Product Description
"Africa is a magnificent and diverse continent full of majesty and mystery. Unfortunately, recent waves of genocide have also spread misery to millions of Africans. In these pages Lucian Niemeyer has bravely and sensitively documented the horror and cruelty of the genocides of Rwanda and Sudan."--from the Africa Foreword by Bill Richardson

In 1994, internationally known author and photographer Lucian Niemeyer began a series of journeys to Africa to document and expose atrocities being committed there. Niemeyer traveled to the Rwandan refugee camps in Zaire a few months after the terrible Hutu-on-Tutsi genocide. Subsequent trips to the Sudan were made to document slavery, the oil field genocide, and the Nuba Mountain epoch.

Four main types of holocausts are presented in these stories: tribe-on-tribe genocide ("Rwandan Refugees"), slavery ("The Sudan Slave Story"), religious Jihad genocide ("Sudan Oil Field Genocide"), and ethnic cleansing ("Nuba Mountains, Sudan"). Over 180 color photographs document these atrocities. ... Read more

Nighty-night
Sleep tight
Don't let The bedbugs bite.

This familiar refrain sets the scene for the nightly imaginings of aninventive child. The very mention of bedbugs fires the child'simagination, and soon she is busy dispatching the bugs. Father'srepeated "Nighty-nights" to settle the child only conjures up anothercreature in the restless child's mind.

As the ghoul, the monster, and finally the vampire each submit to thehigh-spirited child, Father quietly brings it to an end by reciting,"No buts. Sleepy, sleepy. Eyes shut."

This is a beguiling story filled with humor and rising anticipationfollowing each "Nighty-night."

Marc Mongeau's fun-filled artwork embodies the comical spirit thatmakes the story such a pleasurable read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent translation for our next president
I'd already read this extraordinary book in the original English edition and decided to check the Spanish one (sometimes they do terrible Spanish translations). Fortunately, this translated version captures perfectly the spirit and scope of Mr. Richardson's vision of America, and his wonderful history of achievements, all put in such excellent Spanish it feels as if one was reading the original work. I hope this inspiring story will help many Hispanic citizens know better a man highly qualified to guide the USA during the 2008-2011 presidential term. ... Read more

Product Description
Darfur, located in westernmost Sudan, is that nation's largest region, situated on the border with Chad. For centuries, northern Sudan has been predominantly Arab Muslim and the south, black African. Ruled as a colonial state by, primarily, Egypt and Britain, Sudan was granted independence in 1956 with Khartoum, in the northern Arab Muslim territory, as its seat of power.

In 1983, the Sudanese government announced that all of Sudan would officially be a Muslim country. The "sharia," the Muslim code of laws, became the rule: those not Muslim are deemed unclean and infidels. Southern Sudan began resisting the genocide waged by the Muslim north. This resistance led to the 1992 announcement of a holy jihad by the Sudanese government, leading to today's humanitarian crisis in Darfur.

"Lucian Niemeyer understands that to truly tell the story of the turmoil in Darfur and Sudan one must understand the history and root causes that brought the Sudan and its people to this situation. His breathtaking photographs and compelling narrative tell the definitive story of the conflict and will help the readers across the globe to understand the true nature of the genocide and the people caught up in it every day. . . . I applaud him for this wonderful book and join him in his urgent cry for help for those oppressed in Sudan who cannot speak for themselves."--Governor Bill Richardson, from the Foreword ... Global climate change?

We can stop it.

Addiction to oil?We can replace it.

Technological innovation?

We can create it.

But we can't wait twenty, thirty, or fifty years.

Bill Richardson launched his campaign for the presidency to remind the American people--and their representatives in Washington--that we know how to get things done. We need to end our dependence on oil, and we need to do it yesterday.

This isn't something that's going to happen only in Washington, or Detroit, or even Hollywood or Tokyo. It's going to take all of us, a united United States. We have the opportunity, perhaps for only a few years, to make dramatic but beneficial changes in the way we run America.

