Excerpt: Sebastian John Ross, (April 25, 1919 - August 24, 2008), known as S. John Ross or "The Silhouete Man", was an American-born Australian artist and showman, famous for his miniature silhouette portraits cut in black card. S. John Ross became a well-known identity at the annual shows such as the Sydney Royal Easter Show and the Brisbane Ekka where he worked each year for about 60 years. He was regarded within his own lifetime as "a legend". Arriving in Australia in 1942 as a U.S. Serviceman, S. John Ross married an Australian woman, Phyllis Counsell, and later migrated from the United States to live in Australia. He worked until the age of 89, and in that time created thousands of portraits, including those of many celebrities. He claimed that only the Taxation Office knew what the "S" in his name stood for. Ross Eastgate, military historian and journalist, said of S. John Ross, "He was not tall in stature, but he was giant in Australian entertainment." S. John Ross was born Sebastian John Ross, in Detroit, USA, April 25 1919. Inspired by an artist that he saw at Michigan State Fair, he trained with the silhouette artist Budd-Jack, travelling around to different fairs for three years. He later worked in Hollywood. During World War II, Ross served in the Philippines. He then came to Australia and served at Base Section 7 in Sydney, and as Staff Sergeant managed the US driving pool, driving entertainment celebrities such as Bob Hope and Jack Benny. In his search for good drivers, he employed a number of Australian women in the WAAAF, thus meeting Florence Phyllis Counsell, (known as Phyllis). They married in February 1945. After the war, Ross returned...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=20023937 ... Read more

Product Description
Though it gives an account of his entire career, this book focuses on the works of Ben Nicholson's artistic maturity - the drawings and painted reliefs made between 1950 and 1975. Together with the white reliefs of 1934-9, these are the works by which he himself wished to be judged. Despite this fact, neither the drawings nor late reliefs have received the attention they deserve. The drawings have mistakenly been viewed as somehow subsidiary to the paintings and reliefs, when in fact their qualities of wit, poetry, spontaneity and virtuosity place them among Nicolson's finest and most personal achievements, while the late reliefs are shown to be complementary expressions of the interiorized vision that underlies all Nicholson's work. As his imagination ranges from the particular to the universal, the two-dimensional image explores one facet of reality, the three-dimensional object another. The 120 illustrations include a large number of works rarely or never reproduced before, and much of the extensive quotation from Nicholson's own writing has not previously been published. The author's fresh approach and sympathetic insight make us look more deeply and with wider appreciation at the work of an outstanding artist. ... The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.

Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Books on science and technology, agriculture, military technology, natural philosophy, even cookbooks, are all contained here.
