Product Description
July 1917: Joseph Reavley, a chaplain, and his sister Judith, an ambulance driver, are bone-weary as they approach the fourth year of the conflict; the peace of the English countryside seems a world away. On the Western Front, the Battle of Passchendaele has begun, and among the many fatalities from Joseph’s regiment is the trusted commanding officer, who is replaced by a young major whose pompous incompetence virtually guarantees that many good soldiers will die needlessly. But soon he, too, is dead - killed by his own men. Although Joseph would like to turn a blind eye, he knows that he must not. Judith, however, anguished at the prospect of courts-martial and executions for the twelve men arrested for the crime, has no such inhibitions and, risking her own life, helps all but one of the prisoners to escape.

Back in England, Joseph and Judith’s brother, Matthew, continues his desperate pursuit to unmask the sinister figure known as the Peacemaker - an obsessed genius who has committed murder and treason in an attempt to stop Britain from winning the war. As Matthew trails the Peacemaker, Joseph tracks his escaped comrades through Switzerland and into enemy territory. His search will lead to a reckoning pitting courage and honor against the blind machinery of military justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I have a rendezvous with Death At some disputed barricade, When Spring comes back with rustling shade...."
Set in the battlefields of the Ypres Salient, 1917, Anne Perry's "At Some Disputed Barricade" is not only an unusual murder mystery, it is also historical fiction at its best. The author's description of the Great War's Western Front and the horrors of trench warfare is so visceral that the reader feels, at times, like a witness to the fighting, suffering and endless slaughter. But don't be put off, there are also wonderful moments which display the friendship, camaraderie, bravery and loyalty of the soldiers, who have been brothers at arms, some for more than two years, "at some disputed barricade." The characters come to life on the page, especially the three protagonists who play important roles throughout. This is book four in a five part series - "No Graves As Yet" is #1, "Shoulder the Sky" #2, "Angels in the Gloom #3, and "We Shall Not Sleep" is the conclusion. I highly recommend starting with the first novel, or the second, which does a great job of recapping the plot, if you want to get the most out of this book and the two that follow.

The storyline features Captain Joseph Reavley, chaplain and former Cambridge professor, who ministers to the wounded and dying at the frontlines, risking his life at every moment to bring the wounded to field hospitals, and the dead back behind the lines, to be buried decently. As the Battle of Passchedaele rages around them, a trusted commanding officer is among the many fatalities from Joseph's regiment. He is replaced by young Major Howard Northrup, a pompous, proud incompetent. Northrup's orders, seemingly insane at times, and against the advice of more experienced soldiers, cause many good men to die needlessly. "He is an arrogant fool and his men hate him." The Major is soon found dead, a bullet through his head. When it becomes obvious that one, or more, of his subordinates is/are the killers, Joseph would like to turn a blind eye. But he cannot, especally as the major's father is a general, determined to see the person(s) responsible for his son's death brought before the firing squad.

Matthew Reavley, Joseph's younger brother, is a member of England's Secret Intelligence Service, (SIS). He has spent the last three years seeking the identity of the "The Peacemaker," a mysterious figure who represents those who seek to make a treaty between Kaiser Wilhelm II and King George V, which would unite warring Germany and Britain into a common front. England would abandon France and Belgium to the Germans. The Germans and the British would then form an empire to divide the world between them. "Most of Europe would fall to Germany, who would help Britain to keep its present empire and add to it the old colonies, including the entire United States, which had recently entered the war." This chilling story of treason begins with the first novel, when the Reavley siblings' parents are killed as a result of the Peacemaker's machinations. Tension builds, (really thrilling in parts), until the last episode. Reavley suspects everyone, even his boss. Whomever he is, the treacherous instigator is alive and hard at work, and has been for many years, even before the war began. This Peacemaker believes he can convince the King to sign the treaty to form the "Anglo-German hegemony." He has to be someone important enough to have access to both King and Kaiser. And he must be stopped!

Twenty-seven year-old Judith Reavley, sister to Joseph and Matthew, is a volunteer ambulance driver serving on the Ypres Salient. She has been on the battlefield for almost three years. The once glamorous beauty, is now haggard, exhausted and world-weary. She is anguished at the prospect of courts-martial and executions for any of the brave men accused of the Northrup murder. After all, Judith has worked with and befriended these soldiers over the course of the long war.

The tensions which build around this highly charged drama and murder mystery are chilling. And the Peacemaker's much more nefarious schemes, are believable and quite frightening. I became quickly absorbed in each of the series' mysteries, but this one is the most exciting so far. The author manages to grab the reader and pull him/her along, into another time and place. I know I cannot wait to finish the final book to see who the Peacemaker is and what happens to the characters I have come to like so much.

An unputdowanable read!

5-0 out of 5 stars WWI Mystery
The four novels that make up this mystery story are intriguing in showing England during WW I -- an often ignored historic time of military technolology changes that some historians believe have led the world into the current era of uncertainties that we face globally.

4-0 out of 5 stars Inches Gained and Inches Lost
AT SOME DISPUTED BARRICADE is the fourth in the saga of the Reavely family and their struggles to do their part in World War I. The cost and human sacrifice of the island nation has been terrible as they claw their way across Flanders inch by inch with no end in sight.
Mathew Reavely was sure he'd found and killed the Peacemaker until members of the British government are being removed by death and scandal to prevent their opposition to a surrender treaty which would leave Germany to rebuild her war machine again.
Joseph is in the trenches holding his fellow combatants together as the scrape their way to certain death. When their incompetent commander is found shot and the father, a general demands justice to clean his son's name, Joe and Judith face the moral dilemma of their lives.
Anne Perry pulls you into each story until you feel your hands grip the mud and your tea tastes like oil.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conscience in a crucible
This series is superb, not only as a member of the murder mystery genre, but as fiction itself. The characters are real, the venue believable, the plot engulfing.

