Product Description
... Read more

First published in 1888, Sur l'Eau is arranged like a journal and constitutes an intimate foray into Maupassant's thoughts: I wrote this journal of day-dreams for myself alone, or rather I took advantage of my solitude afloat to halt the wandering ideas that cross our minds like birds."" There are few great books about sailing on pleasure boats, but this is definitely one of them. This edition also contains three previously unpublished translations of articles by Maupassant and includes a selection of Rioui's elegant, delicate drawings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beguiling trip with Guy de Maupassant
I have just reread with great pleasure Guy de Maupassant's compact logbook Afloat, which purports to chronicle nine days aboard his yacht Bel-Ami in spring 1887, as he and his two-man crew set sail from Antibes. However, the title is a bit misleading as, thanks to the weather, Maupassant spends more time ashore than afloat. However, the 100-page memoir actually takes place neither at sea nor on land but in the fertile consciousness of the famed writer, where his musings and ironic commentary drift beguilingly from French history to Parisian society, from architecture to death; from tuberculosis to war, from mobocracy to friendship. But always built on a foundation of enchanting and evocative descriptions of nature--the sea, the sky, the wind, the mountains, and the land.

Afloat enables a rare, direct connection with the author for fans of Maupassant, like me. Over the years I have read and reread all his hundreds of short stories in translation, often keeping an anthology bedside. In the past year I read for the first time his 1885 novel Bel-Ami (his yacht's namesake), which compares favorably with other noted 19th century young-provincial-seeks-fortune-in-Paris novels: Stendhal's The Red and the Black (1830), Flaubert's A Sentimental Education (1869) and, my favorite, Balzac's Père Goriot (1834). However, in Maupassant's voluminous short fiction, the author per se is seldom visible (though Bel-Ami is seemingly autobiographic to large degree.) He writes with a sharp eye and keen ear not only of Parisian society but also of provincial petite bourgeoisie, peasants, and sportsmen, always with clarity and heart but sans sentimentality, and always focused on the consciousnesses of his characters and, at times, his narrator, not of the author. So here, in Afloat, we glimpse Guy on a busman's holiday of sorts: a writer still writing but without the curtain of form and story that generally conceals him.

Thus we get here from Maupassant a very funny description of royalty worship in Cannes, both cynicism and lyricism as his moods swing with the weather and his migraines, a vicious indictment of war, and a penetrating exposé of the tortures of being a hypersensitive fiction writer who views and catalogues life solely as source material. We find thoughtful digressions on peasants, love, land speculation, friendship, and the perils of office work. Along the way we also come to appreciate his considerable good sense, his iconoclastic wisdom and his well-wrought credo. We get to know him as a man as well as an author, sharing with him a fortifying voyage I will likely take again.

Also worthwhile here is the informative introduction (best read, liked most introductions, after reading the book) by translator Douglas Parmée. His 2008 English rendering of Sur l'eau captures Maupassant's subtle wit, informality and directness of expression that often escaped earlier translators of his work.

1-0 out of 5 stars Afloat
I read a review in the monthly magazine from Boat US that indicated a good nautical read. This book was a bummer on wheels. Too heavy, the author wrote it and then killed himself by not treating a case of syfiliis. hit yourself repeatedly with a hammer, you would have more fun

5-0 out of 5 stars From rant to poetry
Slim book of essays written during a sailing journey, the tone ranges from beautiful, poetic descriptions of the ocean, weather, islands, and coastlines to--at the drop of a hat--hilarious rants against humanity. Imagine a colicky Thoreau and you've got the idea. Well worth the journey: sharply observed sketches of our world a century ago but as timely and accurate in its depictions of human conflict as anything written today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Afloat
As a sailor I read this little book like reading a yacht's log book. The device is fresh and alive. Much of how he wrote it captures the feeling of being with him on that yacht with the wind taking Guy, you and a wide range of thoughts anywhere on a whim. You are always brought back to the "Bel-Ami" itself to move forward-book as yacht. It has been said that to understand the French you had to read Guy de Maupassant. Well, to understand the spirit of the sailing life it doesn't hurt to read him either.Delightful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional
Maupassant is an exceptional author.I haven't finished the book yet, but I like the quality of his stories. There are so many French, and well as Italian and Russian authors, each with a different style. He is more enjoyable than most.

