Product Description
A guided tour of the variety of architectural home styles that have developed throughout America's history. America has an abundance of fascinating and varied house styles, as diverse as its people. This unique book will allow readers to recognize the architectural features of virtually any house they encounter. John Milnes Baker designed a simple four-bedroom house, and then developed a basic plan for each historical style. Starting each drawing with the same plan and adding essential characteristics, Baker leads the reader through a series of additions. Each section of American House Styles begins with a historical overview of the period, followed by commentary. The author shows how different styles developed and what influenced their development. His elevation drawings, each with a floor plan, illustrate the details and embellishments of each style. Through an understanding of earlier styles, we develop insights into the architecture of our own era. Thus the study of architecture allows us to make informed judgments about what is being built today. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enought detail
I had higher expectations for this book when I bought it.I was looking for a book that covered in depth the different design details used in the different styles of homes. The coverage is rather shallow.

5-0 out of 5 stars American House Styles
Great book to sort out the various styles in american architectural houses. The history of each house is given well and concise. The language is appropriate and the illustrations are excellant.

4-0 out of 5 stars It sells out fast at the book store
This is a great way to study the different elevations/styles that can be applied to the same basic floorplan. Also a quick reference for the many Architectural styles of the U.S.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good, quick introduction
This fascinating book is a quick introduction to the evolution of house styles across the history of the United States. Each chapter has a short introduction to the era in American history, and then launches into a description of the house styles, complete with excellent sketches of a typical house and floor plan of that style. I found this to be a fun and educational read. I enjoyed this book, and highly recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Causes of Architecture
In the beginning of this book the author points out that a culture is reflected in its buildings. Then he goes on to identify the events that caused the various styles--the War of 1812 that stopped our imitation of English architecture, the change to stud framing and the effects of industrialization that mark the Victorian era, the nationalistic spirit of the 1876 Centennial that spawned the revival in Colonial archictecture at the end of the 19th century, etc.--in such a professional style of writing you'd never suspect he was also an architect. A history professor maybe. All of which explains the subject better than the usual bare chronological sequence.

What helps in a book like this are the odd bits of information casually thrown out that show mastery of the subject.
Colonial homes were never white; Greek Revival were never anything but. A particular cornice is usually done incorrectly, compared to the true Classical version.

He also make the sensible point that you can only compare styles within limits, that at some point you're really discussing altogether different building types, as in ranches, bungalows, and certainly octagon houses. And early on he boasts he can design a modern four bedroom house in any style. Then he proceeds to do it, providing a front elevation and a repeating ground floor plan (front: LR, center hall, DR. rear: family room, kitchen, mud room) with added porch, tower, fireplace, chimney, as needed. Not so much to explain the architectural features, I think, but to give the prospective homebuilder something that actually could be built today.

Where most authors stop around WWII, he continues up to the present. His next-to-last chapter shows the recent builder's styles which will be familiar to anyone who's driven through any of those "Vinyl Village" developments with the Olde English names: the Townes, Pointes, Glenns, and Harbours. Here he doesn't hesitate to criticize the tastless examples, and continues his tirade into last chapter, where he argues against the Post-Modern assault on tradition in favor of a return to order and careful design. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Beam Me Up--to Venus!
In an experiment with sending matter by means of radio, Myles Cabot accidently sends himself to Venus. Here he discovers a planet divided between the Formians, giant ant men, and the Cupians, human-like creatures with wings and antennae who have been enslaved by the Formians for over 500 years. Cabot falls in love with a pretty Cupians who turns out to be a princess. Using his knowledge of radio, he constructs a device to help him communicate with the natives, who use their antennae like radio transmitter/receivers. Cabot escapes from the Formians and joins the Cupians. He develops rifles (unknown on the planet) and eventually helps the Cupians rise against the Formians. He communicates his adventures to earth by launching several large projectiles to earth with copies of an account of his adventures, a kind of interplanetary "message in a bottle." Product Description
Many countries have reduced dramatically the proportion of patients in psychiatric hospitals in favour of community care. The demand for mental health care in the community keeps growing, and cannot be met by traditional, conventional services alone. Radical and innovative approaches are now being recommended, which include integrating services and professional groups, delegating responsibility to the operational level — to much smaller areas, the local neighbourhood patches — and developing social support systems in these patches, for example, co-ordinating and mobilising voluntary resources as an important element of community care. It is increasingly recognised that a range of non-professional therapists, practitioners in other professions and services that work in the community, can make an important and cost-effective contribution as partners in interventions for the management and treatment of mental health patients in their communities. This book provides a psychological perspective on this approach, and includes many models, methods and examples of how such innovative interventions can be stimulated and maintained. Derek Milne describes this social support approach as ‘social therapy and shows that it is a process that formalises and builds upon the work that many professionals already undertake, which can be organised and integrated into interventions which are complementary to, and continuing on from, conventional mental health care in the community. All clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and community mental health professionals responsible for practice and policy will find this book a stimulating and practical guide to the development of an innovative approach to the challenge of expanding mental health care in the community. "This is a timely and important book, well-written and well-researched, examining and clarifying social support, and re-conceptualising mental health professionals role in developing it as ‘social therapy. Who better to do this than Derek Milne, one of the innovators of this work in the UK for the past two decades." Richard Velleman, University of Bath and Bath Mental Health Care Trust, UK ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have reference for horror fans
I was lucky to find a copy of this (in hardback) at a library book sale for two dollars. Since it was published in 1986 I would not term it comprehensive but there is an impressive list of horror movies in here, including foreign horror (Japan, Mexico, Iceland, Australia, India, North America, and Western Europe), almost 1,300 in all.

