Product Description

With more twists than an L.A. freeway, Philip Reed guides you on a lethal joyride you won't forget....

Harold Dodge, pushing fifty, is a good man. But in a less-than-perfect world -- that is, Los Angeles -- good men sometimes have to do bad things. Just about everyone in the City of Angels has a hard luck story, but when it comes to bad breaks, Harold is rewriting the book.

Now he's in a friend's car -- and in a spot. A pair of hired repo men in a stolen Buick are trying to run him off the freeway and into an early grave. But the cops pull him over first -- a blessing, except for one little thing. Harold's got a dead body in the trunk. That's when his luck takes a turn...for the worse.

It all started because Harold has a weakness for killer legs. And when Marianna Perado in her spike heels asks him to help her "unwind" a rip-off deal at Joe Covo's dealership, where Harold once bird-dogged suckers into buying used cars, he jumps...and lands in a cesspool of corruption.

Harold lives for women and cars -- he just never figured on dying for them. Now he has to add up a pack of lies and hope a scrap of truth comes out in the equation. But Harold lives in a city where everyone's working a hustle, where the only question is who's hustling you. The Santa Ana winds are blowing, and Harold Dodge is feeling the heat.Amazon.com Review
Harold Dodge, overweight and pushing 50 hard, loves woman andcars. So when the extremely striking Marianna Perado interrupts hisacquisition of a real cream puff--an '86 Maxima that he knows he canslap a $100 detail job on, then resell for an extra $1000--and asksfor his help in getting her trade-in back from the hotshot dealer heused to work for, Harold just can't say no. Within minutes, he's up tohis ears in dangerous deals and scams that escalate into a carnival ofterror. If Florida's Carl Hiassen moved to the seamier side of LosAngeles, this first novel might well be the kind of thing he'd come upwith. But former journalist and television writer Philip Reed hasalready claimed the territory, and is at work on his second mysteryabout Harold Dodge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elmord Leonard...Move over!
If you're an Elmore Leonard fan, you're in for a treat.Reed takes us on a no-holds barred tour of the seamy side of the auto business. complete with fraud, hoaxes, and mayhem.
Bird Dog is Get Shorty on 4-wheels. Once it starts, it just doesn't stop.
Reed is sure-handed writer with obviously great knowledge about the world of auto dealerships. Not only will you be fascinated, you'll learn a few tricks of the trade for next time you have to buy a car!
Only question I have is why isn't Bird Dog already a movie? But I won't worry--one day it will be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Meet Harold Dodge, a.k.a. Bird Dog
"Bird Dog" opens with a glimpse of killer-Mex, Mariana, a raven-haired beauty with red lips and flashing teeth, in stiletto heels. She's out to buy a car, a simple task that leads to mayhem when she is taken advantage of by an unscrupulous car dealer.Enter Harold Dodge, a work mate of Mariana's at an aerospace company. It turns out that Harold has written a book on how to buy a used car, which is based on his previous life as a car salesman, a.k.a. "bird dog," for the car lot where Mariana purchased her car.The fun begins when Harold accompanies Mariana back to the car dealership, then back into the maze of the LA underbelly of chop shops, corruption and greed.

Harold, a quirky but loveable, bear of a man, with fifty in his rear view mirror, can't say no to a beautiful woman. Through tough negotiation, fast action, and sometimes just dumb luck, Harold manages to extricate himself and Mariana from some very hairy situations.

Reed brings his offbeat characters to life and makes the reader a part of their hapless ride through danger. He has a knack for showing the best and worst of his characters, making them real and sometimes tragically funny.Believe me, you'll never look at that nondescript man at the office in the same way again, after you've met Harold Dodge.

