Product Description
On the streets of a democratic Russia, espionage, civil war and Mafiya control dominate a new kind of battlefield. Bolan's mission: locate, extract and deliver a ruthless Russian arms dealer to a transport team ready to take him back to the United States to stand trial.

But the Russian made friends in high places—CIA, FBI, KGB—during his career as both a player and a pawn. With compromising leaks high up in counterintelligence circles, and a hard force of specialized handlers keeping him alive and doing deals with rogue nations, the arms merchant is a hard man to get to, much less take alive. Bolan doesn't get hung up on odds, risk or the roll of the dice. He's focused on a mission gone sour in hostile territory—and his personal commitment to finishing by any means necessary. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars "MERCENARIES TRADE LIVES FOR GUNS IN THE FLORIDA KEYS"

The Executioner....Mack Bolan....#379

The Executioner or Mack Bolan series of books has a new author: Keith R. A. DeCandido, an experienced author of many other books including but not limited to the Star Trek line of books. In my opinion Mr. DeCandido does a fairly good job capturing the big guy but not entirely 100%. One thing a reader seldom gets with Bolan are non-professional assistants that Mack cannot like or doesn't trust, Bolan gets many in this book.It seems he especially dislikes and disrespects Lola Maxwell throughout the story, but yet Lola is an earthy woman most readers will enjoy.Small point yet a valid one I feel, for me this undertone detracts from the overall flow of the book. Hence 3-stars rather than 4. Another point, if the DEA is known to have 'leak' threatening this mission why would Bolan place himself and others in a safe house known as such by a DEA agent? As readers will know this almost amounts to a mortal mistake for both Bolan and Maxwell.

The story is pretty commonplace, Bolan is sent to assist the BATF, much to their dislike, to shutdown an arms running operation, with DEA leak connection.Using undercover people such as Lola Maxwell to do so.Bolan has no liking whatever for Maxwell and her associates yet is forced to use and rely on them due to their knowledge of the Florida Keys where this operation takes place. And in the final scenes Lola actually saves the big guy's life.As true to most Mack Bolan books, the action and lead is fast and furious.Ex-marines, gunrunners, dope dealers, a spy in the DEA providing info to the bad guys, and people who like to blow things up, and you have fairly explosive book.

All's well that ends well, although along the way we have terrific body count, with a few friends down as well. Loved the locale of the Florda Keys, hopefully GOLD EAGLE will place more stories in that area.Another solid read in the Mack Bolan series.Hopefully Keith will get the Bolan character down a little better in future books, but this book remains a better than 'ok' read.

Live large......stay hard, as the big guy would say.

The illicit activities of an organized crime family draw Mack Bolan to California, where he uncovers a deadly power struggle. It seems a branch of this family tree extends to a small town in Oregon where the Mob-s influence runs deep. Following the bloody trail, Bolan takes his war across the state line.

Profits from prostitution, drugs and numbers rackets tied to several local businesses are being funneled to a radical ecoterrorist group more than willing to strike out against anything--and anyone--standing in its way. A war is brewing and the small town is under siege. Faced with mounting casualties, the Executioner will have to use his own methods to clean up the environment.

3-0 out of 5 stars "A DANGEROUS SPORT MASKS A DEADLY THREAT"

This Mack Bolan/Executioner novel #378 was written by Darwin Holmstrom, it is the first he has done in the Mack Bolan saga.

Both the writing and plotting are very good, and the author has the Executioner character down pretty well. The setting of the novel is well thought out also with action swinging from Qatar to Monterey, California to the San Francisco-Oakland area.

Terrorists have stolen weapons grade Plutonium 239 in enough quantity to fashion a nuclear device. The international sport of motorcycle racing is used as a background for this story, with elements of the Philippine BNG aligned with thugs of Malayasian and Arabic Islam to fashion an explosive device to take out San Francisco and much of Oakland. These extremists detest Western ways and Americans in general.Although the BNG isn't privy to all plans, they are destined to be blown up as well, as the other Near Eastern Islamic men make their escape to safety.Once the BNG members become aware of this fact (courtesy of Mack Bolan information service) the operation doesn't set as well with them as it did at first. The remaining BNG members are collectively looking for a bucket in which to through in the proverbial towel.

Bolan gets knocked around quite a bit in this book more so than usual. From an intial broken rib, to being thrown off a motor bike at close to 100 mph, to a serious, massive knife wound to his arm (does not see doctor-nor receive stitches), to other bruises along the way, he still carries on with the mission.Though we are dealing with fiction and fantasy here, it's difficult to digest.

Even when it looks as if he has lost it all, Mack keeps on hoping he can at last succeed. Some of the beatings and other abuse dished out to the Executioner may not be well received by some readers, and I would hope too the author would trim back on some of this in any future book he might write.Just the rib injuries or the motorcycle fall would probably be more than enough to put most people on the sidelines. Plus all of this not only gets 'old' it also messes with the flow of the plot. You keep thinking how can Bolan keep on after all this rough play he is receiving? As stated, not plausible at all.

