An excerpt:

"You've got to get him, boys--get him or bust!" said a tired police chief, pounding a heavy fist on a table. The detectives he bellowed the words at looked at the floor. They had done their best and failed. Failure meant "resignation" for the police chief, return to the hated work of pounding the pavements for them--they knew it, and, knowing it, could summon no gesture of bravado to answer their chief's. Gunmen, thugs, hi-jackers, loft-robbers, murderers, they could get them all in time--but they could not get the man he wanted.

"Get him--to hell with expense--I'll give you carte blanche--but get him!" said a haggard millionaire in the sedate inner offices of the best private detective firm in the country. The man on the other side of the desk, man hunter extraordinary, old servant of Government and State, sleuthhound without a peer, threw up his hands in a gesture of odd hopelessness. "It isn't the money, Mr. De Courcy--I'd give every cent I've made to get the man you want--but I can't promise you results--for the first time in my life." The conversation was ended.

"Get him? Huh! I'll get him, watch my smoke!" It was young ambition speaking in a certain set of rooms in Washington. Three days later young ambition lay in a New York gutter with a bullet in his heart and a look of such horror and surprise on his dead face that even the ambulance-Doctor who found him felt shaken. "We've lost the most promising man I've had in ten years," said his chief when the news came in. He swore helplessly, "Damn the luck!"

"Get him--get him--get him--get him!" From a thousand sources now the clamor arose--press, police, and public alike crying out for the capture of the master criminal of a century--lost voices hounding a specter down the alleyways of the wind. And still the meshes broke and the quarry slipped away before the hounds were well on the scent--leaving behind a trail of shattered safes and rifled jewel cases--while ever the clamor rose higher to "Get him--get him--get--"

Product Description
1920. American writer of mystery novels known for their humor and ingenuity. The book begins: The city turned its dreariest aspect toward the railway station; blackened walls, irregular and ill-paved streets, gloomy warehouses, and over all a gray, smoke-laden atmosphere which gave it mystery and often beauty. Sometimes the softened towers of the great steel bridges rose above the river mist like fairy towers suspended between Heaven and earth. And again the sun tipped the surrounding hills with gold, while the city lay buried in its smoke shroud, and white ghosts of river boats moved spectrally along. 5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Roberts Rinehart - more than a mystery writer
I write blog reviews for The Kindle Blog Report, but am expanding into reviewing books on the Kindle as well.

In 1915, at 38 and with three children, Mar Roberts Rinehart left for Europe (alone) to cover World War I for the Post. She toured Belgium and was received by King Albert, taking his first authorized statement regarding the war since its start. She interviewed Winston Churchill and Queen Mary in England, toured hospitals and the French and English lines. Her collected articles were published in Kings, Queens and Pawns, later on in 1915.

More than this book, I advise everyone to read a biography of Rinehart, Had She but Known: A Biography of Mary Roberts Rinehart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars if you like vintage mysteries laced with the supernatural....
...then this is a great book!It is actually two short novels in one binding, and would serve as an excellent starting point for anyone who has never read a Mary Roberts Rinehart mystery.

Her writing style is excellent and timeless.Mysteries and character are central to both novels; supernatural aspects are very subtle and therefore all the more believable."The Confession" is a wonderful look at the psychology of fear."Sight Unseen" starts with a seance (a pass-time that was all the rage when this book was written) the unexpected results of which lead to a murder inquiry.

To say anything more about either story would reveal too much.If you like a vintage British "country house" kind of mystery, the type Agatha Christie did so well, then here you will enjoy the American equivalent.Mary Roberts Rinehart was very prolific and wrote many types of books. But it is her mysteries that have endured the test of time...and this volume is a great starting point.

Also highly recommended from this author:The Red Lamp, The Album, The Case of Jennie Bryce. ... Read more

an excerpt from CHAPTER I:

I GO TO PITTSBURG

McKnight is gradually taking over the criminal end of the business. I neverliked it, and since the strange case of the man in lower ten, I have been a bitsqueamish. Given a case like that, where you can build up a network of cluesthat absolutely incriminate three entirely different people, only one of whomcan be guilty, and your faith in circumstantial evidence dies of overcrowding. Inever see a shivering, white-faced wretch in the prisoners' dock that I do nothark back with shuddering horror to the strange events on the Pullman carOntario, between Washington and Pittsburg, on the night of September ninth, last.

McKnight could tell the story a great deal better than I, although he can notspell three consecutive words correctly. But, while he has imagination andhumor, he is lazy.

"It didn't happen to me, anyhow," he protested, when I put it up to him. "Andnobody cares for second-hand thrills. Besides, you want the unvarnished andungarnished truth, and I'm no hand for that. I'm a lawyer."

So am I, although there have been times when my assumption in that particularhas been disputed. I am unmarried, and just old enough to dance with thegrown-up little sisters of the girls I used to know. I am fond of outdoors, prefer horses to the aforesaid grown-up little sisters, am without sentiment (amcrossed out and was substituted.-Ed.) and completely ruled and frequently routedby my housekeeper, an elderly widow.

In fact, of all the men of my acquaintance, I was probably the most prosaic, the least adventurous, the one man in a hundred who would be likely to gowithout a deviation from the normal through the orderly procession of theseasons, summer suits to winter flannels, golf to bridge.

