5-0 out of 5 stars Fun read
I became a fan of Rinehart after reading " Tish ". It's a madcap adventurea great read.It needs to be read in the context of the era it represents and sadly, because of this, there are deragatory terms for the lower classes of the day. The book would have been better if the people who edited it for digital access could have deleted those references.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a fun read!
Read the Circular Staircase last night and had to start on Tish right then!Mary Roberts Rinehart is my new favorite author. This book is funny and as good read today as it was when first published.I wish I could have met her, both Tish and Mary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gave as a gift
I actually didn't read the book, I gave it as a gift, but the receiver was very pleased and enjoyed it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd love to know Tish
This is not one of Mary Roberts Rinehart's mysteries, yet it has bits of mysteries in it. Tish leads her friends in various adventures because when Tish sets her mind on it, she does it. The book is great fun, and I enjoyed it. I just discovered there is a second volume of Tish, and I can't wait to read it! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming
Ms. Rinehart starts out as tho this is a child's story, but it seems to be a mixture of a children's tale, a light adult story and then a mystery/adventure. The story is written with charm and humor. Light reading, yes, but I found it hard to put down. I believe children could enjoy the story also. It is easy reading. The little prince is a very lonely little boy with a very big future. All he would like to do is have the life of a normal boy once in a while. His grandfather is dying, he is next on the throne and he is in danger. I have found Ms. Rinehart's writing to be excellent. Her books all seem to be quite different from each other, they are written in such a manner that the time period does not make the stories feel "old-fashioned". ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Bat
I bought these books based on the first review and read The Circular Staircase first, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Then I read The Bat expecting it to be as good as Staircase. I was very disappointed. Not only did I think the plot failed to measure up, but the writing style seemed pedestrian. I hope more of her stories measure up to The Staircase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent early Rinehart collection
These are some of the earliest novels Rinehart published. Not all are mysteries but they are all well done and a lot of fun to read.
Rinehart's style is very easy and conversational, a little wry and sometimes very funny.
Her most popular book, The Bat, is a reworking of an earlier piece called The Circular Staircase both included here.
I enjoyed reading all of these stories. None of them seem dated and I found myself looking forward to getting comfortably into another Rinehart tale.
I've visited her later works on Amazon and clicked the "I'd like to read this on Kindle" button, and maybe one day we'll get the rest of Mary Roberts Rinehart on Kindle. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Than I Expected
I agree that this novel is a bit slow moving at first..but like any good book the suspense builds. Mary Roberts Rheinhert wrote a variety of novels and this is one of her best. The character of "K" is slowly built up. The romance blooms on a street with a variety of different people all with different wants and needs. Somehow K brings it all together.

Good book for a rainy afternoon, a short easy read.

3-0 out of 5 stars K is OK
This is a drama about the relationships between the people in a neighborhood of a small town and in the hospital where some of them work. I found the first half of the book to be a bit drawn out and uninteresting, but it improves in the second half. The author gets in a wide variety of things- jealousy, revenge, unrequited love, murder, family ties, mystery. She does a good job of getting inside of people's heads. If you have spare time this book is OK to read, but if you pass it by you aren't missing all that much.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not what you think
Both the title and date conspire to give the idea that Tish is a old-fashioned little posy that our great-grandmothers would have chuckled over.Actually these books are unexpectedly fresh.I can't describe them beyond saying that they concern three middle-aged ladies who think nothing of speeding, hijacking, robbery, race-fixing, boiling mountain lions, and attempted murder in the interest of justice or true love, all the while retaining membership in the Temperance League and the church.(Whose minister, Mr. Ostermeier, they rescue from bandits in the Rocky Mountains, in spite of the fact that his wife wears showy earrings.)
Roberts lacks the precision of someone like PG Wodehouse and the plots can ramble a little. But if you like comic novels these are well worth reading.
(If you're feeling cheap, you can read the first two Tish novels for free on Google Books.)
And look the Indian who sells encyclopedias and reads Nietszche. ... Read more

The rather extraordinary story revealed by the experiments of the Neighborhood Club have been until now a matter only of private record. But it seems to me, as an active participant in the investigations, that they should be given to the public; not so much for what they will add to the existing data on psychical research, for from that angle they were not unusual, but as yet another exploration into that still uncharted territory, the human mind. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Murder will out!
In this case it's a pretty young woman who sniffs out the murder, in her role as amateur medium.

The plot starts innocently enough with the Neighborhood Club. Six highly respectable neighbors meet each week for dinner, and after dinner take up various subjects. Then one week, clever old Mrs. Dane decides to entertain the club with a séance.

Unfortunately, Miss Jeremy, the "sensitive," is not just doing parlor tricks, but appears to have some genuine supersensory powers. She rambles on alarmingly about a murder that has just taken place in the neighborhood.

