Product Description
One promoted goat gland transplants as a remedy for lost virility or infertility. Another blamed aluminum cooking utensils for causing cancer. The third was targeted by the Food and Drug Administration as "public enemy number one" for his worthless cures.

John Brinkley, Norman Baker, and Harry Hoxsey were the ultimate snake oil salesmen of the twentieth century. With backgrounds in lowbrow performance—-carnivals, vaudeville, night clubs—-each of these charismatic con men used the emerging power of radio to hawk alternative cures in the Midwest beginning in the roaring twenties, through the Depression era, and into the 1950s. All scorned the medical establishment for avarice while amassing considerable fortunes of their own; and although the American Medical Association castigated them for preying on the ignorant, this book shows that the case against them wasn’t all that simple.

Quacks and Crusaders is an entertaining and revealing look at the connections between fraudulent medicine and populist rhetoric in middle America. Eric Juhnke examines the careers of these three personalities to paint a vision of medicine that championed average Americans, denounced elitism, and affirmed rustic values. All appealed to the common man, winning audiences and patrons in rural America by casting their pitches in everyday language, and their messages proved more potent than their medicines in treating the fears, insecurities, and failing health of their numerous supporters.

Juhnke first examines the career of each man, revealing their flair as businessmen and propagandists-—with such success that Brinkley and Baker ran for governor of their states and Hoxsey had thousands of supporters protest his "persecution" by the FDA. Juhnke then investigates the identity, motives, and willingness to believe of their many patients and followers. He shows how all three men used populist rhetoric-—evangelical, anti-Communist, anti-intellectual—-to attract their clients, and then how their particular brand of populism sometimes mutated to anti-Semitism and other sentiments of the radical right.

By treating the incurable, Brinkley, Baker, and Hoxsey took on the mantles of common folk crusaders. Brinkley was idolized for his goat gland cures until his death, and Hoxsey’s former head nurse continued his work from Tijuana until her death in 1999. In considering who visits quacks and why, Juhnke has shed new light not only on the ongoing battle between alternative and organized medicine, but also on the persistence of quackery-—and gullibility—-in American culture. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SHOCKING!!
This book is all the more shocking when you realize that RIGHT NOW the taxpayer, thanks to credulous politicians like Senator Tom Harkin and Congressman Dan Burton and others, is being made to pay for "medical care" that is every bit as crazy as the things in this book.Someday someone will write a book like this but it will be about *present-day* nonsense, including a National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (the only center in the NIH oriented around the needs of practitioners - CAM practitioners in this case - as opposed to the needs of patients) that pays for psychic power therapy, a White House Commission on CAM headed by a former devotee of the Bhagwan guru whose group launched a biological attack in Oregon, and on and on ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Bilking the Credulous
We have had a boom in interest in "alternative health care" recently, but that interest has been with us ever since there has been a medical establishment to which there could be "alternatives."In the American Midwest in the 1930s three alternative healers began a rise to financial, social, and political power._Quacks & Crusaders: The Fabulous Careers of John Brinkley, Norman Baker, and Harry Hoxsey_ (University Press of Kansas) by Eric S. Juhnke documents the rise and fall of all three medical conmen, and gives a lesson in the dangers of credulousness.

John Brinkley was a licensed doctor, having graduated from a diploma mill.He latched on to the "gland transplant" experiments done on animals, and believed that transplanting animal glands into humans was a key for rejuvenation."A man is as old as his glands, and his glands are as old as his sex glands," he proclaimed.Male goats were the randiest animals, so they were the tissue donors, but they turned out to be just the thing to boost female fertility and development of the bust, too.He compared himself to Jesus, gave sermons, and demonized the American Medical Association.Norman Baker specialized in cancer cures. He worked as a machinist and in vaudeville before settling down in Muscatine, Iowa.He persuaded city officials to let him start a radio station that would present honest-to-goodness down home programs as opposed to the high-brow fare coming from the cities.Baker called Morris Fishbein, the head of the AMA, the "Jewish dominator of the medical trust of America," and insisted that his clinic was a bastion for personal freedom and against the evils of urban industrialism.Harry Hoxsey proved to have the most staying power. He specialized in herbal cancer cures as well. Not a physician, he was able to enroll renegade physicians into his service, and he was bankrolled by an evangelist minister. In Dallas, he enjoyed poker, nightclubs, and womanizing, and his diatribes against interference by the AMA and the government won him friends from the political right wing.

