4-0 out of 5 stars The Man who Created Sci-fi Art
Frank R. Paul has been called the father of science fiction illustration and with good reason...During the golden age of the Sci-Fi pulps, Paul illustrated over 200 covers for magazines such as Amazing Stories, Science Fiction, Wonder Stories, Future Fiction, Planet Stories, and many more.In those early days of Sci-Fi pulps, the cover was everything. It was the thing that first caught the reader's eye at a time when dozens of pulps crammed the shelves of newsstands. You had make your magazine stand out and no artist did a better job of this than Frank R. Paul.

Stephen Korshak's gorgeous book relates Paul's ascension as artist, first working for publisher Hugo Gernsback doing illustrations for science magazines and then assigned to design a logo for Gernsback's latest magazine, Amazing Stories, the first sci-fi pulp.Paul also illustrated the cover for the first issue, dated April 1926.Paul would do dozens of covers for Amazing Stories including what most believe was the first illustration of Buck Rogers in 1928.Ironically perhaps Paul's most well-known illustration wasn't for a pulp cover at all but rather for the very first issue of Marvel Comcs in 1939, depicting the Human Torch burning through a vault. The Marvel Age was born thanks to that cover.

This beautiful book is filled with hundreds of color and black and white illustrations displaying not only Paul's immense artistic talent but his fertile imagination as well.In addition the book features a preface by Arthur C. Clarke and an afterword by Forrest J Ackerman.A big thank you to Shasta Phoenix for finally giving Frank Paul his just due as one of the greats of Sci-Fi illustration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book title - amazing works within
Frank R. Paul is the chap responsible for those unforgettable AMAZING STORIES covers (well, a lot of them). If you're a fan of vintage sci-fi illustration (which in my humble opinion craps all over 3D computer illustrations), you will be in hog-heaven. Paul was one of the absolute masters of illustration, an amazing draughtsman/ painter. This book contains plenty of full colour examples of his work as well as black and white illustrations, and more information on the man's career / life than you need to know. (Interesting intro to early days sci-fi history.)
Paul is one of my all-time favourite artists, so I'm very happy this book exists. Have I mentioned the many full colour illustrations- for that is where the gold in this here publication is. Usually you will find retro sci-fi illustration books with a fair few of Paul's works, but this here is the Mecca, friends. The Grail. Etc.
Okay, enough waffle. Whether you're into old school sci-fi, art/ illustration or just like books with plenty of pictures - this is the bomb diggity.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful illustrator of our misplaced future
A fabulous compedium of the premier science fiction pulp illustrator. Robots! Spaceships! Monsters! And lots of scantily clad women! This well printed survey of Paul's career makes one yearn for a future that never happened. But it was going to! A must for anyone who loves visionary artists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great general guide
I read the reviews for "SAMS Teach yourself Windows 2000 server in 21 days" after I had already bought this one. I'm glad I went with this choice, as the material is updated and makes the needed comparisons between W2K server and Windows NT server. Jeremy Moskowitz(Sosinsky only writes 5 chapters) outlines all the important features and processes using easy to follow real-world examples. Myself being an NT guru, but not knowing a thing about 2000, found the comparisons especially helpful. If you need a book to read over the weekend to go start setting up a W2K network on Monday, this is the book. Loads of information, easy to follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars My job was made simple.
Extremely well written and helpful.Worth it's weight in gold.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Helpful Book!
I purchased this book after my company asked me about the pros and cons of upgrading our small company to Windows 2000.The examples in the book were very helpful and the writing was very clear. The book is very readable, and doesn't put you to sleep!Since the book is made for people (like me)who need a crash course in the topic, the book obviously can't delve intoall the minutia of W2K.But it covered a whole lot and gave me much moreinformation than I thought I'd get. It's a great beginner tointermediate-level book on the topic, and I definitely recommend it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The City of Endless Night Review
Fantastic Book. A mix of science fiction with a sociological detailed approach. I recommend to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Classic of Science Fiction
Written shortly after the guns of World War I fell silent, CITY OF ENDLESS NIGHT presents a strange yet well-conceived vision of the future that might have been, had the Great War ended differently. The premise is that allied bombing in an extended WWI had driven the Germans in Berlin underground into a series of bunkers and subterranean factories. The Germans quickly discovered ways of surviving under these bizarre conditions, while the Allies failed to figure out any means of ferreting them out, and the war turned into a frustrating stalemate.

The story is set long after this event, when an American accidentally ends up in underground Berlin and attempts to pass himself off as a citizen. The underground city is a horrifying dystopia built along the latest scientific principles.

Milo Hastings has a nice appreciation for the possibilities and perils of civilization and technology. He was at one point a poultry scientist, and later a proponent of health food and healthy living in an era where such things were unusual.A scientist, a believer in the Common Man, in fresh air, sunshine, good food, and healthy living, Hastings wrote convincingly of asociety that made Orwell's 1984 look like a walk in the park.

I find this book to be strangely compelling. The plot runs along familiar pulp-fiction lines, but because the story comes from an era where even non-fiction was written as if it were pulp fiction, this rarely detracts from the story. And the underground city and its society, with their odd combination of WWI-era archisms and appallingly plausible innovations, kept me fascinated to the very end. ...
