Theophraste Longuet, retired rubber stamp manufacturer, is periodically possessed by the spirit of long-dead villain Cartouche in this feverish French melodrama. (Also known as 'The Man with the Black Feather'.)
'...the end of the Street of Paris you know the street that leads from Paris to the Conciergerie. We passed through that frightfully dark passage, where we found the grating behind which they cut off the hair of the women before execution. You know that it is the very same grating. It is a passage where never a ray of sunlight penetrates. Marie Antoinette walked through that passage on the day of her death. It is there that the old Conciergerie stands just as it was hundreds of years ago.
I was describing the Street of Paris, when suddenly the man with the green umbrella cried out in a voice so unlike the previous voice, so strangely that the other gentleman and lady looked startled: "Zounds, it is the walk of the Straw Dealers." He said it in a weird tone and his whole attitude was changed. He used the expression, zounds, twice. I told him he was mistaken, that the walk of the Straw Dealers is what we call to-day the Street of Paris. He answered me in the same strange voice: "Zounds, you cannot tell...'

5-0 out of 5 stars Madrigal continues
"Abendlied" is a sequel to "Madrigal." A wanted man, accused of many crimes, including several murders, Erik has been forced to flee Paris. He is accompanied by Anna, who not only loves Erik, but has her own reasons for wanting to avoid the police. The manhunt for Erik intensifies when the body of Raoul's brother Philippe is found in the waters of Erik's underground home at the opera house. Philippe's death apparently occurred after Erik's departure from Paris, and is ruled accidental by the police, but Raoul is convinced that Erik murdered Philippe. Driven by fear that Erik will return for Christine, who mourns the loss of her "Angel of Music," and grief for Philippe, Raoul remains determined to see Erik brought to justice. When a ruthless bounty hunter, Loup, arrives at the de Chagny estate asking questions about Anna, Raoul hires him to capture Erik, dead or alive.

When Erik learns of Philippe's death, he reacts with great sorrow. Through flashbacks, details of the surprising relationship between Erik and Philippe are revealed. And, although he loves Anna, Erik continues to battle his inner demons and fight the madness that threatens to take over his mind and soul as he and Anna search for a safe place to call "home."

As frequently happens in sequels, especially those that are book 2 in a series of 3 books, there are some unanswered questions and "loose ends" at the conclusion of"Abendlied," but rather than causing a sense of frustration for this reader, they have left me wanting more. I'm eagerly awaiting the publication of the next book in the trilogy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Noteworthy Tale about the Phantom
After Christine's confession, Raul hires Loup to find the Phantom (Erik.) Raoul is convinced Erik killed his brother Philippe de Chagny even though evidence proves his brother's death is an accident. Loup agrees to hunt down Erik, but the man has his own personal agenda. He will hunt the Phantom, but his main goal is to capture Anna, the woman with Erik. Her crime was committed when defending her honor and he has every intention to make her pay for it. Also Loup is blackmailing Christine after witnessing a transgression that will threaten the Chagny bloodline.
Christine must deal with her own demons. Is she in love with two men? She tries to hide her confusion, but Raoul senses his wife's unrest. He loves Christine and will do anything to protect her, but his judgment is hampered by his insecurities.

As the manhunt continues, Anna fears Erik will embrace the madness that lurks beneath the surface and will never find the man in madman. Erik falls back to being The Phantom of the Opera and seeks out Christine. Her shocking confession may destroy his relationship with Anna. Erik recalls his association with Comte Philippe de Chagney and what his friendship meant to him, but will the memories be enough to heal him?

Ms. Linforth has written another noteworthy tale about the Phantom. Anna and Erik must learn to trust each other to allow their relationship to flourish. Erik must also learn to put the past behind him before he can accept what Anna offers. In Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera, Philippe is a man of the world and doesn't like Raol's attachment to Christine. Erik later drowns Philippe when the man goes looking for Raoul in the cellars of the opera house. I enjoyed how the author takes the reader back to Erik's life below the opera house to unfold a new tale with the Phantom's friendship with Comte Philippe de Chagney. I don't want to reveal too much of this wonderful tale with a twist to the old story. This is the second book in the series. It does stand alone, but I believe the reader may take pleasure reading Madrigal first to thoroughly enjoy the continue tale of The Phantom of the Opera.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for any devoted Phan
(By the way since amazon doesn't have the pic for this item, it has tightly sewn blue cover. Kind of like how books were published back then where they had blank covers, with just the title on the stem.) Oh and remember this is a comparison review to the musical/movie to the Novel.

