Pennsylvania is home to many classic amusement parks, several of which began operating as early as the late nineteenth century. Some of these parks maintain rides and amusements from their early years, preserving an atmosphere of nostalgia. Others have evolved with new trends in the industry, adding high-tech rides and water parks. This book begins with a concise history of the amusement park, and then surveys the industry in Pennsylvania. A comprehensive guide to 13 parks in the state and a selection of smaller ones, complete with information on rides and attractions, follows. Packed with vintage postcard images and photos. 4-0 out of 5 stars Should Be Titled "History Of Amusement Parks Of Pennsylvania"
When I delved into this book, I really appreciated its history of amusement parks throughout the country, in its first chapter. But then as I read further, in the sections for each individual park, I realized that I'd be getting mainly history for each park. ACE will (tentatively) be holding their annual Coaster Convention in the Pennsylvania parks in 2010 and I bought this book thinking I'd be getting up to date information on each park, such as I do reading DisneyLand or DisneyWorld books, so I was disappointed. But, I must say, as a history book, it is very interesting. Four out of five stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yesteryear and now of Pennsylvania's Parks
Very informative book on the history of many amusement parks in the state of Pennsylvania. Many brought back memories; from all the historic photos. Alot of informative websites and locations are included with lots of information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for PA residents
As most roller coaster enthusiasts know, there are very few books that go beyond pretty full-color photographs and into the history of a particular park. It is even more difficult to find information on parks not owned by major corporations (e.g. Disney, Paramount, Vivendi Universal).

Futrell's book captures the unique history of 13 different amusement parks in Pennsylvania. You are given a rare glimpse into these parks that date back to the origins of the American amusement park industry. Having recently visited Kennywood and Idlewild for the first time, I have realized how much of the charm and atmosphere has faded from the latest generation of parks.

Buy this book before the print run ends! You won't regret it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun reading and focus on PA!
Great new book on amusement parks of PA. This book show theinterest in amusement parks and rides that has been growing ever since the 90's.There is a nice balance between the history of the parks and current conditions. In one book the reader learns a wealth of material about past and now defunct parks (where is the mention of the park that used to be in Mt. Gretna - carousel and all??) as well as information on parks that are up and running. Good summary of each park as well as current information on admission, directions, etc.I was disappointed that there was little emphasis on memorabilia or good trivia. The old photos/postcards really help. That would really help this work out. What about all those great tokens.Even Leap the Dips put our a coaster token to push the coaster. The book is a good read and recommended for the enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars coaster riffic
This book rocks. There was more information than I could possibly imagine. The author is obviously impassioned by his subject--this had to have been a labor of love. And what better muse than the romantic coasters of Pennsylvania. ... Read more

COURAGE WEARS MANY FACES

The Civil War may be over, but for twelve-year-old Will Page, the pain and bitterness haven't ended. How could they have, when the Yankees were responsible for the deaths of everyone in his entire immediate family?

And now Will has to leave his comfortable home in the Shenandoah Valley and live with relatives he has never met, people struggling to eke out a living on their farm in the war-torn Virginia Piedmont. But the worst of it is that Will's uncle Jed had refused to fight for the Confederacy.

At first, Will regards his uncle as a traitor -- or at least a coward. But as they work side by side, Will begins to respect the man. And when he sees his uncle stand up for what he believes in, Will realizes that he must rethink his definition of honor and courage. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The book that made me blind

Vomit, bleed, and go blind is all my eyes were able to experience when reading the book shades of gray, written by Carolyn Reeder. This book focuses on a Virginia boy during the time that happened write after the civil war, he lost his mom, his sisters, his older brother and father (both fought in the war,) and his two slaves who he has come to know and treat like family. He is then forced to live with his uncle, a nice man who didn't participate in the war and to Will (the main character) that makes him a coward, something Will hates. Like you would expect it takes a turn to a ending that everyone knew was coming, Will comes to respect his uncles decision in not fighting in the war.
From a scale of one to ten I would give it a three and a half because the plot is to basic and predictable, the only thing not making me give it a one is because of how much detail and thought the author put into the characters, each one (even the dead ones) came along with back round and feelings. The things that it lacks is a big shock at the end, a dramatic event that happens in the middle that effects the rest of the book, and things along those lines, if were included this book wouldn't have been so bad. In fact, it would be a solid six, but since it doesn't, I can only give it as I said before, a three and a half.
The book is trying to get out how it's okay to be different and do what you like, in this case the uncle didn't fight in the war and is now a coward to everybody, but he believes he did the right thing. The message is good, but the rest of the book isn't, probably the only good line is "who is the coward, the man who backs down from a fight he knows he will win, or the man who makes the challenge he know won't be accepted?" Other then that I did not enjoy the book, and I will not recommend this book to anyone, even a historian.

