Product Description

This third edition of Bill Ransom's classic short textbook provides a solid introduction to the study of defects in buildings and, in consequence, to good practice in conservation and repair.

Building failures continue to occur despite continuing experience and growing knowledge in the industry; they may even be on the increase due to cost-cutting measures, the inadequate testing of innovative products and techniques, a lack of maintenance, and user abuse and misuse.

New material includes an outline of the principles of building pathology; new sections on deterioration mechanisms, service life prediction and dampness investigation.

Complete with a handy glossary and bibliography, practitioners and students will find this an excellent source of guidance and information for investigating and avoiding building failures.

2-0 out of 5 stars On a short list..
This is one of only 2 books that I lost interest in finishing to the point where they were put down.I had bought it, read probably half of it, and consciously decided to not bother finishing it.I don't even remember what it was that turned me off, but it still sticks out in my memory.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memories
Searching for a perfect short memoir to share with a class, I was drawn back to this book filled with Ransom's memories of his childhood, his boxer father, time in war zones, faces in cafes.Images from this book are stuck to my brain -- "a leg by itself is heavier than you'd think."
As to that perfect memoir, try the twenty-one lines of "Shooting the Thief" on page 39 and tell me what word could be added or taken way.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book-length Poem in Multiple Styles
In a prized visit to my writing program, Bill Ransom described The Woman and the War Baby as "a book-length poem in multiple styles."Ransom brings to his work the unique perspective of a man who lived a hard scrabble childhood, and who grew up to view war through the lens of an EMT.This is indeed, as the publisher notes, a biography of war and love. There are many reasons Ransom has been nominated for the Pulitzer. As he tends to a dying boy in the arms of the boy's father, Ransom uses his complex lens to bring home the tragedy of death unfolding--for both the boy and the "other mother's son" that shot him.In his stories of his childhood, Ransom vividly reproduces the authentic voice of the child. When he meets his father for the first time, we are there--with every emotion, smell and sound.I assigned this book to a class of fiction writers. Many had wrinkled their noses at the idea of poetry and prose-poetry until they read this book. The Woman and the War Baby left them forever changed in their view of how poetry and story can be woven together in narrative.I also highly recommend Ransom's Learning the Ropes: A Creative Autobiography. If you are in search of an author to invite to a writing class or workshop, I give my word that Bill Ransom will be the writer students will carry with them and talk about decades from now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid recommendation to many a poetry reader
"The Woman and the War Baby" is an anthology of poetry from award winning poet Bill Ransom, who has also served as an international humanitarian, a military man, a firefighter, and other intriguing jobs. His vast experience shines through in his writing, making "The Woman and the War Baby" a solid recommendation to many a poetry reader. "Promise": The drawer you keep/empty for my things. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting concept but...
The concept of the book was interesting but quite frankly didn't hold my interest.I normally don't mind books that jump between different perspectives. This one though just didn't have enough to hold my attention.I felt it very predictable very quickly. To the point that I got bored, read the last 10-20 pages and probably got the gist of the whole book.I'm giving it 2 stars because I did like his descriptions and story line from what I did get through.
I'm only glad that I bought it at a used bookstore for a fraction of the cover price for the paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into Childhood Emotional Trauma
Touted as a novel of Parallel worlds, this story actually presents the points of view of four children abused and traumatized in childhood who try to overcome their situation. The social message here is far more compelling and important than the genre generally presents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Strange and Wonderful
This is my favorite book by Bill Ransom. The grouping of prose and poetry make for a fascinating read. I read it all in one sitting as I couldn't put it down. Bill's real and imaginary life co-mingle in his prose to create riveting stories and impossible (but oh so true) scenarios. Great read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Portable Bill Ransom
Here's a collection of Ransom's finest poetry (nominated for both the Pulitzer and the Nat'l Book Award), short fiction, novel excerpts and creative nonfiction. This book melds several genres together, which makes shelving it in bookstores a problem. Therefore, it's sadly been overlooked. It is autobiography only in that each selection is tied directly somehow to the author's life.A sleeper of a book that's a great bargain! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars From Back Cover
A WORLD OF WATER

In The Jesus Incident Herbert and Ransom introduced Ship, an artificial intelligence that believed it was God, abandoning its unworthy human cargo on the all-sea world of Pandora. Now centuries have passed. The descendants of humanity, split into Mermen and Islanders, must reunite... because Pandora's original owner is returning to life!

4-0 out of 5 stars The lazarus effect review.
In my eyes, this is a very good book. I suggest you spend a week or two to read it. You will feel better after you read is. It makes me wonder my this wasnt a hit instead of Dune. They are both outstanding books and this book gets my gratitude.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lazarus Effect
I feel that people everywhere should read the Pandora series. It mixes action, love, literature, and culture into an action packed yet down to earth book. I feel that Frank herbert, and Bill Ransomhave created a marvelous Series that shows how people are nto what they seem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Voidship strikes again
Unlike Dune, this series has been out of print for some time. Shame! No one does it better than Herbert but Dune-Mania has left too much of his best work unread and unknown. Dune was a masterpiece, no question. But the series devolved into action novels - the work of creating his universe did not have to be re-done so the rest was just what happens next (and as Brian continues the series, what happened before. The Voidship series is different. Beginning with Destination: Void, which establishes the premise, each novel must reestablish the world in which it is set. Each set of characters has very new hurdles and new forms of intelligent life(? at least self-awareness) to deal with, each with their own world view. A good marketing bet would be to reintroduce these novels in paperback, capitalizing on the popularity of the Dune series. Let the new generation of sf readers discover the other worlds of Frank Herbert.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good read!
Well I hate long reviews so here's what I have to say about The Lazarus Effect. If you read any of Peter F. Hamiltons books like The Reality Dysfunction then you should enjoy this one. It's Biotechnology vs.Technology, Mermen vs. Mutes ... Read more

Minor, (18441899) was a physician, businessman, civic and political leader and the only person to have been elected as mayor of Seattle, Washington and Port Townsend, Washington and founder of the Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern Railway. Thomas Taylor Minor was born on February 20, 1844, in Manepy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres (19.3 mi) off the southern coast of India. He was a son of Eastman Strong Minor, who was descended from an old and esteemed Connecticut family. He was a successful printer. He closed his printing business and left Boston, Massachusetts with his first wife, Lucy Bailey, in October 1833 as Congregational missionaries to Ceylon, to spread the gospel of Christianity from India through Singapore and up to Bangkok. He returned to the United States in July 1851 and settled in New Haven, Connecticut. His mother, Judith Manchester Taylor, was born in Madison, Madison County, New York in 1814 and died in New York in 1900. She was an orphan and the daughter of Isaac and Judith Taylor. She ran the local school in Ceylon, learned Singhalese, and taught it to her 2 stepchildren as well as her own six children. He was a direct descendant of Thomas Miner who came originally from Chew Magna in North East Somerset, England, and sailed on the Lyon's Whelp and was a founder of New London, Connecticut and later of Stonington, Connecticut. He married Grace Palmer in 1634. She was the daughter of Walter Palmer (Puritan). Minor was also an early New England diarist. He ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25458916 ... Read more
