Product Description
John Reed (1887-1920) was part of the original Bohemian generation of the First World War, and is best known for his book, "Ten Days that Shook the World," an eyewitness account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917 that has long been regarded as a classic. Although his prose has been reprinted, his poems have never been collected in book form. An excellent compilation with introduction by Granville Hicks, noted literary critic and author of the definitive biography of Reed, "John Reed: The Making of a Revolutionary," and memoir and sonnet by the late Max Eastman, Reed's close friend and editor of "The Masses," a radical journal which Reed joined in 1913. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a great novel
Initially I was intrigued and eager to read this novel because of my interest in the writer and journalist John Reed, his wife Louise Bryant, and their circle (which has grown since I saw the film "Reds" back in 1981).John Reed led an extraordinarily full life; died young, and made choices not always easily understood. He also left behind a body of work that is compelling to read.

I was disappointed when I discovered that 2/3 of the book is written in the first person.Reading this felt, at times, a little like intruding on someone's fantasy. The author seems to have wanted to convey an autobiographical feel to the story --as if this were the autobiography that Reed never got to write-- but, I don't know, to me a false note was struck almost thoughout.

The final chapter, which is written from Louise Bryant's perspective, is actually quite good. The description of their reunion after Reed's final trip to Baku (where he caught typhus) and his deathbed are excellent, mostly because I believe Mr. Cheuse incorporates a great deal of known facts here and avoided the temptation of trying to assume what Reed's thoughts were on his deathbed.

Trying to recreate a fictionalized account of a real person brings its own set of problems, namely, that a reader might be familiar with the real life (from biographical material) and have a difficult time with the writer's fictional choices... This was the case with me.The character of Mabel Dodge Luhan comes across as a complete flake, which is pretty much contrary to everything I've read about her.Various characters in THE BOHEMIANS refer to Louise Bryant as "Lou", which just doesn't sound "right".Louise introduces herself to John Reed as "Louise Trullinger", when it's easily discovered from biographical material that she kept her maiden name throughout her life.

There are some odd turns of phrase --the author refers to Louise's hair color as "scarlet"; "a rumor of nipples" under her blouse, among other unusual turns of phrase. This is an early novel by this author so these may have been kinks that he needed to work out.Maybe if the novel had gone through one more draft, there would have been less clumsiness and more of a "true" feeling to the story.I don't know.Despite my initial curiosity this was an uncomfortable read for me.

Having now read a novel about John Reed's life, my feeling is: why fictionalize it when the real thing was so fascinating?

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the most novel ideas you'll find anywhere are in this manuel.
John T. Reed is not afraid to speak his mind and through his outspokeness, real life experience and detailed analysis of stats provides some of the most informative, useful and novel approaches to coaching youth baseball. I have read alot of books on coaching youth and this one is a must for any coaches library because it is not just the same old, same old. You won't agree with everything he suggests, you don't have too. But you will find a large number of nuggets that will make your team practice and your team better ball players. I only have th first edition (which I guess this one is) but there is a 2nd edition out that I may have to take a look at.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth Hurts
After coaching youth baseball for sixteen years, after reading numerous books on the subject, I can now say that it's refreshing to read a book that tells it like it is! Mr. Reed identifies the coaching incompetence in us all and tells us how to correct it. I personally can accept this, many other youth coaches may not. If you are a youth coach and have a high opinion of your coaching talent, I do not recommend this book. However, if you are opened minded and seek to greatly improve not only your coaching abilities but also overall enjoyment of the game, I strongly suggest this literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars There is better material out there
I just wanted to let readers know that there are several other books and resources out there with much better content and organization for less money