The death of Arthur Wells turns out to be thoroughly disguised as a suicide. Only an equally thorough investigation can hope to reveal the truth. But the members of the Neighborhood Club proove surprisingly daring at detective work, for a group made up of a doctor, an attorney, a editor, their wives, and a little old lady in a wheelchair.

Sight Unseen was first published in 1921, a bit past the golden age of psychical research, but then this novella has a decidedly old-fashioned flavor. Considering that the book is only 100 pages, each character is delightfully well defined. The narrator, a gray-haired lawyer easily flustered by adventure, is particularly charming.

Sight Unseen is a gem. I enjoyed everything about it - the somewhat vintage style, the quirky psychical subject matter, the bumbling action scenes, and the narrator`s wistful reflections on the unknown. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mystery
Wow, I really enjoyed this old book.Plot was great, well thought-out - well executed.Very interesting reading, the author's tone that is.I love mysteries, and this was top notch.I've heard nothing but good things about this author, and being a Christie fan, after having read this one (my first of Reinhart's), I know I want to read all of her mysteries.I know she wrote other types also, but since she is known as the American Agatha Christie, I'm assuming there are plenty that are of the mystery venue for me to enjoy. If this book was any indication, I'm in for some very good mystery reading.Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it
I really enjoyed reading this. The plot had several twists that I wasn't expecting, and it held my attention. Sometimes the 'vintage' books are better than current ones!
thanks!

4-0 out of 5 stars Kindle Review: 2/1/2004 edition: Doable Pittsburgh Flood Yarn
Written in 1912, the incidents in this story are told from the standpoint of a past-her-prime manager of a boarding house. The events portrayed occur during and after a flood that takes place in 1907. Pretty easy to read, with a nice plot twist at the end. Also, fairly short, just an afternoon's read. This Kindle edition was adequate, no editing issues of note, just the usual line break/margin unevenness. Add ½ star if you have special interest in the "lower Allegheny" area (south of?) Pittsburgh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not at all dated
This book was written in 1912, but unless readers take the time to check out the publication history in the front of the book, they will probably never guess that this book is almost a century old.The Case of JennyBrice is still an intriguing murder mystery with a realistic heroine.Whatstrikes me most about this (and others by Rinehart) is that as you read, you don't think, "This is an amazing book to have been written 100 yearsago."You think simply, "What an amazing book."This is a very shortbook, actually more of a novella, which makes it an excellent book to readwhen you can take a day just to enjoy a good mystery.

The Case of JennyBrice is atmospherically set during a flood in a boardinghouse of a poorPittsburgh neighborhood. From the very beginning, Rinehart develops a realsense of place.Unlike too many amateur detectives in novels, this heroinehas a believable reason for being involved in the case.Again, seen as aproduct of 1912, Miss Pittman is an especially extraordinary woman, buteven without that in mind, she is a convincing character. The Case ofJenny Bright has been referred to as not one ofRinehart's mostoutstanding mysteries, but in light of the stiff competition from her othernovels, that is not really a criticism.

Compared with many of today'sbetter mysteries, The Case of Jenny Bright holds its own.It is not just acuriosity because of its age; it is a fascinating mystery in its own right. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Torn between two lovers, feelin' like a fool
I'm woman enough to admit this old tale got me a bit teary-eyed. But isn't that the sign of a good book, when you come to care so much about fictional characters?

It's the very beginning of World War I, before America enters the fighting. Sara Lee Kennedy is a young Pennsylvanian woman whose life is already planned out by society, if not herself. She's engaged to marry Harvey soon, and settle down to a drawn out life of having babies and dying old. But something's happening to Sara Lee. As she and her church society pull together to sends funds and supplies to the beleaguered Belgians, Sara Lee feels the call to do something more. She actually wants to go over to the front lines and open a soup kitchen, a haven for the poor soldiers to have something to eat, a cup of coffee and a dry place to rest for a moment. Of course Harvey is totally set against this. Let the foreigners take care of themselves is his opinion. But Sara Lee has the backbone to defy convention and travels by herself to England.

While there she meets Henri, a Belgian spy who constantly risks his life to gather important tactical information for his country. He aids Sara Lee into smuggling herself into Calais, a city under martial law and right next door to the front. With Henri and others' help, Sara Lee takes over an abandoned, bombed out house and begins her life-fulfilling work.

Henri finally confesses he's fallen in love with Sara Lee, but she's a real enough character to question her own feelings. She loves Henri, but is she IN love with him? And what about Harvey, who's constantly badgering her in letters to come home. She loves him, doesn't she? She's made a solemn promise to return and marry him, she can't go back on that.

