2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
This product was advertised as new and while I don't doubt that it was, it was not in mint condition. The cover was shabby and the pages were slightly yellowed at the edges. It was bought as a gift. I wonder whether I should have just bought a second hand copy and saved some money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Name Is Asher Lev-a modern day story of 'to thine own self be true"
This is a poignant story of following your dreams at any cost written by the late Judaic author Chaim Potok.

Potok takes us into the other world-like realm of the Chassidic environs of New York where we come upon a brilliant Chassdic yeshiva student named Asher Lev studying the Talmud and other writings.

He has a very promising career once ordained. Asher comes from a long of Chassidic rabbis who can trace their roots to the Baal-Shem Tov, the 17th Century Polish Jewish Mystic and Founder of Chassidism. And he is next in line to care on his family's long rabbinic lineage.

But there's a catch-22, Asher while immersed in his studies, has a secret passion to be an artist. He wants to study art in Paris.

Be drawn into Asher's struggle within himself between his duty and moral obligation of carrying on the family rabbinic biz or be true to himself and not give up on his desired passion to paint nudes in Paris.

If you want to know how the story goes, you'll have to read it for yourself. I highly recommend this book which left an indelible impression on me over thirty years ago. If you are struggling with fulfilling your dreams, this Potok book will surely help you continue on your journey."

5-0 out of 5 stars Coming of age tale that made me the person I am today....
I began reading this book on my last year of high school, and wasn't able to finish in time before the end of the year.(It is quite a long book.) The librarian felt I needed to finish the story and she supplied me with my own copy.I still cherish it because it's not only important to me because she gave it to me and she was influential to me, but because the story of Asher Lev is a tale that so many can relate to.

It's a story of a child who goes against his parents wishes and grows up to become a painter....a very famous, highly praised, and criticized painter.

The story of Asher begins with him as an adult speaking of the rumors of him being a traitor to his people. You see, Asher is the man who painted the famous Brooklyn Crucifixion. And he is Jewish."How can someone being of the Jewish faith make such a masterful painting of the killing of Christ?" everyone is wondering.

Asher tells his story. And what a sad and heart wrenching one it is.His early paintings as a young boy are made with crayons and paper, and as he learns to paint with oil and canvas, he learns to be a man.

It's a great story, and I recommend to anyone. ... Read more

Product Description
First Edition assumed. SIMON AND SCHUSTER, NY 1967. There are few stories that offer more warmth, wisdom, or generosity than this tale of two boys, their fathers, their friendship, and the chaotic times in which they live. The book on the surface explores religious faith, the intellectually committed, and the passionately observant. The struggles addressed in The Chosen are familiar to families of all faiths and in all nations throughout the world. THIS IS THE AUTHORS FIRST BOOK! ... Read more
