A good start
This book is a good start on the subject and it got me thinking in new directions. Good recomendations in the back. Raised some pertinent points. only compalint is that its a little on the thin side.

Very Informative and well written
Review of Survival Bartering

When I first received this little book, I was disappointed that it was so small.I didn't think it could possibly have much to offer as far as information on bartering.

On the contrary, I was most pleasantly surprised! From the very start, just about every paragraph was packed with good solid information on all aspects of bartering!Even though I have bartered some throughout my life, I still learned a great deal!Some instructions in the book were methods of bartering that I have already used successfully but I appreciated being able to read them in a concise way that helped capsulate my experiences. The verbal illustrations in the book allowed me to see the reasoning behind various practices in bartering. Also, there was a large amount of new material that I am able to make good use of.

This book is not just for reading through once!It is like a bartering bible that you can refer back to from time to time.

I read portions to members of my family, and after listening a while, each person asked me if they could read the book too.

Something that I really appreciated about the book was that it was simply written where even an eighth grader could read and understand it. I thought it was very well organized. Because I amnearly a senior citizen, very small print is becoming difficult for me to read. It was so nice to see well laid out paragraphs with 12 point print rather than very long paragraphs with the smaller 10 point print.

The reason I bought this book is because I want to have better bartering skills for the same reasons someone would purchase any type of insurance.If difficult times were to come about in my life, I will have newly honed bartering skills to fall back on.If money becomes scarce for any reason, I can use bartering in order to purchase much needed items or services.

In the back of the book there are several pages of recommended reading with brief summaries and mailing addresses.There are books listed here that you surely will be surprised and pleased to find.

I highly recommend "Survival Bartering" to anyone with an interest in bartering and I applaud Duncan Long for his excellent presentation!

Well, the illustrations were good. . .
Mister Long is a technical writer whose specialty is modern military firearms.From perusing this well-illustrated text, it soon became painfully obvious that the subject matter was well outside his field of expertise and he was relying more upon research of what others had written rather than his own personal experience.I noted several significant technical errors that an individual with extensive knowledge of the items in question would not have made -- but said errors are not too terribly important, and would go unnoticed by most -- hadta deduct a star for it, though.Another complaint is that many of the knives listed are no longer available (i.e., several selections from Blackjack Knives), but to be fair, this text is about a decade old.

As for the anonymous reviewer who thought the concept of using a short sword in the modern age for defense was "ridiculous", I need to disagree very strongly.A weapon such as a gladius, wakisashi, or qama is an excellent choice for home defense -- especially in areas where firearms are prohibited or danger to others via overpenetration is a factor -- nearly every respected self defense authority (i.e., MacYoung, Mashiro, Jahn, Sockut, etc.) is in agreement on this particular point.

A revised edition would be nice. . .

Simply disappointing
The author claims to be expert in combat blades. Having read his book, I must doubt this claim. I think his neither understands much of knifes nor of knive fighting. Beside some useful hints and stories that you may alsofind in other books on the subject, the all over impression of this book isdisappointing. Trying to sell replicas of antique swords - such as thegladius or the rapier - as modern means of self defense is simplyridiculous. This is the 21st century and not the age of Spartacus orD'Artagnan! Moreover his evaluation criteriafor the blades are veryinconsistant and vary in the different chapters of the book. The book isfull of statements (for example: the western art of fencing is superior toasian traditions) that seem to be subjective judgements. The author wouldhave done well in using scrutinized facts instead. If you areinterestedin bying a good guide on combat blades you should rather try 'Battleblades' by Greg Walker. ... Read more