"Bird Dog," Reed's first book, is a fast read about a fast ride.If you liked "Bird Dog," read on.The chronicle of Harold Dodge continues in "Low Rider."Don't miss the fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars The car lover's crime novel.
The book jacket on this little gem describes it as a "car noir thriller", and this is one of those rare instances when the cover blurb nails it.If you want cars, this story is dripping with Mercedes and Maximas and Fords and GMC's and Integra's, even an Escort (!?).If you're into noir, you'll love the seedy downtown LA settings, the bodies in the trunk, the femme fatale seeking revenge -- and an ending that does the genre justice. Finally, it is a non-stop thrill ride through wrecked lives and double-dealing and the law on your tail no matter which way you turn. The hero (always a relative term in noir) is Harold Dodge, who falls hard for a babe in spike heels who's been hoodwinked on an automobile transaction and wants him to "unwind the deal" for her.Unable to resist those killer legs, he agrees. Before Dodge knows it, he's in trouble up to his neck, winds up in jail, almost gets himself killed and manages to get laid like he's never been before, though not necessarily in that order. If you like Elmore Leonard and Jim Thompson, you'll like Phil Reed, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'll never enter a car dealership again!
I'm not used to the thriller genre. The book was emotionally draining. Itreminded me of a friend's comment about the movie "Blue Velvet":"Some of the characters are such scum you don't want to be on the sameplanet with them." Whew. I don't know how I'll ever be able to buy acar again! At least they by and large eliminated each other, eventually, but not as painlessly as one might wish. When it's over, how does theoccasionally introspective, moralizing hero, Harold figure he stands withGod? He's quite a mensch, hard not to like. No wonder his magnetism affectsenough women to complicate things for him. Great job setting up for asequel, too. It 's just that "Bird Dog" leaves so much scorchedearth that I can't imagine how Harold can possibly set foot anywhere nearLA ever again. Which is perfect, of course, because I have to read the nextbook to find out. Something tells me that glowering cop Gammon was justwarming up in "Bird Dog." Harold had better stay under his radar. Note on irritating speech mannerisms mentioned in previous review:Harold's the only character in the book who peppers his conversation with"i.e." I've known people with at least equally irritating tics, and my impression was that that's all it is: i.e., characterization.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fast-paced and entertaining read
Philip Reed's Bird Dog introduces us to former car salesman turnedengineer Harold Dodge. Aptly described as a "car noir" thriller,Bird Dog offers readers a thrilling ride with Harry - one of the mostinteresting characters I've come across in quite some time - at oursides.

Harry Dodge seems to have two joys and weaknesses in his life -cars and women. So it's no surprise that he lands in hot water after sexyMarianna Perado walks into his life, the victim of a car deal gone sour.Marianna's experience at Joe Covo's car dealership has left her feelingripped off and cheated. Dodge knows all about car dealers cheating theircustomers, and he knows about Joe Covo's activities from personalexperience. By agreeing to help Marianna unwind the car deal, Harry findshimself in the middle of an elaborate plot of revenge, crosses anddouble-crosses that play out in the streets of Los Angeles.

There is alittle bit of everything in Bird Dog - hot cars, hot women, vengeance, seedy characters, and a plot with as many twist and turns as you mightexpect in L.A. It's a great thriller, and a different kind of thriller thanI've come across. Give this Edgar Award nominated novel a try and getacquainted with Harry Dodge. ... Read more

Product Description
This volume brings together all the travel diaries of Sir Peter Pears (1910-1986), principal interpreter of Britten's works. Pears accompanied Britten on many of his trips and the record of their tour of the Far East in 1955 is of special interest. Here the sound of the gamelan orchestras enchanted Britten and deeply influenced his musical development. A valuable source of material on the musical development of both Pears and Benjamin Britten...a `must' for those interested in either. OPERA JOURNAL (US)Amazon.com Review
At the height of their careers, tenor Peter Pears and composer Benjamin Britten traveled the globe, both to give performances and for pleasure. Pears, not a diarist in his daily life, had the habit of keeping journals while he was away--though even those were irregular. His diaries, most from the mid-1950s to the late '70s, are sometimes sketchy, even cryptic, but have been supplemented by Philip Reed's excellent editing and by letters and other material. The sections that were previously published (often in the Aldeburgh Festival's annual program book) have the virtue of a full narrative flow, and Pears reveals himself as an alert if unremarkable observer of food, art, flora, fauna, and people.