I was told by a teacher a generation younger than I that he had not had social sciences stressed during his own primary education. When people spoke of the "Depression" and the "Dust Bowl Years," he really drew a blank. It's a shame that so little emphasis is placed today on the experiences of the past.Little wonder that there are those who deny the holocaust and other sad events in human history.Unfortunately as some great mind once said, "If we do not learn from history, we are condemned to repeat it."Much of human history is just that, repeats of past mistakes made in ignorance of the fact that "we tried that before."Historical fiction like Anne Perry's makes up for that deficit in our education.Certainly with her WWI series, the intense events of the time and the tragic consequences of them are made abundantly apparent and very real for the reader.

I have often enjoyed the classical murder mysteries from the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's for their nostalgic portrait of the cultures of those decades, but much of what comes across in these books is an unconscious transmission of the quality of the time. The author of that time period was more interested in their contemporary readers than in what the future reader might think and feel about the work.

With the historical fiction of Anne Perry mysteries, the full bloom of a culture and its attitudes comes across with precise awareness. The author, with 20-20 hindsight, is able to capture details of her periods--here WWI era France and England--that writers of the time were probably not even aware were or would be significant. For the reader who wants to "experience" a time period, Ms Perry has very successfully provided a peak into the past. The amount of research that must have been necessary to do it must have been major, but it was certainly worth it.

In At Some Disputed Barricade, Ms Perry returns to the lives and experiences of the Reavely family, Joseph, a minister confronted with the limits of religion to explain a world in senseless conflict, his brother Mathew, a secret agent facing the complexities of loyalty, family, and nation, and their sister Judith, an ambulance driver faced with staggering reality near the front lines. The characters must face the unique demands of war on commanders and their soldiers, and on the conscience of the individual in confusing, extreme and conflicting circumstances.

A wonderful read.Human conscience in a crucible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Above Average
This is a pretty good screenplay to a pretty good movie. Interesting fact: it isn't the final version. In fact, there are a lot of differences. But simply put:if you like Michael Crichton's novels, you will like this, as it has more of his trademark realistic science and suspense. However, the plot is somewhat cliched, and the ending is pretty weak, hence my four stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE ORIGINAL
Imagine a cyclone of dirt, stone, and just about anythingthat's nailed down is ripping through the road right in front of yourcar.

That's exactly what Michael Crichton and wife, Anne-Marie Martin, imagined when they wrote this screenplay called TWISTER.

An exciting story about two competing teams of scientists who try to place a special sensor pack into a tornado during a day of endless twisters.

The story is pretty much set aside in favor of exciting action sequences and a humorous romance between the two main characters. But it's still quite a bit of fun.

This is the couple's original draft of the script, made interesting because of it's numerous differences from the final film. The main plot is almost exactly the same, but dialogue, supporting characters, and a great many smaller details will be new to readers who enjoyed the movie.

The book also features an informative intro by Crichton detailing the conception and writting of the script.

So, whether you're a fan of the movie or a fan of Crichton, I'd definately have to give this book a strong recomendation.

And be sure to look out for that cow.

2-0 out of 5 stars DON'T DO THE TWIST
Twister is a bad movie with a horrible horrible plot that adds up tonothing. It's about a couple of tornado chasers that fall in love. Ever sodumb plot. The only thing that makes me give this movie two whole stars isthe special effects (although the movie deserves only one). Special effectsare great in this movie. If your a no plot special effects freak (buff),then you would love this horrible movie Twister. Rated PG-13: for language, and scenes of tornado damage ... Read more

Product Description
A riveting new Thomas and Charlotte Pitt novel, in which Anne Perry again proves her mastery of the people, the mores, and the politics of the
Victorian era she has made her own.A general election is approaching and Thomas is called to monitor the bitter struggle for one crucial London seat.
The Tory candidate is Charles Voisey, ruthless Number One of the Inner Circle and old enemy of Pitt. His Liberal opponent is Aubrey Serracold,
whose wife, Rose, is passionately committed to a socialist agenda and a liability to Serracold as she is immersed in spiritualism. Rose is one of
the three participants in a late-night seance held by clairvoyant Maude Lamont, which becomes notorious when Madame Lamont's brutally murdered body is found the next morning. To Pitt's heavy burdens is now added the investigation of this baffling crime.Amazon.com Review
Thomas Pitt prefers the grim routine of murder investigations to the riskier probing of Victorian governmental intrigues. Yet Anne Perry's Southampton Row again finds him displaced from his police command, this time to foil the political ambitions of a ruthless republican.

Charles Voisey, leader of a powerful secret society known as the Inner Circle, was defeated by Pitt when he tried (in The Whitechapel Conspiracy) to abolish the British monarchy. Only months later, though, he's back on top, running for a seat in Parliament. Under the auspices of the newly created Special Branch, Pitt is charged with learning whether Voisey has any "unguarded vulnerabilities." The odds against Pitt succeeding are high; Voisey may be "shallow, self-important [and] condescending," but he impresses voters as more charismatic and less controversial than his opponent, Aubrey Serracold, who's also hobbled by his connection to the recent slaying of a popular spiritualist. While Pitt's wife, Charlotte, and their family are safely out of London on vacation, Pitt, aided by the gruff but dogged Inspector Samuel Tellman, his politically astute sister-in law, and Charlotte's resourceful great-aunt Vespasia, seeks to solve the medium's murder before it can derail Aubrey Serracold's campaign.