Juhnke's tales of these colorful characters are great fun to read, even though the rascals bilked many of their patients of money and sometimes their lives. The eventual success of the AMA against them is not a pure victory; the shortcomings of the AMA at the time are examined here, too.Few people remember these quacks now.The towns that boosted them because they brought in business now view them as an embarrassing part of their histories. It is important that Juhnke has brought them again to our attention. We may no longer have such manifestations as goat gland transplants, but anyone who watches television knows that herbal cures, homeopathy, and healing magnets are still taking money from the gullible. There is still a large group of potential patients who view organized medicine (and governmental regulation of medical treatment) as some sort of conspiracy, and of course there are plenty of faith healers who are glad to have their flocks doubting the efficacyof regular medical treatment.People are finding it harder to pay for physicians, and drug costs are up.Brinkley, Baker, and Hoxsey may have eventually lost their power and their millions, but Juhnke's useful study reminds us that there are always healers ready to take their place. ... Product Description
The maritime ubarate of Cos, with her allies, is mounting an attack on Ar on two fronts, from the south with a major invasion force and in the north with an expeditionary force besieging Ar's Station, Ar's base of power in the vast arable basin of Gor's mightiest river, the Vosk. Dietrich of Tarnburg, a mercenary, has seized Torcodino in the south, with its stores of military supplies, to temporarily halt the march of Cos on Ar, to buy Ar time to organize for her defense. Cabot has delivered letters from Dietrich to the regent of Ar, Gnieus Lelius, apprising him of the city's danger and the situation at Torcodino, and he has, in turn, been entrusted with letters from the regent to be delivered to the besieged Ar's Station. In virtue of treason in Ar, her main forces have been drawn away from the city and are now are wintering at Holmesk. Thus Ar is substantially defenseless and Ar's Station is abandoned. At Ar's Station Cabot, betrayed by the very missives he conveyed, is arrested as a spy. In the destruction wrought in Ar's Station by siege engines Cabot escapes his imprisonment. Shall he then flee Ar's Station, making his way to freedom through its miseries and desolations, its ruins and flames, or shall he remain, to defend, as he can, to the death, if need be, her weakened, betrayed, starving defenders, those who had been his very captors? 5-0 out of 5 stars I will always believe you if you will always believe me
My son's kindergarten teacher just read us (the parents) this book on Parent's Orientation night. The book is about a boy who is always late because of fantastic experiences that hold him up on his way to school - crocodiles, lions, tidal waves. The teacher doesn't believe him (who would?) and punishes him for being late. One day, nothing happens on the way to school and he is not late. But now it is the teacher who has a fantastic experience - being strung up by a gorilla and asking for the boy to help him.The boy doesn't believe the teacher and goes away without helping him.

The point, for me, is about preserving the wonderful imaginations of our young children. To quash those imaginations in favor of a more grown-up (and realistic) view of life and responsibilities is a great disservice not only to them but to us, the teachers. And the illustration of the boy walking to school on the day when nothing fantastic happens is positively dreary and heartbreaking. To insist on grown-up pragmatism at the cost of childhood imagination ends up being a lose-lose outcome.

Although children love the story, this is really a children's book that is a lesson to parents, rather than children. Our son's new kindergarten teacher read it to us that way. Then she said that she tells our children this: I promise to always believe you as long as you always believe me too.And in this way we will build trust in each other together.

