5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fun with the Devil!
"The best way to drive out the devil, if he will not yield to texts of Scripture, is to jeer and flout him, for he cannot bear scorn." -- Luther
"The devill... that prowde spirite... cannot endure to be mocked." -- Thomas More

Here Lewis does his best to make fun of the devil by means of an imagined exchange of letters between an "apprentice" devil and his mentor, an old seasoned demon named Screwtape. The letters tell as much about human beings as they do about the wiles of the devil, and have been justly famous and loved by Christians since their first publication in 1943.This edition also includes a preface in which Lewis answers an oft asked question:Does he really believe in devils? -- and there is a new section absent from earlier editions:Screwtape Propsoses a Toast.Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great series
Since I am a C.S. Lewis fan, I looked forward to reading these books. They were better than I had even anticipated--full of meaning for life (the struggle of good and evil) in the midst of an engaging story. The same main character (Dr. Ransom) appears in all three. The last one ("That Hideous Strength")was so fascinating that I could hardly wait to pick it up.These books require a thoughtful reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Fiction
The C.S. Lewis space trillogy in my opinion is one of the more enjoyable works that C.S.Lewis wrote. It is a fantasy written to an older audience than the Chronicles of Narnia and like the rest of his fiction works has a numerous ties to christian theology. The three books in the trillogy, Out of the Silent Planet, Peralandra, and That Hideous Strength follow chronologically but any one of them could be read on its own and make sense. My favorite is Peralandra as it deals with the fall of man in the garden of eden while remaining a well written story in its own right.
I greatly enjoyed the format of the volume I purchased where all three books were in one hard bound edition, that is mostly preference and the series is also available as individual hard and soft bound books and, I think, a soft bound volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it in the '70s and love Lewis now
Like the Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis's Space Trilogy is timeless. The story brings allegory to a new art.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great series
. I love anything to do with space so naturally when I found out C.S.Lewis had written a trilogy I bought and read all three. I recently wrote a song with my band Red Umbrella loosely based on the first book 'Out of the Silent Planet'. The song begins as our hero Ransom has been drugged and stowed on a spacecraft to who knows where...http://www.redumbrella.net/freeaudio/RedUmbrella_CrazyAcoustic.mp3

I find this a very provocative science fiction trilogy.Lewis' view of cosmology and theology is neat, and the story, though somewhat dated, is interesting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lo tiene que leer!
... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite tale from Narnia, but still excellent
Prince Caspian is a novel that firmly understands its place as a sequel. It name checks The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe on the first page, letting the reader know that this is a continuation of past tales, and definitely not a stand-alone.

Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy Pevensie traveled to Narnia in the previous book, where they met the lion Aslan, defeated the White Witch, and collectively ruled the country for years and years. When they finally went back to their own world, no time had passed at all, and their ages regressed from adults to children. Now, a year of real-world time has passed and the kids are all sitting at a train station when they get suddenly pulled back into Narnia. This being whisked away instantly is a big change for them, because they've never involuntarily gone to Narnia before, but as it happens, they've been specifically summoned to help Narnia in a time of great need. Once confronted with a heroic task, the Pevensies do what they've always done--rise to meet the challenge. Along the way they flee from enemies, fight duels, start a battle, and learn to trust Aslan at all times, a feat which is considerably more difficult than dueling and winning battles.

Prince Capsian is a great children's lit book, but it's not close to being my favorite in this series. For one thing, I start asking myself too many character-psycholgy questions when I read it. I find it odd that the Pevensie kids aren't shown to have any troubles adjusting to their old life after living in Narnia for a couple of decades, and then after coming back to Narnia, they really are back to their kid-selves in mentality, though they have some mad survivalist skills and an added measure of nobility. I won't mention the 2008 film version of Prince Caspian again, but this was one area where I truly thought the movie did an excellent job--it showed the turmoil and struggle that the four main characters would naturally experience as part of their switching between adulthood and childhood, between dark fantasy and the mundane world. But these are just my thoughts. The book itself isn't trying to get deep into the psychology of people who are longterm adventurers in fantasy worlds--it just wants to give us another good adventure, and it does.

Some attempts at character growth are shown. Edmund has become one of the calmer, wiser siblings after his harrowing ordeal in the first book. Lucy isn't just a little ray of sunshine--she's a brave, gutsy little ray of sunshine, because she has to be willing to leave her sister and brothers behind and follow Aslan on her own. It doesn't come to that, but she proves she's willing. Peter, the commander of them all, is still a strong leader and a master of kingly protocols (which comes in handy later, when he's challenging the false king Miraz to a formal duel), but he's suffering from a crisis in faith. Susan, as always, seems like the least three-dimensional of the Pevensies, but even that fact plays an important part in later books.

I do like how Prince Caspian functions as a "down" sequel. Second books are supposed to be darker and go to more dismal places (think of The Two Towers or The Empire Strikes Back), and this one does so with aplomb. When the Pevensies finally get a recap of the past 1,000 years of Narnian history, they learn that a race of humans called the Telmarines have conquered Narnia and all the dwarves, dryads, animals, etc. have long since gone into hiding. Also, Aslan hasn't visited in so long that his presence is only a legend, and many of the Old Narnians have moved from feeling forsaken by Aslan to not believing in him at all. Yes, times are so bad that even the talking rabbits have become atheists.