Perry expertly portrays the volatile British political climate of the 1890s, and by making Pitt and Tellman rivals in their investigation, she further illuminates both men's characters. However, Southampton Row reduces the usually intrepid Charlotte to a hand-wringing irrelevance, and the novel feels too much like an intermediate and inconclusive chapter in a longer story arc. Like Holmes and Moriarty, Thomas Pitt and Charles Voisey appear destined to grapple once more. --J. Kingston Pierce ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It's The Pitts, Again
SOUTHAMPTON ROW is another installment in Anne Perry's long running Thomas and Charlotte Pitt series. Since I keep reading them, it's fair to say that I enjoy them and this one is no exception. The plot here is one of Perry's better ones. My only issues with it are twofold. First, Perry indulges her longstanding penchant for wearing her personal political and social views on her sleeve. She moralizes a little more than I would like, but I keep coming back for more, so it's fair to say that this doesn't bother me too much.

Secondly, in this particular book, she has a character who, in her last Pitt mystery, was plotting to overthrow the monarchy, now running for Parliament as a Tory. I understand the urge for power, but this would rank as the heighth of hypocrisy. Also, one has to wonder how the Conservative Party would swallow it even though the character's previous plotting wasn't common knowledge. He could hardly represent himself as a Tory stalwart. Finally, I was amused to notice that Ms. Perry refers to Constantinople as Istanbul in a story set in the 1890's (page 79 in my edition). She always seems to have her historcal details down, so I'm surprised by this obvious slip.

Regardless of all this, SOUTHAMPTON ROW is a pretty good whodunit. Especially recommended for readers familiar with the series.

3-0 out of 5 stars This series is now officially in decline
This is the twenty-second entry in this series about the crime-detecting adventures of Inspector (eventually Superintendent) Thomas Pitt of the Metropolitan London Police in the last quarter of the 19th century, and it's becoming apparent that the author is running out of steam. Either she's out of good plot ideas or she simply doesn't care anymore. Whatever the case, Pitt is no longer a cop, having been squeezed out of his job by the evil machinations of (. . . drum roll . . .) THE INNER CIRCLE. He's been moved over to Special Branch, originally formed to combat anarchists and Irish terrorists and which is now sort of a combination of Nixonian "plumbers" unit and secret police. And he seems well on his way to becoming a proto-Bond with said secret society standing in for SMERSH. Specifically, Charles Voisey (think Blofeld), who was humiliated in _The Whitechapel Conspiracy_ by being knighted by Queen Victoria (yeah), is using his shiny new rep to run for Parliament as a Tory against an inexperienced and not very savvy Liberal candidate. I would expect Special Branch to be backing the Tories, but they've got to stop Voisey from getting elected as that's The Thin End of the Wedge. And that's the reluctant Pitt's job. More than that, Charlotte and the kids have gone off to the Devon moors on holiday and find themselves in danger as well -- though they don't seem to be able to do very much about it. There actually are a couple of murders in the mix, but at least one of the solutions is covered up in the end to protect the government (by essentially blackmailing Voisey). Perry always includes a socioeconomic theme of one kind or another and this time it appears to be spiritualism -- but it's hard to get worked up about something even most Victorians didn't take seriously. I don't know: If the series continues to decay at the present rate, I give it maybe two or three more volumes before Perry's fans throw up their hands in despair.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, but that's never a surprise
As ususal, Anne Perry delivers an amalgamation of Victorian-era decorum and gristle.True to her style, I found myself turning pages without realizing it, absorbing the book like a sponge and eagerly wanting to immediately read the next in the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Aftermath of The Whitechapel Conspiracy
Victorian England wasn't such an interesting place until the vivid imagination of Anne Perry began her brilliant work in creating villains and conspiracies that would delight a student of the grassy knoll in Dallas.

Perry knows when she's onto a good thing, and the action and characters of The Whitechapel Conspiracy continue in Southampton Row.I strongly urge you to read that book first.Otherwise, you will find yourself mildly perplexed from time to time with the book's musings about the Inner Circle. You will probably rate this book with two or three stars in that case.

If you haven't read The Whitechapel Conspiracy, stop your reading right here.

In Southampton Row, Thomas Pitt finds himself retreating under a series of unexpected reverses following his reinstatement by Queen Victoria to head Bow Street. The Inner Circle has reared its ugly head again, and Pitt is assigned to a job he doesn't like in Special Branch where political skill is more important than detective ability.

Thomas and Charlotte have been promised a vacation . . . but that's all changed as Pitt is ordered to monitor a close election campaign between Tory Sir Charles Voisey of the Inner Circle and Aubrey Serracold, a Liberal neophyte. If Voisey is elected, the very integrity of the judiciary is at risk . . . along with the future of England.

In the midst of this battle, a famous seer is murdered after a séance attended by three prominent people . . . including Serracold's wife, Rose.Pitt finds himself heading up that investigation as well, and is himself sorely tested as the safety of his family is put at risk.

For Anne Perry, Southampton Row is unusually full of plot developments while the characters are not as interesting as usual. It is good fun to find the normally imperturbable Pitt at his wit's end.

The book's main drawback is the strain on the reader's credulity brought on by the thought of so many conspiracies with such potential power at stake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting
This was the first of Anne Perry's Victorian mysteries that I have read, and I enjoyed it greatly. She combines historical details with fictional ones to create an excellent combination of history and mystery.

