5-0 out of 5 stars Townhouse-A Classic American Style
The Townhouse is a classic American urban building style. This volume follows the history of the American Townhouse from its Colonial roots on the Eastern Seaboard to the style's highpoint in the Row Houses and Brownstones of the late Nineteenth Century.Featured in this book are twenty five beautifully photographed homes. The chapters chronicle the styles evolution from the Colonial and Federal periods to the Greek Revival, Italianate, Brownstone and Queen Anne periods.

For those interested in the history of the style, the first two chapters do an excellent job of placing the Townhouse in its proper historical context. However, the heart of the book are the photographs of the twenty five Townhouses. Most of these homes have been restored and are now museums.Rader Kurazj is a skilled architectural photographer and there are many wonderful photographs of both building facades and interiors. This book is recommended for all those interested in learning more about an important American architectural style.

5-0 out of 5 stars great photos
super photos great for design ideas and research... also helpful in historic renovation projects...

5-0 out of 5 stars TOWNHOUSE LUXURY
This is a very well put together book, the text is well researched and the images are crisp. It's very interesting to see all the different architectural styles. These houses are all furnished beautifully and the photographs really capture the details and craftmanship of these amazing townhouses. When you visitBoston or New York you can't help but be enchanted at the rows and rows of these houses, whether it's New York's Upper East Side or Greenwich Village or Boston's Beacon Hill. The houses in this book are from all over the country, from Savannah to San Francisco and each one is at least as interesting as the last.If you have any interest in townhouses or beautiful books in general, then I believe you will enjoy this book. ... Product Description

The Twin Cities is home to one of the largest and most vital GLBT populations in the nation-and one of the highest percentages of gay residents in the country. Drawn from the pioneering work of the Twin Cities GLBT Oral History Project-a collective organization of students, scholars, and activists devoted to documenting and interpreting the lives of GLBT people in Minneapolis and St. Paul-Queer Twin Cities is a uniquely critical collection of essays on Minnesota's vibrant queer communities, past and present.
A rich blend of oral history, archival research, and ethnography, Queer Twin Cities uses sexuality to chart connections between people's lives in Minnesota. Topics range from turn-of-the-century Minneapolis amid moral reform-including the highly publicized William Williams murder trial and efforts to police Bridge Square, aka "skid row"-to northern Minnesota and the importance of male companionship among lumber workers, and to postwar life, when the increased visibility of queer life went hand in hand with increased regulation, repression, and violence. Other essays present a portrait of early queer spaces in the Twin Cities, such as Kirmser's Bar, the Viking Room, and the Persian Palms, and the proliferation of establishments like the Dugout and the 19 Bar. Exploring the activism of GLBT/Two-Spirit indigenous people, the antipornography movements of the 1980s, and the role of gay men in the gentrification of Minneapolis neighborhoods, this volume brings the history of queer life and politics in the Twin Cities into fascinating focus.
Engaging and revelatory, Queer Twin Cities offers a critical analysis of local history and community and fills a glaring omission in the culture and history of Minnesota, looking not only to a remarkable past, but to our collective future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grab hold of this book!
Very impressed with the current information found in this book - there are many adult ADD books on my shelf, but this is in my top 3 books for everyday referals...worth purchasing!

3-0 out of 5 stars 2 Old 2 B Relevant
Murphy's "Out of the Fog" was published in 1995 -- that's 11 years behind the times! While he might include some informative and interesting stuff here, ADD/ADHD research is piling up with new insights and implications for personal and social-political use.

The very best new work out there, as of 2006, is Thomas E. Brown's "Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults." Brown, a psychiatry prof at Yale's School of Medicine and the associate director of the Yale Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders, hasn't written a self-help guide here; instead, he's crafted the best overview of current thinking about ADD. He answers doubters -- and, refreshingly, discusses why a number of doubts about the very existence of ADD exist.