The couple's Asian tour in 1955-56 was deeply significant for Britten's subsequent output, especially his Church Parables. Pears describes their attendance at a performance (by a Japanese school group) of the Noh play Sumidagawa--the basis, eight years later, of Britten's first parable, Curlew River. The experience was thrilling to them both. Pears's comments are less worthwhile for their insight into the composer's thinking than for the sensation they give of being in the room at a moment of inspiration. The diaries are filled with celebrated friends and the aura that attended two famous musicians (traveling from Moscow to Armenia, a planeload of people bursts into applause when it is announced that Britten and Pears are among the passengers). The final segments were written when Pears made his Metropolitan Opera debut (at 64) in Death in Venice, and when he returned four years later, after Britten's death, to appear in Billy Budd.

This volume, essentially a footnote to studies on Britten and Pears, is one of the Aldeburgh Studies in Music series, which comprises a usefully broad range of titles examining Britten's techniques and influences. --David Olivenbaum ... Read more

Product Description

"Defined by a brilliant economy of style, a no-nonsense world view, and a lack of cliché....This bleak, funny...tale of used-car corruption, murder, and sex in a seamy, unremitting L.A. combines unlikely, grittily real characters with tough, clean prose," raved The Boston Book Review of the author's debut thriller, Bird Dog. Now, Reed brings back hardluck L.A. hero Harold Dodge in the eagerly awaited sequel to his "savage but jovial black comedy...[and] formidable set of wheels" (Literary Review).

Life continues to throw Harold Dodge some wicked curves. But sometimes, the more wicked the curve the better. Take Vikki Covo, widow of Harold's former boss at the Joe Covo car dealership. She's a blonde, she's beautiful, and she's angling for a million-dollar settlement on her husband's life insurance policy. Vikki's a curve in the shape of a dollar sign, a woman Harold could learn to love almost as much as he loves his '64 Chevy Impala. If only she handled as well....

The deal: if Harold negotiates the insurance settlement, he'll get ten percent, plus Vikki's everlasting gratitude and affection. The problem: the police are treating Joe Covo's death as a suicide, meaning no payout on the insurance. And when Harold suggests the cops rule it a homicide instead, they're all too willing to oblige, figuring him as their number-one suspect. Staring a murder rap in the face, Harold must descend into a rogue's gallery of low-riding gangbangers, car thieves, chop-shop operators, and collection agents.

Mixing business with pleasure is always a risky affair, and in this case Harold's in so deep he's getting the bends. From cowboy cops to jealous lovers, just about everybody wants a piece of him. Worst of all, the bad guys have sunk to a new low: they've stolen his Impala and stripped it for parts. Harold's going to find his Chevy and put it back together...even if it means going to hell and back in Vikki's four-cylinder rice-burner.