As Leading by Example makes clear, if we succeed, with strong presidential leadership and the support of the American people, we will restore America's role in the world--a source of moral leadership, a source of astonishing technology, and a source of optimism to be admired. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A plan full of hope
I work for the publisher and read this book last year when it came out. Richardson puts forth a strong, yet plausible plan for reducing America's dependency on oil, instead developing new energy sources which we can then export to the rest of the world as well.

Richardson has a great deal of foreign policy experience, and would have been a fine choice for Secretary of State. But I am glad to have him at Commerce, too. His vision, as articulated in this book, will transform the American energy industry and the American economy in the next ten years, and inspire the rest of the world to follow. He compares it to the space race. I'd like to have that kind of strength and pride in America again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A politician who knows what he's talking about.
This is a well-written and accessible book for anyone who is interested in how energy policy can help to ensure both economic independence and security.Governor Richardson is well-versed in the subject from his experience in Congress, the Clinton administration, the UN, and as governor of New Mexico.I remember when the second Iraq War broke out during my time as a freshman at Boston University, the only way energy policy was discussed was in its role as fostering violence and greed, not as a tool for ensuring security.Governor Richardson takes a realistic approach that at the same time is driven by idealism.

1-0 out of 5 stars A book critical to anyone concerned about energy policy, security and how we design our future.
This book is critical to anyone concerned about energy policy, security and how we design our future.Richardson is one of our leading international statesmen who will likely continue playing a critical role in our government both here and abroad.He has taken bold action as a Governor and has a bold vision that no other politician could accomplish without his experience.I have worked for this man doing environmental regulations - he is the real deal.I loved the book and passed it out readily.

5-0 out of 5 stars SMILE ON HIS FACE!
I bought the book for my father. He is from a small town and came into Wichita to visit me. We always go to the Barnes and Noble when he comes down. He found the book, but I talked him out of buying it because I knew on Amazon I could buy it for way less. Barnes and Nobles was 39.00 and Amazon, new, was 17.00. Thats a no brainer. When the book came in, I sent it to him. He was happy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Horizon Beyond An Inconvenient Truth
Can you believe this?Bill Richardson has written a truly exciting book.This is the book we've been waiting for - the one that takes us from the stage of awareness that Al Gore produced two years ago to the society that takes control of destiny and begins to live in global wealth, health and security.

Richardson begins by describing the existing current lag in leadership.America needs to reposition its image in the spirit that it has long held.Sacrifice and inspiration are essential to that image.With the image and presence of a compassionate America, nations will succeed in lifting themselves from tyranny, depression, illness and tragedy.We cannot afford to confuse our image as a people - that image that produces inspiration through compassion - with one that will overrun other nations to satisfy an addiction for oil.

Richardson will use the power of the markets to drive America to destiny.In the words of Richardson:"The power of markets is immense.That is one of the great lessons - besides democracy and human rights - that the United States has taught the world over the past two centuries.The market has the power not only to create individual prosperity and growth, as conceived by the great first-ever modern economist, Adam Smith, but also to achieve big things for society as a whole.If we manage the carbon markets sensibly, with strict limits, smart incentives, and practical oversight - as we manage the monetary supply via the Federal Reserve - we can see a market-based economy that actually works toward REDUCING pollution."

Along with markets, the government must play a role - one that will provide sophisticated, integrated, and compassionate policies.The goal of government is to keep the dynamic of a proper functioning market going.Government assists with competition and choice while representing all of the true interests of the citizens.Richardson describes strategies of jawboning, holding to principles, standing to commitments, and using the bully pulpit.Federal government will do well to learn from states and cities.A set of federal Climate Challenge block grants that reward innovation would be part of Richardson's program.Other goals adopted in New Mexico include energy efficiency, green building, renewable energy, green transportation, renewable fuels, incentives, and overarching climate change action.