4-0 out of 5 stars great idea
the dual language book is a great idea, it saves so much time if you want to look up a translation. the drawback is that the translation has to be extremely close to the text, making it less enjoyable to read. thus, it is an excellent book if you plan to read the whole french version, and use the english version for support only.

5-0 out of 5 stars French is Easier Than You Think
Contrary to all silly 19th Century notions of linguistics and Saxon ethnicity, English and French are remarkably similar languages, with over 70% of their vocabularies cognate, and with essentially the same grammar except for the fading conjugations of French. YOU, whoever you are, can learn to read French in a matter of weeks. Note that I didn't say SPEAK French, just read it. If you have Spanish or Italian under your collar, you can read French already but you just don't know it.

These seven stories by Guy de Maupassant represent the author's scope and skill. Maupassant is out of fashion, both in the USA and in France, but his Gallic non-judgemental humanism is still worth encountering. You won't be able to follow the French without a few hours of basic grammar, which you can learn at the computer with the appropriate "Transparent Language" software. But once you can struggle through a single paragraph, you'll be staring at a new world of pleasure in reading. Trust me, French literature is even better than you thought it was from translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful and poignant stories of people in diverse situations
Many of the reviews of this book focus on the fact that it features both French and English. By contrast I will discuss it as a piece of literature.

Guy de Maupassant, along with Anton Chekov and O. Henry, is widely regarded as the best writer of short stories in modern literature. The Classics Library edition of The Best Short Stories provides ample proof of this judgment. A total of 17 stories are presented including his most famous ones (The Necklace, The Piece of String) and perhaps his best (Boule de Soif). But all of these stories are wonderful. They are full of humor, tragedy, satire, love, disappointment, despair, in short the full range of human emotions and experiences are covered by a talented and perceptive writer.

On of the best aspects of the book is the great diversity in the stories. One theme that Maupassant returns to the brutality of war. But this viciousness is shown by its effects on individuals, not in a massive scale. For example, Two Friends tells of two men who enjoy fishing together. In the story their fishing place is under Prussian control and they are arrested and accused as spies. Madamoiselle Fifi relates how war brings out the worst in men. Boule de Suif shows how "respectable" people react to adversity.Depression, despondency and the negative effects of unrequited love are further themes explored by Maupassant. Two Little Soldiers shows what happens when two friends are split by the love of a woman. Madamoiselle Pearl tells a tale of unrecognized and unreturned love. The Olive Orchard treats of what happens when an early discretion comes back to haunt you.Miss Harriet, perhaps the saddest tale of all, tells of a woman who finds fulfillment in nature and then discovers love only to have it come crashing down on her.

But humor also can be found in these stories. That Pig of a Morin pokes good fun at a shopkeeper who commits a sexual faux pax and as a result becomes the butt of jokes among his friends and neighbors. Madame Hussan's "Rosier" tells what can happen when virtue is rewarded.A Sale is a ribald tale in which a husband tries to sell his wife to another man.

The final story, Happiness, is perhaps the most satisfying. It relates a simple story of a young woman of means who gives up wealth and a life of ease for the love of an ordinary peasant and the joys of their long life together.

All in all, these stories will warm your heart and touch your soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bawdy, Fun and Poignant
Years ago, I read A Woman's Life by Guy de Maupassant. I could appreciate it knowing the author had been influenced by Flaubert and Zola. But I didn't find the work quite original or worth the effort.

Recently I began to read his stories, with this collection in particular as my starting point. All I can say is Maupassant is the quintessential master of the shorter tale. His novels and novellas (aside from Bel-Ami) stand in the shadows compared to these wondrous prose pieces. For the longest time I read only novels, finding short stories either too short or unsatisfying. With Guy de Maupassant, every story is satisfying, each the longer ones like "The Horla" and "Boule de Suif".