I often find myself trying to get out the door with my kids when one of them suddenly discovers an alligator in the bathroom. I am working on taking the time to believe in their alligator.

5-0 out of 5 stars A zany story of timeliness
John Burningham's JOHN PATRICK NORMAN MCHENNESSY - THE BOY WHO WAS ALWAYS LATE tells of a boy who can't seem to get to school on time. His teacher doesn't believe his imaginative stories and punishes him - until the time John gets to school on time and finds something strange has happened to his teacher. A zany story of timeliness with a twist makes for a fun tale out of the ordinary.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Long Time Favorite
This book tickles me!I am a teacher and have read it so many times to students that I have to get another copy.Kids really love this story. It is a little bit of a surprise to them when the teacher tells John that if he keeps telling lies he might hit him with his stick, but he doesn't ever get hit so it just serves to grab the kids' attention. The book isn't explicit because you can see the things that could never happen, "happening" but maybe it is the boy's imagination.Since you never know for sure it is a great book to talk about how different people can interpret books in different ways depending on their experiences or mindset. You could even have kids present the evidence that made them think the things really did or really didn't happen.Awesome book!

5-0 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite children's book
As a child, my dad read this book to me almost every night.I loved the illustrations and the story. And it taught me the important lesson that children are sometimes much more intelligent and insightful than adults.Maybe some would consider the next lesson to be anything but a lesson, but as a child, this book taught me to question authority and to have faith in my own judgment.I think that is the most important lesson this book teaches children.

5-0 out of 5 stars great for school children
I'm not sure if preschoolers would get this, but primary grade children enjoy this story where the child triumphs over the teacher in the end!Even groups who are restless find the humor in this situation! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Men Enslaved By Women For A Change!
The main difference between this trilogy of books and all the others is the protagonist is a male who has been brought to gor specifically to be enslaved by women. As a fighting slave, Jason Marshall must adapt to the rigors of Gor while finding himself in extreme bondage. I kept seeing the analogy between Jason's situation and a great man from real life named Frederick Douglass. Both men strove to escape their bondage and eventually succeeded in gaining their freedom through hard work, tenacity and a little luck.

Fighting Slave of Gor has little actual fighting, but does set the tone for the other books in this mini-series. For the first time we are shown the dynamics of the slave-trade as it regards to male slaves. Seeing men under the subjugation of superior women is great to see for a change. I would reccomend this book to anyone wanting to read Gor for the first time-especially women.

Jason Marshall is the hero for the average guy. Watch him as he goes from geek to sheik, from chump to champ (Literally) and finally overcomes his bondage while gaining his freedom. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Earth men are wimps
In "Fighting Slave," John Norman pushes his theory that men of Earth have lost our manliness and succumbed to feminist domination.Earth women, he says, are "persons" rather than women.Earth men, are wimps who accept the domination of non-women dressed in pants.Norman uses the characters of an earth man and earth woman who are both captured and taken to Gor.The earth man becomes a "silk slave" for one of Gor's free woman but over time he learns do be dominant and manly.Eventually he turns the tables and makes a pleasure slave out of his mistress owner. As usual, earth women, are natural slaves, entirely satisfied when they have a strong man taking charge of their lives. Norman uses it to contrast with the unhappy women of earth who never know what they really want and have no strong dominant man willing to take charge of them.

The conversations about slavery weren't as tedious as some other of the Gor novels, although there isn't much for action and adventure. It was a pleasant afternoon's read with some real wisdom about the human condition which we could all learn from.

