3-0 out of 5 stars Shakespear 101 for kids!
If you want your younger kids to read Shakespeare, then this is the kind of book you want to get. Some of the nuances of the writer are lost in this translation, but you get the basic idea of what the story is about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for family reading hour
The Lambs' classic book is an ideal read-aloud text and a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young readers and listeners. We've found it suitable for our older children especially -- ages 7 and up.Each "tale" takes around fifteen minutes to read, and although some of the vocabulary is rather elevated, vocal inflection and emphasis can aid comprehension. The Lambs have done a commendable job of capturing the drama of each of Shakespeare's plays in a 10-12 page narrative format.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great First Step
I have used this with now seven children for home schooling. No, it's not Shakespeare's Shakespeare, it's Charles and Mary Lamb's rendition.

It is a great way to introduce the Shakespeare to a younger child as a way to get a grasp of the story. Then we read the real Shakespeare version and you are able to enjoy the story and the way Shakespeare writes without trying to figure out the characters, plot etc.

And I might add, it is a good way to become familiar with the tales if you are an adult too.

So, my advice is to read this first and then most definitely read the real author himself.

1-0 out of 5 stars tales from shakespeare
no table of contents.
horrendous to navigate.
frankly shameful that they would sell it this way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tales From Shakespeare: 20 of the plays retold in prose for children by the Lamb siblings
The Bard meets the Lambs. Charles and Mary Lamb wrote "Tales from Shakespeare" in 1807. The book retold twenty of the plays in prose being geared at children. Children who read the stories today would need to be very bright and advanced in their reading comprehension. Many of the sexual scenes and several of the subplots in these complex plays have been removed by Mary and Charles.
The Lambs were siblings who were plagued with mental problems throughout their sad lives. Mary stabbed her mother to death during an insane episode. The courts allowed her to live at home with her brother Charles who was a lowly clerk at the East India Office. Charles is famous for his essays though Mary wrote the majority of the play summaries in this classic book Mary wrote on 14 of the comedies and romances while Charles provided chapters on the tragedies of Hamlet, Othello, King Lear.
Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet and Timon of Athens.
The book is short but essential in giving the reading a quick review of the plays. It is easy to get lost in the complex plots and the Elizabethan language and poetry in the plays. This book makes it easy to understand the basic plots and characters in the tales. The book is an introduction to Shakespeare; it no way is it designed to replace the plays; the purpose is to whet the desire to read and see Shakespeare acted on the stage.
Even veteran Shakespearians such as your reviewer found delight in this small book. I will turn to it often to refresh my memory of who is who and what is going on in the Shakespearean universe. The Lambs' book is essential reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tales from Shakespeare Student Edition
This book was great for my 6th grader. It was written in a way that did not bore him to death and there were just enough pictures to keep him interested.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lambs' book is a classic.
For students of Shakespeare, particularly middle school, reading the stories based on 13 of Shakespeare's plays, is a useful tool. Granted, some of the language sounds stilted by today's ear, but it is more accessible than the plays for those unschooled in Elizabethen English.

Product Description
1905. A biography of the English essayist and poet, Charles Lamb (pen name Elia), who studied at Christ's Hospital where he formed a lifelong friendship with Samuel Taylor Coleridge. When he was twenty years old Lamb suffered a period of insanity. His sister, Mary Ann Lamb, had similar problems and in 1796 murdered her mother in a fit of madness. Mary was confined to an asylum but was eventually released into the care of her brother. Lamb became friends in London with a group of young writers who favored political reform including Percy Bysshe Shelley, William Hazlitt and Leigh Hunt. Among his most remembered works are his collection Essays of Elia, the poem "The Old Familiar Faces," and the essay "Dream Children." He also wrote Tales from Shakespeare in collaboration with his sister and The Adventures Of Ulysses were valuable retellings of classic works for children. Lamb's critical comments in Specimens of English Dramatic Poets Who Lived About the Time of Shakespeare are among the classics of English criticism.

