Product Description
"With a single announcement from a herald, all the cities of Greece and Asia had been set free; only an intrepid soul could formulate such an ambitious project, only phenomenal valour and fortune bring it to fruition."
Thus Livy describes the reaction to the Roman commander T.Q. Flamininus' proclamation of the freedom of Greece at the Isthmian games near Corinth in 196 BC. Half a century later Greece was annexed as a province of the Romans who burned the ancient city of Corinth to the ground.
Books 31 to 40 of Livy's history chart Rome's emergence as an imperial nation and the Romans tempestuous involvement with Greece, Macedonia and the near East in the opening decades of the second century BC; they are our most important source for Graeco-Roman relations in that century. Livy's dramatic narrative includes the Roman campaigns in Spain and against the Gallic tribes of Northern Italy; the flight of Hannibal from Carthage and his death in the East; the debate on the Oppian law; and the Bacchanalian Episode.
This is the only unabridged English translation of Books 31 to 40. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Roman History from 201 BC to 180 BC
This book is a translation by J.C Yardley of one of the great Roman historians Livy. Titus Livius was a career historian born during the 1st century BC. His history called Ab Urbe Condita covered Roman history from the founding of Rome to 9 BC. This excerpt (Books 31-40) describes Roman activities from 201 BC (End of the second Punic War) to 180 BC. This time period includes the second Macedonian War, War with Antiochus III of the Seleucid Kingdom, the trial of the Scipios, and the death of Hannibal.

This edition has a great introduction that explains the background and overview of the history you are about to read. It also has a section about Livy's background and his history, Ab Urbe Condita, which is very informative. It also includes about 40 pages of explanatory notes that had great value. There is an appendix listing the consuls and praetors for each year for quick reference. The book also includes several maps, but I didn't find these all that helpful.

A word of caution, Livy's style is dry in comparison to most modern writers. This work is for people interested in Roman history. The level of detail may put off some readers.

Product Description
Book XXI of Livy's history of Rome is one of the most frequently read either in its entirety or in extracts, for it includes Carthaginian campaigns in Spain and Hannibal's momentous crossing of the Alps to invade Italy.

P.G. Walsh's edition, originally published by the University Tutorial Press, is designed specifically for use by students at A-Level. The commentary explains points of historical and literary importance, and elucidates grammatical peculiarities and passages of unusual difficulty. The introduction sets Livy in the context of Roman historiography as a whole, and deals in particular with Book XXI. There is a full vocabulary as well as an index of names and illustrative maps and plans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Livy Book XXI of the the Ab Urbe Condita - Start of the 2nd Punic War
Titus Livius (59BC-17 AD) was a famous Roman historian who wrote the magnificent Ab Urbe Condita (which covers Roman history from its founding until the reign of Augustus). Livy covered the history of the Punic War in books XXI-XXX. Sadly, both Livy's books on the First and Third Punic War are lost. This Bristol Classical Press LATIN TEXT edition of Livy's Book XXI covers the beginning of the Second Punic War, the character of Hannibal, and the historical events of Rome up till the reactions in Rome after the Roman catastrophe at the Battle of Trebia.Livy is a pretty good military historian and besides the copious battle scenes by far the most interesting parts of the history are his lists of bad omens that the inhabitants of Rome see after the defeat at Trebia (the Disaster and long occupation of the Italian Peninsula is to come) and Livy's elaborate battle exhortations and speeches of Hannibal and his Roman opposition.

This Latin Text edition has a superb general introduction and Book XXI specific introduction by P. J. Walsh, a wonderful vocabulary list, further reading list, chronological table, an extremely helpful and extensive notes that help with cultural references and general grammatical explanation, and some a helpful maps (Battle of Trebbia, Sicily, Hannibal's Invasion route) and diagrams (Hannibal Crossing the Alps). This is an absolutely must read (for the layman pick up a copy of the English translation - Penguin, Loeb, etc) for anyone interested in Roman History. This Latin Text edition is a must for anyone who wants to do real research on Livy's monumental Ab Urbe Condita and understand a vital period of Roman Republican history. ... Product Description

Livy (Titus Livius), the great Roman historian, was born at or near Patavium (Padua) in 64 or 59 BCE; he may have lived mostly in Rome but died at Patavium, in 12 or 17 CE.