Well I'm sure if you've read reviews on other editions of this book then you probably know already that this book isn't very well written. True Gaston Leroux isn' the best writer, but I'm sure if you read books frequently (foresay 2-3 books a month) then you'd beable to "make the book out" and understand it.

The characters are of course Christine, Phantom (Erik) and Raoul. But there's also an added Persian/Daroga during the end of the chapters. (Whom helps Raoul to find Christine in the sewers of the Opera). Now after watching the movie their are some differences. For one thing, Christine seems a more stronger character, not , "the next" Disney Princess. If you never liked Raoul, then you'll undoubteldlyhate him even more. His character seems more weak to where his youth shows, and if you ever thought of him as the brave noble prince descending into Hell to free his Princess; then well...you will never think that of him again. Erik or Phantom's deformity is his whole face. The Persian explains his past and sometimes Erik will make comments about his childhood and his mother. (Theres also a brief chapter in the end that tells of the places he traveled and etc.). Heseems more horrible, not his face exactly, but his personality. Such as when they're explaining his laughter and his response to Christine taking off his mask. I wouldn't say crazy, but, horrible, and terrifying.

Now you must understand they don't go all into the scenes with Erik and Christine.(I, to my dissapointment, found this out.) They do alot with Raoul and Christine, and you go into their childhood sweetheart backround. But theirs only brief appearances of the Phantom throughout most of the story. Even the Masquerade scene, and the fall of the Chandelier. If anything, the events that were all mesmerizing in the musical and movie happened way shorter than expected, while reading. (Webber stretched things out, for his musical).

Now don't let this dissapoint you, its more of a warning of what to expect. Things do get explained, by another character or whatever, eventually sooner or later.

The ending is different (not the big point of no return reprise). In fact they don't do any of that. Yes, true, Christine did save Raoul (and the Persian) but the Phantom never really gave her choice. (She was going to stay with him, or die with him, forever no matter what.) In a word, not as dramatic. But this won't stop you from shedding those tears, I caught a lump in my throat several times while reading the ending passages. But there is good news! The kissing scene (or two kisses on the forehead, I should say) were described excellently. And that was the part when you'd start shedding tears, for they were described from Eriks point of view.

The book was an overall good read. And I recommend it for any devoted Phan. It would be another item to add to your Phantom collection, or for just any plain reader, to have a good read. The ending will tug at your heart, and will leave you knowing the true meaning of tragic love. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, not well-illustrated.
The story is marvelous as ever, and it's even better unabridged.I cannot get enough of our beloved Phantom.I will say, however, that I was disappointed with the illustrations, which were a big reason why I ordered this edition in particular (I own a few different editions). It is also why my review is not a full five stars.

Many of them were rather crudely-drawn, and quite a few were obviously taken from the various films that have come out since the book. The publishers would have found many more elegant and faithful depictions of Leroux's Erik on Deviantart, and likely wouldn't have had to pay the artists half as much, either!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
I love the original novel of the Phantom writen by Leroux, and this edition is just wonderful. The pictures with different styles and artists are just great and there's even a little new story at the end.
A great book for Phantom collectors.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Should Be the OFFICIAL Translation of POTO
"All I ever needed to be good was to be loved for myself", thus Erik pathetically implores his beloved Christine as he tries to convince her to choose him over death.

For those of you who read the original translation and couldn't understand it, or those who've never read Leroux's original story, this book is a must read! Written in concise, easy to understand language, the Lofficiers offer a rendition of Leroux's novel that doesn't lose the original author's investigative, reporter's tone. It renders an in-depth account of Raoul's and Christine's relationship when they knew each other as children and the part Christine's father played during that one summer they spent together by the sea. I also found several places, especially in the beginning of the book, where the dialogue matched that of the 2004 movie. As an example, you will recognize "Little Lotte thought of everything and nothing. A true bird of summer, she glided in the golden rays of the Sun, her blonde hair adorned with the crown of Spring. Her soul was as clear and as blue as her eyes. She cajoled her mother, was kind to her doll, took great care of her dress, her little red shoes and her fiddle, but most of all she loved, when she went to sleep, to hear the Angel of Music..." (Yes, Christine was blonde and blue eyed in the original novel). Raoul is not so much the handsome, debonair hero of the book as he had been in the film. Although he is 21 years old in the book, he is handsome in a sort of effeminate way, a mild mannered, rather naïve young man having been raised, in turn, by his sisters, his aunt, and his elder brother, so it's easy to see where some may view him as a sort of "fop". But by the time the story begins, Raoul has already joined the Navy and had "served with honors aboard the Navy training ship, Borda, and made the customary trip around the world." For all his youth, Raoul is refined and eager, and is madly in love with Christine.