Richardson has been described as the Democratic Libertarian.Much of what Richardson describes is a reformation and restoration of capitalist principles for a new century.Says Richardson, "All goods cost something to make, and it matters what gets calculated in the cost, whether it's raw materials, human rights, defending oil transportation routes, or damage to the environment that needs to be cleaned up.Until all those things are factored in, you don't really have the true cost."That makes sense to me.True Libertarian values are grounded in wise capitalist principles.However, until we've become free from cynicism, that is, until we've become perceptive enough to account for all values in the face of other prices, we cannot make honest dealings that are consistent with the true spirit of our capitalist enterprises.It's no wonder that Lee Iacocca likes this guy.Iacocca knows leadership, and Richardson brings it.

Product Description
In Paris's Pere-Lachaise cemetery lie the bones of many renowned departed. It is also home to a large number of stray cats. Now, what if by some strange twist of fate, the souls of the famous were reborn in the cats with their personalities intact? There's Maria Callas, a wilful and imperious diva, wailing late into the night. Earthy, bawdy chanteuse Edith Piaf is a foul-mouthed washerwoman. Oscar Wilde is hopelessly in love with Jim Morrison who sadly does not return his affections. Frederic Chopin is as melancholic and deeply contemplative as ever, and in honor of the tradition of leaving love letters at his tomb, he is now the cemetery's postmaster general. Last but not least, Marcel Proust is trying to solve the mystery behind some unusual thefts - someone has stolen Rossini's glass eye and Sarah Bernhardt's leg. Told in a series of amusing set pieces and intercepted letters, this is a delicious tale of intrigue, unrequited love, longstanding quarrels, character assassinations, petty spats, and sorcery that builds to a steady climax at the cats' annual Christmas pageant.

5-0 out of 5 stars I suspect I know some of these cats
If you love cats, and you love France, and you have an extremely peculiar sense of humor and an appreciation for the absurd, I think you'll love this book.You may even adore it.

Waiting for Gertrude is set in Paris' gargantuan Pere Lachaise cemetery, where the souls of some of the notables buried therein have returned to Earth (translated, to use their term) as cats.A befurred Alice B. Toklas (the book's narrator) is waiting, and waiting, and waiting for her dear Gertrude Stein to reincarnate (translate) while Oscar Wilde pines and whines and preens hoping to attract the affection of his beloved Jim Morrison ("Jamz"), a ferocious, kitten-devouring three-testicled tomcat. All the while, quadriped versions of Isadora Duncan and Edith Piaf are making all kinds of merry hell for the other feline residents of the cemetery who include:

Jean de la Fontaine, the French fabulist returned now as a second-rate tour guide who insists on delivering his lectures in iambic pentameter, and whose poems introduce the various characters and situations;

Modigliani - then as now, a great painter;

Rossini - an aged and quite senile cat who cannot remember he was once a composer;

Collette - a high-class Persian cat of aristocratic ownership who followed a randy tomcat from her wealthy home to the cemetery, and now a noted teacher of yoga;

Chopin - the once-composer and now Per Lachaise's Postmaster General, where the cats have learned how to write and do write often;

Sarah Bernhardt - still an actress despite losing a leg;

Marcel Proust - a Private Investigator investigating a series of mysterious thefts taking place over the course of the novel and whose head is often - quite literally - stuck up his nethermost orifice in search of inspiration;

Heloise and Abelard - back on Earth as kitties who are, respectively, a highend caterer and "lifestyle consultant" and a publicist; and,

Ondine - the only human character, known as the "Spay Queen;" the cats' arch-nemesis and an enthusiastic proponent of feline population control

Readers who appreciate a novel that is extremely weird but profoundly humorous and satirical will enjoy Waiting for Gertrude. Part romance, part fantasy, and part satire, the reader who enjoys Monty Pythonand Douglas Adams will be perfect for this insane look at the afterlife.

You simply have to love a book containing a sentence that reads, "There never was such a ratter as Sarah Bernhardt!" What a fun read!

