5-0 out of 5 stars Really good literature on a fascinating time in Western history
Buck is a St. Bernard/Scotch Shepherd mix dog living in the "sun-kissed" valley of Santa Clara, California. But, when he is stolen and transported up to frozen lands of the Yukon, he discovers an existence almost beyond his comprehension. However, while most southern dogs that are suddenly dropped into this harsh and unforgiving environment, Buck not only survives, he thrives. It seems that ancient memories are speaking to Buck, drawing him towards the call of the wild!

I must say, now that I have finally taken the time to read this book, I clearly see why it is considered a classic! The story is very well-written, filled with action and adventure, and presents a strangely compelling world - the world of the Arctic Circle at the beginning of the 20th century. Now, this is no happy-happy book written for the more sensitive reader. Indeed, the story is filled with violence and conflict and death, much as the Yukon was back then.

I really found this book to be compelling reading, one that I could not put down. So, if you want to read some really good literature on a fascinating time in Western history, then get this book. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buck realizes his potential
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bread harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential.

Buck (a dog that is half St Bernard and half Shepherd) goes through many lives, trials, and tribulations finally realizing his potential. On the way he learns many concepts from surprise, to deceit, and cunning; he also learns loyalty, devotion, and love. As he is growing he feels the call of the wild.

This book is well written. There is not a wasted word or thought and the story while building on its self has purpose and direction. The descriptions may be a tad graphic for the squeamish and a tad sentimental for the romantic. You see the world through Buck's eyes and understand it through his perspective until you also feel the call of the wild.

Product Description
"The London of Jack the Ripper: Then and Now" is a photographic journey through the 'London of Jack the Ripper' as it was when he stalked the mean streets and alleyways of the Capital. Robert Clack and Philip Hutchinson take the reader on a step-by-step tour of the crime scenes, giving a detailed history of the victims, the crimes and the police investigation. Using many previously unpublished photographs and illustrations, the authors put the reader on the very streets that Jack walked, showing the crime scenes, the victims' homes, the common lodging houses and the public houses. They show readers how to retrace the steps the victims took, pointing out the changes to that particular area and when those changes occurred. Using contemporary documents and police files, the authors trace the history of all 11 Whitechapel murders from 1888 to 1891 and discuss other contemporary attacks that may well have been by the same hand. The book will not only be of interest to Ripperologists, but also to those who are interested in the history of London and the East End of London in particular. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars *Mostly* glad I bought it
In all honesty, I was just a little disappointed by this book. The photographs included are largely limited to the crime scenes or other locales relevant to the investigation (both at the present time or at various dates in the past). There are also a few pictures of the victims and some other newspaper/magazine illustrations, but alot of them I have seen elsewhere. The scene pictures are pretty decent but I must say that was rather expecting a few more general pictures of life in Victorian London, not just as related to the crimes, but showing things that help illustrate the period. In fairness, though, it was nowhere advertised that the book would be anymore than what it is so my expectations were probably a bit too high....

The only real criticism I have of the book is the absolute dearth of maps. There really should be maps for each series of photographs to help the non-London resident orient his or herself when examining the photos. Frequently the captions refer to a view as facing some particular compass direction but this is essentially useless to me and, I suspect, other readers.

Notwithstanding my negative comments, though, I am glad I bought this book. The text accompanying the illustrations owas not particularly informative or interesting but I wanted it for the photographs and it is very nice to read other books and then refer to the images in this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars So he wasn't Lucifer afterall...
_This is not a book that one easily forgets. True, you can read it as a simple adventure story of life on a turn-of-the-century seal-hunting schooner, but it is far more than this. It is essentially the story of Wolf Larson- and Wolf Larson is the entire mainstream of 19th and 20th century America in microcosm.

_Larson is no simple brute. He is, rather, a complex brute. He is a master of men and a master of the seas- but that is ALL that he is. Larson is an intelligent, driven, ruthless master of industry (in this case, seal hunting.) He has succeeded through his own abilities, hard work, and talent- or so he would have you believe. Truth is, brutal backstabbing, deception, exploitation, and disregard for the law has played an equal measure in his rise and dominance. You see, Larson believes in the rule of the jungle. He believes in it so much that he is driven to prove that this is all there is to existence. He must always seek to degrade and destroy anyone who seeks to rise above this state. This is also why he must disregard the possibility of the existence of a human soul. Larson is an intelligent, hard-nosed materialist that simply cannot conceive of anything beyond a social Darwinist hell of survival of the fittest. And Wolf Larson must be the fittest of them all. As much as money means to Wolf, it is really power over other beings- men and animals that means the most to him. Without this power to sadistically degrade and dominate others, the money would have no meaning. Ultimately that explains why he has risen to command his own vessel at all costs- he is a control freak that MUST be in absolute, totalitarian command of his whole world. This is why he only mans his ship with the lowest, most bestial types of human being, and does everything in his power to make them worse- not unlike many modern corporations. This is also why the sudden presence of a higher sort of individual, with ideals that transcend mere survival and materialism are so totally threatening to him.