Livy's only extant work is part of his history of Rome from the foundation of the city to 9 BCE. Of its 142 books, we have just 35, and short summaries of all the rest except two. The whole work was, long after his death, divided into Decades or series of ten. Books 1–10 we have entire; books 11–20 are lost; books 21–45 are entire, except parts of 41 and 43–45. Of the rest only fragments and the summaries remain. In splendid style Livy, a man of wide sympathies and proud of Rome's past, presented an uncritical but clear and living narrative of the rise of Rome to greatness.

The Loeb Classical Library edition of Livy is in fourteen volumes. The last volume includes a comprehensive index.

Product Description

Livy's Early History of Rome tells of a small monarchical state's struggle to survive. It tells the story of the overthrow of the kings and the development of the Roman Republic. It depicts the qualities that allowed the early Romans to overcome internal disputes and foreign enemies and to recover after the nearly total destruction of their city in 390 BC. Livy writes with fairness, humanity, and an irresistible enthusiasm for the courage, honesty, and self-sacrifice that exemplified what it was to be Roman.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rome in the Beginning
Here in the first five books of Livy's From the Founding of the City is the history of the formation of the Roman state. His narrative (at least this translation) is elegantly written and chronicles the leaders and citizenry, neighboring peoples, the forms of government, and the wars that shaped the developing Roman city and state, from monarchy to semi-republic. This is part of the Barnes & Noble Library of Essential Reading series, and in it we are also given a fairly good introduction to acquaint the reader with some background information on Titus Livy and his famous account of the history of Rome, including the author's strengths and weaknesses as a historian.

The first 200 plus years of Rome's history is characterized as the monarchy, which includes the reigns ofRomulus, Numa, Servius Tullius, Tarquinius and others. Livy details the nature of these men, their leadership styles and other characteristics of their respective tenures as king. We also learn about the Roman people and their neighboring tribes, the struggles with some of theses neighbors, and useful insights into the religious observances of the people of Rome.

After the period of the kings there evolved a semi-republican form of government with the election of consuls, tribunes and other magistrates. This period was also marked by frequent struggles between the patrician class and the plebeians. Indeed, Livy's account of each year seems to fall into a pattern of class conflict or conflict with neighboring tribes, though some years prove fairly uneventful. These events should not be terribly surprising to anyone who understands human nature. Livy provides us with indelible impressions of individual leaders in the political and military spheres as well as events occurring on the home front and in the battlefields.

As the introduction made clear, if Livy has to be suspect in the eyes of the serious historian, there can be no doubt that Livy has great value in showing us the mentality of the Romans and what they believed in. Livy likes to describe to us the innumerable incidents of bravery and courage on the part of various Roman leaders, soldiers and citizens, and conversely, acts of wickedness, betrayal, and cowardness on the part of others. Livy does seem to have a penchant for extolling the virtues of the Roman people (especially those he highlights as having performed brave and noble deeds) and the general Roman state, though he can be critical of his own people, including bothleaders and commoners.

I think it's fair to say that anyone with some interest or knowledge of Roman history will find this particular narrative of the early history of Rome to be essential reading. Livy has much to teach us on the nature of the Roman people and their beliefs. If he is lacking in some regards, he is still a vital source that can not be overlooked. ... Read more

Product Description
Olivia Langdon Clemens was not only the love of Mark Twain's life and the mother of his children, she was also his editor, muse, critic and trusted advisor. She read his letters and speeches. He relied on her judgment on his writing, and readily admitted that she not only edited his work, but also edited his public persona.
Until now, little has been known about Livy's crucial place in Twain's life. In Resa Willis's affecting and fascinating biography, we meet a dignified, optimistic women who married young, raised three sons and a daughter, endured myriad health problems and money woes and who faithfully traipsed all over the world with Twain--Africa, Europe, Asia--while battling his moodiness and her frailty.
Twain adored her. A hard-drinking dreamer with an insatiable wanderlust, he needed someone to tame him. It was Livy who encouraged him to finish his autobiography even through the last stages of her illness. When she died in 1904, Twain's zest for life and writing was gone. He died six years later.
A triumph of the biographer's art, Mark and Livy presents the fullest picture yet of one of the most influential women in American letters. ... Read more

It's not simply that Willis provides readers with a new way of understanding Twain's life and work--it's that she does so with such an eloquent prose style. If on the surface Olivia Langdon Clemens appears tobe the quintessential Victorian lady--frail, neuresthenic, domestic--herinner strength and unflappable judgement are skillfully uncovered byWillis, who in this work produces that rarest of things:a literarybiography that is both literary and biographical.