Contents: The Story of His Life; His Principal Writings; The Essays of Elia; His Style; Chronological List of Works; Posthumous Works and Collected Edition; and Biography and Criticism.--This text refers to the Paperback edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good enough
This product served its purpose. I needed this book for my Marketing class and I am doing good now because of it. It is in the condition that was discribed. I give it a thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars great text books for great prices
thanks so much for supplying a quality product.text books are so expensive and many times are only used for reference it is such a shame that college students are forced to pay such high prices for something they hardly use.

2-0 out of 5 stars Lori L
Not wild about this book. Thoughts don't seem to follow a linear fashion. There seems to be a lot of looping around and unnecessary fillers. I found myself drifting off and losing sight of the concept. I think the subject is interesting but I wish my instructor had chosen a better book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Wordy and unnecessary
I am certain that any professor who recommends this book is a sadist of some sort. The book is a laborious read, more so than any other textbook I can remember. At times, I'm positive Lamb is merely dawdling and filling up pages to reach some sort of 30 page chapter quota.

The pro is that there are many things covered in the book, and very extensively. The con is that it is much too extensive, my classmates and I found ourselves skimming through things that were just not necessary. Things that can be explained in a small paragraph at most, take up one and half pages. The authors tend to go on, piling up with multiple facts and situations to the point that the reader no longer remembers what was the purpose of the chapter. And definitions and concepts explained can be easily rewritten to communicate better to students.

Another problem is the lack of a chapter summary. In a book this tedious and wordy, it would be extremely helpful to quickly review and refresh everything in the chapters. The authors should have taken their own advice and researched their market, asking what students want, and how to speak to them, because this book is filled with terms and explanations that need clarification. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully produced - shame about the editing
Lamb is one of the great secrets of the nineteenth century. He's witty, spiky, elusive and puzzling. His essays lull you into a false sense of charm and nostalgia, but within them are sharp and penetrating comments on human behaviour. They run alongside great Romantic works like Samuel Taylor Coleridge's 'This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison' or William Wordsworth's 'The Prelude' as wonderful, moving pieces of autobiography and self-examination. Plus they are beautifully written, with their descriptions of forgotten places in London, the slowly decaying 'South Sea House', for instance, or the pastoral green of the Inner Temple Gardens, hidden away in the midst of the capital. And behind them, always, is a sense that these nostalgic descriptions are all the more enjoyable because they are hard-won; they come out of the tragedy and courage of Lamb's personal life, and his lifelong struggle with his own depression and with his sister's serious mental illness. They also have a sharply political edge to them - they were published in the 'London Magazine' alongside essays by Hazlitt and De Quincey, and while they seem at first glance simply charming, they often slyly comment on contemporary prejudice.

Lamb hasn't been popular through the 20th century - an attack on him by F. R. Leavis and his disciples in the 1930s was the start of the rot, and the gradual decline of the essay has meant he's been almost completely overlooked (though not by the Charles Lamb Society, who are still going in London and meet regularly for lectures - and for Lamb's birthday drinks). So a new edition of Lamb is really to be celebrated, especially one as beautifully produced as this.

But alas! This is a lovely edition, but it has one huge flaw for me. There are only 27 essays here and there should be 28: the edition claims to be a reprint of 'Essays of Elia', but it leaves out one of Lamb's most important essays, 'Imperfect Sympathies'. There's not even a note to explain this omission. Why is this important? Well, 'Imperfect Sympathies' is one of the most difficult, challenging, shocking of Lamb's essays - it starts off with a funny skit on why Elia doesn't like Scotchmen: 'I have been trying all my life to like Scotchmen, and am obliged to desist from the experiment in despair'. Scotchmen don't get jokes. They're terribly literal:

"I have a print of a graceful female after Leonardo da Vinci, which I was showing off to [a Scotchman]. After he had examined it minutely, I ventured to ask him how he liked MY BEAUTY (a foolish name it goes by among my friends) -- when he very gravely assured me, that "he had considerable respect for my character and talents" (so he was pleased to say), "but had not given himself much thought about the degree of my personal pretensions."