_There are moments when one is almost tempted to sympathize with the Wolf as a champion of freedom- until you realize that in his sort of world his "freedom" means that everyone else must be a slave.

_Ultimately, the Wolf meets the inevitable fate in a world ruled like the jungle. When he loses his sight and strength, the monsters that he has surrounded himself with turn on him. In the last measure there is nothing great about Larson after all, for in facing death he proves to be a petty, murdering, weakling that would rather take all those around him down with him. It seems that despite his grand pretensions, he was no Lucifer at all, but merely a sick, pathetic, sociopath incapable of making the leap into being truly human.

Product Description
The Call of the Wild, by Jack London, is one of America's best-known novels. Currently published in more than twenty separate editions in English alone, this novel about the Klondike Gold Rush of 1896 to 1899 has been continuously in print since it first appeared in 1903. Many editions of "The Call of the Wild" have distorted the original text: the violence is modified, the language is sanitized, and the punctuation and spelling are modernized. This new edition duplicates the original, which London himself edited and approved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SUCH A FABULOUS TREASURE
The Call of the Wild is such a classic that it's hard to believe anyone hasn't read it -- adult, child, everyone should read this delightful book! Sometimes it's hard to read about animals who are mistreated, but there is a higher purpose to the mistreatment in this book, and for the most part everyone gets his just due.

This edition is fine.Lots of information as other reviewers have noted, but I would not call it an illustrated book.Where are the illustrations? There are maps and old photographs, but no illustrations as such.I wish there was an illustrated edition of this book such as the Templar edition of Jack London's White Fang (2008, illustrated by Helen Ward, ISBN 978-1-84011-984-8), such a beautiful book, one to keep and eventually pass on to another book lover. But the bottom line is: any edition of The Call of the Wild (in it's original language) is a delight.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS is the edition to get
If you just want a copy of _The Call of the Wild_, to give to a friend, say, this is the one to get.

The elegant Library of America edition of "London: Novels and Stories" has three complete novels _The Callof the Wild_, _White Fang_, _The Sea-Wolf_, and a very well chosenselection of stories. It's great.Viking's _The Portable Jack London_, ischeap and excellent; it's edited by Earle Labor, has _The Call of theWild_, and an excellent selection of short stories, nonfiction, andletters. If you want copies of _The Call of the Wild_ to give to LOTS offriends, the Dover Thrift Edition is just a buck.

But if you want _just_The Call of the Wild, this edition is nice enough to give as a gift, isclear and legible, and has just the right amount of pictures andannotations. Not a scholarly work, but every time you get to one of thoseplaces where you have a question--where was Dyea? What was the"Chinese lottery?" Could a dog really pull a thousand pound sled?there's Dyer with the answer.

5-0 out of 5 stars ADon't Miss!!!
First story so beautiful and poignant, it brought tears to my eyes.London displays a true understanding of the deeper reaches of nature.A remarkably real parable of the civilized dog brought back to his wild roots."White Fang", longer and wildly overwritten, is nevertheless deeply affecting also.Romantic, sentimental, and perhaps somewhat unrealistic. Each story was wonderful and very individual, somewhat amazing considering there are 40 of them."The Sea Wolf" was the best of all, I thought. The character of Wolf Larsen was just totally intriguing. And I have never forgotten (and will probably carry with me to my grave) a line from that book, uttered by Larsen. To paraphase - The most abundant thing on this planet is not air, or water or land. They are all perishable, or can be ruined or consumed in some way or another. It is life, life itself, that is everywhere.Wolf Larsen was one of the most unforgettable characters in fiction that I have ever run across. An amoral man to the nth degree.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written outdoor adventure stories
If you like the movies you will love these stories.Combines page turning reading witha poetic quality that only Jack London can develop.

Jack London is the writer best known for his novels White Fang and The Call of the Wild, set in the Alaskan wilderness. Most, if not all of us, read these stories in high school. But they make up only a tiny facet of London's "Stories from the North". This is the complete collection of short stories set in the barren wilds of Alaska, the Yukon and the Klondike, written by a man who experienced the life first-hand.

