities and differences between latent growth model and multilevel modeling of repeated measures data

· Covers the basic linear latent growth model, and builds from there to describe more complex functional forms such as polynomial latent curves, multivariate latent growth curves, time-varying covariates, predictors of aspects of change, cohort-sequential designs, and multiple-group models

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible
I'm a PhD student who is interested in the subject and wanted to do some background reading when I had a chance. I purchased a Kindle ebook because it seemed perfect -- cheap, portable reading. After receiving the book, I am very, very disappointed. The text is illegible. This is not the first time I have had problems with Amazon regarding their electronic book offerings... but it will be the last.

The results are horrible. The publisher (Sage) apparently just converted this to the Amazon book format without any concern for legibility or quality. The result is that all of the equations are blurry, and the subscripts and superscripts are completely illegible.

There are a number of problems with the Kindle edition that neither Amazon, nor the original publisher, seem to care about.

First, the equations in the text are too small to read. Additionally, they are contained in the text as images, so even if one tries to zoom in on an equation, you simply get a larger blurry image. (Hint: the publisher should use SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics and not a lossy image file format that they chose to use.) The size of the equations, which are inserted in the text as images, are the smallest font size possible, so even when you increase the font size, the equations remain at the smaller size (since they are captured as images).

In terms of the text, well, here too the Sage book falls flat. While Sage books are generally high quality it is often hit and miss as to whether the text of the booklet is a pleasurable read (whether or not it is an easy read is another matter!). The text overall is uninspiring but informative... however, given the problems with the equations just mentioned, there is no point in purchasing the book.

Do yourself a favour and take out any Sage books from the library. Don't bother with buying this.

By the way -- the sample version of this book does not contain any equations. It would have been nice if it did!

Product Description
With a continued emphasis on interpretation and analysis,The Press and America remains the classic authority on the history of mass media in the United States. Recognizing that the development of America's journalism is inherently and integrally related to the cultural identity of its people, the heart of this book is an examination of American life and the American media. The Press and America traces how major events in U.S. history were covered by reporters, editors and broadcasters and how other writers, advertisers and advocates influenced and continue to influence events in this country. While examining the media's influence on the course of events, this text also points out how events have determined the shape and character of the media. Within this framework, the authors relay the special story of the men and women of journalism and of the institutions and traditions they created. Expanded coverage of women in journalism, with coverage of Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, Dorothy Thompson, Helen Thomas, Dorothy Day, Doris Fleischman, Gloria Steinem, and many other less known but important women. 4-0 out of 5 stars Novelizations of stories, interesting, but not as "real"
My 8th grade son decided to do a history project on haunted battlefields of the Civil War, and I purchased four books on the topic. After his project was finished, I read the books myself. I have no prejudice that there is no such thing as ghosts. But as these books don't bill themselves as fiction, I do have standards for nonfiction writing, against which I'll measure the four books:
1. Ghosts of Gettysburg, by Mark Nesbitt (the 1st of 5 by him, I believe), rated 5 stars
2. Civil War Ghost Stories & Legends, by Nancy Roberts, rated 3 1/2 stars, rounded up to 4
3. Civil War Ghosts, by Daniel Cohen, rated 4 stars, targeted at the younger reader
4. Ghosts and Haunts of the Civil War, by Christopher K. Coleman, rated 4 stars

Don't get me wrong, I didn't give Nancy Roberts 3 1/2 stars because she doesn't know how to write. Her writing is lively and reading this book was fun. It's just that, compared to the other books I read, she does a lot of novelization, making up conversations, etc.You don't have to do that to write an entertaining book, as my reviews of the the other books attest. What her embellishments do is make her book feel more like fiction story-telling.The best of the books make you want to visit the sites to see if you just might possibly see a ghost yourself. Roberts' book reads more like good ghost stories. She does include "Legends" in her title, though, so, to give her her due, her purpose in this book probably is just to reel good yarns!

There is one exception. That is her chapter on "Richmond's Union Heroine".This sighting is taken from Roberts' original conversations with a tour guide, who cites from a diary and family conversations. The whole story rings true, and is the best in the book. Not to mention heartbreaking.I figured I'd only keep the highest rated books and give away the others. But, because of this one story, I am keeping Nancy Roberts' book for my library.

There is no bibliography, and fewer direct references and dates than in other books. To me, this was a drawback. But it may not feel that way to someone just looking for a good tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars Civil War Ghost Stories & Legends
This book is an excellent read.Fast paced and chalk-full of interesting history.Nothing boring about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it !

I highly recommend this book !

5-0 out of 5 stars civil war ghost stories and legends
A great book. Very easy reading and very informative.Great account of battles of the civil war and ghost stories surrounding it.I would highly recomend this book to anyone interested in ghost stories and the civil war.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hauntingly Poignant
I just finished watching 1951s "The Tall Target" about an assassination plot on the life of Abram Lincoln aboard a moving train. Abram Lincoln and the train got me thinking about a story I had once read. And then I remembered it. It was from Nancy Roberts' "Civil War Ghost Stories & Legends." I pulled the book from the shelf and there it was. Being a Civil War buff I bought this book several years ago attracted and intrigued by the title. It had never occurred to me that with all the horrors, suffering and death on America's battlefields during the Civil War that the emergence of ghosts and related supernatural haunts would come to surface. The particular story that I remember most strikingly was "The Night Train Passes." It is all about the reappearance of Abram Lincoln's funeral train. It is spooky. This entire book is spooky. There is something about the images of the Civil War that makes this collection of stories so intriguing, personally haunting yet poignant. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Product Description
Whereas most of the leadership literature has focused on direct, interpersonal leadership, few researchers have examined indirect leadership or the leadership of organizations. Of course, direct, personal leadership plays an important role at all levels of the organization. However, we focus here on how leaders use strategy, structures, and systems to create the conditions that stimulate others to meaningfully contribute to the overarching goals of the organization. We therefore explore the role of the strategic leader as an "architect." In this role as strategic architect, we examine how top-level leaders create organizations wherein leadership is developed, knowledge is created and disseminated, meaning is shaped and shared, and where the vision cascades to all corners of the organization. We also explore the "darker" side of leader discretion to show the deleterious consequences of leader power. Finally, we examine the complex nature of organizations and the roles of leaders in adapting the organization to the environment in which it operates.

The six major sections in this book coincide with these aspects of the leader's architectural focus. The first chapter in each section provides a short theoretical introduction. Following the theory chapters are application chapters, highlighting the practical implications of the theory with real-life examples. The sixth section explores the relationship between complexity theory and strategic leadership.

*Examines indirect leadership - the leadership OF organizations
*Explores how leaders exercise leadership indirectly through structures, processes and systems that stimulate others to contribute to organizational goals
*Contains six major sections: leadership development, knowledge management, influencing and shaping meaning, leader discretion, vision cascading, and complexity theory and the networked organization ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars North Carolina Ghosts & Legends
Enjoy a good ghost story or legend? Then this is the book for you. Especially if you also have an interest in North Carolina. North Carolina Ghosts & Legends, as the title indicates, covers many old ghost stories and legends from the mountains to the coast. Stories include "The Ghost Comes for Blackbeard", "The Unearthly Music of Roan Mountain", "The Mysterious Hoofprints at Bath", "The Little Red Man", "Devil's Tramping Ground" and "The Battle of the Dead".

I found the stories to be very interesting. Nancy Roberts' writing style draws you in and makes you feel like you're there. Many chapters have pictures, some of which have apparitions added by a photographer... ... Read more