1-0 out of 5 stars Slave Boy of Gor
The 14th Gor novel is the first in the Jason Marshall trilogy and like Captive of Gor and Slave Girl of Gor this one is pretty much for the bondage crowd. The perspective is from the viewpoint of a male slave; hence the title of the review. The story begins with 25 year old Jason in a cafe on Earth talking to Beverley Henderson, a classmate he is attracted to but has never dated. After a long and laughably unrealistic conversation about gender relationships, they go outside and are promptly kidnapped to Gor, parted, and enslaved. Jason finds himself the silk slave (i.e., boy toy) of the Lady Florence of Vonda, a city of the Salerian Confederation. After he has been defiled by Lady Melpomene, Lady Florence's archenemy, however, he is demoted to stable slave and makes a name for himself in the "stable bouts"; hence the title of the book. Despite the title it has very little fighting or action of any kind even after war breaks out between the Salerian Confederation and the city-state of Ar. Furthermore, the writing is self-indulgent to a fault. In one scene Jason is dragging a female prisoner behind him down a pitch black tunnel trying to escape from 4 trained warriors of Ar armed with swords. Jason also has a sword but no training with it and is aware that he has no chance whatsoever against them. Even though he can hear the soldiers searching for them, he nevertheless throws her to the ground and rapes her, no doubt to demonstrate his dominance and full Gorean "manhood" since they had had copious sex just prior to the escape scene. (It took Tarl Cabot 8 volumes to achieve this---it's not until he overcomes his paralytic conversion reaction in the opening chapter of Volume 9, Marauders of Gor, that he is fully Gorean---but Jason does it in less than one!) This scene is utterly unrealistic, utterly gratuitous, and utterly ridiculous. I understand that in his other career John Norman was a professor of philosophy at a New York college. I shouldn't have to tell him that in the hierarchy of human drives survival comes before sex and dominance.

5-0 out of 5 stars The GOR Saga (25 novels by John Norman)
I loved this one! It's what a Norman fan expects.Yes, I own and have read all 25 books of John Norman's GOR Saga and would love to read 25 more. John Norman is an extraordinary writer. So what if he makes slaves out of women. Hey! This is fiction, it hapens in GOR which is at the other side of the Sun and should not affect our planet. However, his books are controversial for those who would like to enslave the minds of everyone. They are anathema for those folks out there who can determine what we can, should, and want to read. Well, too bad. I always have read whatever I want and, if I don't like it, I will not read it. Isn't that the healthy way to be? Why should a well-intentioned person forbid a book to the rest of the country is something beyond my understanding. I guess those sick friends of systematic censorship believe they are God. Certainly they don't believe in the First Amendment to the Constitution. Well, they are not gods. Just very disturbed people and should be confined to special institutions. Rebel, readers! Buy John Norman books and demand that they are reprinted! Besides that, overlooking Norman's obsession with enlaving females, his books are extraordinary. How many authors have you read that depict a whole planet, including inhabitants, flora and fauna, plus language, traditions, etc. in such a way that it's believable? I know of only one: John Norman.

Product Description
The closest we've ever come to the end of the world

"DEFCON-2 is the best single volume on the Cuban Missile Crisis published and is an important contribution to the history of the Cold War. Beyond the military and political facts of the crisis, Polmar and Gresham sketch the personalities that created and coped with the crisis. They also show us how close we came to the edge without becoming sensationalistic."
—Larry Bond, bestselling author of Dangerous Ground

Spy-satellite and aerial-reconnaissance photos reveal that one of the United States's bitterest enemies may be acquiring weapons of mass destruction and the means to use them against the American homeland. Administration officials refuse to accept intelligence professionals' interpretation of these images and order an end to spy missions over the offending nation. More than a month later, after vicious infighting, the president orders the spy missions to resume. The new photos reveal an array of ballistic missiles, capable of carrying nuclear warheads and striking deep within U.S. territory. It appears that the missiles will be fully operational within one week.

