Chronologically the fourth novel in the Scarlet Pimpernel series (if one counts the two prequels), Sir Percy Leads the Band was first published in 1936. Set in 1793, the novel immediately follows the original Scarlet Pimpernel book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great sequel
This second book in the series contained all the adventure of the first one.It kept me interested throughout, and I rapidly read through it.It was nicely separated into chapters (or smaller book sections) so that the reader knew exactly who was in current need of saving.I liked that part... especially since our favorite hero was of course the one we were all to worry about in the end.Yes, Marguerite was mostly absent from this book, but since it is all set inside France, it made a lot more sense than if our author had radomnly tried to throw her into the happenings.Plus, she was at least mentioned a few times... so not at all entirely forgotten by our hero. I liked the little wrap up in the end since it gave us a quick view into what happened to the minor characters and also a little bit more of Marguerite with her husband.Of course, to me this book told more about about Percy's relationship with his "band" of followers than with other characters.I guess that makes sense, since it is just as the title suggests.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
A priest, a baron, a doctor, a lawyer and the Scarlet Pimpernel walked into a bar. Ok, well, not really, but take those characters and a woman, throw in a love triangle, and you have the basics of this book.

That, and the execution of the king of France. Sir Percy's band has to sneak around in entertaining disguises and extricate most of the above from the problems they have gotten themselves into.

To make matters worse, Chauvelin has become interested.

Fun stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epic Continues
What a great novel!Yes, I have heard criticism that there is less of Marguerite in this book than its predecessor, and that is true. However, I think the story is every bit as good as the original (even without Mrs. Blakeny).I also loved the 2 meanings of the title (and yes, I admit I read it one way until partway through the book, and then the second way dawned on me).
Anyone who loved "The Scarlet Pimpernel" will like this book as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Good
I really adored this book! It's the second one I've read in the Pimpernel series and I finished it in record time.It was so incredibly true to the spirit of The Scarlet Pimpernel. My only complaint would be - no Marguerite. She was very much a background character in this book, only mentioned, but never actually appearing. However, I would still recommend this to any Pimpernel fan! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Super Reader
Again, this is not a full length novel, but a group of shorter works. So the title is apt, as there are indeed several adventures of Sir Percy and the gang to be found in these pages.

A couple of the opening paragraphs are pretty funny:

"You really are impossible, Sir Percy! Here are we ladies raving, simply
raving, about this latest exploit of the gallant Scarlet Pimpernel, and
you do naught but belittle his prowess. Lady Blakeney, I entreat, will
you not add your voice to our chorus of praise, and drown Sir Percy's
scoffing in an ocean of eulogy?"

and

"Oh!" he said, "do not ask me to inculcate hero-worship into this mauvis
sujet. If you ladies cannot convert him to your views, how can I...a
mere man...?"

And His Highness shrugged his shoulders. There were few entertainments
he enjoyed more than seeing his friend Sir Percy Blakeney badgered by
the ladies on the subject of their popular and mysterious hero, the
Scarlet Pimpernel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adventures of the Scarlet Pimpernel
During the year 1792, while the French Revolution is at its peak, a mysterious young Englishman vows to rescue innocent people from their death at the guillotine. Each time he succeeds in sneaking someone out of France, he leaves a note signed with a little flower called the Scarlet Pimpernel. No one can identify this mysterious person, but a French spy has sworn to bring this meddlesome man to his death.Meanwhile, a beautiful, young, French exile, named Marguerite Blakeney marries a tall dull Englishman. The plot thickens as the French spy, Chauvelin, tricks Marguerite into betraying her own husband. But when the Scarlet Pimpernel gets caught in a trap, he always has a daring plan to get out.

I liked the book because it was very exciting and the characters seemed incredibly real. Just when you thought you knew what would happen, the author, Orczy, would change things around. Also, whenever one of the characters was in danger, I was scared for them and had to keep reading until they were out of trouble.Overall, I loved the book and would definitely recommend it to someone else.It was cleverly written and full of intrigue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Percy Rocks!
"Adventures" is a collection of short stories about the exploits of the Pimpernel and his league. They are wonderfully entertaining and Pimpernel addicts will be in heaven! Lots of disguises and narrow escapeshere. I particularly enjoyed "Fie, Sir Percy!" The prince ofdandies falls asleep during a recitation of the pimpernel's adventures, bringing the playful wrath of the ton down on his immaculate head.