If you really want to know about ADD, this is the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Out of the Fog: Treatment Options and Coping Strategies for Adult Attention Deficit Disorders
After completing this review, I realized that if you have ADHD (like me), you may need to take a break in order to make it through to the end.
I am experienced reader of books on the subject of ADHD. The first thing I noticed about the book was the small font and paragraphs which extended very close to the edge of the pages. This is not ADHD-friendly. That said, an effort is made to use summary paragraphs. However, as most all ADHD books feature blocking information, summarizing, and reviewing. I tend to expect this rather than appreciate it. Another feature of the book which threw me off (repeatedly): randomly placed (long and winding) case studies (e.g. "Amy had just been diagnosed ...).
Per the DSM IV, "ADHD" is the proper term and covers three sub-types. The term ADD is no longer used (it's a sub-type under "ADHD").The author explains this and then, states: "In the interest of simplicity, we will use the term ADD to refer to all three forms." I stopped and scratched my head ... does he believe his reader base to be so inattentive as to render them unable to deal with an extra letter to describe the very condition about which the book is written? That leads to the second question, does simplicity really call for the incorrect labeling of the subject matter of you book? Lastly, even before the DSM IV change, "ADD" as a label leaves out hyperactivity (and combined) - making it simple, but wrong. Why not refer to it properly and in doing so, encompass the entirety of those with the DSM IV's definition of ADHD?
Okay, this guy is old school and wants to save "H" for "simplicity" of reading. I moved on. Shortly thereafter, I got the sensation that I needeed to break out the pom-poms. I don't read about my ADHD to learn all the "wonderful" things I can accomplish despite my condition. At this point, I was becoming impatient. I flipped to the front of the book and noted it is still on the first version which is dated 1995. I knew the medication chapter should make for some useless reading. I had to flip to the chapter covering medication to find out just how useless. As expected, the chapter is pitifully outdated. Without getting specific, I will just let you know that the chapter spends most of its time on Ritalin as the AD(H)D medication and Prozac as a good anti-depressant. Don't waste your time. "Scattered Minds" by Adler (2006) offers medication information to such a greater extent, that fact alone would justify choosing "Scattered Minds" over "Out of the Fog" if you had only once choice.
So, why the 3 stars - kinda high based on my gripes, huh? I set aside my "ADD" label annoyance, worked through the small font and crammed pages, long and winding case studies, and woefully outdated medicaion infomation. What I found is this book offers very useful coping strategies for Adult ADHD. The book also does an excellent job of identifying problems ADHD creates (which leads to the coping advice). The author knows the subject very well. In this regard, the book is better than average.
I have to mention the book's information regarding how to cope with everyday life. You need to take advantage of technology's cutting edge equipment: "computers, fax machines, calculators, and voicemail." Wow. The calculator? It sure is an improvement over that time-intensive abacus.
Those with ADHD will find the layout of this book poor to the point to classify it as a non-starter. If you desire to understand a loved-one's condition, you would certainly benefit from the information (except medication and technology) provided. If you are looking to get your ADHD life under control, I suggest "10 Simple Solution to Adult ADD" (Sarkis, 2005) because it is laid out with the intended audience in mind. It is a quick hitting, information intensive read. (Yes, Sarkis also calls it ADD - oh well.)

This book has been very helpful so far. It is giving me new ways to think about old problems.I'm only half-way through, but am trying to get a handle on the time management/organizational problems with the help of one of the strategies suggested.I would imagine that most of this information would seem very obvious to the "normal" person, but to those of us who are "in the fog", it is invaluable. Thanks for writing this book Dr. Murphy!

Product Description
A social-psychological model of organizational appraisal processes which emphasizes the goals pursued by raters, ratees and other users of performance appraisal is described in this book. The authors suggest ways in which this goal-oriented perspective might be applied in developing, implementing and evaluating performance appraisal systems.

The model emphasizes the context in which appraisal occurs and takes as a starting point the assumption that many of the apparent shortcomings of performance are, in fact, sensible adaptations to the various requirements, pressures and demands of that context. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Text
I purchased this book for my tax class.Amazon offered it NEW for the same price the bookstore offered it USED.I decided it was a pretty good deal.I didn't purchase the book for personal pleasure, but I found that it is actually a pretty interesting read.It is not thick to understand, but each concept is supplemented with an example (or multiple examples) which makes the material a LOT easier and thorough.I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn the tax system and make the most out of their tax return.I know I will be referencing it in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed!