In England, an election is about to take place, which creates tensions between everyone in London. From the streets up to the manor houses in which the wealthy live, no one can talk about anything else. There are two major candidates in the election who stand out: Charles Voisey and Aubrey Serracold, both running on different platforms in different political parties. The bizarre murder of a seance woman in Southampton Row is linked to the election, and it is up to Thomas Pitt to find the killer while at the same time observe the election.

This is a fast-paced book with a lot of political intrigue- its definitely not your typical murder mystery. While Charlotte Pitt, Thomas's wife, is not as present in Southampton Row as she is in other mysteries, the presence of women can be felt, and Perry gives a valuable insight into the lives of women and their position in society in Victorian England. This was a well-written and perceptive novel, and I look forward to reading others in the series. A side note, however: if you are a first-time reader of any of the three series Perry has written, I suggest that you begin with the first book of each- because some of the books discuss things that took place in previous novels. ... Product Description
“I dreamed a dream of angels. I saw them and heard them in a great and endless galactic night. I saw the lights that were these angels, flying here and there, in streaks of irresistible brilliance . . . I felt love around me in this vast and seamless realm of sound and light . . . And something akin to sadness swept me up and mingled my very essence with the voices who sang, because the voices were singing of me . . . ”

Thus begins Anne Rice’s lyrical, haunting new novel, a metaphysical thriller of angels and assassins that once again summons up dark and dangerous worlds set in times past. Anne Rice takes us to other realms, this time to the world of fifteenth-century Rome, a city of domes and rooftop gardens, rising towers and crosses beneath an ever-shifting layer of clouds; familiar hills and tall pines . . . of Michelangelo and Raphael, of the Holy Inquisition and of Leo X, second son of a Medici, holding forth from the papal throne . . .

And into this time, into this century, Toby O’Dare, former government assassin, is summoned by the angel Malchiah to solve a terrible crime of poisoning and to search out the truth of a haunting by an earthbound restless spirit—a diabolical dybbuk.

O’Dare soon discovers himself in the midst of dark plots and counterplots surrounded by a darker and more dangerous threat as the veil of ecclesiastical terror closes in around him.

As he embarks on a powerful journey of atonement, O’Dare is reconnected with his own past, with matters light and dark, fierce and tender, with the promise of salvation and with a deeper and richer vision of love.

2-0 out of 5 stars thin
I used to be a fan of Anne Rice's darker novels - the vampire series, the Mayfair witches series, and others.I have probably read 12 or more of those books. In those days, a common device was to have stories within stories - often going back in time, sometimes very far back. Her books were characterized by dark passion, violence, horror, as well as an exploration of thoughts and feelings of her characters.

Most fans are aware of the major change to her novels a few years ago, as she took on Christian themes instead.Actually, she had been moving that way for some time, for example when Lasher met Memnoch the Devil in the 5th book of the Vampire Chronicles.I found that book fascinating as she mixed in some religious themes.

Somehow I never was all that interested in her books after the big change, but I had an opportunity to read and review this one through the Vine program, so I gave it a try.

Some things have not changed. She still has stories within stories within stories, going back into the past. She still has supernatural creatures - plenty of angels, and in this book, a ghost. She still gets into a lot of descriptive detail for the places we visit. And we still have plenty of insight into the thoughts and feelings of the characters.

One thing that is very different is that formerly dark character Toby McDare has given up his evil ways and dedicated himself in the service of God.His redemption has made him passionately happy - he frequently weeps with joy.Personally, I can't relate to this, and a lot of pages are spent on this subject, which I find tiresome at best.

Another major change is how short this book is.The Witching Hour had several books within it of the length of this one - it was a very long book.In my edition this book had less than 170 pages with plenty of white space. It seems very thin in terms of its story line compared to previous books.

I think this book is the second in a series on "Angel Time".Enough of the context from the first book is at the beginning that it's easy to be involved in the story, and at the end a new character from Toby's past to form a bridge to the next book.I won't be reading the sequel.

Bottom line: I would give this book 2 1/2 stars if I could.I wanted to like it, and I feel like I gave it a chance with an open mind.I gave it a couple of days to decide whether to give 2 or 3 stars overall, but in the end I feel disappointed: I know that Anne Rice is (or was) capable of delivering much better books than this, and I hoped for more here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Rice Fan
Anne Rice's Of Love and Evil, Songs of the Seraphim continues, the second in the new series of angels and assassins set in dark and dangerous worlds that is told in our time and in centuries past.Toby O'Dare, former government assassin , heis summoned by the angel Malchiah to fifteenth-century Rome to solve a terrible crime of poisoning and to uncover the secrets of an earthbound restless spirit. His objective is to calm this restless spirit. As the story continues Toby is soon reconnected with his own past.Toby is a post-traumatic stress disorder survivor from his childhood where his mother slaughtered his brother.Due to his past makes him perfect for his mission, a vigilante who dispenses justice; he is a time traveler, and he is set to rid the world of horror. You must read the first in the series (Angel Time, 2009). It sets the stage for this sequel.

