This book has become a primary reference and is much referred in scientific papers. The chapters by different authors broadly discuss the topic old-growth. My favorite chapters were "A Native American Perspective" and the regional chapters. The regional chapters have been written from different perspectives according to writers' speciality: Chapter 10 (Southern New England, New York and Pennsylvania) concentrates on early old-growth studies and old-growth areas; chapters 11 (Great Lakes) and 12 (Central Mesophytic Forests) discuss disturbance types and succession; 13 (oak and oak-hickory forests) discuss old-growth definitions applicable to the oak and oak-hickory forests; 14 (Southeastern Wetlands) has been written from the personal perspective of a conservationist; 15 (Longleaf Pine Forests) describes fire interactions of the original, now almost totally disappeared, Pinus palustris forests, but also includes a table of all known old-growth areas. Different authors also define the term "old-growth" differently. This "non-homogenousness" is not a downside but makes the book still richer.

There are some minor weaknesses. Chapter "Extent and Location" could be more precise. Now it often mentions only "10,000 acre XXXXX State Forest includes 2,000 acres of old-growth" without telling where the old-growth exactly is. Or still better, there could be a chapter "Visiting Eastern Old-Growth Forests". I consider the visitor perspective an important point, and the book also emphasize spiritual values of old-growth. For the Northeast there is "The Sierra Club Guide to the Ancient Forests of the Northeast" by Kershner & Leverett but for many other regions there are no guide books. A few color pictures of the most important parks would be nice. For the readers not familiar with the eastern North American flora, there should be a table of common and scientific names at the end of the book, as all the writers do not mention scientific names.

I recommend this book to all forest lovers regardless of home country.

Nothing to Admire argues for the persistence of a central tradition of poetic satire in English that extends from Restoration England to present-day America. This tradition is rooted in John Dryden's and Alexander Pope's uses of Augustan metaphor to criticize the abuse of social and political power and to promote an antithetical ideal of satiric authority based on freedom of mind. Because of their commitment to neoclassical conceptions of political virtue, the British Augustans developed a meritocratic cultural ideal grounded in poetic judgment and opposed to the political institutions and practices of their superiors in birth, wealth, and might. Their Augustanism thus gives a political meaning to the Horatian principle of nil admirari. This book calls the resulting outlook cultural liberalism in order to distinguish it from the classical liberal insistence on private property as the basis of political liberty, a conviction that arises within the same general period and often stands in adversarial relation to the Augustan mentality.

Dryden and Pope's language of political satire supplies the foundation for the later and more radical liberalisms of Lord Byron, W.H. Auden, and James Merrill, each of whom looks back to the Augustan model for the poetic devices he will use to protest the increasingly conformist culture of mass society. Responding to the banality of this society, the later poets reinvigorate their predecessors' neo-Horatian attitude of skeptical worldliness through iconoclastic comic assaults on the imperial, fascist, heterosexist, and otherwise illiberal impulses of the cultural regimes prevailing during their lifetimes. ... Whether looming over public squares or dotting old battlefields, monuments certify a culture’spresent by securing its past and pledging its future. They embody exemplary persons or events and the shared ideals they stood for, prompting an obligation to keep those ideals standing now and forever. But monuments also exaggerate the staying power of civilizations and of art. In the second half of the twentieth century, postmodern critics often decried monuments not only for their pretensions and stiffness but also for their supposed role in perpetuating oppressive cultural conventions. Even so, many artists and thinkers of the same period tried to reimagine monuments in ways that were humbler and more provisional but still culturally confirming.

In Castings, Guy Rotella examines the work of five important poets who have engaged in that effort: Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, James Merrill, Derek Walcott, and Seamus Heaney.