5-0 out of 5 stars Father of Modern Political Philosophy
Niccolo Machiavelli, (1469-1527), writes the greatest treatise on keeping a republic vibrant by comparing Rome to republican Venice.Machiavelli has gained an unwarranted notorious reputation for his "evil" treatise on political thinking and acting through his authorship of "The Prince"."The Prince" received more notoriety than his politically erudite work "Discourses on the First Ten Books of Livy" in which Machiavelli espouses his belief that the Roman Republic was the best and most virtuous form of government to emulate. His breadth and understanding of Roman history is remarkable.Machiavelli's love of his country Florence, and the proud political work as a minor government administrator and ambassador Machiavelli performed during its years as a republic show through in this work.It was on his many ambassadorial trips to the French, Papal, and Italian courts that he learned to observe political leaders and their governmental institutions which formed the basis of his political theories in his many writings. My favorite quote from Machiavelli is; "It's better to act and repent then not to act and regret".

Modern philosophers starting with Machiavelli reject the classical view of politics as undemocratic and elitist.Only wealthy men of leisure would have time to develop the virtues and character necessary to rule.Machiavelli believed that man by nature was selfish and driven by ambition.Machiavelli is not interested in character formation and moral appeal but in building the right kind of institutions to govern society.Laws and justice would protect men from power hungry rulers.Modern philosophy is an out growth of the revolution that takes place in the natural sciences during the Enlightenment. The purpose of science is the conquest of nature man is in control of human life.Philosophers from Machiavelli on become sectarian."Everything good is due to man's labor rather than to nature's gift."

As a retired Army officer and student of political philosophy, I found this to be an indispensable book to continue one's journey into political philosophy and history of Europe.

Product Description

The modern age is not the only one in which Romans and visitors to Rome have been fascinated with the city's striking juxtapositions of past and present. Rome's wealth of history also captured the imagination of the ancients. Livy's Written Rome, by Mary Jaeger, shows how one writer explored the relationship between events in Roman history, the landscape in which they occurred, and the monuments that commemorated them. While Augustus reconstructed the physical city to reflect the ideology of the Empire, the historian Livy created a written Rome and taught his readers to look beyond the city's dramatically altered landscape. In so doing, they gained insight into the lessons of the lost Republic.

Drawing upon modern discourse on the connection between private mental spaces and public civic spaces, this first in-depth study of Livy's use of the urban landscape offers discerning views on his interpretation of ancient theories of historiography. Livy's Written Rome discusses the Roman idea of the monument as a place where memory and space intersect and includes fresh readings of several historical episodes, including the battle over the Sabine Women, the sedition of Marcus Manlius, and the trials of the Scipios.

Scholars have long criticized Livy as a historian because his work is not in accord with modern historiographical standards. Yet even his critics agree that Livy is a masterful literary artist, and recent work on Livy has argued for the complexity and originality of his thought. Across the humanities, recent scholarship has focused on the role of memory in civic consciousness and identity. This book explores the ways in which Livy's texts question traditional assumptions about the preservation and use of the past. In doing so, it identifies a new and important facet of Livy's representation of urban Rome.

Livy's Written Rome will be of interest to classicists and historians, students of ancient historiography and classical rhetoric, as well as general readers interested in memory, monuments, and historical narrative.

Mary Jaeger is Professor of Classics, University of Oregon.

Product Description
The Discourses on Livy is a work of political history and philosophy composed in the early 16th century by the famed Florentine public servant and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527), best known as the author of The Prince. Where The Prince is devoted to advising the ruler of a principality, i.e., a type of monarchy, the Discourses purport to explain the structure and benefits of a republic, a form of government based on popular consent and control. It is considered almost unanimously by scholars to be if not the first, then certainly the most important, work on republicanism in the early modern period. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More representative of Machiavelli
Read the Prince? Think Machiavelli is a power-grabbing loon? Read this and think again. In the Discourses on Livy, Machiavelli studies the history of the Roman Republic, compares it to Italy in the Renaissance, and attempts to found a theory of political stability based upon the people, and not the elitist monarchs. One of the first works to recognize the people as superior decision makers to the state.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truely great evaluation of government
I am glad that I had read and re-read Titus Livy before reading this book. Doing so is not an absolute necessity, but I think it helps.