The Phantom is another matter. If all you've been exposed to is the handsome, sensual, lightly deformed phantom of the movie, you may not like this guy. He is literally a monster, not only in his horrific looks, but also in his demeanor. The man is obviously demented...but still, I felt sorry for him. Yet while I felt sorry for him, I couldn't blame Christine for not wanting to stay with him; she being the sympathetic, if not highly exploited, victim.

Another aspect that I liked about the book is that it includes the entire version that Leroux had written, uncut and unabridged. And quite frankly, I'm thankful for the added information. I especially enjoyed reading the musical history of the opera house, and it's interesting to note that the opera house had not one conductor, but six: Gounod, Reyer (for those of you who write phanphics, it looks like the movie's orchestra conductor came straight from Leroux's book - well, his name did anyway), Saint-Saens, Massenet, Guiraud, and Delibes "...each in turn had assumed command of the orchestra and conducted their own works." In fact, Leroux is so thorough in his narrative, and so convincing in his tone, that by the end of the book I found myself thinking, "Oh, my gosh, there really had been a phantom!"

You will find the managers to be as comical as ever (I thought so, anyway). Carlotta is stunningly beautiful, her exquisite voice above reproach (until the Phantom uses his ventriloquism on her), and the Persian a rather mysterious yet highly likable friend of Erik's (possibly the only friend the poor phantom ever had). Other characters, including the famed Mme Giry, also add their unique touch to the story.

Interspersed throughout the book are a variety of artists' renditions of the Phantom, many of them resembling the phantom made famous by Lon Chaney, but there are also a few unique and imaginative versions. And at the very end of the book, the translators offer their own account, entitled "His Father's Eyes", of the Phantom's ominous beginnings; his place of birth being rather ironic given the one who played the Phantom in the 2004 movie. (Or perhaps that was intentional)?

In any case, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I'm happy to add it to my library of Phantom books, especially considering that it's Leroux's own. I, for one, am very glad that I bought this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars ^_^
I found the translation of this volume to be superb and the art smattered throughout was a nice touch. Also, the final part of the book, a musing on how two literary great could be related, was facinating.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Worthy Edtion of the Phantom
J. M. & Randy Lofficier, owners of Black Coat Press, can be consistently counted on to produce quality books. Whether they are all new novels or as in this case, re-translations of books, each one is always a work of art. Such is the case here, which is an unabridged translation of the original novel from 1911 written by Gaston Leroux.

It tells the tale of the tragic events in the Paris Opera House in 1881. It tells of the mysterious figure, occasionally seen, often sensed, but never captured that turned the Opera House into his own personal playground. He stalks some for amusement, others for money, and one for love. When the new Directors make the mistake of angering him, he sets out to claim all that is owed him once and fore all.

In addition to re-translating the original novel, J. M. & Randy Lofficier have included over forty new illustrations by numerous artists unique to this text. Each drawing is a stark vision that captures the pain of the novel. While the styles of presentation vary greatly, almost all depict the Phantom as envisioned by the artist. Those illustrations fit nicely with the novel as well as does the original short story penned by J. M. and Randy Lofficier found at the back of the book. The story attempts to explain the Phantom's dark beginnings. Was it genetics or environment? The question is left open to interpretation.

At 381 pages and with over forty new illustrations, the work stands on its own as a quality novel and one worthy of your collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fitting follow-up to "The Mystery of the Yellow Room".
If you enjoyed "The Mystery of the Yellow Room", you will probably enjoy "The Perfume of the Lady in Black".This novel was very well written by Gaston Leroux (who actually included himself as acharacter in the early pages of the book!).You must read "TheMystery of the Yellow Room" before attempting "The Perfume of theLady in Black", as it is merely a continuation of the events from"Yellow Room". To say that Gaston Leroux has a few surprises instore for you with this book would be an understatement, as he gives newmeanings to the events from the first book. For me to say anyting furtherwould be unfair to a prospective reader. While "The Mystery of theYellow Room" was a five star book without question, "The Perfumeof the Lady in Black" falls just short of that lofty plateau.Forthose who enjoy a well-written mystery, you could scarcely do better thanGaston Leroux. ...