This is not a plot setup for a suspense novel; it is the true story of the most terrifying moment in the 45-year Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union: the Cuban Missile Crisis. DEFCON-2 tells this tale as it has never been told before—from both sides, with the help of hundreds of recently declassified U.S. and Soviet documents, as well as interviews with numerous former spies, military figures, and government officials who speak out here for the first time. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars How Close to Nuclear War??
The story of the Cuban Missile Crisis has been told in several other books, but DEFCON-2 is the first I've seen that tells the story with warts and all.Yes, the Kennedy Administration stood up to the Soviets, but was forced to do so primarily due to poor intelligence gathering and analysis. In addition, many of the decisions Kennedy and his ExComm team made once the crisis was upon them were, in hindsight, extremely frightening considering how little they knew about what was going on in Cuba. For example, while the US knew about the strategic nuclear weapons in Cuba, they knew nothing of the tactical (battlefield) nukes the Soviets had deployed there.Nor did the US know the Soviets had, at least initially, delegated the decision authority to use those tactical nukes to their senior officer on the island in the event of a US invasion.Had the US invaded, there is every indication the Soviets would have used their tactical nukes both against invading ground forces and USN ships supporting the invasion.World War III??

The authors did a fine job of developing the "characters" in the story, men whose names I remember from childhood, including John and Robert Kennedy, McNamara, Rusk, LeMay, DeGaulle, and of course, Khrushchev. Perhaps the two most intriguing figures in the drama were Vice President Johnson, who was all but excluded purposely by the Kennedys, and SAC commander Gen Thomas Power, who angered President Kennedy with his unilateral, and provocative, actions.Surprisingly, French President DeGaulle fully supported Kennedy and the US, despite friction between the two nations over France's policies in Algeria at the time.

One of the more interesting "sideshow" events covered in the book was that of a US U-2 spy plane that flew off course and into Soviet (Siberian) airspace during the crisis.Soviet MiG-19s were scrambled to intercept the U-2, and the USAF scrambled F-102 interceptors to protect/escort the U-2 back to Alaska. The F-102s were armed with nuclear air-to-air (Falcon) missiles, and had a fight with the MiGs ensued, the US would have been the first to go nuclear.Thankfully, the MiGs headed home before encountering the F-102s, and the U-2 made it back to Alaska, but just barely.

The only thing preventing me from rating this as a 5-star publication is the editing, or perhaps more accurately, the lack there of.The authors have a great story to tell, but the deeper into the book you go, the more they tend to revisit events they'd previously covered.Still, all in all, a fine book backed by an impressive degree of research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Th Cuban Missle crisis
The two authors expertly present all of the details of the 1962 misle crisis within Cuba tht almost prompted a nuclear war with the United States. This bok is very well written. I found it compelling all the way thru and rally could not put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Story of "The Missiles of October"
For thirteen days in October 1962, the world teetered on the brink of nuclear war. The two global superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, brought their nuclear arsenals of missile-armed submarines, long-range strategic bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles to an unprecedented condition of war readiness. In the U.S., the armed forces' hair-trigger alert level was called "Defense Condition 2," or "DEFCON-2." The world held its breath as all eyes turned to the small island nation of Cuba, just 90 miles from Florida.

DEFCON-2 tells the story of the "Cuban Missile Crisis." It began in the fall of 1962. Frustrated and threatened by American missiles based in Europe, and seeking both a military and political foothold in the Western Hemisphere, Soviet Premier Nikita S. Khrushchev decided to establish SS-4 medium-range and SS-5 intermediate-range nuclear-armed ballistic missile bases in Fidel Castro's Cuba. The clandestine operation was called "Anadyr." It did not remain secret for long. On October 14, an American U-2 spy plane flew a routine high-altitude reconnaissance mission over the Communist island. Intelligence analysts who later examined the photographs from the mission detected the construction of the missile bases. They raised the alarm, and within hours the crisis was on. Before it ended two weeks later, the U.S. and USSR came closer to waging nuclear war on each other than at any other time during the Cold War. The eventual peaceful resolution of the crisis was inarguably U.S. President John F. Kennedy's finest hour, a time in which he and his closest political and military advisors "really earned their paychecks."

