Medieval Expose
Mario Puzo, author of The Godfather, also wrote a book involving one of his great interests, Medieval Italy around the late 1400's and early 1500's.This book is about the Borgia Family, Rodrigo, Cesare, Lucretia, Juan and Jofre.It is an enlightening historical fiction about the trials and tribulations of this family.

Rodrigo is a Roman Catholic Cardinal and the others are his children (unofficial, since he was not allowed marriage and was not married).He had other children by other mistresses.Through political machinations he is elected Pope Alexander VI.

One of the themes that becomes apparent in this story is that there is rampant corruption in the Church hierarchy in Rome, by power-hungry and greedy Cardinals and others.Poisoning rivals seems to be a favorite pasttime and bloody assassinations as well.Thus, the Church hierarchy has become a political body rather than a spiritual one, each member vying with each other for positions, power and wealth.What is clear is that most if not all of these Church leaders have rationalized their actions as best for the Church; but then, Jesus said in a Gospel that in the End Days, people would do evil thinking they were being righteous.Puzo makes that theme very clear.

Also described is the seamy side of Medieval life, with marriages among the leading families required to be consummated with witnesses, even the Pope witnessing the consummation of the marriage of his daughter Lucretia and her new husband.It is also of note that Puzo makes Lucretia out to be a docile victim of her father's political machinations for alliances between Italian states and that she had no immoral agenda of her own.

It is no wonder that the rank corruption of the Church leaders of that day ultimately led in a few decades to the reforms of the Protestant Movement, and well justified.But then, one cannot condemn an organization because of the corruption and abuses of some of its leaders.This book is an eye opener for anyone having a sketchy knowledge of Medieval Italy and the Popes of that period, and desiring to gain a greater understanding. ...
