Product Description
The first retrospective of the life s work of Roberta Spear (1948 2003), A Sweetness Rising includes newly published work as well as poems from her previous volumes. Nationally acclaimed and admired by both readers and peers, she wrote poems that touch people by presenting daily life in unexpected ways. In the words of Philip Levine,You could say at times she saw stories where there were none or where she simply invented them, exotic stories of gypsies and pranksters, travelers and seekers....[Her] vision will continue to sing, moving and touching readers for as long as people care about American poetry. ... Product Description
"...Legaspi, like William Carlos Williams, can find poetry anywhere. And like his mentor Pablo Neruda he seems able to locate the mysterious and the magical in the most common and overlooked objects. It is difficult to overestimate the daring and resourcefulness required to complete successfully this astonishingly original book.I believe this collection of poetry, so rich in the dailyness of the world and what wisdom we can draw from it, is ample evidence that Joseph O. Legaspi has arrived to a place none of his ancestors in life or in poetry have ever journeyed, and we his readers are the richer for it."--Philip Levine ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
Joseph Legaspi is a brilliant poet already well known within New York City's poetry networks. With Imago, the mainstream finally has an opportunity to also view his haunting, deliriously beautiful words.Though seemingly impossible, Legaspi's work manages to create belonging from dispossession, without ever succumbing to clichéd or naïve statements about of life. With eyes that are compassionate and unconditionally loving, Legaspi creates beauty while showing the volatile, often painful, interplay of our everyday emotions and experiences.Legaspi finds the magic of life wherever he looks. His poetry is a true gift. ... Product Description
No longer the Motor City of boom-time industry, the city of Detroit has fallen into an incredible state of dilapidation since the decline of the American auto industry after the Second World War. Today, whole sections of the city resemble a war zone, its once-spectacular architectural grandeur reduced to vacant ruins. In DetroitDisassembled, photographer Andrew Moore records a territory in which the ordinary flow of time-or the forward march of theassembly line-appears to have been thrown spectacularly into reverse. For Moore, who throughout his career has been drawn to allthat contradicts or seems to threaten America's postwar self-image(his previous projects include portraits of Cuba and Soviet Russia),Detroit's decline affirms the carnivorousness of our earth, as it seepsinto and overruns the buildings of a city that once epitomizedhumankind's supposed supremacy. In Detroit Disassembled, Moorelocates both dignity and tragedy in the city's decline, among postapocalypticlandscapes of windowless grand hotels, vast barren factoryfloors, collapsing churches, offices carpeted in velvety moss andentire blocks reclaimed by prairie grass. Beyond their jawdropping content, Moore's photographs inevitably raise the uneasy question of the long-term future of a country in which such extreme degradation can exist unchecked. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Motor city madness
To quote from the Product Description above: 'Today, whole sections of the city resemble a war zone, its once-spectacular architectural grandeur reduced to vacant ruins'.Most of us, of course, don't have personal experience of war zones but we can all pull up a mental picture which is probably partially accurate.Andrew Moore's quite extraordinary photos will confirm your mental image but the freaky thing is that Detroit is no war zone. The population didn't leave because of bombs or military intervention; mostly they didn't even leave but continue to survive amongst all this decaying industrial, public and private building detritus.

The thing that grabbed me and Moore's photos reveal it so often is the amount of physical equipment that was just left as buildings were abandoned.Page twenty-three shows a huge open-plan room of the Detroit Schools Book Depository, the whole floor covered with books that are slowly decaying.Page fifty-five has an amazing shot of one side of the Cass Tech High School, minus sixteen large classroom windows to reveal a jumble of desks, chairs, tables, casual seating and books and papers everywhere.Again at Cass, Moore spotted a wall clock with a plastic dial, part of which melted over the hour and minute hands, the only time you'll ever see a real Dali timepiece.

Several exterior shots of houses show them either collapsing or showing signs of heavy amateurish DIY.Page ninety-six has a house totally covered in foliage with just a sliver of the roof to be seen confirming that it is two stories. Some interiors really do look like bomb damage, with falling walls and ceilings. The circular lobby of the downtown United Artists Theater reveals some of the steel structure because chunks of the plaster have fallen off.

Moore's photos reveal disaster Detroit in beautiful even color throughout the book and 300 screen printing on a good matt art plus the large page size delivers a punch to these seventy amazing images.