This fantastic book reveals how the governments of ancient Rome, renaissance Florence, and, if you will, modern America are confronted with nearly identical problems, and it is also made clear that nobody has worked out solutionw much superior to those embrassed by the leaders of Republican Rome. We would all be better off if our leaders could be required to read this book.

In THE PRINCE the author provides a renaissance monarch a survival kit for coping with the problems he would likely face. In the DISCOURSES we are treated to a much broader analysis of a better and more viable system of government which is amazingly similar to what the Founding Fathers of the United States tried to achieve. Alas, as with the Roman Republic, ours has, because of its current massiveness and complexity, appeared to have lost sight of what once made it great.

Product Description
The Third Macedonian War ended the kingdom created by Philip II and Alexander the Great and was a crucial step in Rome's eventual dominance of the Mediterranean World. For Livy, the story is also a fascinating moral study. He presents the war not so much as a battle against Perseus, Alexander's last and least worthy successor, than as a struggle to shape the Roman national character. Only traditional moral strength, embodied in Lucius Aemilius Paullus, the general who ultimately defeats Perseus, ensures the Roman victory.
This is the first complete English translation in fifty years of Brooks 41-45 of Livy's history of Rome. The excellent introduction by Jane D. Chaplin sheds light on the place of Livy's work in ancient historical writing, discusses his sources and the historical background, and highlights the structure of the five books and their content. The book includes explanatory notes, a glossary of technical terms, a summary of events, an index, and four maps. It is the only paperback edition to include the Periochae, the summaries of Livy's entire 142 books, previously available in English only in Loeb's hardcover series. ... Read more

Product Description

Machiavelli's New Modes and Orders is the only full-length interpretive study on Machiavelli's controversial and ambiguous work, Discourses on Livy. These discourses, considered by some to be Machiavelli's most important work, are thoroughly explained in a chapter-by-chapter commentary by Harvey C. Mansfield, one of the world's foremost interpreters of this remarkable philosopher.

Mansfield's aim is to discern Machiavelli's intention in writing the book: he argues that Machiavelli wanted to introduce new modes and orders in political philosophy in order to make himself the founder of modern politics. Mansfield maintains that Machiavelli deliberately concealed part of his intentions so that only the most perceptive reader could see beneath the surface of the text and understand the whole of his book. Previously out of print, Mansfield's penetrating study brings to light the hidden thoughts lurking in the details of the Discourses on Livy to inform and challenge its readers at every step along the way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique and invaluable
The return of this book to print is a great boon to anyone interested in Machiavelli, or who has ever struggled through the Discourses wondering just what Old Nick is getting at.

Originally published more than 20 years ago, "New Modes and Orders" remains the only full length commentary on the Discourses ever published in English. As such, it is indespensible, for the Discourses is at once Machiavelli's most difficult and most important book. Those of us who until now have had to rest content with rumaging through library copies dreading the due date will gladly shell out...to have a copy on our own shelves.

"New Modes" has often been critized for its reserve bordering on circumspection. There is justice in this criticism. This book is not an easy read, and it does not "explain" the difficulties of the Discourses in a way that readers who are not willing to work will find helpful.

But despite his overall reserve, Mansfield is surprisingly candid on a few points of extreme importance. My own impression is that his method is to state baldly a handful of broad but essential points, and then elusivley wade through a host of details the understanding of which allows us to fill in the gaps between the broad points.

One example will suffice. You don't need to be well versed in military affairs to realize that practically none of Machiavelli's arguments in Book II of the Discourses makes any sense. Mansfield helps us resolve this difficulty, right at the outset of his treatment of that Book, by plainly stating that Book II is an argument not about physical warfare but about spiritual warfare. It is in fact a long, sustained metaphor in which certain topics and terms serve as stand-ins for Machiavelli's real subjects. Then, having drawn the curtain completely open, just for a second, Mansfield lets it close, and proceeds to his line-by-line discussion of Book II--but only after he has let us know what is really going on, thereby giving us the tools to understand for ourselves what will be discussed in this all-important section.

