More a collection of sayings than a book
It should be cheaper as its really just a single slogane or saying per page. Its entertaining enough but short. Would have been better to have been free as an advertisement to promote the Destroyer Series. As it is there's nothing original here. You could read the whole thing in 10 minutes in a bookstore and save all the money.

Great Entertainment
Any fan of Warren Murphy's The Destoryer series should either find a used copy of the paperback or pick up this Graphic Audio CD.

Dr. Smith pops his cyanide pill because of an attack of Folcroft. Remo has a vision of his mother, who tells him his father needs his help. Amidst the chaos, Sam Beasley (an evil character who seems to be the anti-Walt Disney) is freed.

This book ties in great with The Destroyer # 100 - Last Rites and The Destroyer # 102 - Unite and Conquer (Graphic Audio: the Destroyer). I'd suggest getting all three sets and listening to them in order (Identity Crisis, Last Rites, then Unite and Conquer).

Highly recommended.

Should have stuck with the stoey line.

deeper than you think
the second part of the grandmaster is really a great book
its good fun to readexcitement and with a deeper spiritual meaning great stuff

nonetheless a weird and bizarre cold war spy thriller. never before writers focused on cold war would have dreamed up such weird one with black magic, hocus pocus, mumbo jumbo crap like 'grandmaster' and 'highpriest', but since remo williams, a cop who could be turned into a super natural killing machine battling evil forces, everything was possible to this no-hold-bar co-author couple. it's so weird to read these two books, making robert ludlum's tough heros lamers. the writing, plot, scenario, dialogue, structure, texture of these two books are all good, but still, i got a feeling of like reading ludlum co-authored with stephen king and some other fantasy writers. so weird and so good.

Destoyer Fan
I can not explain what I like about this series.I have been reading it since 1977.I have every copy.The adventure of the characters and the interaction between them is done very well.The humor the author(s) put into his work is great.This is number 145 and I hope it will continue.
The four words that start Chapter two in every book except one are, "His name was Remo."This is easy reading with adventure and current events tied in over the years.These are all fiction but a few have really be far fetched.Get a good and see if you like this type of writing.

lacking somehow
I thought that this was a decent continuation of the series but it seemed to me that the author spent too much time letting the villan get away form the main characters than he deserved

Dragon Bones Destroyer
Very good, typical story and good use of Sinanju history. I wish listings of this series titles included the number of the book. I have bought one I already had three times.

Write in haste, repent at leisure.
This book has a few merits. It does advance several of the earlier Destroyer novels' plot lines. It does contain some humorous scenes. It is unfortunately marred by poor editing (frequent spelling errors, some sentences that are unfathomable). The novel's tone throughout is that of a hurried effort.

I can still recommend it to those who have followed the series from the beginning, but, it would not be a good introduction for a first time reader. ... Read more

It was awesome
I bought it because I was a fan of the movie, but the book is even better.I look forward to reading the whole series!

Good but a little short.
This is a good novella for anyone who likes action books and was a fan of the movie Remo Williams, The Adventure Begins. This is one case where the movie outshined the source material. I know this is the first book of a large series, but I expected more. You don't really learn too much about the Shinanju training or about Chiun. I did like the plot of him going after the mob as opposed to the government contracter in the movie. The interraction between Remo and Chiun was better in the movie. The biggest off put is the price. $13 and change plus shipping is a lot to pay for a book that does not break 200 pages. Hey E-reads, bundle 3 together for that price or drop the price to 5 or 6 dollars. That would make the purchase worth it. Anyways, I have the next two in the series and hope they get better. I still reccomend this book, but get it used or when they drop the price.

Satire, Humor & Action
I purchased this book in the early 70's and have been hooked ever since. There is much satire in the series along with much humor. However, the main focus is Remo learning from Chium to become the next Master of Sinanju as well as saving the US and other countries as well. The series is - overall - very well written. The relationship between Remo and Chiun is fascinating. This series, which has about 150 stories now, is perhaps my favorite along with the Perry Rhodan series.

Super Reader
A cop that has gone a little off the rails ends up killing a perp. He gets severely shafted and executed for it. Only not quite, this is used as a cover to train a secret agent, basically, in all sorts of things, including superhuman karate, and point him at the 'bad guys'.