5-0 out of 5 stars This adventure will weave a spell around any reader!
This novel is a treasure because of the way that the author protrays the hardships of the nobility during the French Revolution. The book mainly focuses on the Scarlet Pimpernel, his wife, and the villian who is a spyfor France's Republic. The Scarlet Pimpernel, in short, is a rescuer ofthe nobility of France. He and his nineteen comrades take numerous anddaring trips accross the English channel to help unfortunate and innocentpeople escape the clutches of the dreaded guilloutine. His wifeunknowingly places him in danger and then when she realizes that, she risksher life to find him and warn him of the death that awaits him.Read thisnovel and throw yourself into a time that is past where heros exist andlove is everlasting. ... Product Description
Baroness, (Emusca/Emmuska/Emma Magdalena Rosalia Marie Josepha Barbara) Orczy, Mrs Barstow (1865-1947) was a British novelist, playwright and artist of Hungarian origin. She was most notable for her series of novels featuring the Scarlet Pimpernel. Some of her paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. Her parents left Hungary in 1868, fearful of the threat of a peasant revolution. They lived in Budapest, Brussels, and Paris, where Emma studied music without success. Finally, in 1880, the family moved to London where they lodged with their countryman Francis Pichler. In 1903, she and her husband, Montague MaClean Barstow, wrote a play based on one of her short stories about an English aristocrat, Sir Percy Blakeney, Bart., who rescued French aristocrats from the French revolution: The Scarlet Pimpernel. She went on to write over a dozen sequels featuring Sir Percy Blakeney, his family, and the other members of the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, of which the first, I Will Repay (1906), was the most popular. The last Pimpernel book, Mam'zelle Guillotine, was published in 1940. She also wrote popular mystery fiction and many adventure romances. ... Read more

Product Description

Citizen Chauvelin, of the Committee of Public Safety, presents citizen Fouquier-Tinville, the Public Prosecutor, with the most extraordinary claim:

"The dangerous English spy known to the world as the Scarlet Pimpernel," he says, "is now safely under lock and key. He must be transferred to the Abbaye prison forthwith -- and to the guillotine as quickly as might be. No one is to take any risks this time. There must be no question either of discrediting his famous League, or of obtaining other more valuable information out of him. Such methods have proved disastrous!"

There are no safe Englishmen these days, except the dead ones -- and it will not take citizen Fouquier-Tinville much thought or time to frame an indictment against the notorious Scarlet Pimpernel . . . and that will do away with the necessity of a prolonged trial. The revolutionary government is at war with England now, and short work can be made of all poisonous spies!

English novelist and playwright Baroness Emmuska Orczy (1865-1947) achieved enduring success with her novels of politics and intrigue set during the time of the French Revolution. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Different, but just as good
At first I didn't think I would like this book because it had different characters than the other Pimpernel books, but I was surprised. It was very exciting with some great characters and a wonderful plot. It also has a really great ending.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Divine Read for Pimpernel Fans
This is a definite must-read for fans of Orczy and her 'Pimpernel' series. While it's true that it takes place three generations after the famousstories of Sir Percy, this book definitely contains the same level ofintriguing plot-twists and romance. The story, in ways, is similar to theoriginal 'Scarlet Pimpernel,' but different enough to keep a readerinterested and on his/her toes.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Blakeney Family Continues...
Pimpernel and Rosemary may be a disappointment to Baroness Orczy's fans. The plot does not revolve around Sir Percy.Rather, it is about his great-great grandson.Sadly, Peter Blakeney lacks the style and mannerismsof his famous ancestor. The work also lacks luster in terms of plotdevelopment. On the positive side, the piece does have a few interestingromantic moments between Peter and Rosemary. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Spy vs. Spy
The Emperor's Candlesticks was the first book by Baroness Orczy. Written after the birth of her son, it was not a commercial success. It would not receive any attention until after the success of her most famous book, The Scarlet Pimpernel.

In The Emperor's Candlesticks you can see many of the hallmarks of the historical melodrama that she would cultivate in her later books.

When a group of Russian anarchists kidnap a Russian prince in Vienna, a web of mystery is set into motion. When the Cardinal d'Orsay agrees to convey some hollow candlesticks from the Emperor to the Princess Marionoff in Petersburg, two spies both see the possibility of using them to convey messages safely into Russia. One is an eager young idealist involved in the plot against the prince, the other is Madame Demidoff-- a beautiful agent of the Tsar. When the candlesticks go missing at the border, the two engage in a race to get them back, both realizing that their very lives could depend on the retrieval.

Unfortunately, the book is quite uneven in places. Orczy was obviously still learning the trade. It tends to try to fit too much action into some sections and drag in others. Still, it is an interesting little work of historical fiction, and worth reading-- particularly if you are either a fan of Orczy or of the genre. Three and a half stars. ... Read more