I have always been a big fan of Anne Rice and own every book she has ever written, her Vampire Chronicles, the Witches, she is an amazing storyteller. She combines her Catholicism, her fictional takes on the Gospel, and her passion for the dark side. This is a must for all Anne Rice fans, and if you have never read Anne Rice this is a great new series to get started with.
Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing for a mystery/thriller
My spouse has read this book and gives her opinion:

I really did not enjoy this book. I found the whole thing repetitive, unbelievable, and disconnected with any sense of reality. It's not the fantasy part of the thing.I'm a big fan of fantasy and love immersing myself in imaginary worlds and situations. It was the characters and the story itself that fell flat. The plot was ill-thought out and totally predictable, which is a bad thing for a book that is supposed to be a mystery or thriller. The characters were plastic. Any emotions they display seem to be thrust upon them by the author, and not coming from within themselves...like puppets. I especially had a hard time with the love interest, Liona. For a woman who had been dumped, while pregnant with Toby's child, and abandoned for 10 years, she was inexplicably placid towards him when they reunited. And their little boy, Toby, who had never known his father, is completely loving and trusting as if they had never been apart. I can understand someone being forgiving about a difficult situation, but to show no emotion whatsoever over events that would send most people over the edge in despair is just ridiculous. That Anne Rice expects us to believe any of it is beyond comprehension.I made it as far as the first part of Toby's little adventure in Mediaval Italy, but finally put the book down. I just couldn't take it any more. This is the first time I have ever read anything by Anne Rice. If this is in any way representative of her work, I will not be reading anything by her again any time soon.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not her best
I adore Anne Rice, but this one left me a little in the dark.First off, Rice typically writes super detailed, lengthy, poetic tomes and this was not quite it.It should be touted as a novella. It lacked Rice's typical depth and eye for detail.Don't get me wrong, Anne Rice could write a phone book beautifully and her prose is not lacking here.

It was obvious to me that I was missing something, as I had not read the previous book in this (and I hate to say it) "series." I was thrown off a little by this, but the plot seemed to revolve around angel intervention in human lives. It could have been so much more.I missed Rice's ability to tell you everything about a character in such a way that I feel like I know them.I missed the details in general.I was expecting an interesting well researched book that takes place in late 1400s in Italy--- I would have hardly known the book takes plaace in Italy at all. Truthfully, there was not enough conflict either. While I get the "Christian literature" slant, there is a LOT of conflict in Christianityand ideology, but where was it hiding?

Over all, a good book, but lacked Rice's illuminating sparkle.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second in the series...
Having read the first novel in this series, I was thrilled to read this one. This is the second novel in a planned series by Anne Rice, who in recent years has reconnected with her Catholic upbringing. She has written a series, which I have not read yet, about Jesus. And now she is creating a series about angels and absolution. The first book in the series bears a bit of a hokey title, that isn't so hokey once you learn what the story is about - Angel Time. Of the two books in the series that I have read now, the first one was definitely the best.

Of Love and Evil picks up where Angel Time left off. We are immersed in the life, longing, and regrets of Toby O'Dare, a reformed contract killer. Shortly into the story, Toby reconnects with the girlfriend of his former life and the son they share - one that he was unaware of until the angel told him that he had a son. He knows he is needed for another mission for the angel Malchiah and has his reunion cut short by the mission. Just as he had been thrust back in time in Angel Time, he is again thrust back in time to work hard to right a great wrong. This one seems insurmountable, creating a truly suspenseful tale.

I'm not entirely sure what genre this book fits into. Perhaps fantasy? Given some of the fantasy reading I have read recently, I can see that it can be flexible genre that doesn't just involve elves, fairies, vampires, and sword play. It can also involve stories of the bizarre and supernatural with roots in the present. This story most definitely fits the latter.

This story was an excellent and suspenseful tale. Beautifully created by Anne Rice, who gives description without inundating the reader with it - subtle description brought this story to life. This book would appeal to anyone who likes well written fiction be it contemporary or fantasy. It has earned keeper status on my shelf. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring and plotless
I read this book when it first came out, and I read it again recently and it doesn't get any better as I age.It is boring and has no plot.Oh and someone should tell Ms Rice the word is spelled "Muslim", not "Moslem".

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent read
After being disappointed by 'Violin', I gave this book a try. Thankfully, it proved to be better than the other book. It's not on par with the Vampire Chronicles, but is a decent and satisfying read, whether for the Anne Rice fan or for someone just looking for a good read. The story is interesting (the past story of Azriel and the present one of Belkin, his cult, and the surrounding events) and I actually liked this. I wouldn't quite give it a four, but it deserves better than 3, but unfortunately you cannot choose half-stars. My personal rating for this book is 3.5/5 stars for a entertaining and interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!!!
I will only say that this book grabbed a hold of me and made me feel as if though I WAS the main character and I found myself feeling his feelings, his joy, his pain. I found myself holding back tears as I read of his horrible death and many trials. I am left with an undeniable feeling that Anne Rice has been gifted with such an amazing talent, a gift from God!

Thanks Anne!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars It's time to hang it up, Anne...
Don't get me wrong- I think Anne Rice has done some brilliant writing. Unfortuntely, I don't think this book falls into that category. What Rice accomplishes in 387 pages could have been done in 50.There is a lot of repetition, fluff, and long rambling stream-of-conscious type writing here that is frustrating at best, confusing at worst.Pass.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader
This is a version of the whole genii in the bottle story.Azriel is one of that sort of supernatural entity, and grows more and more cantankerous and nasty over the years, leading him to be imprisoned over the centuries. His name, of course, is supposed to suggest his demonic nature.

He ends up being awakened in modern New York, and becomes involved with a murder, and a history professor that learns his story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laughs for the entire family
We just received this book and already have been having a lot of fun with it! The jokes are appropriate for an entire family - even young children will find many of the jokes funny. Some of the jokes just make you smile, while others make you laugh til it hurts. My kids (ages 8, 10, and 12) enjoy telling jokes and they have been reading through this book on a daily basis to find new favorites. My youngest enjoys the play on words the most - for example, "How do you put a baby astronaut to sleep?"(Rocket).Or "What did the baby light bulb say to its mother?"(I wuv you watts and watts). The book is broken down into different categories/chapters, so you can find jokes and riddles easily. Overall, I think this is a fun book to have around the house for kids to peruse.