Whatever the collection, whatever the translation, if you love French literature and literature in general, Guy de Maupassant is worth exploring. He is bawdy, fun, melancholic, as well as surprising. "The Horla" I have discovered finds its way into nineteenth century horror/ghost story collections. Don't pass up the good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the True Masters of Short Fiction
Guy De Maupassant's short stories are peopled with characters that the reader feels an almost immediate connection to. He is a master of characterization and pacing which is so critical to the writing of short fiction. This collection is an excellent introduction to his work with some of the stories standing out more than others although all are worth the time investment requred to digest a story that will typically inspire the reader with thought and reflection.
I don't know if I would agree with other reviewers that he is the best since others, most notably, Chekov have also produced masterpieces of short fiction. Nevertheless the reader's life will be enriched by becoming familiar with de Maupassant and this collection is a fine way to start.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best short stories
I fell across Maupassant's "The Necklace" years ago and have been a fan ever since. Many writers believe that the well crafted short story is the hardest story to write and Maupassant is certainly one of the masters. Many of his stories are well known: "The Necklace," "The Piece of String," and "The Ball of Fat" are standard university faire but this volume brings together about thirty of his best stories. His keen insight and sense of observation make these stories timeless and interesting - you might even see yourself. The writing is surprisingly fresh and readable. A great book to have by the fireside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unequalled World-Class Short Story Writer
Never having taken a world literature class, I discovered Guy De Maupassant many years ago on my own ... to my utter delight! I love his insights into human behavior, his writing technique of emphasizing some human conditon, dilemma, or foible, his ability to contrast the behavior of the wealthy respectable class against the more common people, his humor, and his creative writing style. The reader learns about the lives of people during the 19th century, their cares, concerns, their vices and passions ... and their secrets, the subjects are as varied as life itself!

This volume of 30 short stories is an extremely fine selection of his works. I was familiar with three of the stories, "The Jewels", "The Piece of String" and the most well known titled "Boule De Suif" (translated as "Ball of Fat"). In this famous story, the prostitute of the region of Rouen is traveling with upper class companions in a coach as each traveler assesses the other one, making judgements as human beings often do. Eventually the upper class passengers are hungry, as they eye Boule De Suif opening her basket filled with fried chicken and other delicious foods. Boule De Souif takes compassion on her fellow passengers by offering them some of her food, to their embarrassment and pleasure, assuaging their hunger pangs. We learn a little about the character and background of the passengers, as the author builds his plot ... The passengers became more chummy, a most unusual situation that would not occur in normal everyday life between such different classes. The coach stopped for a rest at an inn. Prussians occupied the town and were staying at the same inn. As circumstances developed, the Prussian officer wanted to speak with Boule De Suif (Madame Elisabeth Rousset) ... she refused, recognizing at once the reason for his summons. The passengers on the coach sensed the tension and attempted pursuading Ms Rousset to join the officer ... they feared bad consequences for themselves if she did not cooperate, despite their disgust toward that sort of activity. They prevalied, Ms Rousset succumbed. The story ended on a sad note ... after "the event", the snobby behavior of the passengers toward Ms Rousset was evident as they reached their destination. They forgot her kindess in sharing her food, her resistance to the advances of the officer (she had pride in resisting the enemy) ... the passengers looked to their own selfish concerns and had no compassion for the sacrifice made by "Boule De Suif" on their behalf. This story exemplifies one of the main reasons the stories of Guy De Maupassant are so popular, in addition to his creative techniques and writing expertise, he contrasts certain extremes of human behavior to make a very strong point which emphasizes the human condition most accurately. These stories will delight a wide-range of readers. Most highly recommended. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5-0 out of 5 stars the undisputed master of the short fiction form
Guy de Maupassant is today considered by most literary historians to be the greatest short story writer who ever lived, in any century. When it comes to just telling a great story, he was the best, couldn't be topped. Both aspiring and established fiction writers should read Maupassant's finest stories to learn or brush up on the basics--plot, pacing, conciseness, character, mood, description, as well as to learn how simple naturalness and clarity of technique are important for writing engaging and readable fiction.

This is a very good selection of some of his most memorable tales. I would also recommend "A Day In The Country and Other Stories", which I believe is the best Maupassant collection available in English.

Maupassant was considered shocking a hundred years ago because he wrote about prostitutes and adultery in frank and unashamed terms. He was ahead of his time in that way. He never wrote a truly great novel, but 50 or 60 of his stories are real classics. Nobody who reads a great Maupassant story will soon forget it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
I simply loved it.A must buy and a great value for your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars The rest of the story...
The story behind the story is that deMaupassant, at the time he wrote Le Horla, was himself going insane, dying of syphilis. So is the horla in the story only in the story, or did deMaupassant actually think that HE saw the creature?Or did he really see the creature...?