This book helped me pass the REG section of the CPA Exam.I did not do well in taxation back in college, but this book helped me understand the reason why a certain tax code exists. This book explains concepts very well and rightfully justifies its title. ... Read more

Product Description
After St. Patrick drove the Father of Lies and the snakes from the surface of Ireland in 437 A.D., dragons, witches, ghosts, fairies, leprechauns, giants, druids, demons, and other beings from the dark side no longer roamed as freely in Ireland as they once did. Their decline has reached such a point through the years that today almost no one recognizes the few that are left among us. But the Father of Lies has a plan to change that, and his plan depends on his capture of Kevin Murphy's soul. He will stop at nothing to accomplish this so he can again roam freely in Ireland.
Sixteen-year-old Kevin lives with his family in Estes Park, Colorado. When his family visits Ireland to explore his father's family history, Kevin thinks the trip will be a lot of sightseeing. Little does he know that his normal life will suddenly be turned topsy-turvy when he meets a real live leprechaun and discovers that fairies, ghosts and demons aren't just myths. They're real, and they're joined in this exciting story by other fascinating characters and creatures including the terrifying ruler of the Shadow World, the Father of Lies - who is determined to steal Kevin's soul. ... She began her career as a journalist in the 1970s. She resigned in September 1999 when the magazine's sister publication, In Dublin, was banned by the Censorship of Publications Appeal Board for advertising brothels and prostitution services. O'Reilly was also a broadcaster on RTÉ and Today FM. In the course of her journalistic career, she won two awards: Journalist of the Year and Woman Journalist of the Year. On 1 June 2003, she received her Warrant of Appointment as Irish Ombudsman and Information Commissioner from the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, at Áras an Uachtaráin. She has said of her job title, "I will be an ombudswoman but will have no difficulty in being referred to as either". O'Reilly, in a speech delivered in Dublin on 20 June 2006 to the Institute of Public Administration, criticised some Irish public bodies for retreating from dealing personally with the public through the use of call centres and the Internet. She cited the Revenue Commissioners in this context, pointing out that a significant proportion of the clients of these bod...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=235631 ... Read more

Product Description

With its patchwork of secluded courtyards, gardens and narrow tree-lined streets, New York’s Greenwich Village is one of the very few neighborhoods that still retains the charm and timelessness of old New York. In this overview of houses from the early nineteenth century to contemporary Modernist examples, Kevin Murphy explores the architecture and interiors of eighteen houses and two gardens located in what has become one of New York City’s most exclusive and desirable residential communities.

Beginning with the Robert Blum House (1827), The Houses of Greenwich Village traces the rich history behind each home and delves into the compelling biographies of its original owners and architects, revealing the evolution of structure, design, and style in the neighborhood throughout the nineteenth century, as well as its vibrant and at times eccentric character into the twentieth century. The stunning photographs by Paul Rocheleau were specially commissioned for this book and give readers unprecedented access to some of the most beautiful homes in New York.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I expected.
This fine book provides a good introduction to Village history and augments it with beautiful photographs of the houses that make this enclave so special. I especiallyrecommend it to anyone interested in architectural history.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the Greenwich Village I lived in for 40 years
I was raised in, and lived most of my adult life in, New York's Greenwich Village. I purchased this book thinking that I might see some of the many homes I knew, both famous and infamous, as well as the streets of that neighborhood. -- Well, if that's what you hope for, too, then move on.... This book looks like ANY recent copy of Architectural Digest, showing ANY rich & well-to-do home in ANY city or town. Nothing about this picture book looks like Greenwich Village. It's strickly a high-end type of generic furniture catalog. A real waste of cash. ... Read more

Product Description
"Bard, come forth; face me."

