Product Description
Opening with a powerful cycle of elegies for her long-distant, half-brother, this major new collection by one of our bestselling poets then goes on to include both serious and funny poems about women and poems about the precarious balance of nature, ending with the beautiful, life-affirming "The Art of Blessing the Day.".Amazon.com Review
When a talented writer and feminist thinker like Marge Piercy asks WhatAre Big Girls Made Of?, the wise reader pays attention. Piercy givesplenty of answers in this many-faceted book. As in her previous 12 poetrycollections, as well as her 14 novels, she creates edgy, funny surfacesthat mask deeper inquiries. For instance, she offers several elegies to herapparently nasty half brother; though the poems roll the cadences of sadfamily stories often retold, they're made fresh by Piercy's search for someangle to celebrate, until she is finally only able to say, in "Brother-lessSix: Unconversation,"

I was a white cedar swamp you traversed
on a wooden walkway above the black water.
You were a closet from which odd toys
and bizarre tools fell out on my head.
Though these elegies begin What Are Big Girls Made Of?, the rest ofthe book is a lively entanglement with sex, middle-aged love, and politics.Piercy's wit can sever pretension, as in "The Promotion," in which shetells how a friend's new job turned him into a murderer, or in "The Gray Flannel Sexual Harassment Suit," in which an Audenish third-personomniscient voice delineates the sort of woman "we" allow to file suchsuits: upwardly mobile white virgins. Piercy diagnoses social problems, butshe also advances, in "The Art of Blessing the Day," a sense of politicsderived from experience, an awareness "[t]hat things / work in increments andepicycles and sometimes / leaps that half the time fall back down."Ultimately, What Are Big Girls Made Of? concerns itself with theprecarious balances of middle age: what to forgive, what to condemn, andhow to talk about it. --Edward Skoog ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
Any lover of modern poetry(especially female)should appreciate this or truly love it. Smart and enduring.

5-0 out of 5 stars she's the best
Marge Piercy is one of my favorite poets. She make no apologies for her past or opinions, and uses her poetry to share equally her disillusions with family members, her disgust with our society, and her deep love for her cats. If you have problems with strong women who say what they mean then don't bother reading this. You won't appreciate it, and you'll probably make up false reasons for hating it.

She is a "real" person...I saw her at a reading and was struck by her voice and her modesty.(And her kindness considering I probably made a fool out of myself:)Marge Piercy's poetry and fiction are incredible. She is one of the greats. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the sexiest poems I've ever read
Without a doubt, Marge Piercy is my favorite living poet.I was terribly disappointed to discover that this collection is out of print since it's my favorite. Her poems explore many ordinary life experiences--coming to terms with her relationship with her parents, her travels in Eastern Europe, celebrations of cats...My favorite poems in this collection are the ones celebrating sexuality.Piercy describes these relations in both earthy and spiritual terms. This is definitely not the poetry that put you to sleep in high school English class!Track down a copy and buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An arresting collection of poetry
If you have not been exposed to modern poetry, to the extent that all you have are some fever dreams of a classroom with someone stressing meter and verse while you sat watching the clock, this book should open youreyes.

This is one of Marge Piercy's strongest works. The poem "JoyRoad and Livernois" is worth the price of the book.

If you writepoetry you will find the risks Piercy takes in her work instructive to yourown writing--at least I have. ... Read more

Product Description
In this book's introduction, 'Why Do We Collect Pictures of Cats?' Marge Piercy tells us,'Deborah DeWit Marchant belongs to a long tradition of distinguished painters who have found cats irresistible.' Ms. Piercy's introduction illuminates why we find cats irresistible and catalogs their many qualities we find intriguing. At the center of our relationships with cats good or bad lies our need to ascribe human emotions and intelligence to them. . . . Ms. Marchant's point of view, told engagingly in this book, opens the way to further contemplation of this subject. She says, 'Painting cats is a complicated business. They are not like landscapes, or cozy lamp-lit interiors, or windows with a view. . . . For a domesticated animal, the cat is bewitchingly inscrutable about its true nature, so we tend to describe cats as we believe them to be, not necessarily as we know them to be.' The story of her life with cats brings us along willingly, especially with the arrival of the feral cat, Cabbit, at her household. The process of Cabbit s taming is heartwarming and thoughtful, leading to an epiphany shared by the artist and the reader: the tentative fear of painting cats is conquered as she wonders, 'What more could I bring to my work, if I could be like a cat?' . . . The book can be enjoyed on many levels. There are the meditations by two cat lovers who have written engagingly about their passion for them. Then there is the vivid imagery that delights and provokes us. Your options are to flip through the book and enjoy the artwork, or to flop down on the couch to immerse yourself in the complicated world of everyday cat behavior. ... Read more

As a blighted neighborhood is invaded by a university -- an institution that promises to bring new life -- the people who live there are forced to go along with too many changes, too fast. There is Anna, a woman living through a succession of losses -- marriage, job, home, and lover. And Rowley, a blue-eyed soul singer whose greatest limitation is his belief that he is powerless. Together with Leon, an underground filmmaker, and Caroline, a beautiful woman with a dark and desperate secret, they watch the progress of the wrecking ball, hoping, as always, for something better . . . maybe even love.

Product Description
This study analyses The Passion of New Eve by Angela Carter, Orlando by Virginia Woolf, Woman on the Edge of Time by Marge Piercy andThe Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula Le Guin from the perspective of écriture féminine. After a thorough discussion of the roots of écriture féminine, the theory of the French feminists is put into practice in the analysis of the novels. The study asserts that the concepts of bisexuality, the other and the voice are common elements in novels of écriture féminine, thereby the novelists mentioned in the study follow the propositions of Hélène Cixous, Julia Kristeva and Lucé Irigaray. The argument of the study is that the use of écriture féminine as portrayed with reference to the novels, can be an efficient way in deconstructing the patriarchal system of language. Literature has a significant influence on social life, however women cannot make themselves heard using the language of patriarchy. Thereforean alternative such as écriture féminine is essential. This study shows how this alternative can be practiced in various ways and it also creates the opportunity to consider the possibilities of alternative lives if this kind of thinking is widespread. ... Product Description

"No other poet of this generation has more consistently identified herself with the political and social movements of her own times," writes Margaret Atwood in the New York Times Book Review. Recited in speeches by Gloria Steinem and Howard Zinn, and in rallies from coast to coast, Piercy's political poems have become anthems for social change. But to locate these poems, Piercy fans have had to hunt through 16 different volumes. Louder, We Can't Hear You, is an audio CD collection of 30 of her most popular political poems with an accompanying eight panel fold-out.

In favorites such as "To Be of Use," written during the Vietnam War; "For Strong Women," and "The Low Road," during the women's movement; "No One Came Home," an elegy for 9-11; and "Choices," written in reaction to Laura Bush's White House invitation and included in the Poets Against the War anthology, Piercy confronts the social issues of our times for a new generation of activists, in words that have become "catchphrases," according to Erica Jong. "Poem after poem has that kind of authority, power, and verbal brilliance."

"For anyone interested in what's been happening on the cutting edge during the past two decades," says The New York Times, "she's clearly essential reading." Louder, We Can't Hear You is not only the first collection of Marge Piercy's political poems, but her first audio collection in twenty years; truly an historical document.

Marge Piercy is the author of 17 novels including the national best-sellers Gone to Soldiers, The Longings of Women and the modern classics, Woman on the Edge of Time and He, She and It. She is the author of 16 books of poetry, including the latest Colors Passing Through Us (Knopf ) and The Moon is Always Female, which has sold 100,000 copies.