1-0 out of 5 stars La Horla
This book is written in French. Since I do not reed this language I am unable to review the book. I am looking for one written in English. You should indicate the language the book is written in before selling. I am giving the book to my local library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely outstanding
It's not for no reason that The Horla is widely regarded as the best horror story ever told. I advise anyone who contemplates reading this to pour themselves a good stiff gin before turning the pages!

The Horla is written in the style of a diary, and is set in a rural area of northern France, near the medieval city of Rouen. The author of the diary is a rich, reclusive gentleman who wants for nothing, and spends most his time and energy contemplating the great philosophical questions of life. He enjoys the simple pleasures of his existence - such as watching ships whizz along the Seine.

The story begins in a happy mood with the diarist full of life and complety content, but as the days pass by he becomes ill. At first he believes the ailment is physical, but it soon becomes apparent that the illness is mental. As strange things begin to happen around him- which can only be explained rationally by his own actions of which he is not aware - the reader is drawn into the mystery that forms the crux of the plot: is he really mad, or are supernatural forces at work?

Maupassant leaves us guessing all the way, and while initially it looks like a clear-cut case of madness, the diarist contemplates other, more terrifying explanations of the bizarre incidents that seem to take place in his house. The story ends in a shocking climax - which I won't spoil by revealing it here!

What makes The Horla the masterpiece that it is, is that it "works" on so many levels. The entries in the diary reveal that the author is completely clear-headed and lucid, and because he admits the possibility of being mad, this gives his later ideas of the supernatural the credibility they need to make the reader think twice about his condition. The horror builds gradually, andmuch of it is left unsaid. The reader is forced to employ a lot of imagination.

This a gem of a tale, and no self-respecting connoisseur of horror worth their salt should go without The Horla on their bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Master of Horror and Terror
We have all heard of Stephen King - but check out Guy De Maupassant. The Horla is probably the greatest short horror story ever written. If you like psychological horror and are looking for a new title or author then I strongly advise you to try the stories of Maupassant. Maupassant (who eventually went insane himsef) knows the real terrors that lurk around us...He's been there...
If you want the ultimate collection of his horror fiction then a 'must-buy' is The Divided Self by the same author. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't ever buy this book
This book is possibly the worst purchase I have made on Amazon. First off, it is erronously advertised: it is nowhere in the ballpark of being the complete works of Maupassant; it is a 220 page text (extra large print) of some of Maupassant's more mediocre short stories, like "Ugly" or "An Artist's Wife."Secondly, the translation is poor: 'Victorianized' for turn-of-the-century bourgeoisie, it reads nothing like Maupassant, and the power of his naturalist prose is all but obliterated.

My advice: stick to the French, or find a newer edition/ translation.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Works of Guy Maupaussant
As other reviewers noted before I bought the book. This is clearly not his complete works.Instead, this book is a bad photocopy of the original apparently. It was not type-set printing as is evidenced by only partial letters at end of full sentences. But, if you want to enjoy the author's writings, then it is a good start

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Works of Guy de Maupassant
True, the book is not the complete works, but hey, at this price it's still a great buy. It is well laid out; there is no bleed through on the pages; it has a Table of Contents. The print is crisp and easy on the eyes.

Ever who titled it as his complete works in 1917 is at fault and dead by now. So chill out.

2-0 out of 5 stars This is NOT the complete works of the Guy de Maupassant
I have no qualms against the Guy de Maupassant or his stories. In fact, he is one of my favorite writers. The reason I gave this only two stars is because of how misleading the title is.When I see the word complete, I expect it to mean that all of his stories are included. There are only 29 stories in this book. Two of my favorites aren't even included--The Necklace, Bellflower. If you want a book that includes all of his stories, as I did, I suggest you look elsewhere.

Product Description
Ranging from poignant scrutiny of social pretension, to wicked tales of lust and love, to harrowing stories of terror and madness, the genius of Guy de Maupassant, France’s greatest short-story writer, is on full display in this enthralling new translation by Joachim Neugroschel. The stories Neugroschel has gathered vividly reveal Maupassant’s remarkable range, his keen eye, his technical perfection, his sexual realism, his ability to create whole worlds and sum up intricate universes of feeling in a few pages.