5-0 out of 5 stars read by 11yo daughter
Part of SonLight homeschool curriculum. My daughter enjoyed reading this. By the comprehension questions I could tell it had some wonderful insights I had never considered. Many times she didn't even wait for the questions to tell me what she read.

4-0 out of 5 stars huge issues at the end of the Civil War taken to a human level
In Virginia at the end of the Civil War, twelve-year-old Will Page is sent to live with his aunt after the deaths of his parents and siblings during the course of the war. Full of anger and bitterness at the Yankees, Will--used to a more comfortable life of little work--must adjust to hardship and hard work. Even more difficult, he must adjust to his uncle who had refused to fight in the war and had dodged the conscriptions, standing up for what he believed in, which Will believes to be cowardly and traitorous. A well-written (with a strong, yet easy young adult vocabulary and an engaging portrait of a young man) sociological and historical portrayal of a difficult time and place in American history, brought to a very human level. Will grows and matures and learns about human behavior (from dealing with a bully to adults dealing with war, to peer pressure at all ages) and the true nature of courage, honor, pride, and forgiveness. The young adult novel works on so many levels. Grade: B+

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Excellent, Historical Book
Well, this is one of my very favorite books concerning America's Civil War!
Actually, it's the fictional story of Will Page after the war ended. He is only 12 years old and had already lost his entire family.

Will goes to live with his closest relatives, an aunt, uncle & cousin, that he doesn't know. Because Will is so upset about the war taking his family, he can't stand the fact that this new family of his didn't even fight in the war to protect the Confederates.

Turning a city boy into a country boy might not be such a bad idea..
Check out this book. It is really worth the read! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst read ever!!
This book isn't really one of the best choices for a war story. It's way too philosophically written and the way it goes from story to story makes it somewhat hard to follow at times. For a war story it is way too drawn out and I can't seem to find a point to the story. It isn't your typical war story, this book is a collection of them put together to form one big story.Unless you're a die hard war book fan, this book may not be you.

1-0 out of 5 stars Naaaah...
This book goes in too many directions and doesn't seem to follow any real basic storyline, which doesn't prove effective for a school project. The stories don't coincide with one another, and the main message is pretty much how horrible war is. It's confusing for the reader, and some of the short stories are a little too drawn out, which makes the book just plain frustrating. The author's descriptive writing style is very intelligent, but much too drawn out for a school read. It wouldn't spark any significant interest unless you're war savvy. Even then, it might still be boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than the literal ....
Tim O'Brien is a talented writer. In The Things They Carried he fictionalizes events that he and the members of his company experienced in Vietnam. The book is a series of short stories that can be read individually or together in any order.More than the items that each man carried in his rucksack or pocket ... the soldiers of Vietnam carried emotions and memories that they will continue to carry for the rest of their lives.

A very moving and real look at the events of Vietnam from the eyes of a soldier .... I strongly recommend this book for those who are serving or those who have loved ones serving in Iraq.

4-0 out of 5 stars They Carried
In the Novel..The Things They Carried.....it talks about, in the first few pages, that the men carried items that reminded them of their loved ones so that they could remember their loved ones while they were out fighting in the war. In novel it shows courage, bravness, and some cowardness as men died and killed people ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Things They Carried
In The Things They Carried, Tim O'Brien recalls his past experiences as a young and innocent soilder. O'Brien also expresses themes if of personal and physical burdens as well as the the theme of isolation.
"They carried the soldier's greatest fear, which was the fear of blushing. Men killed, and died, because they were embarrassed not to. It was what had brought them to the war in the first place, nothing positive, no dreams of glory or honor, just to avoid the blush of dishonor. They died so as not to die of embarrassment." This is one of O'Briens most striking quatations in the novel.
If you want to hear a good war story, I would highly recomend Tim O'Brien's books. They are beautifull written and are availible for everyone to enjoy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Danielle's summary review
The things they carried is a great book by Tim O'Brien. Jimmy cross has a crush on a college girl named Martha, he knows she will never return his love because she majors in English and went to a movie on a single date to see Bonnie and Clyde and he put his hand on her knee and she looked at him and ordered him to pull his hand back. Now cross is in Vietnam and he really misses martha. The things that that they carried in thier packs depended on what kind of constitutions and personalities they had, like marijuana, bug repellant etc.. The stronger men got to carry the guns. Cross was the map keeper and basically had to protect his men. Lavender got shot, but cross didnt really care because he was focused to much on Martha and how much that he missed her. The things they carried is basically and introspective memory story and self-conscious examination of the methods and reasons behind storytelling. The narrator is unreliable; he speaks of the necessity of blurring truth and fiction in a true war story. The settings are during the late 1960's and late 1900's in Vietnam and Massachussets. The major conflict is the men of the Alpha Company, especially Tim O'Brien, grapple with the effects - both immediate and long term - of the vietnam war. Themes are physical and emotional burdens;fear of shame as motivation; the subjection of truth to storytelling.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Things They Carried
This book gives outstanding insight into rhe Vietnam War and the people that served in it.The Things They Carried is a very enjoyable book; after you get through the first 10 or so pages you'll want to read the whole thing.I'm not normally into reading books, but I really liked this book and I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a well told set of stories.Meaning, this book isn't just one story, but instead a set of stories told through the eyes of multiple characters.Regardless of whether you like that in a book or not, READ THIS BOOK! ... Excerpt: In the Lake of the Woods (1994) is a novel by Tim O'Brien, author of Pulitzer Prize-nominated The Things They Carried. An example of O'Brien's recurring Vietnam War theme, In the Lake of the Woods follows the struggle of John Wade to deal with a recently failed campaign for the United States Senate. After moving to Lake of the Woods, Minnesota, John discovers one morning that his wife Kathy is missing. Through the use of flashbacks of John's childhood, college years, and Vietnam experiences, as well as testimony and evidence from affected characters, the novel creatively introduces several hypotheses for the disappearance of Kathy Wade, leaving the decision up to the reader. The main storyline often branches out to flashbacks of significant events in John's past. John's childhood is constantly referred to as the advent of his persona, Sorcerer. As a child John was frequently abused verbally and emotionally by his alcoholic father, whom to other children seemed the perfect father. John often visited Karra's Studio of Magic, but the only item he bought was the Guillotine of Death, purchased by his father. John was devastated after his father's death. John and Kathy met and became intimate during their college years, despite the number of secrets harbored between the two. John spied on Kathy, which she was aware of, just as he was aware of her affair with the dentist. When John was deployed to Vietnam, he and Kathy conversed through letters, some of which frightened Kathy. John became deeply absorbed in his identity as Sorcerer. Charlie Company was involved in a massacre of a village, reminiscent of the real-life My Lai mas...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2661844 ... Read more

