Product Description
Alberto Moravia is one of the best known and most widely translated writers to come out of contemporary Italy. This study suggests new ways of reading his fiction in the context of recent works of feminist and cultural theory about gender, the structure of subjectivity and the processes of narrative. It argues that an analysis of Moravia's presentation of contemporary "man" is incomplete without looking at his vision of women. Sharon Wood aims to show this narrative form to be a traditional moralising exploitation of women, the medium for Moravia's own preoccupation with man. Wood's reassessment goes beyond the feminist criticism of the 1970's which dwelt on the context of Moravia's work. She suggests that he is confined by form, this his use of language and gender reflects, rather than challenges, Italian society, and is linked to a political vision that is ultimately reactionary. ... It was first published in 1988; the translation into English by William Weaver appeared a year later. Foucault's Pendulum is divided into ten segments represented by the ten Sefiroth. The novel is full of esoteric references to the Kabbalah, alchemy and conspiracy theory, so many that critic and novelist Anthony Burgess suggested that it needed an index. The title of the book refers to an actual pendulum designed by the French physicist Léon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the earth, which has symbolic significance within the novel. Although some believe it refers to the philosopher Michel Foucault, Eco "specifically rejects any intentional reference to Michel Foucault". The plot of Foucault's Pendulum revolves around three friends, Belbo, Diotallevi and Casaubon, who work for a vanity publisher in Milan. After reading one too many manuscripts about occult conspiracy theories, they decide the...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=160906 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazon and dropped balls
After delaying the rest of my order for weeks waiting for this title to arrive to ship it all together, amazon could not supply it for reasons unstated. I would love to review it, if only I had a copy...

5-0 out of 5 stars Clever stories about common people
Stories about Romans (usually the common class in post WWII Italy)Brutally honest and funny, tragic comedies, and clever little scenarios. His character development is so fantastic that I'm beginning to think it's not fiction at all.I've never read a Moravia short story and felt let down.Bizarre tales (and some are a bit morbid or risque for the time) whether it's tale about the guy who was hired to spy on his friend's wife, or the star-crossed lovers who plan to drive over the girl's cruel aunt, or the guy who tries to have his co-worker killed only to be saved himself by a dirty street hooker.I love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The style is racy, the language simple and the images catchy
Except the names of characters and places and few roman words ,the translation seems to be an original English work. The stories are short so that one can read each one in a few minutes and delve for a while sinceevery story is different in its content that says about the characters, theways and means of their living, their thought process and the result oftheir reflecting actions. The stories are about simple humans whose livingis similar to common people around the world. I wondered they resembledTelugu stories, for Telugu being my mother tongue, the very living stylesof the characters and the circumstances barring the advancesand thefreedom of feminine characters. I like 'The Baby' the most among all. Thelanguage is simple but quite expressive, the style racy and the narrationpicturesque. If permitted I would like to translate some of the storiesinto Telugu. ... Read more

Product Description

Moravia is not simply painting the portrait of an age but also coming to grips through his art with the great questions of all ages - the erotic, love, death, and the purposes of life. 1934 recapitulates the major themes of his art and at the same time takes us beyond them.

4-0 out of 5 stars The fetish, & other stories
This is a splendid book. Short stories of Moravia are of totally different nature from most of the conventional short story writters like O'Henry or Gogol. Moravia deals with human relation - again not to the extent that it crosses the boundaries of relation and flows into the pshycological world of human feelings like Satre. He deals with the polemics of man and woman - mostly trying to manage through the grey background of their daily mandane matters. Little friction often is the source of firest fires destroying family or little frictions which die out after a small flash. What ever the case may be he dscribes it beautifully. Well translations have their own little problemsbut alas I never knew how to read Italian. All the stories have very small canvas and deal with few characters. Some stories are notable like "Insomnia Together" , "All Right" "Family Life". I have not given it full 5 stars as I feel the translations could have been better ... Read more
