I journey onwards and every briar is but a spur to my desire
Edited and Introduced By Simon Reynolds this book is primarily a translation of Novalis's "Hymns to The Night" by James Thomson, with the original German facing its corresponding English rendition. The introduction is a mere 9 pages that elucidates Novalis' relationship to Sophie, the unfulfilled object of desire - idealized for its beauty and virtue - found in the poem. There after Reynolds proceeds to write short entries on the poets of pessimism, namely Thomson himself, Eichendorf, Nokolaus Lenau. Stefan George, Georg Trakl, Giacomo Leopardi, Paul Verlaine, Georges Rodenbach, Ernest Dowson, Lionel Johnson, Ruoert Brooke, and Siegfried Sassoon. None of these essay are particularly insightful beyond an overview of the literary career and psychology of pessimism which is present in their works. Aside from such spare infromation the book offers little in respects the writers discussed, including James Thomson and Novalis. There is a more economical edition of Thomason's translation of Novalis' "Hymns to the Night" which by all means and in every way is preferable. ... Read more
