Prometheus Award Winning Author! Here is the finest work of H. Beam Piper (1904-64),-an engineer turned science fiction writer. Little Fuzzy and Graveyard of Dreams belong to his famous "Terrian Federation" series. Time Crime belongs to Piper's tales of various agents of the "Paratime Police" as they work to prevent tyranny and war across the timelines. Genesis and Operation RSVP show the author's mind at work outside the confines of either series. One of the year's greatest reading bargains. ... Read more

Product Description
This Halcyon Classics ebook is H. Beam Piper's mystery MURDER IN THE GUNROOM.

The Lane Fleming collection of early pistols and revolvers was one of the best in the country. When Fleming was found dead on the floor of his locked gunroom, a Confederate-made Colt-type percussion .36 revolver in his hand, the coroner's verdict was "death by accident." But Gladys Fleming had her doubts. Enough at any rate to engage Colonel Jefferson Davis Rand--better known just as Jeff--private detective and a pistol-collector himself, to catalog, appraise, and negotiate the sale of her late husband's collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book is a collection of five short stories, written by the incomparable H. Beam Piper, and set in his Paratime universe (or more correctly, multiverse). In this milieu, human society has developed the technology to move laterally between parallel universes. This advanced society looks upon itself as "First Level." Second Level contains societies that are about as advanced as First Level, Third Level is less advanced, our own "Europo-American" world is firmly on the Fourth Level, and Fifth Level contains worlds where (for one reason or another) human life does not exist. Within each of these levels (except First), there are many parallel worlds, many only marginally different, and totaling up to ten-to-the-hundred-thousandth time-lines!

Protecting the secret of the existence of this multiverse is the Paratime Police, and these are their stories. 1) He Walked Around The Horses reveals the fate of an unfortunate Napoleonic diplomat accidentally moved to a parallel time-line where the American and French Revolutions were crushed. 2) Police Operation introduces Verkan Vall, Special Chief's Assistant, who needs to clean up a dangerous Venusian pet, which was accidentally left on our time-line. 3) In Last Enemy, a Second Level society has scientifically proven reincarnation, and now it's up to Vall to rescue his ex-wife Hadron Dalla from the resulting explosion. 4) Time Crime pits Vall and the Paratime Police against a well-organized band of criminals, who are jeopardizing the Paratime secret. 5) And, in Temple Trouble, when a group of First Level workers fall into the hands of a Fourth Level king, it's up to Vall to ensure that the Paratime secret isn't wrung from them.

These stories are interesting to read. They are somewhat outdated, but then again, considering that they reflect a completely different story, a certain amount of tolerance should be exercised. This is a great book, one which any fan of alternate time-lines should consider reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars All of Piper's Paratime short stories.
Consists of "He Walked Around the Horses", "Police Operation", "Last Enemy", "Time Crime", and "Temple Trouble".

Briefly, paratime travel consists of not going backward or forward in time, but crosstime - from one version of history to another. Paratime is divided into levels, sectors, belts, and finally individual timelines, based on how similar the histories are. Level is based on how successful humans were in colonizing Earth, ranging from First Level (where the Paratimers originate) to the uninhabited Fifth Level.

The paramount law for the paratimers is to preserve the Paratime Secret - never let other timelines realize that the paratimers are among them, siphoning off resources to preserve their own civilization. The stories in this book cover the Paratime Police, who preserve the Paratime Secret by any means necessary.

Another reviewer has already covered "He Walked Around the Horses". Another Piper story in that vein would be "Crossroads of Destiny" in The Worlds of H. Beam Piper.

"Police Operation", the first proper Paratime Police story, introduces Tortha Karf, chief of the Paratime Police, and his assistant Verkan Vall. How do you cover up, in the 1950s USA, the appearance of a Venusian nighthound?

"Last Enemy" introduces Hadron Dalla, a First Level psychologist working undercover on a Second Level timeline, who inadvertently turns the political structure of that civilization on its ear...

"Time Crime" explores First Level civilization in more detail, as Vall and Dalla uncover a huge paratime slave trade.

In "Temple Trouble", Transtemporal Mining Corporation runs into trouble with their uranium franchise among the Hulgun. The temples of Yat-Zar on that timeline, which they operate as a cover, have suddenly acquired a competing religion...

Other books in this vein: - Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen, by H. Beam Piper - Crosstime Agents, by Andre Norton - Quest Crosstime, by Andre Norton (A number of Norton's books involve crosstime travel, but these two are closest to the Paratime universe).

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read, if you find a copy
This collection of the Paratime Police stories from 'Astounding' are definitely interesting reading.Readers might be less impressed by the Science Fiction, as by the stories themselves. The first 'He walked Around the Horses' was described by Piper to Jerry Pournelle as having happened to the author in an earlier life (Piper was a believer in re-incarnation...perhaps that can explain his suicide in the early '60's escaping debt and depression). The remaining stories center around the Paratime Police, and are more police procedural stories than hard SF.The impressive part of the SF is in the relatively simple description of what would now be described as 'quantum time'...the theory that all time is simultaneous, and all probabilities are happening at the same time. The Paratimers surf the worlds of probability, and live in secret, benign parasitism throughout these worlds. While the science in these stories is most definitely on the level of 'space opera', the characters are sufficiently compelling to keep the reader in the book to its end. ... The Infra-Medians
By Sewell Peaslee Wright

Into a land of shadows and lost
souls goes Pete Grahame in search
of his hapless friends.

