Product Description
Thirteen of black America's most eloquent voices share their visions for a self-sufficient, self-determined future. From Spike Lee's encouragement of independent, community fundraising to Joycelyn Elders's warning about the failings of our "sick-care" system to Stanley Crouch's disputation on "heroic" versus "anarchic" individuality, Black Genius is an exceptional, unique colloquy. Conceived by acclaimed novelist Walter Mosley and sponsored by the New York University Africana Studies Program and the Institute of African American Affairs, this book originated as a series of community conversations where "visionaries with solutions" shared powerful views on personal and communal struggles, triumphs, and aspirations. The list of contributors suggests the range of perspectives and talents brought to bear on such issues as economics, political power, work, authority, and culture. Black Genius is a point of departure for vigorous discussion of our current realities and goals for the future--and a portrait of "genius" that leads the way to enriching American life in the twenty-first century.

The contributors: Walter Mosley, Spike Lee, Haki Madhubuti, George Curry, Melvin Van Peebles, bell hooks, Julianne Malveaux, Joycelyn Elders, M.D., Angela Davis, Farai Chideya, Stanley Crouch, Anna Deavere Smith, Randall Robinson.Amazon.com Review
These essays are taken from a symposium held in New YorkUniversity's Africana Studies Program, whose participants includedgifted writers and thinkers from the upper echelon of Afro-Americanachievement. The organizer, novelist Walter Mosley, writes, "Theintent of Black Genius was to assemble a group of blackintellectuals, artists, political activists, economists who havebroken the visor and seen beyond the fallacies of race.... We wantedto present the stories of women and men who had made it in spite ofthe system." Farai Chideya delivers an on-point analysis of themedia's misrepresentation of blacks and offers a blueprint for moreup-front and behind-the-scenes representation in the newsroom. CriticStanley Crouch body-slams the negroidal nihilism and black "gansta"mentality in rap music, while Angela Davis delivers a nightmarishassessment of the growing African American prisonpopulation. Others--including Julianne Malveaux, Randall Robinson,Spike Lee, and Anna Deveare Smith--take aim at health, the filmindustry, Wall Street, and the state of African-descended peoplearound the world. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best easy and informative reads i ever seen
I like the fact that each author puts in new material about their perspective of what Black genius is. Some toot their horn a little, but thats ok since these are people that made it in the world. Some are informative, and some are inspirational. It actually, actually I repeat, has some advice on how to live life (as not only a Black person) and see it in another light.
YOu dont have to read the ENTIRE book at once, its chapters are individual themes and subjects which you can choose to read according to your taste or mood. I applaud such great talent put together in this marvelous book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heather Covington's 5 Star Review of the Day: Black Genius
Why are we intrigued by all of Spike Lee's Movies no matter how bad or good, or Easy Rowlin's character in Walter Mosley's Devil In A Blue Dress? Is it the casting of characters, the mystery of the black experience or the marvel of these geniuses who seem more talented then life itself at times. they are the folks who encourage to hold on to life, catch a dream, and believe that success doesn't have to be a thought but a realization. This book contains the very folks who may or may not seem like geniuses to everyone, but just the mere power of their actions has transformed a generation through movies, literature, sports, fashion, journalism, and Humanitarianism. I always sink into these anthology compilations because I am curious to find out the reasoning behind some of the great Black African Americans featured in anthologies like this. It may be true that to be a success is to know success, but for those who don't have that convenience...why not read about it?

5-0 out of 5 stars Diversity of Opinions and Backgrounds very welcoming
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.Too many times the Black community is treated as if we all believe only one idea or follow one way of doing things."Black Genius" brings out the qualities our many talented Kings and Queens by providing personal narratives with solutions to many concerns that effect the Black Community daily.I highly recommend this book.If you are concerned about issues in the Black community you wont be dissapointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Appetizing Food for Thought
This is some of the heaviest reading I have chosen in a long time. While I must say I did not agree with several of the viewpoints of the collective writers, the writing was done with conviction and the ideas werethought-provoking.I recommend this book to any students of AfricanAmerican history, Journalism or Economics.I thought a better title forthis work would have been Collective Black Genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
The only reason I bought this book is because Walter Mosley's name was attached to it.Mosley is one of America's most valuable treasures, and I jump at any opportunity to experience his words. However, while his essayis excellent, the other authors more than hold their own.

I don't knowwho the intended audience is for this book, but I think it should berequired reading for everyone. From age 15 through 90.Liberal,conservative, egalitarian, libertarian, agnostic, spiritual, what haveyou.

I cannot put my respect for this book into words.I am saddenedwith the realization that this book will go unnoticed by many because of anumber of reasons. This book deserves much more recognition than it hasreceived to date. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've read 'em all...I like this one the best
I could read Joseph Antonelli novels forever. I've finished them all. I liked them all, but I especially liked this one. I read the books out of order, but they were nonetheless enjoyable. I hope that DW Buffa has another novel ready to publish soon, because I can't get enough, and I'm done with everything. I liked this one a lot, partly because it takes place in San Francisco. But I also like the way he ties up things, and the way Antonelli seems to kick more butt in this one. I liked the courtroom dialog and the the way he writes about the process and logistics of a trial. Of course, courtroom and trial events are in all the novels, but I especially liked this one. This was the book I chose to be my first Kindle book. Good stuff all around.