Adam Gopnik’s Introduction incisively explores the essence of Maupassant’s unique style and his tremendous, if unjustly unacknowledged, influence (on everything from the American short story to contemporary cinema), bearing eloquent testimony to Maupassant’s continuing and vital appeal. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Good
I recently purchased a number of the Dover Thrift Editions of classic works by well-known writers whose work has now lapsed into public domain. One of the most noteworthy is a collection of nine tales by the acclaimed French short story master Guy de Mauppasant, whose tales are lifted from many apparent translators, none of whom are credited- which is a slight disappointment for it would have been nice to see if one or another translator was responsible for the better or worse stories, so to reckon the effect or not translation had on the original tales in French. Many critics have rightly hailed him as a skilled writer, and there is certainly much to admire in these tales. That said, there is also alot that simply is very dated, in terms of character development and plotting. Maupassant is definitely a pre-modern writer, who has far more truck with American O. Henry than the Russian Anton Chekhov, or even other Russian short story writers that predated him. Like O. Henry, Maupassant's tales are fairly predictable and his characters exist merely to tell the story, not as beings upon whom a tale intrudes. Now, both premises can work for a story, but a fully mature and modern story tends not to be merely plot-driven, and only incorporate the O. Henry approach, which often places its whole bevy of eggs in the socko payoff at end, but take the best elements from both approaches, while leaning more toward character exploration- either internally or not....There is a nice tension, in these tales, between sunny optimism and deep pessimism over the human condition, yet the tales are often a Punch And Judy show, as the manner in which such themes are dealt with is all overt. While the lack of complex didacticism hints at the future modern tendencies it sired, none of the tales, at least in this book, fully realizes a complete and human character, and it is not as if Maupassant could not be didactic. The Necklace, in fact, viciously punishes its lead characters for their needless guilt and dishonesty, signs of vanity, in a very heavy-handed way. Here is how it ends, with the protagonist encountering, after a decade of slaving to repay her debt for the diamond necklace she lost, the woman who owned the necklace:

One Sunday, as she had gone for a walk along the Champs-Elysees to freshen herself after the labors of the week, she caught sight suddenly of a woman who was taking a child out for a walk. It was Madame Forestier, still young, still beautiful, still attractive.
Madame Loisel was conscious of some emotion. Should she speak to her? Yes, certainly. And now that she had paid, she would tell her all. Why not?
She went up to her.
`Good morning, Jeanne.'
The other did not recognize her, and was surprised at being thus familiarly addressed by a poor woman.
`But...Madame...' she stammered. `I don't know...you must be making a mistake.'
`No...I am Mathilde Loisel.'
Her friend uttered a cry.
`Oh!...my poor Mathilde, how you have changed!...'
`Yes, I've had some hard times since I saw you last; and many sorrows...and all on your account.'
`On my account!...How was that?'
`You remember the diamond necklace you lent me for the ball at the Ministry?'
`Yes. Well?'
`Well, I lost it.'
`How could you? Why, you brought it back.'
`I brought you another one just like it. And for the last ten years we have been paying for it. You realize it wasn't easy for us; we had no money....Well, it's paid for at last, and I'm glad indeed.'
Madame Forestier had halted.
`You say you bought a diamond necklace to replace mine?'
`Yes. You hadn't noticed it? They were very much alike.'
And she smiled in proud and innocent happiness. Madame Forestier, deeply moved, took her two hands.
`Oh, my poor Mathilde! But mine was imitation. It was worth at the very most five hundred francs!'

Such coincidences do occur in life, and taken as an isolated tale it does not matter, but Maupassant's tales, like those of O. Henry, are best read in small bunches, as this collection has, where the stock manipulations do not get repetitive as a hammer. Read Maupassant, and check out the Dover Books website, but realize the former works best as a curio of a lost time, and not a thing of the now.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Necklace and Other Tales
This book is not up to Modern Library Standards. It contains a meager selection of de Maupassant stories with a rather sophomoric translation into "American idiom". Since this idiom is in a constant state of flux, the new translations are often jarring. ... Read more