From the moment the key is turned in its ignition, Low Rider takes off on a supercharged, high-speed adventure you'll wish would never end. "Reed does for low-life L.A. what Hiaasen does for Florida -- turns it into a seriocomic carnival of suspense" (Publishers Weekly).Amazon.com Review
Philip Reed doesn't waste any time getting down to business in his secondbook about a slightly bent but basically good-hearted Los Angeles cardealer named Harold Dodge. On page one, right after a bunch of gangbangers onthe 405 freeway give thumbs-up approval to his lime green '64 Chevy ImpalaSS with 300-horsepower engine, Harold begins to muse: "He had lived herehis whole life until he was forced to leave the country last year becauseof a couple of murders he didn't commit. Now, he was back to straightenthings out. Repair the damage he had done to Vikki's life, and his own,and--who knows?--make some nice money in the process." As readers of Reed'sEdgar-nominated debut novel, Bird Dog, know, Vikki isthe widow of Dodge's former employer, a man killed because of a crooked cardeal by the woman who became Harold's lover. Reed's second outing is ascomplicated, colorful, and full of great cars as his first--and judging bythe tire tracks left at the end, there's a good chance that Mark III willsoon be in your showrooms. --Dick Adler ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Underated
I don't know why Phil Reed has not garnerd more accalim or commrcial success. I would like to see a half-dozen more books in this series. His non-hero anti-hero rumple-suited car expert and unlikely knight in rusted armor makes for a page-turner.
I still want to know what happened after this book. I even wrote the author. He needs to write another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A winner.
Author Phil Reed has come up with a loveable protagonist in Harold Dodge. He's rough around the edges, knows it, struggles with it, never gives in or gives up. He's much like Odysseus (sorry for the metaphor!) in that the winds of the world buffet the heck out of him, but with wiles and a gimlet eye, he keeps battling. It's nice to have a noir-type character who is willing to take burdens on his shoulders, and still dream of finding a perfect life for himself, his Dad and his girl.I look forward to the further adventures of the scraggy-edged charmer, Harold Dodge.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wild Ride Through the Streets of LA
Low Rider, the second in a series with ex-car salesman Harold Dodge, is another fast paced ride through the streets of LA.This time Harold is teamed with Vicki Corvo, a block-buster blonde with a penchant for automobiles.

Down on her luck since her husband disappeared in Bird Dog, complements of Harold and his lover, Marianna, Vicki entices Harold into revealing to the police where the body of her husband can be found so she can collect on his life insurance.

Vicki `s lust for bad boys makes for some steamy scenes and close near misses with danger.Harold, lead as always by his mail organ rather than his better judgment, tries to set things right for Vicki, all the while trying to avoid the LAPD and an assortment of Los Angeles-style bottom-feeders.

Reed's characters are quirky, but real. From Fabian, a burly enforcer for his brother's chop shop and a wanna-be opera singer, to Dash, a sleek blonde insurance salesman who's also a cold-blooded killer, they live in the reader's mind and make for a great read.

If you liked Bird Dog, Reed's first novel, you'll love Low Rider!

Product Description
This long-awaited third volume of composer Benjamin Britten's remarkable letters covers the years 1946-51. Fresh from the astonishing success of his great first opera, Peter Grimes, Britten was vital to the post-war rebuilding of the arts in Great Britain with his visionary work as a composer, conductor, and performer. With his partner, the celebrated tenor Peter Pears, he founded the Aldeburgh Festival, which eventually grew into the international festival that it is today, and the English Opera Group. He also toured widely in Europe and the United States as a pianist and conductor. During this time he wrote many of his best-known works, including the operas Billy Budd, Albert Herring, and The Rape of Lucretia. Britten's correspondents include literary figures such as Christopher Isherwood, Edith Sitwell, E. M. Forster (the librettist for Billy Budd), and Edward Sackville-West, as well as musical colleagues from around the world including Ernest Ansermet, Francis Poulenc, Aaron Copland, and Igor Stravinsky. This volume of selected letters represents one of the richest and most innovative periods of the composer's creative life. His daily concerns and the unique era in which he lived are vividly evoked by the comprehensive and scholarly annotations, which offer a wide range of detailed and fascinating information. Donald Mitchell, et.al. have done another remarkable job in providing source material for the serious student of Benjamin Britten's life and music. At the same time, the book reads like a biography. It is filled with invaluble information that helps frame, illuminate and clarify issues surrounding Britten's important work of the time. I especially appreciated Dr. Mitchell's thoughful response to those who would have us look at Britten's incredible artistic contributions solely through the mind and eyes of sexual preference. Product Description
In a career that spanned the first half of this century, Philip Trammell Shutze produced over 750 architectural works. Because his production was so large, this first book to examine his buildings concentrates on the more important ones, which as a body represent an architectural achievement of a very high order of refinement, grace, and beauty.

Although Shutze practiced from 1912 to 1968, covering the period of the ascendancy of modernism through its final triumph, he remained a firmly committed classicist, practicing out of an office in Atlanta where he produced an extraordinary body of monumental commercial and institutional buildings and country villas.