3-0 out of 5 stars Promising, but Sloppily Realized Courtroom Drama/Suspense
WARNING: THIS REVIEW IS FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE ALREADY READ THE BOOK

I thought the premise was fascinating and held a lot of possibilities. But there were so many sloppy elements and dropped balls.

For example:
1. Why wasn't there a big argument in the courtroom about the angle of incidence at which the bullet struck the suspect's back? Which was it? Was he turning around, or was he running away? If he was turning around, the evidence of the bullet wound would probably have shown that his torso was nearly sideways to the policewoman; if he was running away, it was culpable to shoot him in the back, not to mention that she did not identify herself or tell him to halt. Once the question of a culpable police shooting was raised with any force, the possibility of a planted weapon (to cover up the inexperienced policewoman's improper use of force) would gain a footing.
2. Hence, in addition, why no question as to whether the weapon showed fresh damage from dropping onto the pavement?
3. Most egregious, why no discussion of forensic analysis of the suspect's hands and gloves? If he was guilty, either his hands or his gloves would have had to show powder residue.

I won't give examples, but I found it unbelievable again and again that attorneys for both the prosecution and defense were allowed to lead their percipient witnesses into long chains of speculations, opinions, heresay testimony--even testimony about the supposed thoughts and feelings of others--without objection from opposing counsel. I don't get this from an author who was a defense attorney for 10 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Antonelli...shrewd, gifted & machiavellian"
"The Legacy,"Dudley W. Buffa, NY, Warner Books, 2002ISBN0-446-52738-6, HC436 pg., 9 1/4" x 6 1/4".

The 4th(?) of 7 Joseph Antonelli novels finds the protagonist attorney coaxed by cousin Bobby Medlin & law partner Albert Cravens, friend of the accused's mother, defending a youthful Black pre-med student Jamaal Washington from charge of murder, having been wounded on a foggy night fleeing the scene by rookie cop Officer Gretchen O'Leary accompanied by officer Marcus Joyner. The victim, US Senator Jeremy Fullerton, was running for Governor amidst a bevy of political intrigues involving power broker Lawrence Goldman & his daughter Ariella, various White House factions, Governor Augustus Marshall, Andrei Bogdonovitch formerly alleged to be with Russian KGB, & some other notables.

Antonelli meets divorcee Marissa Kane, the two are enamoured with one another - but as the trial begins Antonelli is repeatedly warned of lurking dangers should his client be found innocent.

The courtroom players, Judge Thompson & DA Haliburton & courtroom interrogations are extolled in exquisite fashion. We learn of the book's title when the trial ends, but the story continues - the ending is a "sleeper" we'd perhaps not expected, but it is nonetheless, fulfilling & typical of Antonelli's sagas.Of Buffa's Antonelli novels, this is one of my favorites. I find his novels do not have to be read in sequence.Get this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it six stars if I could!
The best book I ever read involving courtroom activity. A beautiful jigsaw puzzle of intrigue. The desciptions of how lawyer Joseph Antonelli does his work, down to exactly when he puts his hands in his pockets or moved an eyebrow show how important such things are in communication.I have never read a book that does that so well; I could relate to every item of body language. The story is terrific, and its unwinding a delight. This was my first Buffa book - won't be the last!I am at a loss to comprehend the other poor reviews.Maybe the abridged audio version and Mark Feuerstein's reading make it better than the unabridged hard cover original. All the the characters were excellently formed and believable.Every twist in the plot came as a surprize.I have read about 400 audiobooks in the last 3 years and this was in the top 3. I would think it would make a superb movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pales in comparison to the other Antonelli books
This 4th book in the Antonelli series was quite a disappointment. The first 3 books were well written with tight, interesting plots and subplots.Half way through this one, I had to force myself to continue. The characters were not well fleshed out, one of the "twists" in the story was very obvious from the beginning and overall it was a confusing and muddled tale.Near the end of the book, I found myself looking longingly at the stack of other books that I have available to read and I wound up scanning the last third of The Legacy just to finish it off.I guess all authors have a clunker now and then.I hope this was Mr. Buffa's misfire and that future books in this series will be as entertaining as the first 3 were. ... Product Description
Our Case Studies CD-ROM Series was designed to give students an opportunity to "learn by doing." Most textbook case scenarios are usually brief and only give pieces of the whole case.Actual case files with the court typically contain issues too complicated for beginning students, the documents are too lengthy, or they are often incomplete since discovery devises are not filed with the court.Instructors can create their own cases, but it is often a burden because of the time commitment. With this series, the work is done for them. Each CD-ROM contains a case file, a series of documents that would be found in a litigation, criminal law, or family law file.Documents will be included in their entirety instead of as abbreviated versions. The student will therefore be involved in working on an entire case and not just parts of a case. Each case will be simplistic to appeal to the beginning student, but will still be realistic. An extensive list of assignments is provided for the instructor to select from.None of the cases are state or time specific, so they can be used in any jurisdiction at any time. With these CDs, the student will be able to analyze cases while producing legal documents and preparing legal research, just as paralegals do in actual law offices.By completing these exercises, a paralegal can develop the practical skills necessary to function as a valuable and effective member of a legal team.Mosley v. Okeedoke: Involves a civil action brought by a couple who claim that one of them sustained injuries allegedly from taking an over-the-counter dietary supplement.Claims against the defendant, the manufacturer of the supplement, include negligence, product liability, strict liability and breach of warranty. ...