There was no sense to the note. There was no sense to anything that Vic Butler did, for that matter. Where he hid away his vast scientific knowledge in that rattle-brained, red-haired head of his has always been a mystery to me. The note read:

Dear Pete:
If you get this, I-m in a jam that promises some action.
Drive out, if plane-peddling is palling on you, and bust into the lab. I-m leaving another note there for you, old son, and after you read it you can let your conscience be your guide.
Bring a gat along, and plenty of ammo. Hope-s away, at Aunt Cleo-s, so don-t get in touch with her and spoil her visit.
-Vic

The Whispering Spheres
By R. R. Winterotham

An alien life-form-metallic sinister-threatening
all mankind with annihilation.

CHAPTER I - The Cauldron

The factory saw-toothed the horizon with its hideous profile as the moon rose in the east. The red glow of the furnaces bathed the tall buildings, the gigantic scaffolds, the cord-like elevated pipelines and the columnar smokestacks in the crimson of anger. Even the moon seemed to fade as the long-fingered smokestacks reached toward it belching their pollution. The air, which should have been clean, was filled with the reek of unfamiliar odors.

From the machine shop, where giant cannon were forged into smooth, sleek instruments of death, came noise: unchecked, unmuffled, blasphemous din. But something odd was afoot. There was a sudden hush.

Out Around Rigel
By Robert H. Wilson

An astounding chronicle of two Lunarians' conquest of time and interstellar space.

The sun had dropped behind the Grimaldi plateau, although for a day twilight would linger over the Oceanus Procellarum. The sky was a hazy blue, and out over the deeper tinted waves the full Earth swung. All the long half-month it had hung there above the horizon, its light dimmed by the sunshine, growing from a thin crescent to its full disk three times as broad as that of the sun at setting. Now in the dusk it was a great silver lamp hanging over Nardos, the Beautiful, the City Built on the Water. The light glimmered over the tall white towers, over the white ten-mile-long adamantine bridge running from Nardos to the shore, and lit up the beach where we were standing, with a brightness that seemed almost that of day.

"Once more, Garth," I said. "I'll get that trick yet."

DAY OF THE MORON
BY H. BEAM PIPER

It's natural to trust the unproven word of the fellow who's "on my side"-but the emotional moron is on no one's side, not even his own. Once, such an emotional moron could, at worst, hurt a few. But with the mighty, leashed forces Man employs now....

There were still, in 1968, a few people who were afraid of the nuclear power plant. Oldsters, in whom the term "atomic energy" produced semantic reactions associated with Hiroshima. Those who saw, in the towering steam-column above it, a tempting target for enemy-which still meant Soviet-bombers and guided missiles...

Scott Melroy was among these last. He knew, as a matter of fact, that there had been several nasty, meticulously unpublicized, near-catastrophes at the Long Island Nuclear Reaction Plant.

An excerpt:

"Your door's marked Tri-State Detective Agency, Jefferson Davis Rand, Investigation and Protection. Well, I want to know how much the collection's worth, and who'll pay the closest to it. That's investigation, isn't it? And I want protection from being swindled. And don't tell me you can't do it. You're a pistol-collector, yourself; you have one of the best small collections in the state. And you're a recognized authority on early pistols; I've read some of your articles in the Rifleman. If you can't handle this, I don't know who can."

Rand's frown deepened. He wondered how much Gladys Fleming knew about the principles of General Semantics. Even if she didn't know anything, she was still edging him into an untenable position. He hastily shifted from the attempt to identify his business with the label, "private detective agency."

"Well, here, Mrs. Fleming," he explained. "My business, including armed-guard and protected-delivery service, and general investigation and protection work, requires some personal supervision, but none of it demands my exclusive attention. Now, if you wanted some routine investigation made, I could turn it over to my staff, maybe put two or three men to work on it. But there's nothing about this business of yours that I could delegate to anybody; I'd have to do it all myself, at the expense of neglecting the rest of my business. Now, I could do what you want done, but it would cost you three or four times what you'd gain by retaining me."

Lord Kalvan Of The Otherwhen

H. Beam Piper

Written in 1965 Lord Kalvan Of The Otherwhen is a story about a Pennsylvania State Trooper, Calvin Morrison, who is accidentally transported to an alternate reality while chasing down a criminal.

The new reality, still in Pennsylvania and still in the same time, is completely different. Instead of the westward expansion of Europeans, we have a world where they moved east, across Asia, and eventually into N. America. A N. America that is currently occupied by feudalistic monarchies not much more advanced than King Henry VIII's world.

In this set up, a professional like Calvin Morrison can have quite an impact.