I wish also to note that Mansfield is a masterful writer, and that few books--and almost no scholarly books--can claim to be this well done. He is also a very funny man. Machiavelli is lucky to have found a commentator who not only appreciates his sublte jokes but contributes some delightful jokes of his own that are worthy of the master.

In sum: this book will frustrate you. It will make you sweat and curse and fume. But it rewards the patient. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfection!
While some history is bunk, this sure ain't.
Ranks among the most amazing tales ever told.Few rivals among tellers...Dodge?Perhaps.
But this is a succinct little volume, fully displaying the guile and gumption of Hannibal, rivaled at most by Suleiman?Sans pareil.
And what a nifty little volume. You can read the English, come across something weird like "corn", a grain not introduced to Europe for two thousand years, and then find fromentum or whatever in the Latin. And then you can read about the Elephants and oxen, the marshes and river crossings, Alpine tribes, and find the Latin passages.Somehow, it is a great experience. The maps at the back might appeal to old veterans with crooked fingers, but they're worth a pause. They fold out and are in color.
Hey, so I admit I'm weird. But this book is great fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars Livy on the early stages of the Second Punic War
Titus Livius (59BC-17 AD) was a famous Roman historian who wrote the magnificent Ab Urbe Condita (which covers Roman history from its founding until the reign of Augustus).Livy covered the history of the Punic War in books XXI-XXX.Volume V of the Loeb edition (1929) covers from book XXI-XXII, i.e. the beginning of the Second Punic war to the battle of Cannae (and the resultant panic in Rome). Also included in this edition is the translator's note about the Medieval Textual tradition of this section of Ab Urbes Condita (not all the books of Livy's history survived).Sadly, the Loeb edition does not have introductions for each volume, instead, a somewhat scarce introduction at the very beginning of the series. However, the superbly drawn maps of Hannibal's crossing of the Alps, operations on the Po River, the Battle of Trebia, the Battle of Lake Trasumennus, Callicula and Gerunium, and the three phases of the Battle of Cannae, are a highlight of the volume. Also included, are the Periocha, or summaries of each book, that existed in circulation in Roman and Medieval times.

Book XXI: The character of Hannibal and his history and the causes of the Second Punic war are described.Hannibal is forced to swear by his father (a commander of the First Punic War) to wage war against the Romans.Hannibal attacks the city of Saguntum (an ally of Rome).Rome declares war and Hannibal crosses of Pyrenees, routes some tribes who try to stop him, and crosses the Alps with his elephants. He descends into Italy (Livy's speeches are fascinating) and defeats the Romans at Ticinus (the young Scipio, later the victor over Hannibal, saves his father in this battle).Hannibal defeats the Romans at Trebia and crosses the Apennines towards Rome.

Book XXII: Hannibal ambushes the Romans at the battle of Lake Trasummenus and Quintus Fabius Maximus is sent to oppose Hannibal. Aemilius Paulus and Terentius Varro became consuls and oppose Hannibal at Cannae.Hannibal inflicts the largest defeat ever suffered by the Romans using the classic encircling technique and his Numidian horsemen and their is great lamenting at Rome. ... Product Description
An epic endeavor by a man genuinely enamored of his native Rome, Livy's "The History of Rome" was originally written in 142 books spanning the entire history of the Roman people up to Livy's day in the time of Augustus in the first century BC. While this Roman historian's monumental undertaking took most of his life, only 35 books still survive today. Livy begins with Aeneas' landing on Italy and the myth of Romulus and Remus' founding of Rome. He also thoroughly covers numerous wars, such as the Samnite Wars, the Punic Wars, and the Social War, as well as all of the rulers of Rome, including Julius Caesar, Nero, and Augustus. Though the work is a bit biased, its countless references to other sources are a testament of Livy's attempt to create an accurate, understandable history of the Roman Kingdom, and, later, the Republic. Simultaneously a glorification of Rome and a passionate warning to future Romans, "Ab Urbe Condita" reflects the magnificence and ignominy, the opinions and interests, and the myths and ...