Product Description
... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Tim O'Brien (born October 1, 1946 in Minnesota) is an American novelist who mainly writes about his experiences in the Vietnam War and the impact the war had on the American servicemen who fought there. He has held the endowed chair at the MFA program of Texas State University-San Marcos several times, from 2003 to 2004, then from 2005 to 2006, and a third time from 2008 to 2009. He was born in Austin, Minnesota, a city of about 20,000 (a setting which figures prominently in his novels). When O'Brien was twelve, his family, including a younger sister and a brother, moved to Worthington, Minnesota, a place that once billed itself as "the turkey capital of the world." Worthington had a large influence on OBriens imagination and early development as an author. The town is located on Lake Okabena in the western portion of the state and serves as the setting for some of his stories, especially those in the collection titled The Things They Carried. He earned his BA in Political Science from Macalester College in 1968. That same year he was drafted into the Army and was sent to Vietnam, where he served from 1968 to 1970 in 3rd Platoon, A Co., 5th Batt. 46th Inf., as an infantryman. O'Brien's tour of duty was 1969-70. He served in the Americal Division, the division that contained the unit involved in the infamous My Lai Massacre. O'Brien has said that when his unit got to the area around My Lai (referred to as "Pinkville" by the U.S. forces), "we all wondered why the place was so hostile. We did not know there had been a massacre there a year earlier. The news about that only came out later, whil...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=226043 ... Read more

Excerpt: Sir Timothy "Tim" Carew O'Brien, 3rd Baronet was born at Dublin on 5 November 1861 and died at Ramsey, Isle of Man on 9 December 1948. He was an Irish baronet who played cricket for England in five Test matches. A forceful right-handed batsman, O'Brien played in 266 first class cricket matches as an amateur for Oxford University (where he studied at New Inn Hall and won a Blue in 1884) and 1885 and in fairly regular appearances for Middlesex through to 1898. His 92 for Oxford against the 1884 Australians was instrumental in the university's only victory over an Australian team. He played for England against Australia at Old Trafford that year and again four years later at Lord's, but in neither game did his distinguish himself. He toured with MCC teams twice: in 1887-88 he went with George Vernon to Australia and in 1895-96 he went with Lord Hawke's side to South Africa, where he acted as captain once against South Africa at Port Elizabeth in February 1896, winning the game largely as a result of George Lohmann's match return of 15/45 (7/38 and 8/7). In county cricket, he was known for hard hitting innings, with a highest score of 202, scored as part of a partnership with Robert Slade Lucas that put on 338 in 200 minutes. Uniquely, O'Brien captained Ireland as well as England, recording a top score of 167 against his alma mater for the country of his birth during a brief Irish tour of England. This remained an Irish record until 1973. He had 10 children, the eldest of whom, Timothy Jnr., died in Flanders during the First World War. Sir Timothy was, at the time of his death in 1948, the oldest cricketer to have p...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1328604 ... Read more