With these words Mannam, the Lord of the Dead, commands Paedur the Bard to become the champion of the Old Faith.

The Culai Heritage by Michael Scott is an omnibus collection of his three novels chronicling the adventures of the bard Paedur.

In Magician's Law, Paedur is commanded by Mannam, the Lord of the Dead, to remind the people of the old ways, which are dying out. Thus begins his adventure traveling the realms, and so through his thoughts, words, and deeds breath new life into the old ways. In doing so he will meet some of the most interesting people and creatures that live in these lands. Also at all times he must be on the lookout for those of the new lords who wish to stop this reawakening of the old ways and to show once and for all that they are the ones who shall be worshiped.

In Demon's Law, Paedur finds himself traveling across the bridge between life and death. For he has found that Mannam may not have been totally upfront with him about what is going on in the realms. For, if you are the Lord of the Dead, what better way to increase your power then by having men fight, and die, for their lords? Now Paedur must take the fight directly to Mannam in his land of the dead. Can the bard who once was the champion of the old ways be strong enough to fight a lord in his own land?

In Death's Law, the power struggle between the old and the new ways still rages on. This time the lords themselves decide to join the fight personally, instead of simply guiding their worshipers. When the lords go to war, man is the loser. For what will be left of the realms when they are through unleashing their powers at each other? One man, Paedur the Bard, once champion of the old ways, stands between men and the lords. Can Paedur convince the lords that to continue this fight will not only destroy the realms, but lead to their own ultimate destruction? ... Read more

Arrived on time, decent price, but book was dirty and since I had intended to give as a gift, I was unable to do so. To me 'good condition' should not denote unclean.

5-0 out of 5 stars genius! absolute genius
If The Hobbit has become a worldwide sensation, then The Culai Heritage should as well. It is unbelievably clever, compelling, wise and a fascinating tale coupling old and new philosophies. An avid Michael Scott and Nicholas Flamel fan, I was constantly amazed by his storytelling and I became easily entrapped in his clever web of folklore mythology meets fantasy adventure. An excellent read...three for the price of one!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The LostMasterpiece
This has to be one of the greatest collection of Fantasy volumes I have ever read. In truth this is a collection of three books that were published as far back as the early 1980's. Magician's Law, Demon's Law, & Death's Law make up the three original volumes, published in Paperback I only wish I could get them in Hard Back. The original Art Work fully complimented the volumes and the amazingly original fictional mythology contained within. Unfortunately they are very difficult to find, so what a treasure to find this collection. I have always wanted to share these volumes but had no wish to release the original books to others, they were so important to my collection.

Scott creates a world so real you can almost hear the voice of the Bard as he works his magic. Scott peoples his creation with creatures both original and incredible, a unique class of characters that have both depth and substance. He weaves a web of intrigue and action and populates it with creatures of nightmare and wonder. One of the most important characters is of course the Bard, a man or a monster. He is seen as a Demon, a DemiGod but never a mere man, except when Scott allows us to enter his mind.

Scott is a true Seanachie, and one of the best Authors I have ever had the pleasure to read. This is one investment you will never regret.

5-0 out of 5 stars an outstanding tale
This is an outstanding series. Rich with colorful characters, both Gods and men. A rich archeological history unfolds as the Bard attempts to save all the planes of existance from the folly of man and deity. The characters are strong, with a great sense of growth. Kept me reading late into the night; I'm a bit tired this morning but feel oddly satisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars Masterful Fantasy
This is a collection of the three books:Magician's Law, Demon's Law and Death's Law by Michael Scott.

Scott weaves a fluid story, introducing the character of Paedur the Bard.A man of learning, with a hook in the place of his left arm, he is chosen as the Champions of the Old Faith.Setting out to gain followers and stand against the rise of the New Religion and its gods, Paedur enlists the aid of an errant bandit with a claim to the thrown, a Weapon Master, a slave, a priestess, a long-dead warrior, and many others. He becomes embroiled in wars between the gods and man, making enemies among both the Pantheon of the Old Faith and the New Religion gods.