Though the story seemingly goes on forever, especially for a reader such as myself with little to no interest in international motorcycle racing, I can offer a 3-star plus rating for the book. However, I doubt the book will ever reach the level of being mentioned as one of the best in the Executioner saga.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read more than one chapter
I thought this was a fine entrant in the Executioner series. Sure, there's a lot of action, but isn't that what one expects in an action novel? And reviewing it after reading just one chapter? Does the previous reviewer have enough capacity for abstract thought to even understand what a review is, much less write one? Sheesh.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hero vs whipping boy
I just started reading Death Run (by Darwin Holmstrom) and am still in chapter one. However, the Executioner has already been shot (wearing a vest), chased, knocked unconscious and captured.I can only wonder what other abuse will be heaped upon our hero for the next 160 pages.
I like a hero who takes charge, not physical abuse. In the preceding issue by Mike Linaker, Desperate Cargo, the Executioner battles extreme odds through 187 pages with minor cuts, bruises and a minor gunshot injury. That's a hero, which is what I expect.
The liberal editors ruined the Doc Savage Series fifty years ago by making it more "believable!"The Destroyer series was probably terminated because the physical exploits of the stars (Chiun and Remo) were equally "UN-believable!"
I read for escapism, not realism. If the liberal-sissy trend continues to weaken the hero character, I'll be forced to terminate my interest in The Executioner and look elsewhere.I'd welcome more Linaker-type stories depicting real heroism!

3-0 out of 5 stars War Against The Mafia
I grew up reading the later books in this series, in the 1980's, which were written by other authors. This is a very different Mack Bolan in book #1, and a very different presentation. Pendleton has a great economic writing style, and he uses 180 pages more effectively than any of the other authors in the series - no world domination missing nuke story here. Strong characterization. There are some great comic-bookish philosophic monologues, and he can write good dialog.

On the negative side: it drags in places, the plot is absurd, and the explicit sex scenes are jarring and completely gratuitous to the storyline. This Mack Bolan is also not all that sympathetic. He's not above joining in on the spoils and lifestyle of the criminals, or dropping obligations when they're inconvenient - like his brother - which is tough to read for a fan of the later books.

But I'll give it 3 stars because it's so dated in a good way (like muscle cars), fun, and pulpy; and it spawned 400+ other books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Superb and everlasting!
One of the longest lasting action titles still around and still the best in my opinion.
This book started it all and even to this more modern day of readers it's a great action packed reading experiance.
Sure, it may show Bolan as a vigilante but the more you get into the book, and the series, it will also show his compassion, inner struggle with what he has chosen to do and so much that makes this character always interesting.
If a reader can still find War Against the Mafia then I'd recommend it because it will still appeal to action lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and fast service
Got my book quick and in very good shape. I hope to buy more from this seller

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
Mack Bolan is a US Army sergeant, and a sniper in the Vietnam war. In fact, he is so good at that, he has ended up with a nickname, 'The Executioner'.

He is granted leave when it is discovered his father has killed his mother and sister, and then committed s*icide. His younger brother is still alive, so the army gives him a post at home, so he can be his guardian.

The Executioner takes this familial loss, a little hard, and promptly sets out to live up to his namesake, methodically taking out the 5 mafioso involved, after acquiring the necessary gear.

The police realise it is him, but aren't that keen to arrest someone doing their job for them.

He boldy applies to join the Mafia, to learn more, telling them he knows who killed their guys, and getting some complimentary servicing, to boot.

The action, and body count, escalates markedly from there. Everybody under the sun is after him, even the military.

Bolan is an intelligent man, but sees the Mafia issue in black and white, they are evil, he is not, it is his job as a man of action to put them down.

One character produces a surprise later on, as well.

A couple of great lines Pendleton throws in, during a mafia conversation :

"Didn't you know?" Turrin grunted. "He's the frackin' Phantom. The frackin' Phantom knows everything."

"I thought that was The Shadow," Plassky mused.

* * *

Later on, Bolan is injured by ignoring Turrin's wife, who shoots him. He stumbles into a woman's home, who, luckily for him, helps him out, and he stays they for a couple of days, recovering. :

"Honestly, that is the most ridiculous outfit. Who do you think you are--Captain Marvel?"

All in all, a fine setup for further adventures.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic of the Genre
This book, whose lead character is still going strong with no end in sight, started a revolution in paperback series publishing.Don Pendleton tapped into the psyche of an America coming to grips with increasedviolence in TV and movies and coupled it with the examination of the Mafiain Mario Puzo's Godfather. He came up with an action thriller thatspawned both copycat Mafia series and a huge assortment of new actionheroes. Basically the story ofone man's vengeance taken to the ultimateextreme, we see Mack Bolan go after the local Mafia in order to avenge thedeath of his family-who ironically were not actually killed by the Mafia. The story of vengeance escalates until Bolan faces the man who heparticularly blames for the deaths and comes away from the confrontationwith a surprising revelation. This is truly an action-adventure classic. ... I am not sure Pendleton was a big football fan. Bolan is going to run a 'power sweep up the middle' to get out of Phoenix.

Pretty powerful, anyway, he kills half a dozen mafiosi or so in the first 3 pages.

In the process he learns of a meeting of all the mafia head honchos
in Miami, and decides that will be a good place to do some hunting.

The mafia are pretty sure he is coming, and put a watch on all the
airports. He sneaks past, though, and has a private plane courier a
package to his first target, with a marksman's medal in it!

Via a disguise and interrogation of a call girl he finds a list of
guys to take out in the first hotel, and does so. Staying too long, he
escapes with the help of a Cuban rebel, who is a bellman.

He runs into Leo Turrin and Brognola at one time, who feed him some
info, helps a cop, and sets up his assault on the 3 bases the mafia
have set up in. They have called in their enforcer family, the
Taliferos, to finally deal with Bolan. Their plan is to group them
together more, rather than leaving them dispersed.

So, The Executioner loads up with high explosive shells and starts
firing! After slaughtering a lot of them, he is under heavy fire and
Talifero attack, but again gains end from his new Cuban rebel friends.

They drop him off at a music festival full of hippies! Peaceniks or
not, topless girls are good for recovering from wounds, it appears. ... Read more