4-0 out of 5 stars Life after Death
WAITING FOR GERTRUDE by Bill Richardson is a fantasy delight. I've never been to Paris but his tour of the famous cemetery is fantastic, especially for a cat lover.
The famous personages buried there are reincarnated as the cats who inhabit the grounds. Your mind bounces as he combines wit and erudite to create an amazing read.
I gave it to my sister for Christmas, then I borrowed it back to read.
Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS.

5-0 out of 5 stars cat lovers stop here.....
This is one of my absolutely favorite books. The story is funny, sweet and whimsical. If you aren't partial to cats, this may hold no interest
for you, because the entire charm of the story is the idea of all these famous (and infamous) people being reincarnated as felines. To keep faithful Alice B. Toklas company is Proust, Chopin, Collette, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, Modigliani and several other former human luminaries.
I pull this book out whenever I feel down or stressed-out and it never fails to cheer me up. It's an easy afternoon read. Don't pass up this little treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars UNIQUE!
I'm going to say this was the best book I've read in years. It was quirkey, unique and just plain fascinating. What an imagination this writer has! I love cats. I love literature! This book took those two subjects and blended them together to create the most enjoyable book I've read in a long time. I highly reccommend this to anyone who loves literature, who will appreciate recognizing literary greats plus meeting the most unsual characters ever together in a cemetary all inhabiting the bodies of stray cats!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wordsmiths delight
This book is absolutely delicious!It is full of puns and hidden references. The exercise in devouring this little gem is worth every second. I didn't want it to end. It is a writers read as well as a readers read I recommend it to everyone who enjoys words. Don't waste another minute buy it! Doesn't hurt if you have spent time in Paris either. ... Read more

Product Description
Po’pay: Leader of the First American Revolution chronicles the history of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and its leader, Po’pay, with commentaries on the historical and cultural importance of these events. This is the first time Pueblo historians have written about these events in book form; previous volumes reflected Spanish sources or more distant academic viewpoints. Drawing on their oral history and using their own words, the Pueblo writers discuss the history and importance of Po’pay, the illustrious San Juan Pueblo Indian strategist and warrior who was renowned, respected and revered by their people as a visionary leader. Edited by Joe S. Sando (Jemez Pueblo) & Herman Agoyo (San Juan Pueblo), this book includes contributions by Theodore S. Jojola (Isleta Pueblo), Robert Mirabal (Taos Pueblo), Alfonso Ortiz (San Juan Pueblo), Simon J. Ortiz (Acoma Pueblo), and Joseph H. Suina (Cochiti Pueblo)

Po’pay: Leader of the First American Revolution also provides a comprehensive look at a particular time in New Mexico’s history that changed the state forever, making it the richly multi-cultural "Land of Enchantment" that it is. Amplified with quotes from New Mexico and Pueblo leaders, the book also demonstrates how the events of the Pueblo Revolt enabled the Pueblos, unlike other American Indian groups, to continue their languages, traditions and religion on essentially the same lands from ancient times to today and how Po’pay’s legacy continues to inspire all people. The book also covers the historical making of the seven-foot-tall Tennessee marble statue, from the political processes involved to its actual creation, eventual completion and final dedication in the Statuary Hall on September 22, 2005.

Drawing on early Spanish records as well as the oral tradition preserved in the pueblos since the seventeenth century, Joe S. Sando tells the compelling story of the conditions of Spanish rule, the secret planning of Pueblo leaders and the remarkably coordinated Revolt that drove the Spanish from New Mexico in 1680. Under Po’pay’s leadership, the Revolt ended the persecutions and secured the future of the Pueblo People—their culture, their land rights and their religious freedom.