There have been many other books about the Cuban Missile Crisis, but none have been as thoroughly researched, detailed and readable as "DEFCON-2." One of the advantages that historians and authors have today is that they can draw on literally thousands of documents that the former USSR has released from the KGB's most secret vaults. These documents reveal the Soviet side of past global events that, for Western researchers, had previously been shrouded in mystery and subject to conjecture. The U.S., albeit at a slow pace and with considerable resistance in some cases, also continues to declassify formerly secret documents. DEFCON-2 authors Norman Polmar and John D. Gresham took full advantage of such sources to construct the most comprehensive history yet of the Kennedy-Khrushchev game of "brinksmanship" that could have ended civilization as we know it. One of the facts that the authors reveal is that we were MUCH closer to nuclear war than previously thought.

With several useful appendices, 40 pages of chapter footnotes and an extensive bibliography, DEFCON-2 can serve as a stand-alone single-volume reference or as an excellent starting point for further research. I highly recommend it for students of the Cold War, for anyone who sweated through the crisis or for anyone who wants to learn a lesson from history.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, but repetitive.
Pros: very detailed account of the crisis and gives a good brief overview of the cold war (before and after).Well documented sources and factual data including military units, policies, weapons, maps & charts.

Cons: disorganized timeline and repetitive information throughout the book made it boring to read.

In my opinion, the book would have been much better served if the chapters had been laid out in a daily timeline. The authors wrote chapters that describe in detail certain aspects if the crisis. The problem is that each chapter seems to tell the story of the crisis from the beginning. The further you get through the book, it's as if your rereading it for the third of fourth time.I went from eagerly wanting to read it to dreading to start the next chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Particularly appropriate these days
As a second-grader during the Cuban Missile Crisis, I remember President Kennedy's address on TV, the black-and-white photos of the missiles sites, the talk of the quarantine line. Reading DEFCON-2 brought back a rush of memories.

Perhaps one of the most enlightening aspects of the book was the background on Nikita Khruyshev. The bogeyman of my childhood has been redeemed; his was perhaps the coolest, wisest head during a nightmare.

Product Description
For decades the creator of Gor has been writing short pieces and quietly putting them in a drawer. But at last he is ready to go public with them in this  wide-ranging story collection. It includes a number of  pieces with such Gorean theme as female slavery and submission.

Many of the stories are philosophical monologues exploring existential and phenomenal ideas and their relation to the real world, abstract dialogues, ruminations and speculations. Some could almost be lectures embodied in narrative form.

Some stories are science fiction, some horror, and some have "mainstream" settings. Among the characters you'll meet are talking frogs, a couple of independently thinking computers, and a host of philosophers, clinical psychologists and psychiatrists performing analysis on computers or intelligent alien lifeforms and even counseling them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Modern Hymnal.
As with any new hymnals, adding more current songs requires removing old favorites. Also, some hymns may be missing a verse in this hymnal, while others have an additional verse. But this features several songs by one of my favorite modern hymn writers, the late John W. Peterson. ... Read more

My son (13) and I went on a dinosaur dig this last summer.I asked the a professor and some of the regulars on the dig what they would recommend as a book for my son. They all agreed that this was one of the best.It also helped identifying some of the bones we were finding!I really hope theyreprint and update this book with the new information that is available, it is a real treasure.