The first of whom are a well established bunch of mafioso.

Hero as vigilante who kills with his bare hands, in other words.

Its a beginning
Created the Destroyer is a good read. It lacks the charactor that the later books bring, but it still has all the elements. I think you'd have to read the Destroyer 1 just to see the roots. ... Read more

Better, maybe, but still awful
I keep reading these books hoping for a return to the real Destroyer but it just isn't happening. The writer can tell a decent story but he just can't write Remo and Chiun. The only good thing I can say is thank goodness Gold Eagle is almost through with the series. A new contract has been signed with a new publisher that puts Warren Murphy back in charge of the books and Jim Mullaney will be back as the writer. We only have to suffer through until next April when The Destroyer returns for real.

Getting Better
This story won't blow your mind, but is well written and (other than one scene where Chiun is openly rude to Smith) the characters are handled better than in some of the more recent books.

Starts out with a good premise and subplot. Wraps up quickly at the end.

Super Reader
While Chiun inflicts some unpleasant training on Remo, he must stop a crazed Doctor's plot to take over the world via human enhancement. Some n*zi style s*x blackmail enters into this. Reno and this very loopy scientist enter into an argument with a bit of abuse and philosophy thrown in.

Rather disjointed and not very good.

I still love this one
First, I have to agree with Fred: the original cover art was much better than the current reissue template.

This book did not directly feature Chiun. Remo was on his own. Remo's assessments of the staff at the forum are terrific and only get better when he learns the secret behind their plan to conquer the world.

This is a down and dirty, physical Destroyer who uses his extraordinary skill at fighting and a unique chess move to save the day.

Getting better, but not quite there yet.
It's good to see a re-issue of an extremely popular series, and "The Destroyer" novels will probably draw interest from history majors as well as those seeking a diversion: Murphy and Sapir tended to use contemporary -- at that time -- social problems and issues as themes.

This novel doesn't properly represent a good start for someone first reading a Destroyer novel (try #3 in the series first), but like #1 in the series, it's essential for the collector and certainly not a waste of money.

There are, however, two minor points I raise.One, the reissue prices are ridiculous for paperbacks.Two, and probably most disappointing, is the decision not to re-issue the original covers.Man, some of that artwork would definitely drive a teenage boy to pick one up. ... Read more

A Really Great Read.
I read this book a few years back and LOVED it.I was cruising through Amazon and came across it offered as collectible and was surprisd to see a bad review on it.It was exciting and felt like it had good insight into the terrorist mindset.I read it very quickly, on a vacation.And I'm a slow reader so that says a lot.Couldn't put it downas I recall.Don't hesitate to buy this one.It's great!

NOT JUST TERRIFIC, PROPHETIC
Warren Murphy's not just a terrific writer, he's a prophet, as you can tell by reading his novel "Scorpion's Dance."It was published 20 years ago BUT with its devastating look at terrorism, it still readsas if it were ripped out of today's headlines.Exciting adventure with the author's trademark humor, this book will be liked by everybody....except those poor souls who prefer their novels with a large helping of political correctness and artificial sweetener.

I liked it
I bought the book when it came out in 1990 and liked it--but Murphy never writes a book I don't like--or hasn't yet and I've read them all since the early 70s--I love his wit and ironic view of the world and its inhabitants

Childish and shallow, right wing propaganda, just plain bad
The book is a tri-polar screed, alternating between break-neck action sequences, lengthy droning back-story on the main characters, and random tirades against liberal politics and ideology. The villains in the story, caricatures of "Ay-Rabs", are just plain bad. Their motivations are never really explained beyond an irrational desire to attack THE USA.

Chapter after chapter is devoted to the social interactions of the main characters, which seem to serve no direct purpose to advancing the plot beyond adding some length and spice to the book. Eventually, I stopped reading this tripe and just skimmed past it, so that I could find the spontaneous attacks on liberal social policy and ideology. The author lashes out at the UN, the liberal media, tax-raising politicians, and more. The author's blatant disdain for the Left interferes with the plot of the book, and reminds me of the crap written by Patrick Robinson in Barracuda 945.