Having been involved with my own kids in different facets of kids baseball I am always on the lookout for new or original material. Unfortunately this very pricey book does not fill the bill.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Up from Mom of Four Boys
I found this book recommended in the Amazon review of ANOTHER BOOK!I'm so glad I did.I've had kids in youth baseball for 6 years, and have had my various complaints regarding coaching and league rules.Everything Reed writes is extremely logical, reasonable, and practical. All well-organized, well-written, and with just the right amount of wry humor. He suggests ways to bring out the best in players. He outlines exactly how to prepare players for each position. He explains why it doesn't make sense to spend a great deal of time practicing things you aren't likely to improve (like batting) but to spend a lot of time working with players on things they can improve, such as intelligent baserunning and correct understanding of rules. His emphasis on safety is terrific.I bought this book for my husband, but I read it cover-to-cover myself. It makes me want to coach a team next spring. But even if you weren't interested in coaching, the information in this book could help you be a better "baseball parent," too.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
This is a very helpful book and I will be a better coach for reading it.The most valuable points concern the limited time for practice and what to focus on. There are many interesting concepts in the book that are full explained.

However, the book was tarnished on several accounts. It was filled with details of Mr Reed's dubious adult baseball career that I really didn't need. His constant negativity and bitterness towards the players, fellow coaches, league administration, volunteer umpires,etc.... got to be too much by the end.All of this complaining done while reminding the reader it is for the kids.I ended up questioning why Mr. Reed spent so much of his time doing something that caused him so much unhappiness.

Read this book it is worth it.But, be very careful of adopting the attitudes and feelings conveyed in it. ... Read more

Product Description
Ike was president and JFK was running for the Senate. The interstate highway system was snaking across the map, and New England traditions were retreating only grudgingly.

To Boston in the 1950s came a young photographer named Verner Reed. His collection of New England images—most of them taken for Life magazine—are heart-warming reminders of a lost world as near as your own childhood.

The Verner Reed collection, now maintained by the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities, is the subject of a new retrospective. Opening at the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, Massachusetts, in September 2004, the show will tour select New Englandvenues. A Changing World is a beautifully produced hardcover edition of the show catalog, printed in rich black-and-white duotones, with a foreword by SPNEA historian John Stomberg.

You will be a witness to events of the 1950s and 1960s, including:

John F. Kennedy’s run for the Senate

The vigil for Julius and Ethel Rosenberg

The aftermath of the Brinks robbery

A visit to Harvard by T. S. Eliot

A doll wedding at the home of Tasha Tudor

You will also enjoy dozens of New England scenes from a time gone by—a taffy pull, a country fair, headlines posted on chalkboards along Boston’s "Newspaper Row"—captured by the extraordinarily perceptive eye of Verner Reed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great referance book
I like the fact that this dictionary is from English to Choctaw and Choctaw to English

4-0 out of 5 stars Choctaw Dictionary
Considering it was written in 1909, this is a very good dictionary. It shares some of the flaws common to all older dictionaries, such as odd omissions and a lack of sophistication in the entries. It does have a pronunciation guide and a few grammatical notes, unlike many older dictionaries. Very interesting from a historical perspective. If you're interested in learning to speak Choctaw yourself, I recommend the language learning CD-ROM at ISBN# 0806133791, but you wouldn't go wrong having both.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best lexicons of a Native American language ever.
Cyrus Byington was a missionary who lived among the Choctaw of Oklahoma in the mid 19th century. He set out to construct a lexicon of the Choctaw language in order to translate many Christian prayers, hymns, and bible passages into Choctaw. What resulted was one of the most complete lexicons for a Native American language that exists today.Dictionary is not complete however, and many of the words do indeed date the work. However the work itself has two parts; an English-Choctaw, and a Choctaw-English component.A must have for anyone interested in languages. ... Product Description
Electrotherapy Explained is an excellent research-based exploration of the major types of electrophysical agents used in clinical practice, particularly human and also animal. For the fourth edition, two new authors join the writing team, presenting the latest information for today’s clinicians. The text has been completely updated with a major rewrite of the material, particularly that on electrical stimulation. This book continues to focus on evidence: clinical and biophysical evidence that affects how and which electrotherapies may be of use clinically and when. The inclusion of biophysics as well as clinical evidence and principles of application, enables clinicians to move away from traditional ‘recipe-based’ approaches and rely more on their own clinical reasoning. The focus remains on humans but the relevance of the principles for using and applying different modalities is explained clearly, providing guidelines for clinicians across disciplines and specialties. * Up to date research detailing the evidence both supportive and deprecatory for the use of each modality * Written by experts from biophysics and the clinical domains * Comprehensive and well referenced * Clear and well chosen illustrations elucidate the text * Text boxes and summary sections help to break down what is sometimes a complex subject into manageable and memorable chunks * Contraindications and risks have been updated in light of the most recent research * Three books for the price of one – the CD-ROM contains the entire texts of 'Physical Principles Explained' by Low and Reed, and ‘Biophysical Bases of Electrotherapy' by Ward. The text directs readers to the CD for further reading at relevant points ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Wrong description and photo listed!Ask seller which edition he has!
WARNING!!!!!