4-0 out of 5 stars amazing
It is a shame that this book is not available now. Although it was written in 1988 and thus it is not up-to-date with the discoveries of the past 12 years this book is still an amazing read. What is written in it is stillvalid and gives readers a fascinating visual tour of the long-disappearedworld. I hope there will be a reprint and maybe also an addendum focusingon new discoveries.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not for those older than 4.5 billion years old
If you are looking for dinosaurs, dinosaurs, and more dinosaurs, this is the place to look. This book has the most important information about well known dinosaurs including T-Rex and Velociraptor, to minors such asStenonychosaurus and Opisthocoelicaudia, accompanied by lovely drawings andpainting by leading Paloeillustrator John Sibbick with a smattering of thehistory of Paleontology, it's innovators and their theories.A goodreference for the professional as well as the beginner.Highly Recommended ... Product Description
Jeremy Johns' unique study is the first comprehensive account of the Arabic administration of Norman Sicily. While it is generally assumed that the Normans inherited their administration from the Muslim governors of the island, Johns demonstrates that the Norman kings actually restructured their administration to the model of Fatimid Egypt. Controversially, he suggests that their intention was not administrative efficiency, but the projection of their royal image. This accessible account of the Norman rulers reveals how they related to their counterparts in the Muslim Mediterranean. ... Read more

Product Description
"Questions are posed," writes Norman Mailer, "in the hope they will open into richer insights, which in turn will bring forth sharper questions." In this series of conversations, John Buffalo Mailer, 27, poses a series of questions to his father, challenging the reflections and insights of the man who has dominated and defined much of American letters for the past sixty years.

Their wide-ranging discussions take place over the course of a year, beginning in July 2004. Set against the backdrop of George W. Bush’s re-election campaign and the war in Iraq, each considers what it means to live in America today. John asks his father to look back to World War II, and explore the parallels that can—and cannot—be drawn between that time and our current post-9/11 consciousness.

As their conversations develop, the topics shift from the political to the personal to the political again, as they duck and weave around one another. They explore their shared admiration of boxing and poker, the nature of marriage and love, television, movies, writing, and what it means to be a part of this extraordinary family. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars bo
coming from a math/physics , obviously non-literary , background i was looking
for a nice overview of mailer's work.

unfortunatley, this is simply a series of conversations in the present ( circa2004) with his much younger son.includes a tremendous amount of anti-republican and
pro-democrat harping.even if you agree with him, it seems to wear thing pretty quickly.certainly mr mailer has more important and meaningful
work to display in a collection.

not much meat , or even potatoes, here

5-0 out of 5 stars Twisted, Funky, Funny, Brilliant...
Mailer always manages to twist in a corkscrew of unexpected words and pop the BS cork off of a rich wine of pungent insight. Lots of fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps one of our few chances left...
Growing up in the sixties, I guess I took Norman Mailer for granted.
Boy, I'll never do that, again.
After all, there was a time when people like Mailer, Joan Didion and her husband, John Gregory Dunne, actually had a regular column, each month, in places like Esquire magazine. And, people such as myself could count on brilliant, independent minds, capable of executing a great novel, providing periodic commentary on the times we were living in (through?). And, the books they wrote were still events: much read, much discussed, and looking back, they were actually what kept us, sane- at least those of us for whom sanity was a virtue.
But, tragically, those days are officially gone.
We now have any number of empty, babbling, pundits; essentially employees of General Electric, Westinghouse, Disney, News Corp and/or TimeWarner, whom we allow to define the day's agenda. What's left of the "culture", is divided up among television, movies, the Internet, and radio... probably in that order.
We actually have nothing left that can be referred to, with any seriousness, as a "culture". We just have different corporate entities using different means of entertainment with which they focus our attention on anything other than what it mean to be "alive" or truly "human". It's a very extraordinary, and extraordinarly dangerous period of history to be living in.
I remember someone on some talk show way back in the early 70's saying that "we're the last ones [that generation, not this] who will remember what it was "like".
Well, here is someone who not only remembers what it was like, but can still, at the age of 83, compare "it" to how it is now, and leave one grateful, shell-shocked, aching for a change of guard, and thanking one's lucky stars for the privilege.
Plus, apart from the conversation bewteen Mailer and his son, there is also an essay inserted right in the middle of the book which alone is worth the price. It is called "Myth Versus Hypothesis", and despite the pretentious title, it is one of the best pieces of political writing I've ever seen in my life. It was apparently delivered as the Keynote Address during Harvard's Commencement Ceremony in 2004. I have not been able to find it anywhere on the Internet, so I do not believe it was ever published elsewhere. I challenge anyone to produce anything comparable, which has appeared in recent years in any magazine, newspaper, etc.
Mailer has lived and learned quite a bit in his time. And I can not exaggerate the value of this gem for those of us who can still appreciate the "Real McCoy", or for those who who would genuinely like to briefly step out of their "Orgasmatron" and actually visit what was once the late, great planet Earth.
I once read that the great French novelist and mystic Romain Rolland carried a copy of Goethe's "Faust" with him at all times ("my constant companion") for his entire adult life. I'm not comparing this book to "Faust", or Mailer to Goethe, or suggesting to anyone that they do the same with it. But, I did recall that statement of Rolland's while reading "The Big Empty". Because it reminded me of how there a just a few rare indivifuals in any epoch that can really help make their age TRULY intelligible to their fellow travellors.
Norman Mailer proves that here... in spades.