The encyclopedia takes readers from the beginnings of horror movies through the eighties, and lists the movies chronologically. Each movie has a brief synopsis with a critical commentary of the film which I found insightful and interesting. For example, some movies are compared with others that have a similar plot, e.g. the comparison between Kwaidan (1965) with Ugetsu Monogatari(1953), etc. The book also lists many obscure titles that I've never heard of. There are lots of B&W photographs throughout the book which makes this even more of a great find and the middle of the book contains inserts of full-color photographs of scenes from classic horror, e.g. "Dance of the Vampires" (1967), "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), "Tales from the Crypt" (1972),"Nosferatu" (1978), etc.

The book also contains a list of all-time horror rental champs, critics' top tens, horror oscars, and a select bibliography and index. Though this is not current, my interest lies mainly in classic horror, so it suits me fine. Fans of classic horror will find much to entertain and inform in this collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies
The Encyclopedia of Horror Moviesis just that; it is the definitive textbook authority on all things Horror, spanning over eight decades of cinema. It is an important reference tool as well as a complete history lesson on the trends and growths that were experienced within the genre, beginning with the earliest silent classics and ending at the height of the Slasher era, when the book was published. The format is laid out chronologically, dividing each section by the decade and listing the films in alphabetical order by the year of their release in their original countries. Films from nearly every developed nation can be found within its pages, including many entries that are dedicated to the German Expressionists and Asian filmmakers, while also introducing many more obscure titles from countries like Austria or Brazil. Phil Hardy interjects with an informed opinion and rounded knowledge on each of the films being discussed. While his opinions on many of the entries will not be shared by all readers (particularly in his general distaste for the Slasher films), his critiques are always justified and rarely biased. Coming in at over 400 pages, with over 450 black and white stills and an astounding 1,300 film reviews, The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies is an absolute must-have for every Horror fan. It is impossible to thumb through its pages without discovering a slew of exciting new films that may have been long forgotten, but it is integral to read the text from start to finish rather than simply using it as a petty reference tool in order to better one's understanding of the genre.

I Like Horror Movies

5-0 out of 5 stars pleased
was exactly what i ordered.happy with book and it arrived quicker than i thought it would.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can find a reasonably priced copy of this buy it
This is a marvelous old book. The summaries of the movies are detailed and the criticism very knowledgeable. For example, the scariest movie I remember as a youngster was "Black Sunday."And this book does the Mario Brava movie justice. The photos are terrific--but be warned there is nudity. Many of the movies predate slasher films. And if you want to find some monster movies with real depth this is one place to find them. I have to say if you love horror movies this is a must have for your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars pros and cons
Pros: Lots of info, cool pictures, almost compleatly unknown movies (like Death Line) and huge hits everybody knows about (like Halloween) together. Also, not just PG-13 and R rated movies, some are rated X (like Snuff) and NC-17 (like The Evil Dead)

Cons: veary heavy and big-hard to carry around, out dated- only goes up to 1986, no table of contents.

Warning: This book describes movies with killing in graphic detail. The pictures contain nudity and gore.

Over all: Not bad, lots of info, very graphic an ok buy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Quotes, Art, and Eeyore
A mere 80 pages long and measuring 6 inches by 5 inches, this little bitty book is a delight for Eeyore fans. Sprinkled on just about every page by Ernest H. Shepard's classic line drawings, and brimming with quotes from Milne's books and other little pieces of advice from Eeyore, this small book brings big smiles. The whole cast of characters is depicted in Shepard's drawings, from Rabbit, Kanga and Owl to Tigger, Piglet, and Pooh; but for once Eeyore gets to be the star. In his own inimitable manner, he dispenses advice on birthdays, weather, weight loss, hygiene, accidents, guests, and what to do if you happen to be stuck in a river or lose your tail.
All told, this is a gem of a book, equally for the artwork as for the words. Both combine in a lovely little package that would be a great gift for those in your life who can't get enough of that gloomy grey donkey.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute book
For Eeyore lovers, this is a must read.It is short, cute and reminded me of "The Tao of Pooh," but Eeyore style. It was gift quality and in good condition. It arrived well packaged with bubble wrap and extra TLC.Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars You'll Probably Like This Book Unless You Don't
Just 5"X6" this charming little book, inspired by A.A. Milne, makes an excellent gift. It has delightful illustrations and lots of sage advice from the beloved dreary donkey.Have a copy on hand for yourself to read on those days when you're feeling a bit sorry for yourself and are on the verge of becoming a whiner. It always makes me laugh at myself and there's nothing like a laugh to lift the gloom...but don't tell Eeyore. If you don't like this book just remember what Eeyore said, "Don't blame me."