I listed a very used copy of the 4th edition of this book using the UPC on the rear of the book. Up poped the usual space to add my description of my book.At that time no photo appeared of the item so I just want ahead and listed my book as I would normaly do.

A short while later a lady in AK purchased the book. When she received it she was upset to see it that it was the 4th edition and not the 3rd.In the time between my posting the book and the book being sold a 3rd edtion photo was added.Naturaly the custome thought the book was the 3rd edition and bought it. Something is VERY wrong with Amazon`s database to allow me to post the wrong edition and to allow the poor customer buy the wrong book.

That customer now wants the 3rd edition which I never had to begin with.

Amazon needs to take down the OLD 3rd edition photo and description of this book and replace it with the CURRENT information for the 4th edition.

There is no way I should be forced to issue a refund for a stupid error Amazon made.

My warning to all potential buyers of this book is first contact the seller to see if he has the 3rd or 4th edition of this book posted. I know I can`t be the only seller out there that this has happened to.

All sellers should hold off listing this book untill the problem is resolved.I don`t want anyone else to have to go through this ugly and preventable problem.

Best of luck to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough understanding before quick reference
This book thoroughly explains each commonly used electrotherapy modality, the physiological indications for its use, and gives thorough guidelines and principles for the dosage and application of each.

It is presented in traditional textbook style and makes use of clear diagrams and graphs to aid one's understanding of concepts. After reading each chapter you will be able to apply principles in a logical way to decide on appropriate treatment for your patient's specific condition.

It is however not an "quick reference" book where you can quickly find the dosage to use for a particular modality. The book is aimed at giving the reader a thorough understanding of why and how to use a chosen modality and would not be easy to use at a glance in a busy practice.

Recommended for students and those with time to read chapters thoroughly. ... Read more

Product Description
A true song of the South. In splendid photographs and quiet, musing words, the South comes alive in all its independent history. And not just a South as the North sees it, in all it's flaring cliches, but as it sees itself. This large-sized, magnificent creation of a book portrays magnolia blossoms, of course, but also very much the pluck and charming eccentricity and unaffected worth of the South. The photographs speak of a nation, a section of the country, an old-time goodness unspoiled by consumerism. The 15 original stories by Kathryn Windham ( a respected journalist, some 82 years old) capture the small town flavor of the South in the 1930s as seen from the mind of a happy child who remembers flowers and large families and, especially, the family cook, Thurza. The photographs are full-blown portraits of a heritage and they range across the South, from Florida to Kentucky, from North Carolina to Alabama. In the days before exact recipes, when family cooks made food by feel and look and taste, Thurza made her soups and pies and cornbread and chicken the old way, by instinct and devotion. You look at these pages, entranced. This is the grand South, from the mind and eyes of the South. And it's a family album that tells the story of courtesy and trust and old-time way. The photographs of the people, the land, the structures of life from award-winning photographer Cooper have the same essential thread of consciousness as the stories, and they are the visual representations of goodness and a very special American way of being.