Herman Agoyo brought history to life in the present as he guided the events leading to the completion of the Po’pay statue. It was his vision and persistence that drove the project forward, through creating and passing in the New Mexico State Legislature the bill selecting Po’pay, the fund-raising, and the final completion and dedication of the statue. This book is a celebration of New Mexico’s culturally rich present as well as its history. ... Read more

Near the beginning of Amazing Faith: The Authorized Biography of Bill Bright, author Michael Richardson writes about Bright's founding of Campus Crusade for Christ, one of the largest Christian organizations in the world. Richardson quotes Bright as saying, "I'm often asked if I'm surprised at the remarkable growth and size of Campus Crusade for Christ. My answer: No, I am not surprised, for the vision God gave that midnight hour in the spring of 1951 was of such great magnitude--far greater than anything we have yet experienced. The best is yet before us." Bright's single-minded commitment to evangelism fills every detail of his days--he even signs his letters "Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission in this generation." And Amazing Faith is an intimate, easy-to-read account of Bright's extremely popular ministry. Most chapters are less than five pages long, and they are written in a style that is straightforward and down to earth. The biographer had excellent access to information about the friendships between Bright and Christian leaders such as Billy Graham, his home life and his relationship with his wife Vonette, and all the highlights of his career (including winning the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion in 1996). His biographer, in return, has given Bright--and readers--a comprehensive, entertaining, and inspiring book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Faith
"Amazing Faith" is the biography of a man who was well-known both inside and outside the Christian community.

Among the areas covered include:

1.Early life in Oklahoma and eventual move to Los Angeles where Bright described himself as a "happy pagan".
2.Personal encounter in coming to saving faith in Jesus Christ.
3.Involvement with Campus Crusade For Christ - starting the organization, recruiting staff members, locations in California and Florida, etc.
4.Relationship with his beloved wife Vonette and adopted sons Zachary and Brad.
5.Many travels to other countries.
6.Relationship with various Christian leaders.
7.Relationship with various political leaders.

The narrative is readable and appears to flow smoothly and may be read in 2-3 sittings.

A good account of a man who was well-known for his simple faith in God and His ability to guide and provide.

Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth your time to read
I found the book to be very interesting and filled with inspirational material. It is remarkable how much Bill and his wife, Vonette, accomplished. After I read it, I gave it to my adult son (for whom reading is not the pleasure it is for me) and he read the entire book and told me how much it meant to him.

I am writing this only because one reader gave it such a low rating.The book does have a lot of detail in the last half.However, to have left out the detail would have left the book incomplete in my view.

3-0 out of 5 stars A story worth telling is worth telling well
Bill Bright was a man of God, taking God at His word and pouring himself into ministry. His story is truly one of amazing faith, and his record of visionary leadership in the Evangelical Christian world is unparalleled: founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, first to use satellite video as an evangelistic tool, mover behind the Jesus Film. This is a man whom I wanted to get to know better, and I was able to do that through this book. Bill Bright allowed God to do incredible things through him--and I wanted to find out how and why.

Unfortunately, what should be an inspirational story gets lost in a myriad of irrelevant details and poor writing style of the author. Obviously enthralled by Dr. Bright, the author at times unnecessarily defends him, rather than just letting the story stand on its own. The style is almost autobiographical, except it was written by someone else in the third person, who then utilized extensive quotes from the participants--it just bogged it down. Frankly, this is the most poorly written book I've ever finished reading, which speaks of how much I wanted to get to know Bill Bright.

The gem was near the end, when the author documents a day spent with Dr. Bright. It played to the author's journalistic training, and I was able to catch that glimpse I was looking for. That was worth slogging through the rest to get to.

The bottom line: if you want to learn about the life of Bill Bright, this is your only option, and that's too bad. Someone should really take another stab at his biography. He deserves better, and we could all use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars He dared to believe God for great things
Here is a man God has greatly used to spread the good news of forgiveness and new life in Christ.Richardson does a great job of presenting his life in a most interesting and readable way.

Even though most of us are neither called nor gifted to do what Bill Bright did, reading about his life with an open heart can challenge us to rise above a life of mediocrity to be used by God within our own sphere of influence.

For any still wondering about Christianity, reading about what made this man tick, and the "4 Spiritual Laws," can help you understand Bill's "transferable concepts" idea; he had a gift for putting everything into simple steps that can be passed easily from one person to another.

I believe it was Appendix "F" that prints out the "4 Spiritual Laws;" it is actually good to read that first; it's at the heart of everything Bill did in his Chistian life.