So it was a queer freak of the demons of chance to perch on my unsusceptiblethirty-year-old chest, tie me up with a crime, ticket me with a love affair, andstart me on that sensational and not always respectable journey that ended sosurprisingly less than three weeks later in the firm's private office. It hadbeen the most remarkable period of my life. I would neither give it up nor liveit again under any inducement, and yet all that I lost was some twenty yards offmy drive!

It was really McKnight's turn to make the next journey. I had a tournament atChevy Chase for Saturday, and a short yacht cruise planned for Sunday, and whena man has been grinding at statute law for a week, he needs relaxation. ButMcKnight begged off. It was not the first time he had shirked that summer inorder to run down to Richmond, and I was surly about it. But this time he had anew excuse....

When it was all over Mr. Sam came out to the spring-house to say good-bye to me before he and Mrs. Sam left. I hated to see him go, after all we had been through together, and I suppose he saw it in my face, for he came over close and stood looking down at me, and smiling. "You saved us, Minnie," he said, "and I needn't tell you we're grateful; but do you know what I think?" he asked, pointing his long forefinger at me. "I think you've enjoyed it even when you were suffering most. Red-haired women are born to intrigue, as the sparks fly upward." -- "Enjoyed it!" I snapped. "I'm an old woman before my time, Mr. Sam. What with trailing back and forward through the snow to the shelter-house, and not getting to bed at all some nights, and my heart going by fits and starts, as you may say, and half the time my spinal marrow fairly chilled -- not to mention putting on my overshoes every morning from force of habit and having to take them off again, I'm about all in." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Vintage farce
Where There's a Will was first published in 1912. It's an old-fashioned American love story set in a "take the waters" style of health resort.

The narrator Mini is the spring-girl, and in keeping with her bright red hair, works hard, speaks her mind and makes the place go. She's the real doctor in the establishment, knowing just how many glasses of water every guest should drink, and the proper course of baths for each.

The natural spring water is secretly doctored with a pharmacopoeia of ingredients and smells like medicine. Mini learned how from her father, now deceased, who was the guiding spirit of Hope Springs before her.

When the story opens, the estate has just been left to the grandson of the previous owner - on one condition. Young Dick Carter must come back from his wanderings and run the business successfully for two months - or the property goes to charity.

When Dick fails to show up on the day of the deadline, Mini and Dick's other supporters hire a drifter to impersonate him. In fact Dick does arrive in time, one minute to midnight, but the fake Dick Carter (Alan Pierce) has already been presented to all and sundry.

Complications arise thick and fast. Mr. Pierce, though penniless, is an educated gentleman and won't follow orders. Dickie has secretly married an underage wife. Her sister is engaged to marry a prince, and any sort of scandal could scotch it.

The plot is a merry muddle of love stories and intrigues. I enjoyed it, with reservations. The vintage farce was almost too farcical for me, and I'd probably recommend Rinehart's mysteries before this novel. But as a curious slice of life in bygone America, the book is definitely interesting. ... Read more

a selection from the first story:

I. AFFINITIES

SOMEBODY ought to know the truth about the Devil's Island affair and I am going to tell it. The truth is generally either better or worse than the stories that get about. In this case it is somewhat better, though I am not proud of it.

It started with a discussion about married women having men friends. I said I thought it was a positive duty it kept them up to the mark with their clothes and gave a sort of snap to things, with out doing any harm. There were six of us on the terrace at the Country Club at the time and we all felt the same way that it was fun to have some body that everybody expected to put by one at dinners, and to sit out dances with and like the way one did one's hair, and to say nice things.

"And to slip out on the links for a moonlight chat with you," said Annette, who is rather given to those little pastimes, the most harmless in the world.

We were all awfully bored that Sunday after noon. Most of the men were golfing; and when you meet the same people all the time day after day, dinner after dinner, dance after dance any thing new is, welcome. Really the only variety we had was a new drink now and then. Some one would conic home from his vacation with a brand-new idea in beverages and order one all round, and it was a real sensation.

That was all we had had all summer for excite ment, except the time Willie Anderson kissed Sybilla she was his wife on a wager. They had been rather cool to each other for a month or so.

We would sit on the terrace and the conversation would be about like this:

"There's the Jacksons' car."

"Why on earth does Ida Jackson wear green?"

"Hello, Ida! When d'you get back?"

"Yesterday. Bully time!"

Just in time to save us from utter boredom some body would yawn and remark:

"Here comes the Henderson car."

"Jane Henderson's put on weight. She's as big as a house! Hello, Jane!"

"Hello, everybody! My goodness! Why did I come back? Isn't it hot?"

More excitement for a minute and then more yawns. It was Ferd Jackson who suggested the affinity party. He had heard about what I had said on the terrace, and he came to me while Day was playing on the links. Day is my husband.

"Had a nice afternoon?" he asked.

"Only fair. Day's been underfoot most of the time. Why?"

"How'd you like a picnic?"

"I would not!" I said decisively. "I hate cold food and motoring in a procession until you choke with dust and Day getting jealous and disagree able and wanting to get home early."

"Poor little girl!" said Ferd, and patted my hand in a friendly way.

Ferd was a good scout always; we got along together pretty well and sat together at dinners whenever we could. He never made love to me or anything like that, but he understood me thoroughly, which Day never took the trouble to do. It is absurd, now that it's all over, to have the others saying he was my affinity or anything of the sort. I never cared for him.