After graduating from Georgia Tech, Shutze stayed a year at Columbia University before he won the prestigious Rome Prize in 1915. Travelling to Rome later that year, he became a member of one of the earliest classes of fellows to occupy the recently completed American Academy on the Janiculum overlooking the city. The magnificent palazzo designed by America's most renowned architectural firm, McKim, Mead, and White, did not however please the fellows, who found it "too new," and therefore not authentic (Shutze would later devote much attention to techniques for instantly aging building facades).

With the coming of the First World War, Shutze and most of his classmates stayed in Rome as Red Cross volunteers, but when the war was over they returned to he Academy and to their studies. During his five years in Rome, Shutze immersed himself in learning everything he could about the great buildings of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. He painstakingly measured those buildings as well as the monuments of the Roman Empire, committing the smallest of details to paper and to memory.

Returning to the U.S. in 1920, Shutze worked in New York for Mott Schmidt, who designed townhouses for such families as the Astors, Morgans, and Vanderbilts, and he also worked for F. Burrall Hoffman, whose masterpiece is Villa Vizcaya in Miami. Within a few years, though, he returned to Georgia where he remained as the epitome of the "gentleman architect," designing some of the most beautiful buildings ever to grace the American landscape.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Atlanta
This is a wonderful book on one of Atlanta's finest residential architects.Mr. Shutze had a command of many styles, but he most famous for his Neo-Palladian Swan House, he built for the Inman's in Buckhead, this home is simply a masterpiece and we are so fortunite that it is today open to the public. This book has wonderful images of the Inman home and many other opulant mansions that Philip Shutze designed in and around Atlanta. The text is quite scholarly and informative, and as I had already stated the book includes many vivid images.Atlanta was fortunite to have had an architect of this calibur designing its great homes during the Golden Age of American craftmanship.Like Houston's great residential architect John Staub, Shutze was a master of many styles, but always knew one didn't need to guild the lilly, so to speak, he also, like Staub, always designed a home to integrate fluidly with it's natural surroundings, this I believe was his greatest talent.Wonderful book on a great talent..highly recommended. ... Product Description
Philip Reed, best known for his superb models of ships from the age of sail, here turns his attention to the other highly popular subject for ship modelers-the warships of the Second World War.

The book is a step-by-step manual for building a scratch waterline model of the Ca Class destroyer HMS Caesar, the sistership of Cavalier now on display in drydock at Chatham Historical Dockyard. These emergency built ships were launched between 1943 and 1945 and Caesar herself was to see action in 1944 on the Russian convoys and then in defense of the Western Approaches.

The model presented in the book is built to the scale of 16ft to the inch and is designed to be displayed as a waterline model in a diorama. Every aspect is covered from the construction of a bread and butter hull through to the the details of camouflage, bridge, funnel, mast, the 4.5in, Hazemeyer and Oerlikon guns, boats, davits, depth charge gear, torpedo tubes, searchlights, vents and lockers, and the sea itself.

Ship's plans and a picture gallery at the end of the book devoted to a whole array of the author's WWII model warships complete the book.More than fifty years of modeling experience is passed on through wise and practical advice and thus each page will be of the utmost value to scratch builders and to any kit builders who may be setting out to construct a model of a WWII warship. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book and a Great Martial Art
However please do not be fooled.Someone posted in here that Bruce "Stole" his art from Savate. This simply is not true.Nor is it true that Savate makes up any part of Shaolin Arts.Bruce liked what he saw in Savate and incorporated this in Jeet Kune Do, but by no means is Savate synonomous with Jeet Kune Do, but rather just one piece of the many pieces that Bruce used in his own personal expression of the Martial Arts.