4-0 out of 5 stars Count on more than 3650 laughs!
You can count on more laughs than there are jokes and riddles in this bountiful collection, as you'll want to tell each funny and punny joke over and over again (and scoring a guaranteed laugh each and every time). The jokes and riddles are refreshingly family-friendly, yet they will bring howls of laughter from toddlers and geezers, as well as people of all other ages. Get ready for a knee-slapping good time whether you read this alone, with friends, or even to strangers. Enjoy! ... Read more

Product Description
Anne Rice, bestselling author of The Vampire Chronicles, now delves into the mysterious legend of the mummy in this original and poetic tale of romance and horror.

It begins in the early 1900's when archaeologist Lawrence Stratford discovers a perfectly preserved mummy in a tomb in Cairo. Little does he know that the mummy, one Ramses the Great, a.k.a. Ramses the Damned, has consumed an extraordinary potion that makes him immortal; only the powerful rays of the sun are needed to bring him to life. Transported to London, the mummy dispenses with his wrap and takes on a human guise. As Reginald Ramsey, he immediately captures the heart of Stratford's daughter, Julie, who is privy to his unnatural secret but can't resist his stunning good looks. All goes well until Reginald comes across Cleopatra, his long-lost love, under glass in a museum. Unable to bear the sight of this once-glorious Queen now on gruesome display, he decides to bring her back to life...a decision he will live forever-to regret.

The ancient world collides with the modern one in Anne Rice's richly erotic yet sentimental love story that resonates with the macabre.

Michael York made his film debut in 1966 opposite Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in Taming Of The Shrew. The well-known actor has since appeared in many movies, including Cabaret and Murder on the Orient Express. His extensive television credits include the CBS miniseries SPACE, an ABC After School Special Are You My Mother? for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award, and a series of guest appearance on CBS's Knots Landing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment
I'd found Servant of the Bones (Mass Market Paperback) in my university library and had enjoyed it greatly, so I thought I'd let Anne Rice entertain me again with a book about one of my greatest interests, Egypt. She didn't.

Because of the settings and locations--early 1900s London and Egypt--and the characters--a murdered British archeologist and the main character, his Edwardian daughter--I kept thinking (or hoping) I was reading an Elizabeth Peters novel. But I every time I thought it, I was reminded that it sadly wasn't by the utter badness that was everywhere in this book. There was the badness of the writing, the characterization, the story, and probably other things that I can't even remember anymore. It was basically a romance novel.

3-0 out of 5 stars just okay, especially for Rice, spoilers
the wrong man was killed early on leaving us with a truly lousy villain to deal with for most of the novel. The heroine is apparently in her mid twenties and has never had sex and holds out against the eon old pharoah love god for way too long.her inner dialogues on should she or shouldn't she are very annoying.the introduction of cleopatra was completely unnecessary and throws any sense of morality out the window as the confused damaged creature goes on a murder spree including the villain in a most unsatisfying fashion.the miracle potion is far too powerful to contemplate in any meaningful way.on the bright side the female lust is entertaining and Anne's picture on the back cover is pretty sexy

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!
It has been along time since I read this book but it is one of my favorites!I highly recommend this read.In my opinion Anne Rice took the one monster who was a bit boring and never did much and turned it into a character as facinating and debonair as Count Dracula! She has done an excellent job of mixing romance and horror together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful read
At 4.5/5 stars, the Mummy stands out as one of Ms. Rice's best standalone novels, and is even better than some of her Vampire books (the later ones, anyway) The read is entertaining and the characters are fluid. Not everyone might like this book, but the descriptions have the flair Ms. Rice used to have before her novels started to go sour (around Blackwood Farm/Blood Canticle) and I definitely loved reading this book. I would give this book a perfect 5 stars if Ms. Rice had gone through with her message at the end of this book and made a sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love My Mummy
I don't know why they never made a movie out of this book.I honestly believe that this is one of the bestest books I ever, ever read.I actually read it about four times before the cover fell off. ... Read more

Product Description
A king torn between two women could lead to a kingdom torn.

Troubled by religious unrest in his kingdom and changing alliances with other countries, weighing most on King Henry VIII of England's mind is his impending divorce to Queen Katherine of Aragon. The matter is of extreme urgency, as the king desires an heir and has just met the woman who holds his destiny -- Lady Anne Boleyn, eighteen and in the flower of youthful beauty. But was their meeting by chance, or part of a plan devised by her father for the furthering of his family?

As the new romance blooms, it causes heartache for the queen and headaches for the king's personal chaplain, Cardinal Wolsey, who once worked on behalf of the kingdom to organize diplomatic talks, but now toils to obtain the Church's approval for the king's divorce. As loyalties are questioned and the Church's influence is threatened by the emboldened king, the fate of the kingdom lies in the balance.

An irresistible story of love, lust, ambition, and political intrigue, this novelization of season one of The Tudors introduces us to a young, virile king of one of the most powerful nations in the world, and the women who will cause him to forever alter the course of history. ... Read more

this was a fair read.. but left me thinking more was fiction than history. probably a good thing asmuch has been written about henry and his women. .this book did make him and his people more lifelike than most.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great show, capivating novel
If you love the Showtime show The Tudors, then you should read this book. It is a historical fiction novel based on (and sometimes is word for word) from the first season of The Tudors. It is provocative and captivating, just like the show. It's a quick read so it's a great beach read or for when you want to escape for awhile.