1-0 out of 5 stars Misleading or cheating?
I was looking for the textbook. The Amazon site lists "hardcover" and "paperback" versions. The paperback version is significantly less expensive. So I ordered the paperback version. It turned out that this "paperback" version is actually not the textbook itself, but the workbook for the textbook. Yet on the Amazon website, it is simply listed as "paperback" together with "hardcover" version. This is misleading at best and cheating in reality. The Amazon site should specifically indicate that this is the workbook, not the textbook.

Product Description
Vesalius's De humani corporis fabrica libri septem, first published in 1543, is, along with William Harvey's classic work from 1628 on the discovery of the circulation of the blood, one of the two most famous books in the history of medicine. A cornerstone of the scientific revolution, published the same year as Copernicus's monumental treatise on the heliocentric universe, De humani corporis fabrica inaugurated the modern study of anatomy, leading to the eventual overturn of the Galenic system that had dominated medical science for fourteen centuries. Illustrated with woodcuts by artists in the school of Titian that have for centuries remained standard icons of medical literature, Vesalius's work is also a classic of sixteenth-century graphic art.
When it was originally published in the mid-sixteenth century, the Fabrica's Latin text guaranteed its accessibility to an international medical and scientific audience, all of whom had been educated to read and write Latin. Fewer and fewer physicians and scientists read Latin today, however, and even professional classicists have reported considerable difficulty in deciphering Vesalius' technical Renaissance medical Latin. Although many editions, revisions, adaptations, and facsimiles of Vesalius's Fabrica were published over the centuries, before now the work had never been translated, except for fragments, into a modern language other than Russian (Moscow, 1950 1954). The Richardson and Carman translation supplies a modern, accessible version of this monumental work, which will remain a lasting contribution to our knowledge of the history of Renaissance medicine and science. Readers will be impressed by the quality of the detailed anatomy and may be surprised by the grandeur and elegance of Vesalius's literary style as rendered by the translators.
The fourth volume in Richardson and Carman's award-winning translation contains the fifth book of Vesalius's Fabrica: Book V, The Organs of Nutrition and Generation. The book contains 19 chapters describing the organs of nutrition and generation, illustrated with 31 woodcuts reproduced at or near original size. The final chapter contains Vesalius's detailed instructions for performing an abdominal dissection. The chapters end with detailed translator s notes explaining subtleties in the translation. There are also indexes to the text, to people and places, to words from Arabic, Greek and Latin, and to the translator' notes. A preface by Dr. Carman provides details about the anatomy described therein.
The lasting influences of both Vesalius's many discoveries and the dramatic woodcuts on the history of anatomy and the visual arts cannot be overestimated. As Dr. Richardson stated in his preface to Book II, The reader cannot but admire Vesalius's attention to detail, his astounding memory, his powers of observation and description, and his capacity for sheer hard work.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "John Norman," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have John Norman in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with John Norman when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name John Norman, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