I have been trying to retrace the footsteps of Bruce Lee from a very young age, and Savate is definitely one of the mechanisms for that.Bruce was well grounded in Wing Chun, but added the kicks from Savate. If you are looking for an excellent way to add to your existing knowledge of the Martial Arts then this book is definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
There is probably no better book around on the basics of Savate than this.Breaks down techniques very well.Often a book is illustrated very well but the text describing the techniques is poor;not the case here. Also, the connection between Savate and the kickboxing arts of the former French colonies in Indochina are quite evident.I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Savate the best form of self defence
This is a well written book. It shows that hands blows in Savate are just as powerful as the kicks. Bruce Lee stole most of his art from Savate and Boxing. If one looks at Wing Chun you can see that the Chinese admired Savate and stole it for them selves, good idea. Savate offers the most useful form of self defence for the streets. This book is a must for serious people. Boxing fist blows and kicks are a rough system to beat!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gem!
This is one of the few modern Savate books in English. It is well written and easy to read, containing details on techniques, training methods and background information. The two authors are still practising Savate to thisday, and between them have many years experience thus allowing them to havea unique insight into this growing Sport.

Well worth a read, a goodreference tool for anyone interested in this French kickboxing art. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy!!!
I had never bought a car on my own. They were always bought for me by my parents. The time came for me to do it on my own.I read the essential parts of this book. I learned how to negotiate, and how to compare cars, how to focus on the total car price and not the car monthly payment, and saved over $3000 on the price of my car. I bought a 2008 Toyota Corolla that was used (4 months old)with 400 miles for $15000 when it was for sale for $18000 because the book taught me how to negotiate. Prior to purchasing the car I went on Carfax and knew I was getting a great buy. THIS BOOK IS A MUST FOR THOSE WHO NEED HELP BUYING THEIR CAR!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must buy book for new car buyers
I never bought a car in my entire life, and I often heard that car buying is really hard. So I'd thought that educating myself before buying a car, is the first step.
I find this book very detailed and straight forward, because it widens your vision all about cars. It teaches you, first about budgeting and financing, it gives you the pros and cons about buying new car or used car and also about leasing a car. It will also educate you about types of car like (sedan, coup, van.etc)

One tip that is missing though is about bringing an amortization table (book) in going to the dealer.

The last chapter is the best chapter, because it gives you the inside knowledge about the technique of the salesman, and how they will approach you.

I can say that its the best book, because I applied all the things in it and I got a great deal with my car!

Excerpt: William Beck "Bill" Nicholson (December 11, 1914 - March 8, 1996) was a right fielder in Major League Baseball who played for the Philadelphia Athletics (1936), Chicago Cubs (1939-1948) and Philadelphia Phillies (1949-1953). A native of Chestertown, Maryland, where he attended Washington College, he batted left-handed and threw right-handed. In 1944, Nicholson received an intentional walk with the bases loaded. He is listed as one of only six players in major league history to do it. The others are Abner Dalrymple (1881), Nap Lajoie (1901), Del Bissonette (1928), Barry Bonds (1998) and Josh Hamilton (2008). In a 16-year career, Nicholson posted a .268 batting average with 235 home runs and 948 RBI in 1677 games. Nicknamed "Swish" because of his mighty swing, which often missed the ball, Nicholson twice led the National League in home runs and RBI. He played briefly in the American League for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1936, then spent two years in the minors before joining the Chicago Cubs in 1939. Nicholson became a regular with the Cubs in 1940. His most productive season came in 1943, when he hit .309 with a league-leading 29 home runs and 128 RBI. He finished 3rd in the NL MVP Award vote behind Stan Musial and Walker Cooper. In 1944, Nicholson slipped to .287, but he again led the NL in home runs (33), RBI (122) and runs (116). In the same season, after hitting four consecutive homers in a July 23 doubleheader at the Polo Grounds, he came to bat with the bases loaded in the seventh inning of the second game, and was intentionally walked. Product Description
This study covers the latent demand outlook for non-upholstered household furniture made of rattan, reed, wicker, and willow across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it’s prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for non-upholstered household furniture made of rattan, reed, wicker, and willow. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved. ... Read more