The mythology of Paedur's world is brought to life in the stories that he relates while on his mission... stories which then take on new meaning as the events they depict have fallout in the present day.The climax brings the story full circle, actually having caused me to flip back to the beginning of the first book to doublecheck something.

If there is one fault in Scott's writing, it is that the stories are woven so naturally into the tale that when the events come up again, I frequently found that I couldn't remember the details earlier presented.A timeline would have proven useful. But this is really a minor hindrance, and the series is overall extremely enjoyable. ... Can you hear it? The whispered laughter carried by the wind? Can you see Them? The faint shadowy forms that move through the woods near Lake Overtree. The ones whose very presence is silencing the wild life? Can you feel the changes in the air? The changes taking place in one young man whose entire world is shifting, changing to accommodate his desires. The girl of his dreams is his for the taking, the kids who bullied him are going away one by one, and even his worst enemies are seeing him in a different light. His body, once soft and flabby, has grown strong and lean, something he never expected would happen. His stepfather, Joe, has finally stopped looking at him like garbage and started treating him like a real son. Every hope, every wish that Mark Howell has known in his lonely life is coming true. Can you hear it? The mournful wails of families torn apart by the loss of their loved ones? The faint screams of the damned, of those foolish enough to cross his path? Listen carefully. 4-0 out of 5 stars A break from the hum-drum
I have gotten so used to the same old plots that when i started reading this book-- I was shocked. I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters, the plot was excellent. James A Moore is a talented writer. I was and am quite impressed with his work and will be buying more of his books very shortly, hopefully they will be as enjoyable as this book was.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exciting read!!!
Have you ever read a book that was written so well, so detailed, that it played out in your mind like a movie? I mean you could just picture everthing and everyone like you were there. That is this book. Only because I have 2 kids and had to eat and sleep did I put this book down! I am an avid reader, and very few authors capture me, John Saul being at the top of my list, but this book definately rated a recomended reading from me! I look forward to reading more works by Mr.Moore.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very good begining
One of these days James A. Moore is going to be a big name in horror. Under the Overtree is a pretty good way to get a career started. Take one picked on teen: Mark, fat, unattractive to girls but not to bullies, and unhappy at home and add a supernatural power source and you've got an exciting story. My only gripe is the ending which seemed tacked on, predictable and rushed. The book would've been better served without the last few pages.

Was this book worth the money? Yes. Should you rush out to get the next Moore book? Oh yes! Check it out.

3-0 out of 5 stars Deserves More, but...
Reading the quotes acclaiming what a huge talent that has arrived in the horror genre put an unfair pressure on this novel before I even began reading it.
The tale(maccabre of course) of a small town in Colorado and the angst and pain of new citizen and high school student Mark Howell who at the beginning is slightly overweight to fit in is a creppy story well-told.
Moore foreshadows the psychological as well as physical changed being worked on Mark quite well. His supporting cast of characters while not fully flushed out are not 2 dimensional stereotypes or caractitures either. The bully grows with the narrative and Moore allows his character to evolve during the story, for which he deserves much credit.
In fact he did many things well in this novel, and there were echoes of King in the writing making the comparision not completely unsuitable. However his length and the fact that this novel could have been much scarier forced me to give it three stars in my humble review. An excellent effort with room to improve. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Ugh...most stories were simply sub-par and boring
I admit that I bought this book because it had an all-too-rare Changeling: The Dreaming story in it. Turns out, it's the last story in the book, is only a handful of pages and not even remotely resembling the actual plot, rules or storyline of the game. I DID read through all of the stories though and here's my take.

The Five Petals of the Lotus by Kevin Andrew Murphy (Kindred of the East) was a pretty ho-hum opening to the book. They didn't bother cluing you in on game terms or anything so if you're not familiar with the system (as I was not) it took a bit to force you way through things which simply weren't explained. Didn't really go anywhere and you didn't feel like you accomplished anything when it was done. It also ends rather abruptly. The concept seems interesting enough, and perhaps if given a full novel treatment it could have been good, but as it stands it just wasn't anything that great.

