5-0 out of 5 stars Nice job
When I saw Phantom of the Opera on the shelf. I instantly purchased it and read it... This book is absolutley magnificent. The illustrations are beautiful they show a sense of class and sophistication.. I was very fond of the Series itself (Great Illustreated Classics) I own 61 of those series, and I have no complaint about them they are very fun to read when your angry, sad, happy. or just bored. Great Illustreated Classics are a wonderful source of books for chilldren easy to read and quick, so you can read 3 a day. ( I read about 5), And they are worth every penny I have so go out there and buy yourself some great Illustrated classics. thank you

1-0 out of 5 stars An insult to all bibliophiles
If you love books and Leroux's novel in paticular do not buy this book.Although the cover art promises great things, alas the illustrations remind one of a Barbie coloring book, only not as sophisticated. The less said of the butchering this line of books commonly does to great novels, the better.A much better read would be the version illustrated by Hilderbrant as the novel in itself shouldn't be beyond most young readers. For the very young try the Bullseye or Step Up chillers. Both are excellent reads.

1-0 out of 5 stars Illustrated? If that's what you want to call it....
First of all, I must say that Leroux's original novel is a bit of an obsession with me, so whenever I find another edition, illustrated or otherwise, I buy it.It's my "Catcher in the Rye" as it were...so when I found this "illustrated" edition...I jumped on it and bought it.I was truly disappointed with the pictures...I've seen better art from Jr. High students.Who would put such garbage in their book? Not only were the pictures poor...so was the "abridged" text.If you want a "simplified" version to read...read Lowell Bair's adapted version.
Poor take on The Phantom of the Opera...and only a good copy to put in one's "Phantom of the Opera Library" should you be a hardcore fan that must have every edition published (as I do).

Product Description
"Oxford Bookworms" offer students at all levels the opportunity to extend their reading and appreciation of English. There are six stages, taking students from elementary to advanced level. At the lower stages, many of the texts have been specially written for the series, to provide elementary and lower-intermediate students with an introduction to real reading in English. At the higher stages, most of the books have been adapted from works originally published for native speakers. The language controls used in "Oxford Bookworms" are based on a syllabus specially created for the series by Tricia Hedge. This takes account of the more traditional approaches to grading and recent research into the nature of reading difficulty. The approximate vocabulary count for each stage is: Stage 1 - 400 words; Stage 2 - 700 words; Stage 3 - 1000 words; Stage 4 - 1400 words; Stage 5 - 1800 words; Stage 6 - 2500 words. All stages have exercises for classroom or private use, plus a supporting glossary to help students with vocabulary. Illustrations are used, especially at the lower stages, to help comprehension. ...
Product Description

A half-crazed, disfigured musician living in the labyrinthine cellars of the Paris Opera House creates a series of strange and mysterious events to further the career of a beautiful young singer. Leroux's tale of the "phantom" is widely regarded as one of the most famous of all horror stories, yet that fame is based primarily on various film and stage versions. The book -- often neglected and seldom in print -- offers readers the original and complete saga of this immortal figure.

Product Description
The Secret Horrors of the Opera House. It is ironic that out of the dozen of books written by the French novelist Gaston Leroux, the one that has given him immortality is the classic of horror called ""The phantom of the opera"". It tells the story of a disfigured musical genius (Gerard Butler) who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris opera house to take revenge against the world, until the day that he falls in love for a beautiful singer, who changes completely the course of his life. This small masterpiece have been taken to the theatre, to the musical comedy and numerous times to the movies, with treatments that are equally classic, since every director has given different interpretations to the character, from turning him into a symbol of the artist pushed back by the society up to the representation of the most incredible psychological aberrations. Whatever the version, this is one of the most entertaining novels of the kind and therefore its eternal popularity. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelente

5-0 out of 5 stars NO ES IGUAL QUE EL MUSICAL

... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent plot
The plot by itself is very intriguing; an attempted murder has been committed; in a sealed room and the culprit has vanished without a trace.Loroux keeps you on the hinge; by feeding the reader with tid-bits of information which keeps the curiosity and suspense elevated through out.He does not reveal everything the detective is thinking all at once; but leaves the reader creating their own theory, based on all the clues that are collected. In the end all the knots are tied. The novel is also about the rivalry between detective Frederick Larson and a young investigative journalist, Rouletabille. Larson finds a suspect who is put on trial, only to have him cleared by Rouletabille, who dramatically reveals the identity of the real murderer. The Mystery of the Yellow Room is a novel which consciously tries to outdo the traditional detective novel with classic intellectual conundrums.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy it if you can find it!!
I've been looking for this story for many years, as it's always listed as being one of the first in the locked room mystery genre, and one of the best. I am so happy to have found it (thank you, internet!!) as I was not disappointed.

Let me say upfront, that if you read Phantom of the Opera, and were disappointed in the writing style, do not shy away from The Mystery of the Yellow Room. I can hardly believe the same author wrote both stories. It's a great read, it flows well, and I could hardly put it down. The characterization and style are very similar to Conan Doyle's works. The locked room mystery kept me guessing. Ultimately all the clues were there, and the ending was "fair", even if I was suprised. I wish there were more tales about our detective, as this first book was fabulous! The ending had a very good twist to it, and is a precursor to some of Dame Agatha Christie's works.

In summary, a great read, a great mystery plot, and decent characterizations. This is worth finding, to see a classic in the locked room genre. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic French pulp from the author of Phantom of the Opera
Heedless of the fate that has befallen his predecessor, Captain Maxime d'Aulnay bravely takes his seat on the Académie Française, makes his inaugural speech and promptly drops dead. The curse of the Haunted Chair has struck again! Both deaths could be rationally explained where it not for the extraordinary coincidence of their timing on the very day if not the exact moment of their inauguration to the 40th position in the Academy, each of them following the delivery of a mysterious, vaguely threatening letter believed to have come from the enigmatic Eliphas de Saint-Elme de Taillebourg de la Nox, occultist, cabbalist, expert in ancient Egyptian lore, the author of 'Surgery of the Soul'. Blackballed by the Academy, rumours abound that Eliphas has used the secrets of Toth to seek revenge, placing a curse on anyone who dares to take the Chair in his place. Who will dare to put themselves forward for a position that could mean almost certain death?

Leroux's Le fauteuil hanté is delightfully silly stuff. Ancient Egyptian curses, walking boxes loitering on the dark, misty streets of Paris, deadly rays of light, killing melodies, menacing giants and ferocious hounds - the life of an academic is a dangerous one indeed! Leroux has tremendous fun at the expense of academics, ridiculing their stuffiness, snobbery and minds closed to anything that falls outside the boundary of their rational knowledge, but really, The Haunted Chair is just a great situation for a classic pulp crime adventure and it fits the bill extremely well. Very entertaining. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Le fond sans la forme
... Read more

These Classic French novels include Les Étranges Noces De Rouletabille, Le Fauteuil Hanté, Le Mystere De La Chambre Jaune, and Le Parfum De La Dame En Noir.According to Wikipedia, "Gaston Louis Alfred Leroux (May 6, 1868 [1] – April 15, 1927) was a French journalist and author of detective fiction. In the English-speaking world, he is best known for writing the novel The Phantom of the Opera (Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, 1910), which has been made into several film and stage productions of the same name, such as the 1925 film starring Lon Chaney; and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.
