Product Description
"The first time I saw William Morris's idols I felt an electric thrill, not only because of the incredible artistic prowess each of them represents, but also because I recognized them. It was like finally finding myself before the intangible beings I had been looking for all my life, that I had glimpsed in dreams and evoked in my writing."--from the Foreword by Isabelle Allende

For more than twenty years, William Morris has captivated and intrigued the art community with hauntingly evocative and beautiful glass sculptures. He has captured the imagination time and again by creating objects that appear to be ancient stone or wood carvings, not the modern glass sculptures they actually are. His art speaks of human origins, myth, ancestry, and ancient civilizations. It symbolizes a harmony between humanity and nature and provides a ghost-like bond to the world around us--a world that is often forgotten, ignored, and abused.

Morris gathers much of his inspiration from ancient cultures from around the world--Egyptian, Asian, Native American--all peoples who respected and admired the land they inhabited. Because of this, Morris's artwork has become something all its own: culturally distinct and yet familiar to all cultures. His pieces embody a spiritual quality that sharply contrasts old beliefs with those of the modern world. These objects speak to our senses and continuously beg us to explore them further. William Morris: Mazorca, Objects of Common Ceremony does just that, exhibiting Morris’s most recent collections in detailed images that seemingly come to life on the page, just as his sculptures come to life in the studio. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Morris' evolution
The Sundering Flood is my favorite among Morris's fantasies, and was one of the last (if not the very last one) written. His earlier works (Wood Beyond the World, Well at the World's End, etc.) are modelled after the romances of the high Middle Ages and late medieval/renaissance works. In The Sundering Flood, Moris looks back further in time, and incorporates thematic and stylistic elements of the Norse sagas. This is particularly evident in the first part of this work. The overall structure does resemble Well at the World's End, but this work is not derivative. The action is tighter, more varied, and more detailed. It is the closest of Morris's fantasies to a modern novel. The language remains archaic, and might put off some readers; but if you persevere you will adjust to it, and find this a great story.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not one to cut your teeth on.
Morris devotees will find it well worth reading (and the four stars are for benefit of those readers).Others may find it impenetrable. Those who have never read any of Morris' works absolutely should start with The Well at the World's End, which is his masterwork, and I'd hate for anyone to be discouraged from that experience. ... Product Description

This study focuses on the great polymath William Morris and his contemporaries and followers: from the popular or notorious, like H. Rider Haggard, H. G. Wells, and Friedrich Engels, to the quickly forgotten. In what ways did these Victorians and Edwardians talk about 'community' and 'modernity'? To what uses did they put the notions, and how did different discourses contribute to their formation and appropriate their meanings? To answer these questions, Anna Vaninskaya has drawn upon a wide array of primary sources: from fantastic and working-class fiction, and articles in mainstream periodicals and fringe radical newspapers, to political pamphlets and ephemera, historical, anthropological, and literary treatises, autobiographies and diaries. Vaninskaya's narrative proceeds from the realm of publishers' advertisements, romance bestsellers, and sniggering reviews to the university towns and debates in the pages of weighty historical tomes, and thence to the headquarters of revolutionary parties, to street-corners and shabby lecture halls. In each of these domains the dream of a primitive or socialist community clashed with the reality of the modern state and market. The three parts of the book foreground each of these domains in turn, highlighting the paradoxical negotiations Morris and his contemporaries had to engage in, and bringing together hitherto unexplored aspects of nineteenth-century literature, culture, and history. Key Features * Brings together for the first time in one interdisciplinary study the worlds of fin de siecle literature, politics, and historiography * Redefines the terms of the critical debate about the late-Victorian romance revival * Puts into dialogue mainstream and marginal literary productions * Uncovers the full extent of the contemporary radical appropriations of nineteenth-century scholarship * Incorporates previously unexamined archival material

3-0 out of 5 stars O.K. book on Biltmore Estate aimed mainly at younger readers
This green, hardback book sans a dust jacket was published in 1975 by the Biltmore Estate and was written by George Vanderbilt's grandson, William A. Cecil. This book, full of photographs (all black and white but many full-page) is written in a simple language in large-type that younger readers could easily read and comprehend.Though many of the photographs are of the outside grounds and up-close shots of the exterior and fountains, there are a handful of attractive shots of the interior.A few of the photographs that stand out are of the second floor landing of the grand staircase and a shot through the Entrance Hall into the Winter Garden taken from the Gallery. The book would be considered banal when compared to other books written on the Estate (this reviewer's personal favourite being "A Guide to Biltmore Estate (1994) by Rachel Carley, which includes dozens of beautiful photos of the interiors as well as many of the rooms outlined on the floorplans of all 4 levels like the one found in the brochure given to visitors of Biltmore), but nonetheless a quick and enjoyable read for anyone interested in some quick facts about America's largest house, but nothing new will be learned here. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Bradley Macdonald offers a brilliant reappraisal of one of the most influential and revered British intellectuals of the Victorian age. William Morris was, by turns, an artist, writer, social critic, and political radical who shaped both the British (Fabian) socialist tradition and the internationally influential arts and crafts movement. Macdonald focuses on the interplay between Morris's aesthetic vision and his socialist ideology. He argues compellingly that because these two sides of Morris's personality and career are generally considered separately, by art or literary historians on the one hand, and social theorists on the other, their integral relationship has often been neglected. Thus, Morris's career is divided artificially between a "Romantic" early period and a later "revolutionary socialist" phase. In place of this model, Macdonald offers a holistic portrait of Morris as a lifelong "materialist aestheticist"-that is, one who believed in the redemptive power of beautiful objects and everyday, simple pleasures for all classes. This important book is strongly recommended reading for anyone with an interest in modern British culture, politics, and art, as well as for students of Marxist ideology in the West. ... Read more