4-0 out of 5 stars "Just b/c you hear a buzzing-noise coming from a tree......
...doesn't mean you're going to get any honey." That's kind of how I felt. This book, overall, wasn't quite as witty as I had anticipated. But then, don't the teachings of Eeyore the wise prepare us for such amoment?:) There were a few very cute quotes, but most of it was fluff. Theart was most enjoyable, though, and I loved the book despite the fact thatit fell short of my expectations. I wouldn't recommend Eeyore's (Gloomy)Little Instruction Book to just anyone. But the artwork and the few reallygood quotes, not to mention the beautiful binding and quality paper, makethis book the perfect gift for every Eeyore fan; indeed, their library willnot be complete without it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Gloomy

Product Description
Death is one of the certainties of life. But what happens beyond death? What inexpressible wonders--or unspeakable horrors--will we encounter beyond the pale of this life? The topic of life and judgment beyond death is one that has occupied the minds of Christians in former eras but today seems to be in partial eclipse. As Bruce Milne argues, we are poorer for it--without even recognizing our poverty. There is such a thing as being so heavenly minded that we are of no earthly good. But there is also such a thing as being so unheavenly minded that we lose sense of earthly good and the gravity of life in the present. This is far more dangerous. In The Message of Heaven and Hell, Milne guides us from Genesis to Revelation, stopping to examine key texts that illumine the destiny of humanity, the nature of heaven and hell and the glory of life everlasting in the presence of God. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great exposure to Appalachian folkmusic
I first purchased this book and cassette tape for my youngest daughter when she was 5. 21 years later I purchased it for my 5 year old niece. It is a wonderful way to expose children and adults to Appalachian folk music and culture.I would like to see it available in CD format.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been to the mountaintop...thanks to this great book!
This is my favorite book/recording combination of all! When my son was born five years ago, I wanted a change of pace from Mother Goose, and these poems sure did the trick! The recording is superior, folksy and fun without being annoying like some children's tapes I've heard, lots of great fiddling.I still remember and sing these poems, songs and riddles to my son, five years later, made so memorable by the great tape. The illustrations are really well-suited to the text, pen-and-ink and watercolor, as homey as a haystack.A lot of love and respect for the Appalachian region went into this project, it's apparent, and whoever reads and listens to this set will find themselves sharing in that love.My family treasures this book and tape in our children's collection, and I bet you will, too! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Tigger (Giant Board Book)
ISBN 0525462333 - I find myself with mixed feelings about the rating of this one, so I'm going with 4 stars and admitting I've been waffling between 3 and 4 for five minutes before committing. I feel like Eeyore. On with the review.

Tigger loves to bounce. He bounces to visit his friends and, sometimes, he bounces his way into trouble - which is when he's very glad to have those friends!

The reason I had trouble deciding how many stars I thought this book really deserved is simple: there's no story here. Really, there's not. The text is so basic and so limited that there aren't enough words to make a story. That bothered me a bit, but I've got to admit that the book isn't for me. It isn't for pre-teens or romance readers or those that go through textbooks for fun. The book's audience is 0-3. They gnaw on books more than they read them and, when they do read them, they're just learning - they don't need to be overwhelmed by too many words, or by big words. This book is great for them!

The illustrations are from The House at Pooh Corner and are the original ones by Ernest H. Shepard; if you're only into the slick Disney version, you'll be disappointed. Board book pages stand up to some rough handling and are turned easily by less-than-nimble fingers. The fact that the book is shaped (somewhat) like Tigger will definitely make it a standout on your shelf. It's oversized, making it a little tough to hold in a tiny lap and not great as a take-along book. All Pooh and Friends fans will want this one, not to mention Pooh (Giant Board Book), EEYORE, Giant Shaped Board Book (Pooh Giant Shaped Board Books), and Piglet (Giant Board Book).

4-0 out of 5 stars My son loves it!
My 18 month old son loves the Winnie the Pooh stories and characters. His favourite is, of course, Tigger, and this new addition to his library is much loved. The text is large and quite basic - just explaining on one page, for example, that Tigger climbs a tree, and on the next page, that he can't climb back down again (uh oh!) which means it's a fast moving read. It's great that it's in the shape of Tigger, too.I believe there's also a Pooh Bear shaped one in the series, that I might purchase next time.