If you are not a fan of the show or have never seen it but are interested in historical fiction or novels based off of shows or movies, then you will probably like this book.

This is a pretty good book, nothing too deep or thought provoking but it is interesting and does give you a sense of what Henry VIII was like and Anne Boleyn. ... Read more

Amazon.com Review
The ornate, casket-like packaging and neogothic graphic designof this immortal trilogy is eerily enticing on its own. But just liftthe lid, slide the first tape from its ghostly sleeve, and you'll soonembrace the hypnotic realm of the undead.

Book 1, Interview withthe Vampire, opens with the seductive purr of F. Murray Abraham(Amadeus) stating, "I was a 25-year-old man when I became avampire, and the year was 1791." And so our ultimate antihero, Louis, begins the elaborate retelling of his long, tortured life as avampire. Winding through the ages, from New Orleans to Paris, wefollow Louis and his undying mentor, Lestat, as they feed on humans, whet their carnal appetites, and uncover an underworld of vampirebrethren.

Book 2, The Vampire Lestat, brings us up to date, with Lestat waking from his earthen slumber to join the ranks of rocksuperstardom before sitting down to share the tale of his own hauntinginitiation into the vampire world. Michael York (Cabaret) putshis wonderfully fluid, cosmopolitan voice to good use, adding a dashof sly humor to this fast-paced, satisfying blend of sex and blood androck and roll.

Book 3, The Queen of the Damned, takes usback, all the way back to ancient Egypt, exposing the origins of thevampire way. Narrating in eerily serene and gracious tones, KateNelligan (The Prince of Tides) leads us gently down this bloodypath of immortal desires. David Purdham gives the voice of Lestat awistful quality, tinged with an evil relish that exposes the mastervampire's sanguine tastes.

Anne Rice has continued her VampireChronicles beyond these three novels, but that shouldn't make thiscollection any less tempting to either the undead initiate orcertified vampire junkie. --George Laney ... Read more

This was a christmas present for someone which I had recieved a used appearing book with the binding broken in when I had paid for a new one. The problem was addressed with a refund promptly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent books but recording is abridged.
All the positive reviews of these three Vampire Chronicles state the absolute truth about the books. AND about the unabridged recording of the Interview with the Vampire book that is NOT included in this set.

What people fail to mention about this set is that each book is reduced to only 2 hours of reading time each. The original Interview book was recorded on 13 CDs (that means Interview was recorded on 13 CDs for approximately 15 hours of unabridged story, versus 2 hours on these cassettes.)

How can you possibly do justice to these books in 1/8th of the time? That is only 1/8th of an incredibly rich story.

Just say no to this and read the book for yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vampire Books You'll Ever Read
The three books in this volume are all AMAZING, and I'm proud to say that they are some of, if not my favorite books. They have so much substance to them, so much complexity and emotion. I haven't felt nearly as emotional while reading a book as I did while reading these. The characters dig into your heart and stay there forever.
Out of the three, I might say I liked "Queen of the Damned" the best, but only because there were just so many happy reunions and I loved how it had a nice, clean ending.. (Why, oh why couldn't it stop there?) I liked "The Vampire Lestat" too, a close second. "Interview with the Vampire" was just as good, but I have to say Lestat is a much more fun narrator. Lestat and Louis have got to be my favorite fictional characters of all time. Oh, I just love them both so much, I could go on forever! Their relationship is so tragically adorable.
This is a superb trilogy, with a solid ending. I laughed and I cried. They made me think, and I found so much inspiration in them. I will forever treasure them!
A note on this edition: I think it's perfect. In my opinion, the three books included in this are the only ones worth reading. :P

5-0 out of 5 stars Three of the Greatest Vampire Novels Ever Written.
The Vampire Chronicles Vol.I holds three of Anne Rice's great vampiric masterpieces behind it's covers.

Interview With The Vampire tells the story of Louis, a plantation master outside of New Orleans who after the death of his brother spirals into depression. Enter the vampire Lestat who offers him the 'Dark Gift' of immortality and issues him forth into the world eternal life and unending hunger.

The Vampire Lestat, the second book, finds Lestat awoken in the modern era by the sound of 80's rock. Lestat takes over a band and uses his music to summon forth some old lovers and deadly enemies while telling the tale of how he came to be.

Queen of the Damned, the final book, finds Lestat and his immortal companions up against the mother of the vampires, Akasha. Told through the eyes of the ancients and newly turned vampires alike, Queen of the Damned chronicles the beginning of the vampire race and the clash against a Queen who would devour all of mankind.

A must have for all vampire fans!

Product Description
In this revealing autobiography, Canada’s first lady of song, for the first time, tells the whole story of her astonishing 40-year career in show biz. It is a candid retrospective of the extraordinary success achieved, and the prices that had to be paid.

“After ‘Snowbird’ hit, I was swept up like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, and catapulted into a strange new universe … If I thought for a moment that I was really in control of events, I was deluded.” Anne Murray

An unflinching self-portrait of Canada’s first great female recording artist, All of Me documents the life of Anne Murray, from her humble origins in the tragedy-plagued coal-mining town of Springhill, Nova Scotia, to her arrival on the world stage. Anne recounts her story: the battles with her record companies over singles and albums; the struggle with drug- and alcohol-ridden band members; the terrible guilt and loneliness of being away from her two young children; her divorce from the man who helped launch her career, Bill Langstroth; and the deaths of two of her closest confidantes. The result is a must-read autobiography by Canada’s beloved songbird.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Murray's Story
Anne Murray's voice has provided enjoyment to millions for many years. That crystal-clear voice that Rosemary Clooney once said could hit the note "smack dab in the middle" is instantly recognizable. However, Murray says, "for all the talent I had, I doubt that the arc of my career would have been the same without the unpredictable blessing of enormous good fortune."