The book obviously raises questions about urban decay and is Detroit the ultimate throwaway society city and by the nature of what can be seen there it also acts as a magnet for creative folk.Photographers Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre have a forthcoming book: Yves Marchand & Romain Meffre: The Ruins of Detroit, covering the abandonment.Great creative minds think alike because there is a straight on photo of a house (the corner of Brush and Erskine) that is identical to one in Moore's book on page ninety-seven.

Product Description

Jaime Sabines is a national treasure in Mexico. He is considered by Octavio Paz to be instrumental to the genesis of modern Latin American poetry and “one of the best poets” of the Spanish language. Toward the end of his life, he had published for over fifty years and brought in crowds of more than 3,000 to a readings in his native country. Coined the “Sniper of Literature” by Cuban poet Roberto Fernández Retamar, Sabines brought poetry to the streets. His vernacular, authentic poems are accessible: meant not for other poets, or the established or elite, but for himself and for the people.

In this translation of his fourth book, Tarumba, we find ourselves stepping into Sabines’ streets, brothels, hospitals, and cantinas; the most bittersweet details are told in a way that reaffirms: “Life bursts from you, like scarlet fever, without warning.” Eloquently co-translated by Philip Levine and the late Ernesto Trejo, this bilingual edition is a classic for Spanish- and English-speaking readers alike. Secretive, wild, and searching, these poems are rife with such intensity you’ll feel “heaven is sucking you up through the roof.”

Jaime Sabines was born on March 25, 1926 in Chiapas, Mexico. In 1945, he relocated to Mexico City where he studied Medicine for three years before turning his attention to Philosophy and Literature at the University of Mexico. He wrote eight books of poetry, including Horal (1950), Tarumba (1956), and Maltiempo (1972), for which he received the Xavier Villaurrutia Award. In 1959, Sabines was granted the Chiapas Prize and, in 1983, the National Literature Award. In addition to his literary career, Sabines served as a congressman for Chiapas. Jaime Sabines died in 1999; he remains one of Mexico’s most respected poets.

Philip Levine (translator) was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1928. He is the author of sixteen books of poetry, most recently Breath (Alfred A. Knopf, 2004). His other poetry collections include The Mercy (1999); The Simple Truth (1994), which won the Pulitzer Prize; What Work Is (1991), which won the National Book Award; New Selected Poems (1991); Ashes: Poems New and Old (1979), which received the National Book Critics Circle Award and the first American Book Award for Poetry; 7 Years From Somewhere (1979), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award; and The Names of the Lost (1975), which won the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. He has received the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the Harriet Monroe Memorial Prize from Poetry, the Frank O'Hara Prize, and two Guggenheim Foundation fellowships. Philip Levine lives in New York City and Fresno, California, and teaches at New York University.

1-0 out of 5 stars Promotional reference material.
Ugh!!!!This book is very repetitive... it seems as if they just used cut and paste(d) different cultural group names in some chapters to others leaving most of the same text. There should have been an introduction chapter saying all groups have this in common and then separate chapters emphasizing only on the differences. Also, I have never read any book with so many quotes and references from sources that wished to remain anonymous. It made it seem more like people complaining than having actual factual situations to back up the comments. ... Product Description

Augustinus (354–430 CE), son of a pagan, Patricius of Tagaste in North Africa, and his Christian wife Monica, while studying in Africa to become a rhetorician, plunged into a turmoil of philosophical and psychological doubts in search of truth, joining for a time the Manichaean society. He became a teacher of grammar at Tagaste, and lived much under the influence of his mother and his friend Alypius. About 383 he went to Rome and soon after to Milan as a teacher of rhetoric, being now attracted by the philosophy of the Sceptics and of the Neo-Platonists. His studies of Paul's letters with Alypius and the preaching of Bishop Ambrose led in 386 to his rejection of all sensual habits and to his famous conversion from mixed beliefs to Christianity. He returned to Tagaste and there founded a religious community. In 395 or 396 he became Bishop of Hippo, and was henceforth engrossed with duties, writing and controversy. He died at Hippo during the successful siege by the Vandals.

From Augustine's large output the Loeb Classical Library offers that great autobiography the Confessions (in two volumes); On the City of God (seven volumes), which unfolds God's action in the progress of the world's history, and propounds the superiority of Christian beliefs over pagan in adversity; and a selection of Letters which are important for the study of ecclesiastical history and Augustine's relations with other theologians.