C.S. Lewis said somewhere that this novel is about the restoration of true faith after a long period of corruption, and that meaning is certainly evident through the return of Aslan and the restoration of Old Narnia, but as a Christian, I've also found this story to represent the times in life when we can't "feel" God's presence, but we have to forge ahead and do what's right anyway.

Awesome elements: 1. Memorable side characters. Trumpkin the cynical dwarf, Glenstorm the centaur, and Reepicheep, the courageous swashbuckling mouse. 2. Thematic contrast. In the first book, Narnia is enslaved under an evil magic spell, and now its strangled by an oppressive military regime, and the two problems are dealt with very differently. 3. Old villains. Thought the White Witch was gone for good? Think again. 4. Werewolves. Well, just one, and he's the creepy kind, but still--Narnia has werewolves! 5. Reasonably violent. As mentioned, Peter duels with King Miraz, and there's skirmishes, attempted drownings, an assassination--even Reepicheep loses a tail (Spoiler: it grows back).

If you can get through the longish opening chapters when the Pevensies don't know where they are, then the chapters of Caspian meeting the Old Narnians and having his army mustered, you'll be well on your way to getting to the meat of the story: the importance of keeping the faith in the darkest of times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prince Caspian is a classic
this book is a classic for all children hungry for an adventure. I knowthat there was a movie i thought that the book was a ***** star and the movie a **** star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prince Caspian
This book was purchased as part of a grant fulfillment by Kappa Delta Pi-Eta Theta Chapter of Brooklyn College. This book was included in our annual read-aloud and book give-away at Sesame Flyers in Brooklyn. The children were thrilled with the books!

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite childhood adventure novel
There is a lot made of the Christian allegory by some of the reviewers. And sure, it is there. But this is a book that can (was) enjoyed by a child ignorant of the parallels to Christ. The moral themes of fair play and the like come through regardless. And the adventure is rousing.

The edition shown here is nice in that it is a bit more durable and this is a book that will be reread. In addition, the original illustrations are great. So, if you are willing to spend a little more buy this one.But if that's an objection, just buy any edition (used books are fine) or even get it from the library. And have your kids read it!

1-0 out of 5 stars would i read this book again

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully mature and insightful work!
Considering Lewis wrote this cycle of poems when he was in his early twenties, they provide incredibly mature insight into the role pain has in people's lives. I ordered this book because I am writing my thesis on C.S. Lewis - I have to say, no study of Lewis' work is complete without this, his earliest and perhaps most poignant contribution to thoughts on powerfully important human topics like pain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not the best poetry, but vital to a proper understanding of Lewis
These poems have their bright spots, thought in parts they are rather overloaded with mythic words and a sense that the author was struggling to keep up a sense of awe and epicness and failing in the process. Most of the poems revolve around two themes: (1) I hate God and (2) I hate the world. Most of them are not happy poems to say the least.

While they are not excellent poetry, they are decent, and very good if you take into consideration that he wrote them while a teenager. They provide a glimpse into his thoughts on life and God which cannot even be seen in his letters from the period. He apparently felt he was able to write in poetry what he did not necessarily want others to know that be thought. The fact that he published it under the false name Clive Hamilton should not be overlooked.

In short, do not get this if you're looking for excellent poetry.Get this if you want to understand the development of Lewis' thought.

Overall grade: B+

5-0 out of 5 stars Little-known writing on par with Lewis' best
The creativity and keen spiritual insights that have made C.S. Lewis the most renowned Christian writer of the modern era combine with eloquent poetry to reveal the writer's struggles, hopes and nightmares that predate his conversion to Christianity. This book of poems illustrates his yearning for truth and salvation by revealing his images God, man and Satan in delightful, rhyming lyrics. The intellectual and spiritual force present in these poems create a powerful edge rarely matched.Readers will discern the drive that eventually leads Lewis to find "his heart's delight." This is a must-have for those who have appreciated Lewis' other writings.

Lewis' searching and questions parallel many who have had doubts about the present reality and character of a God that seems to hide in mysteries. The genius behind Mere Christianity and the Chronicles of Narnia is behind these poems, even though he has yet to have his eyes opened. The heart of a desperate, sincere seeker of God is painted in these lyrics that in themselves make great poetry.

5-0 out of 5 stars vivid, beautiful poems
I know that Lewis is mostly known for his books, but these poems have images in them that have remained in my mind for several years after I've read them...the imagery, and the ideas, is what really works in these poems.
Also, it is very interesting to read what Lewis wrote before he became a Christian; since most of his writings are religious.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Christian Poetry of C.S. Lewis
First published in 1919 when Lewis was 20, a recent veteran of World War I, and still an agnostic/atheist. The planned title was "Spirits in Prison" taken from the verse in First Peter. The title reflects Lewis' Platonic dualism that sees the human spirit (which is good) trapped in matter (which is evil). Lewis never abandoned Platonism entirely (e.g. "The Last Battle") but it is far more stark and more grim in many of these early poems. In this - his transition from Platonism and its remaining vestiges after conversion - Lewis is similar to St. Augustine. (For more in this line see Lewis' "The Pilgrim's Regress" - particularly the introductory essay he wrote for later editions). "Spirits in Bondage" has beautiful moments such as "Dungeon Grates" which is not (in portions) an unfit expression of a Christian's experience: that sudden awareness of `unsought beauty in a casual hour.' All in all, this book is fairly grim (flatly blasphemous in places), but interesting for who wrote it and for the occasional moments of beauty and wit. [The star rating is reflective of this last thought.] ... Read more