Written in 1965 the book isn't dated and manages to remain relevant in 2009. Piper does this by a precise employment of "hard-science" that fills out the story and gets it moving along wile simultaneously remaining general and aloof enough not to be bogged down in techno-babble that would inevitably pass into obsoletion like an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Calvin Morrison is a welcomed throw back to the "all American" hero that can improvise, adapt and overcome with the best of them. His character is simple, but quite compelling. Think: Clint Eastwood.

Easily, this is the best book I have read all year, sharing #1 with Larry Niven's Draco's Tavern. It's good sci-fi and quite a page turner.

It gets 5 $100 hookers out of 5.

1-0 out of 5 stars lord kalvan of nowhere
This has to be the silliest idea I've ever seen for an alternate-universe story. So the American East Coast is more primitive than ours because the ancient Europeans migrated east instead of west?If they did that they would have come into contact with India, China, and the Native Americans during the migration. No mention of that, nor any sign of it in their culture.Instead they're just transplanted midievals.Or do the other cultures not exist for some reason in this timeline?

Supposedly the theme of the story is to study how the posession of gunpowder can change history. But Piper ruins that by having the Paratime cops give Kalvan secret aid -- which, incidently, Kalvan is too stupid to realize that he's getting. Some hero.A real dramatic ending would have had Kalvan catch the cops and demand the right to choose which timeline he'll live in.

If you want a good alt-universe story, read MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE, or LATHE OF HEAVEN, or THE DIFFERENCE ENGINE.Not this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cavaliers and Roundheads abounding
This was not my first Piper, nor my second. I was well into reading Piper before discovering this, but wow, what an incredible adventure this started for me. And now with the continuations that Roland Green and John Carr have produced, this Kalvan Canon (That is a Pun) just grows and grows. Much like Hos-Hostigos.

I had long since read L Sprague de Camp, Lest Darkness Falls, the story where a man of our times (and Calvin Morrison is a Pennsylvania State Trooper from the 50's or 60's) returns to another time where the use of the technology from now can change that past they have entered. We see it also in Leo Frankowski's Crosstime Engineer series. We see it often. We see it in the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, so we have Twain laying out a format for this 100 years before Piper and those others I have cited.

What we have is the effective use of Pike and Musket, the English Civil War, the Thirty Years War, in an alternate universe centered on Pennsylvania. That is the premise. It works for me. There are not that many pages but within them we have the introduction, the ability to change society, the ability to stabilize a country headed to defeat and turn it around.

Our hero emerges as just that, a hero. Our villains are men who want power. All the elements are there and in under 250 pages we have it all. Battles, derring-do, a little romance. A great romp that I return to again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent read.
"Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen" is an excellent read. The pace is relatively fast, with good action.Better yet, Piper puts in plenty of material to make us, all, think.

Perhaps the setting of this story prejudices me in its favor.I grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania.Everything in this story occurs in North Central Pennsylvania, which has some of the most beautiful scenery in the lower 48 states. It is perfect territory for the type of warfare that Piper describes.

The story follows Pennsylvania State Trooper Calvin Morrison, who wakes after an accident to find himself in familiar territory, but disturbingly different.Everyone speaks a language he never heard. There is a piece of trouble and Calvin decides to help.Calvin awakes in what seems to be a castle.By coincidence, he has 'saved' the local princess. As he recovers and learns the odd language, Calvin becomes Kalvan. And, finds that his new friends are about to be conquered by some forces to the North.Somehow, the religious order that controls the production of gunpowder, and worships Styphon, is supplying the enemies of his friends and not supplying his friends with gunpowder.Kalvan applies some personal knowledge to make gunpowder. What follows is spell-binding.

Calvin/Kalvan has, somehow, slipped into a parallel time line. The result is unexpected by the only folks who know how to move from time line to time line.

Read the story for the sheer fun.Or, read the story for the philosophic questions that it raises.Either way, I enjoyed the story and recommend it strongly.

5-0 out of 5 stars The start of the Best Alternate World series yet created!
The world of alternate military science fiction is a crowded one. Many are to say the least drek but some awesome ones grab your attention and keep it, SM Stirling's Dies The Fire and Draka, Turtledove's line on a bitter US/Confederacy competition, Tolkien's series of course, and finally Thomas Harlan's alternate Rome are ones come to mind.

But the one that has held my attention for much of my life is H. Beam's Piper Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen.Since H. Beam Piper's original story, 3 other books have come out, 2 of them in the last few years under Jon Carr and Roland Green. As good as the follow on books have been, none touch the subject as well as Mr. Piper's work.

Take a contempory state trooper, Calvin Morrison and dump him into an alternate North America populated by Germanic settlers in a 13th century late medieval social setting. Add in a despotic House of Styphon which tightly controls the settled areas of this world by its knowledge and production of gunpowder and you have an explosion!Tightly written by a man who knew his military history, Kalvan for all his human foibles; becomes a small kingdom's hero, marries a princess, and (temporily anyway) defeats the evil church oppressing them all.Add in a time travellin/alternate world culture that parastically lives on millions of such alternate worlds and you have a cracking good story.

This book is one of the first real alternate world stories that worked. For all those who like good military fiction, empathic characters, and the idea of the indespensible man, this book is for you!
