About the Author

Guy de Maupassant (1850 - 1893)
Henri Rene Albert Guy de Maupassant (pronounced) (5 August 1850 - 6 July 1893) was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. As a protege of Flaubert, his short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless denouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught, emerge changed - many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s.

Maupassant was most likely born at the Chateau de Miromesnil, near Dieppe in the Seine-Inferieure (now Seine-Maritime) department. The Maupassants were an old Lorraine family who had settled in Normandy in the middle of the 18th century. In 1846 his father had married Laure Le Poittevin. With her brother Alfred, she had been the playmate of the novelist Gustave Flaubert, who was destined to have a guiding influence on her son's life. She was a woman of no common literary accomplishments, very fond of the classics, especially Shakespeare. After separating from her husband, Le Poittevin kept her two sons, the elder Guy and younger Herve. (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Imaginative and "mundane" ,then and now.
Guy De Maupassant hit a chord and in its delivery he left nothing too far fetched. All of his "stories" were "cloned" from actual everyday common ocurrences. He knew that reality was stranger than fiction, all he had to do was to pass it on, with the well seasoned ingredients of someone that had not ever lived a dull moment. He was from Normandy, my ancestors birthplace in France and I in my puberty gained access to my father's "private library" and the literary works by such an author, using a screwdriver to pick the locks, that is why I had to read the English translations to check on its contents and refresh my memory with those wonderful stories, yet said book is now in the hands of those who's failed to treasure it. ... Very poor photocopy edition
This "edition" of La Maison Tellier is quite literally a photocopy of a copy of the book from one of Oxford's libraries.The production quality is very low, and it is not a properly printed book.The paper is cheap, as is the cover.The photocopied pages are crooked. I do not view this as a proper book.

Réaliste et émouvant
Dans ce recueil de nouvelles, Guy de Maupassant peint dans des couleurs riches mais très contrastées des sentiments intenses et des explosions d'émotions, basés sur des impulsions sexuelles, l'instinct de possession ou de pouvoir. Elles évoquent par des scènes très vivantes, réalistes et émouvantes, des réminiscences, des regrets, des occasions manquées, des rencontres furtives, des frustrations, des règlements de comptes ou des trahisons. En même temps, elles exposent férocement l'hypocrisie moraliste de la bourgeoisie.

La maison Tellier : une prostituée est invitée à la première communion de sa nièce.

Dans `Les tombales', une femme cherche des amants dans un cimetière.

Dans `Sur l'eau', un bateau bute sur le corps d'une femme noyée.

Dans l `Histoire d'une fille de ferme', une mère célibataire essaie de devenir patronne d'une ferme.

`En famille' décrit les soubresauts d'une bataille pour un héritage.

Dans `Le papa de Simon', un enfant d'une mère célibataire cherche un père.

Dans `Une partie de campagne' (mis à l'écran par Jean Renoir) l'auteur peint le contraste entre une première rencontre amoureuse et la vie après le mariage.

`Au printemps': avec le retour du printemps, les citoyens français doivent prendre garde à l'amour.

Dans `La femme de Paul', une femme a une relation lesbienne. Comment réagira le mari ?

This is one of my favorite stories. It details the trip of a group of brothel prostitues on holiday for the first communion of the Madam's niece. In the course of the story, it highlights both the virtues of the prostitutes and the corrupt morals of the general public, thus exposing the hypocrisy of burgeoisie society. Bel Ami - a nice read....in English
This is a pretty interesting story which develepes at a pace the modern reader will appreciate.It does not get bogged down too much in the preciousity of the era.Note, though, this one's in English, not French.