The Silver Crown by William Bridges (Werewolf: The Apocalypse) came up next and it was pretty decent. Again, I'm not all that familiar with Werewolf, but while they didn't really explain things per se, you didn't feel left out of the story. It flowed along well enough, telling the tale of the Heir to the throne's return to werewolf society, his challenge (and loss) to claim his crown, and his quest within the Umbra for a legendary treasure to help remove the Wyrm infestation threatening his homeland.

Mister Magick by Edo Van Belkom (Mage: The Ascension) was probably the best story of the lot. It actually made me interested in reading up some more on the Mage series. It's quite long actually, and starts off as the growing-up story of an impoverished kid in Canada and his love of stage magic. It progresses through his journey to stardom and his meeting and eventual apprentiship to a famous magician - and Mage. Has a good overall story and brings you along on the generalities of the Mage world.

Beyond the Shroud by Rick Hautala (Wraith: The Oblivion) was by far and without a doubt the WORST story in the book. It was simply a HORROR. First off, I can't ever imagine, if the game was anything like the story, that anyone would ever in their right mind, want to play this unbelievably depressing and repetitively boring game. The story itself is well over two hundred pages and only had plot for about fifty. I don't know how many times you can read about the main character feeling disoriented, lost for time, falling in a pit of blackness, feeling the darkness pulling at him, thinking that he should just give up (and then, mustering his courage not to - until the next scene where we repeat ad nasuem), the fact that everything is distant and muffled, etc. etc. etc. but my gods, it just drags on. This story just shouldn't be. There are no redeeming qualities to it and it's just a huge waste of paper.

The Muse by Jody Lynn Nye (Changeling: The Dreaming) wraps up the book with a scant TWENTY PAGES (were most stories took around a couple HUNDRED pages). But, it doesn't matter because I don't know what it's trying to talk about, but it's certainly not Changeling. Yeah, there's some vague, kithless and undescribed fae who's inspiring some artist and then there's also some faceless "seelie" (again, no kith, description or even physical characters) trying to stop her from reopening a gate to Arcadia. But...there are so many things wrong with this story, that listing them would take up more pages then the story itself. It's such a shame that no one took the time to tap this HUGE resource of Changeling storyline into fiction and novel (possessing only the Immortal Eyes Novel Trilogy, The Vampire/Changeling cross-over "Pomegranates Full and Fine", and the anthology "The Splendor Falls" as the entire novel catalog). I mean, it's a game about the limitless possibility of Dreams for crying out loud! *sighs*

Anyway, the Werewolf and the Mage stories were the only ones worth reading. The book's in no way worth it's $15.99 cover price, but if you can borrow it from the library or a friend, those two tales aren't half-bad. Beyond that, I'd say pass this one by.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book was great, for all WoD games
I liked this book because it helped me to understand the World of Darkness better. It helped my Chronical to reach new heights. I made me relize how cool this game could really be. Product Description

In 1998, health expenditures in the United States accounted for 12.9% of national income-the highest share of income devoted to health in the developed world. The United States also spends more on medical research than any other country-in 2000, the federal government dedicated $18.4 billion to it, compared with only $3.7 billion for the entire European Union. In this book, leading health economists ask whether we are getting our money's worth.

From an economic perspective, they find, the answer is a resounding "yes": in fact, considering the extraordinary value of improvements to health, we may even be spending too little on medical research. The evidence these papers present and the conclusions they reach are both surprising and convincing: that growth in longevity since 1950 has been as valuable as growth in all other forms of consumption combined; that medical advances producing 10% reductions in mortality from cancer and heart disease alone would add roughly $10 trillion-a year's GDP-to the national wealth; or that the average new drug approved by the FDA yields benefits worth many times its cost of development.

The papers in this book are packed with these and many other surprising revelations, their sophisticated analysis persuasively demonstrating the massive economic benefits we can gain from investments in medical research. For anyone concerned about the cost and the value of such research-from policy makers to health care professionals and economists-this will be a landmark book.
