4-0 out of 5 stars Not to be confused with the novel
The above reviewer, whose review has accidentally been posted twice, is confusing this 60-page book by Robert A. Lee with MacLean's novel "Fear Is The Key".

Lee's book is a study on MacLean's style of writing with the majority of it being a deconstruction of, what the author considers MacLean's best novel, "Bear Island". I don't agree with him on that issue, but it is certainly the last great novel he wrote. The novels he punched out from then on pales in comparison to "Bear Island" or his other earlier more famous novels.

Anyway, I read Lee's book quite a while ago when I was going through my "MacLean Phase". Well worth a read for avid Maclean fans!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
"Night Watch" was written by Alastair MacNeill from a story by Alistair MacLean. The plot involves the theft of a famous painting. UNACO, a United Nations detective team is put on the case. There's lots of action and locations that could have been taken from a James Bond movie, but the story is neither very interesting nor very well told. What starts as a mystery ends up as a halfhearted attempt at a spy story, and the writer adds lots of unnecessary details and a subplot about one of the characters' marriage, which slows down the pace. The book also lacks MacLean's trademark humor. Not recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow
I just finished this book and it was great! I often read Clancy and I really enjoyed the same type of feel in this book. The main difference is that it took about 3 days to finish as opposed to 3 weeks with Clancy. I would love to follow the cast of characters on another round, they were very intreaguing.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rescuing the "NIght Watch"
"Alistair MacLean's Night Watch" was actually penned by Alastair MacNeill, working from a novel outline left by MacLean at his death.MacLean is best known in the United States for "Where Eagle Dare" and "The Guns of Navarone."The storyline of "Night Watch" is vintage MacLean, with a complicated plot and lots of dangerous action on an international scale. This novel continues with the cast of U.N. secret agents introduced in "Death Train."

The genesis of the plot is the clever theft of the Rembrandt painting "NIght Watch."The U.N. agents assigned to secure its recovery soon find themselves involved in a series of overlapping international intrigues, their mission threatened by personal conflicts and unforeseen challenges. For those of us who miss Alistair MacLean, "Night Watch" is like diet soda, a reasonably refreshing and serviceable copy of MacLean's writing style from his later years.MacNeill keeps the action moving along smartly and throws in more than enough exotic detail and locales to keep up reader interest. The twists and turns last to the very last page. That said, MacNeill is not quite a master of MacLean's understated ironic humor and precise use of language. The dialogue in particular is occasionally awkward.

This book is recommended to the reader looking for a good adventure story. The plot is fast moving and complicated enough to be easily a step above the average beach novel.

4-0 out of 5 stars An awesome detective story
A novel in the series about a UNACO strike force. In this one the action takes place in South America and involves drug lords, spies and loads of other detective-story types. The action is mostly fast-paced, quite intriguing, with a few interesting plot twists. Very similar to other MacLean stories that were completed by Alistair MacNeil, such as "Night Of The Assasins" and "Death Train". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Code Breaker is a Back Breaker
This book reads like a poorly written screenplay for a bad made-for-TV movie. The characters are incredibly one-dimensional, the interaction of the characters is wooden and all the 'action' is straight out of an 'A-Team' episode. The characters keep calling each other 'the best in the business' but are routinely outwitted and outsmarted. The action is slim, the pacing is poor and the writing is NOT clever.

This author has no business having their name associated in any way with Alistair MacLean.

Skip this book, I wish I had.

1-0 out of 5 stars Garbage!
I have read ALL of Alistair MacLean's novels, multiple times, and am also a five-time-published author.I don't know who "Alastair MacNeill" is but his writing is horrible and he and the publisher (and anyone else involved in allowing Mr. MacLean's name to be remotely attached to this trash) should be flogged. With all of the good writers out there trying to find publishers, how in the world did this hack get a contract?

1-0 out of 5 stars A MacLean to Skip
It says in this book that the story was "conceived" by Alistair MacLean and completed after his death. He might have thought of the name, but any other contribution is invisible. The book nears a record level of linguistic and factual gaffes per page which make the weak characters, predictable plot and ridiculous "action" even more disappointing.
Read his first major work, ^HMS Ulysses^and see if you think the same hand could have done that gripping story and this piece of junk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Thriller
Another excellent thriller based on a storyline by Alistair MacLean. It is one of the sries of books telling about the Strike Force One of the UNACO. The action takes place in Europe as a train with a nuclear bomb as a cargo is racing to it's deadly destination, while the UN agents are trying to stop it. An excellent thriller with unexpected twists and a great ending. ... Read more