I stopped reading the book after the most ridiculous action sequence I've ever read. A cruise ship is hijacked by 10 or so terrorists, but is liberated on a lark by the 3 main characters in the book - 2 of which seem to not really have any counter terrorism experience. They kill all of the terrorists without any civilian or good-guy casualties. Oh yeah, they also miraculously have a silent helicopter that allows them to assault the ship and trick the terrorists.

Good Introduction to the Destroyer series
I remember how happy I was when news that another Assassins Handbook was in the works . Jim Mullaney had been writing the Destroyer, but his last book was the previous spring. Warren Murphy hadn't been involved in writing since the early '90s at least. Now they had co-written a sequel to Murphy and Richard Sapir's great Assassin's Handbook.

I've reread parts of the book again and again, especially the story "The Man in Room 36-E" and the novella False Starts and Bitter Ends. Like the original Assassin's Handbook, it's full of info on the various characters who have been part of the Destroyer throughout the years -- villains, allies, and assorted supporting characters. We also hear a lot more from Chiun, who gets to write what he wants for a change, such as his explanation of why he is not a racist, and the real titles of the Destroyer books.

High fun
I admit to being an eclectic reader. When I was driving 7.5 hours one way on a Friday and then back again on Sunday, I needed something that went beyond music. I stopped in a truck stop and perused the audio books. The Destroyer series looked fun.

It has been sheer pleasure to listen to! I even (now that I am no longer driving so much) listen to them in the car for the shorter commute.

Cheesy? Campy? Silly? Sure! That is exactly what makes them so much fun. I was a huge fan of the old Green Hornet series and these books remind me of that. They are graphic in description for sure, but listening to Richard Sapir read them is marvelous. He is very talented.

I`ve read 'The Destroyer' for 34 years, which I believe gives me a valid P.O.V. concerning the series...

This entry; "Killer Ratings", delivers in the grand style of 'The Destroyer' all of the wit and fun that has given longevity to the concept. It`s all there; the Remo-Chiun interaction, the ripping satire of (so-called) 'real' people (you know...the idiots that we seem to be forced to put up with because they are famous and we are TOLD that they deserve that fame somehow).

I`ve seen 'The Destroyer' through it`s best and worst times, and I`ll still be waiting for more "Tho` The World May Spin Through Chaos Or Glory", I`ll be expecting The Masters Of Sinanju to "Graciously Throttle The Universe" for our collective enjoyment.

Return to the Past
Those of us who are old enough to remember the original Destroyer Series will recognize this as a return to the original plotless books that were so much fun to read. Shapiro & Murphy wrote what they thought at the time to be the worst written book ever to get printed. When the Publisher asked for another one, they were so surprised that they almost couldn't do it. Guess what? They are still fun to read! Yes, there is a place in this world for sheer absurdity as these books so amply prove. Have fun and read all of them.

what it is
Read for humor. Read for action. Read for tongue in cheek far-right philosophy. A good airport book.

The series at its very best!!
I have read every book from number 1 to this latest, and I have the Best Of's, posters, hats, guides, etc. Needless to say I am a fan. But the newest incarnation with Murphy amd Mullaney are the absolute best ever. The wit and the satire are sharper than ever, and the sometimes subtle, but often not so subtle morality is cutting and fresh. I know these characters, and they are never been truer to themselves in these last books, and have grown into the 21st century heroes that they were destined to become. If you have never read the series, you have missed watching us all go through the lessons of growing up American, and as people of the world community, and you have misssed some cool characters who have seen the world like you would like to have, and at he same time are grateful that you never would. The paradox is delightful, fun and I hope they continue their adventures for a very long time.

ending with a wimper not a bang..
4 volumes in and the new destroyer continues to disapoint.The last book featured Remo vs a genie (?) and a thinly veiled spoof of anti war activist Cindy Sheehan (how dare she oppose the war the that killed her son). This time the villians are poorly drawn versions of Connie Chung and Rosie O'Donnel (as if anybody even cares about these two on either side of the eisle).The team of M & M are still bogged down with boring bashing of anything left of center.At this rate I really doubt these books will ever come back to the level of Murphy and Sapir, and perhaps they should stop trying. ...