Who will Sara Lee chose? Will she even survive the war TO chose? You'll have to read the book to find out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
A must read. First book from this author that I have read, now I am looking for more titles from her.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book, But Cheats
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the fast pace and chilling story, I was struck by how this book completely disregards the most fundamental rule in mystery stories: giving readers enough clues (no matter how twisted or incidental) to actually solve the crime on their own. I can't say more without spoiling the end of the novel, but I think this book would have made for a more satisfying read had the author played a little more fairly with her audience. As it is, I would highly recommend this book as a good horror novel, but not as a mystery.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun To Read
This book, written in 1914, is great fun to read. The plot is relatively simple and the number of suspects limited. What adds to the fun are the mores of the early 20th century and how they differ from our own.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chilling
This was the first book I ever read by Ms. Rinehart and it was a thrilling surprise. It would make an excellent film. Product Description
1930. American writer of mystery novels known for their humor and ingenuity. The novel begins: I have wrenched my knee, and for the past two of them here in the library, a nurse at ten o'clock each morning with a device of infernal origin which is supposed to bake the pain out of my leg, and my thoughts for company. But my thinking is cloudy and chaotic. The house is too quiet. I miss Judy, busy now with affairs of her own, and perhaps I miss the excitement of the past few months. It is difficult to take an interest in beef croquettes for luncheon out of last night's roast when one's mind is definitely turned on crime. For that is what I am thinking about, crime; and major crime at that. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another classic from a great mystery writer.
Mary Roberts Rinehart was the American Agatha Christie. Both were great mystery writers. While Christie was justifibly famous for her ingeneous plots, in my opinion Rinehart was the better writer. Furthermore, Rinehart had an uncanny ability to creat and sustain throughout each of her books an atmosphere not merely of suspence but of foreboding. Although reading a Rinehart novel is great fun, it is also rather scary. Her classic story The Door is no exception. If you like well-written mystery novels that make you want to keep the door locked while you read them, read The Door -- and all of Mary Roberts Rinehart's other classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars An early psychological mystery
Rinehart has created a fascinating hero in this mystery, and he's doomed to suffer mightily from her investigations into character.

Dick Livingston is 32 years old and lives with his elderly uncle and aunt. Both Dick and his Uncle David are doctors in a town that values all the old-fashioned virtues. Dick is perfectly happy with his life until he falls in love with Elizabeth, a lovely young woman who sings in the choir.

He's not comfortable with marrying until he clears up certain mysteries in his past. It seems Dick lost his memory ten years back. His Uncle David found him desperately ill in a remote cabin in Wyoming, restored his health and led him out of the mountains in a strangely surreptitious manner, as if Dick were some kind of fugitive.

Could he, indeed, be a fugitive? Uncle David is keeping something back. Dick decides to return to Wyoming, where he lost his previous self, and find out who he really is.

Rinehart's book, while both a mystery and a love story, is also an exploration of psychological questions. Psychology was young when this book was published (1922), and Rinehart caught the fever of examining the nature of mind. Her hero is really two people - each separately influenced by circumstance - with a wall between them. The reader anxiously awaits the breaking point that will bring down the wall.

I liked this book a lot. It may not represent the latest scientific thinking, but it showed an adventurous intellect in its day. I always enjoy looking through a window in time, seeing how people thought and lived a century ago. Aside from all that, the story is engaging, full of interesting characters and surprising developments.

4-0 out of 5 stars fun, old fashioned mystery

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun read!!
What a great freebie, this book is fun and the author uses language beautifully.I highly recommend this book, I am excited to read more of her books!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great story!
I love Mary Roberts Rinehart. Many of her books are different (my favorite is "K") but this one is a good murder mystery. It is written in the style of the 1920's so the women are a little overly dramatic. Picture the damsel in distress with her hand to her mouth..

I got the Kindle version for free and you can't do much better than that! If you have not read any of her books I suggest you start. She is one of the few authors who had the capability to write in different genres, so she was adept at drama, crime, mystery and even one coming of age book "Babs" that is hysterical.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Precursor to ... The Bat
I write blog reviews for The Kindle Blog Report, and am branching out into reviewing books available for Kindle.

Mary Roberts Rinehart is most famous for her book The Bat, but few know its history.

First off, she wrote a book - this book - The Circular Staircase (1908), in which two eldelry women move into a house, from whence *someone* then starts trying to drive them out. This was Rinehart's first book.

1-0 out of 5 stars just the facts, ma'am
I downloaded this book because it was free. There was NO information on it, not even a cover picture. So, I thought I'd try it.
I got about 10 pages in before I lost interest. It appears to be a detective story written in the style of the Maltese Falcon. The dialogue is choppy, the mood dark.I'm much more of a light and fluffy book person.
just so you know to make a better download decision. ... Read more