Read 78 stories of adventure and hardship, white Americans and Alaskan Natives, accounts that are true to life. London's stories have been favorites of readers the world over since first they were published. This collection is a must for anyone really interested in his work.

This collection includes the hard-to-find original edition of the often anthologized To Build a Fire.

5-0 out of 5 stars DARRELL STANDLING & CONAN
First time I read Jack London and thoroughly enjoyed Star Rover. Found the 1914 book in a used book store for only $10 and in good condition being nearly 100 years old. The Star-Rover was mentioned in a Robert E. Howard book The Barbaric Triumph by Don Herron-pg 144-145 via a letter from REH to Preece he mentions a book by Jack London-The Star Rover ultimately became the single most influence on him as a writer. In the 1930 letter to Preece REH says that 'London's The Star Rover is a book that I've read and re-read for years, and that generally goes to my head like wine.' 'In The Star Rover, London builds his dark hero Darrell Standling's list of grievances and enemies into a powerful and mountainess indictment of man's propensity for cruel and hate. At a time when most authors were trapped in the rut of boilerplate Ameri-Christian morality, London reveled in the power gained by embracing his irrational, barbaric nature and the hates that accomplished it. To London, and later to REH, hate was a pure, clean emotion, man's most natural impulse, unfettered by civilized morality.' 'To REH, London's prose was perhaps most notable for its ability to pile outrage upon outrage until hate became exaggerated into a towering, unstoppable force. Twenty years later, REH would perfect such writing until it could be argued that he improved upon the master. The Dark Barbarian and The Barbaric Triumpth by Don Herron and Two-Gun Bob are must reads for ALL new to REH and fans alike. Must readsThe Last of the Trunk and Selected Letters of REH by Paul Herman, Blood & Thunder, The Life & Art of REH by Mark Finn, Solomon Kane, Kull, By This Axe I Rule, Beyond The Black River in Best of REH Vol I, Bran Mac Morn, Lord of Samarcand, Cormac Mac Art, Dark Horse comics Conan and Pigeons from Hell, and Savage Sword of Conan a B&W Magazine in the 1970's by Roy Thomas and artist John Buscema, and more.Thank you to Paul Herman, Glen Lord, Mark Finn, Don Herron, Dark Horse comics, and everyone else who has kept REH's legacy alive. I'll definitely be reading more of Jack London.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
this is the best book illustrating how reincarnation works in our everyday life.i've been recommending this book to people ever since it was re-printed years ago. and the kicker is that it was wrtitten by the great jack london - just before his death. i believe, as i've read that he did also, that it is a true story.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The Spirit Is the Reality That Endures": Jack London's Most Ambitious Work
In 1915, just one year before his untimely death, Jack London's most ambitious work was published. It is "The Star Rover" (aka "The Jacket"), story about Darrell Standing, former university professor who is now a Death Row inmate of San Quentin. Opinions about this unique novel still divide among readers, but his intense descriptions about the people in extreme situations are as riveting as his more famous works like "To Build a Fire."

The story of "The Star Rover" is told in the first person by Darrell Standing. In prison he is subjected to severest tortures including straightjacket by the brutal guards and sadistic officers. In this story set in San Quentin (the prison part based on the accounts of London's friend Ed Morrell), Darrell finds a way to escape from the pains by separating his spirit from his body and living the past lives of other people - a little boy in the westward emigration in America; a shipwrecked English sailor in medieval Korea, and so on.

In a way "The Star Rover" is a collection of short stories put together by the framing story of Darrell Standing. The tense and passionate sentences of Jack London are gripping in most of the story, but it must be said that some parts are redundant and a little boring, London not knowing where to go next. Still, once actions start, the book becomes a page turner. Like many stories by Jack London, the protagonists must experience and endure severe conditions of life and their willpowers are tested in the process.

"The Star Rover" is a book about a man who lives many lives. After all the fact that it is written Jack London is nothing surprising because Jack London really lived many lives. The book is certainly flawed and less famous than his Klondike stories, but its style is definitely that of Jack London.

5-0 out of 5 stars Any place but here
I read this wonderful book in high school, more than 40 years ago. Some parts of it are still fresh in my mind... clinging to the rock in the middle of the sea... (illustrated on the cover of the edition I read). The Mountain Meadows massacre, which I had never heard of, and did not believe until I went to the encyclopedia to look it up. The determination of the protagonist not to yield to the abuse of the warden. The transcendence of the soul!

Many of London's stories are testaments to the will to survive or to overcome some desperate situation. I kept hoping that Standing would escape the prison or be pardoned. He did escape, but in a very different way than I was expecting.

I agree with others that this is one of London's greatest works, and it is surprising it is so little known.
