Self Examination
Sadly, this book seems to be out of print. So, if you are reading this, try to get one of the last few copies. While this book may appear to be filled with readings for Advent, the main focus of it seems to be self examination. Father Moore reminds us that in Advent, we should try to give at least some thought to the 2nd coming. (Lest we get sloppy.) We need only turn to 2 "Samuel" 11-12 to see an example of this. King David got too relaxed and arranged the vile murder of Uriah so he could steal Uriah's wife Bathsheba. And if we want to expand a bit further, David's career so to speak went on a tragic downfall from here. And it's at least possible that David felt he deserved his tragic decline. In fact, the issue of getting sloppy is also made in the 8th chapter of "Matthew." The faith of the Centurion (who wants Jesus to heal his servant) contrasts with the Jewish authorities who have become too close minded. This wonderful centurion was to have his words made immortal not only in the Gospel, but in our mass as well: "Lord, I am not worthy to receivd you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed." While Advent has a more joyful tone than Lent, Advent is still a period of self examination. (In fact, the Ukraine Church sees Christmas Eve as a time of fasting and penance.) Father Moore adds that being a Christian means accepting the tasks Jesus gives us. In a sermon, my former priest said that: "Being a Christian is more than believing Jesus is the son of God. Even the devil will admit that Jesus is the son of God." Father Moore also explains that the Parables of Christ have to be looked at from 2 angles. The first is obviously what they mean. The other thing we must consider is how they apply to us. In a sermon, my priest said that in the case of the 'Prodigal Son,' there were times when he was most like the wasteful son, the jealous brother, and the forgiving father. In studying theology, we can often forget that a vital part is self examination. Perhaps the greatest thing about this book is that it encourages us to look at ourselves without tearing us apart. In a recent sermon, my priest said: "Causing fear leads to cynicism, which leads to hatred, which leads to false images of God." There don't appear to be too many of these books left.