What was that good fortune? How did the only girl of five children raised in a small town in Nova Scotia grow up to be one of the most popular and recognized vocalists in the world? All of Me, which she wrote with Michael Posner, provides the answers to these questions. The book is structured as a biography, but the elements of a memoir come through because Murray is very forthcoming about her own feelings. And though she wrote the book with the help of an award-winning journalist and playwright, her voice is strong and clear.

Murray traces her career from her childhood up to the last concert. She didn't start out to be a celebrity, but because of her love of singing--a need to sing--each step she made took her further along that path. And it was at times a difficult one that cost her both in her relationship with her husband and with her children. But it also brought her satisfaction and joy to know that she could entertain an audience.

Through Murray's experiences we learn much about the record industry of her era and what was required to be successful. Murray didn't follow the norm; she didn't move to California. Even so, she was able to sell fifty-four million records and earned many awards, including four Grammies.

Murray's voice did not require the high-tech tools available to vocalists today to make them sound better. She explains it by saying, "...my achievement also testifies to a simple but enduring truth: there is ultimately no substitute for good singing, honestly rendered."

Anne Murray fans will enjoy meeting the person behind that wonderful voice, and will put the book down feeling that they have spent some quality time with her.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true fan will truely love it!
I have loved Anne Murray's music since growing up in the '70's & '80's and reading this book made me love her all the more. Her autobiography gave me a much greater since of who she really is since she is one to value her privacy. She comes across as a genuine person who actually is not self absorbed by giving credit to so many others who helped her along the way and recognizes other artists and technicians for their outstanding talents and skills.

It has many laugh out loud stories and puts her family and growing up years right up front, which makes it all the more personal and real.Anne never gets nasty toward anyone even if one should deserve it.Her book as a whole brings out her warm, down to earth personality that makes her so unique from all those other "Starlet Divas" who are at the center of their own universes. She is a regular person with an enormous amount of talent and now I'm going to buy more of her CD's and DVD's.

I'm holing on to my copy because someday Anne Murray is going to sign it herself for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fan of Snowbird
This is a great book for fans and non-fans of Anne Murray. She is thorough and candid about her life. What a wonderful entertainer and a wonderful bio. I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics maps the ethical landscape of contemporary nursing.

The book is the product of a collaboration between philosopher-ethicist Michael Yeo, nurse-ethicist Anne Moorhouse, and six representatives of various areas of professional nursing. It thus combines philosophical and ethical analysis with nursing knowledge and experience in a manner that is both understandable and relevant.

The book is organized around six main concepts in nursing ethics: beneficence, autonomy, confidentiality, truth-telling, justice, and integrity.A chapter is devoted to the elucidation of each of these concepts. In each chapter, historical background and conceptual analysis are supplemented by case studies that exemplify issues and show how the concept applies in nursing practice.

In this new edition, the materials in each chapter have been updated to reflect recent developments in nursing and more generally in health care.In addition, a totally new chapter on ethical theory has been added.

Complete with bibliographies and study questions for further analysis of cases, this book is ideally suited for textbook use.It will help both practitioners and students to deal better with the clinical problems and issues that are encountered in the field. However, it's simple prose and clear exposition of complex issues will make Concepts and Cases in Nursing Ethics attractive to anyone concerned about health care. ... Product Description

This detailed and engaging account of Austen's life and work is arranged as a series of walking tours through the towns and countryside she knew and loved—the settings for her novels. This book introduces the people she met on her journeys and explores the country houses, churches, great estates, and elegant cities she knew, which have changed surprisingly little in the course of two centuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Austen Book Best Ever

This survey of the places where Jane Austen lived and visited and worked is by far the best of the various ones similar. There have been attempts to guide visitors to the various sites before, but none as good or successful or carefully researched as this one. I have bought several copies as gifts for others whom I know would enjoy this travelogue. It is most highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars boring
The pictures are not enough. Especially those about the houses which Jane and her family lived in. The words are quite boring. It is more suitable to be categorized as a tour guide rather than a book introducing Jane Austen's England. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the money...
My daughter loves to read & loves Britney Spears but this book was a big let down! It's a very small book with minimal writing on each page. I buy lots of books from Amazon.com but this is one I would definately not buy again! The author went skimpy on the workmanship to write this book. I would pass this one up, there are much better Britney books for sale.

3-0 out of 5 stars More Like Britney Spears Rumors
This book is mostly made of rumors or news selections about Britney Spears. The book is in black and white and includes no pictures which was dissapointing. The book is good though, some of the facts/rumors I haven't ever heard about. The book it self is really small. It can fit in your pocket. The book was overall okay but it wasn't the best.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book was ok
This was ok, it had some good pictures but I knew a lot of the information already. What got it three stars was the pics. Some of them were quite good ones that I hadn't seen before. Overall this book was boring except for the pics.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is OK
This is not a very good book on Britney Spears. The information is "I already knew that" kind of stuff. Your best bet on Britney Spears books is her new book Heart to Heart that Britney co-wrote with her mother, Lynne.

2-0 out of 5 stars Small but good!
I am a fan of Britney Spears. I am always looking for a new book on her. Ifound this book and thought it would be good. When I first got it I wasvery disappointed because it was very small (pocket size). But,it hasreallygood information. It has really good pictures. It has good personalinformation to it. I hopeyouenjoythisbook as much as i did.Tara Leddon ... Read more