But then, terribly, the essay takes a darker turn, as Elia voices prejudices about Jewishness and black people. I've always read this essay as a reflection on the nature of prejudice. It's not LAMB who's voicing these opinions - it's Elia, and he's doing so (I think) to make us see how an innocent sounding joke (against Scotchmen), and a bit of 'harmless' prejudice can be the slippery slope to something much worse - as such, it's very timely.

But it's up to us, surely, to read this difficult essay and decide for ourselves. Simply leaving it out - without any word of acknowledgement - is bad editorial practice (though the notes to this edition, too, are pretty much non-existent). And it's also giving people a false sense of Lamb - a kind of misguided political correctness which actually amounts to admitting that these editors do think Lamb is a racist old bigot and there are some aspects of his writing which we'd just better not mention. Disrespectful to Lamb, and to his readers, I'd say...

5-0 out of 5 stars A good book in search of an appreciative reader?
Charles Lamb's 'Essays of Elia' are a balm to the spirit and a delight to those who love words.

Surely everyone remembers Lamb and his tragic story from high school lit classes, but (perhaps as he intended) his essays transcend the reality of his life and speak to the modern reader. Lamb is erudite; he is funny; he is precise and flamboyant; in a phrase, he is a literary tour de force.

There are twenty-seven well-wrought essays, among them interesting insights on Valentines Day, ears, gallantry, and, of course, his famous discourse on roast pig.

Modern reader do not despair in this age of quick and easy journalism; here's a master at work.

Read, smile, relax!

1-0 out of 5 stars a disappointing scan
The product description for this book advised that the book had been recreated from the original using optical character recognition software. That notice should have been highlighted in flashing red lights. The quality of this publication is exceedingly poor. It's not a typo here and there; it's fraught with typos, strange line breaks, and the inclusion of odd characters. If only one -- just one -- person had bothered to read this book after it had been produced using OCR, the copy could easily have been cleaned up. As it is, the book is practically unreadable. The transcription problems are so numerous that they completely distract from the pleasures of the actual text. In their efforts to keep costs low, the publisher, General Books LLC, has produced a book that is un-buyable -- a complete waste of money. I had hoped to add this classic book to my personal library, but now it's only getting added to my recycling bin. ... Read more

In this charming collectible, a selection of Charles and Mary Lamb’s classic prose retellings of Shakespeare’s plays are beautifully illustrated by acclaimed artist Joëlle Jolivet. The Lambs’ Shakespeare, familiar to readers since the 1800s, gets a modern twist from Jolivet’s vibrant and colorful art; Jolivet re-imagines the princes, royalty, fools, and villains from Shakespeare’s world as colorful, striking characters. From Much Ado About Nothing to Macbeth, each story features pages of illustrations that are both irreverent and wholly appropriate. Enclosed in a die-cut slipcase, the book is the perfect gift for Shakespeare fans at any age. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Several of the Shakespeare plays
My only regret was that i did not know which plays were in the book and now I have to find the one which has the other plays i am looking for.

3-0 out of 5 stars Skip the Lambs and Go Straight to the Source
I purchased this collection because I had heard for years about the Lamb family's adaptation of Shakespeare to make it more suitable for children.I have a two-year-old daughter who enjoys listening to both short stories and chapters from novels such as Stuart Little or The Tale of Despereaux, and even Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-7), and I thought I would love to introduce her to the beauty of Shakespeare at an early age.Unfortunately, I underestimated the difficulty of Victorian English for such a young child.Furthermore, they may have omitted the truly bawdy tales (All's Well that Ends Well?), but who would read those to children any way?The first story, Macbeth, still included plenty of gore and violence, but really, it's Macbeth - how could you possibly convey the horror without the violence?Nevertheless, I feel like if I have to wait until my child is old enough to understand the complex language in this book, she'll probably be old enough by that point to tackle The Bard himself without the Lambs as middlemen. They may have provided a valuable service in their time, but I'm afraid it's obsolete now.In the mean time, we have been enjoying excerpts from Shakespeare in bite-sized pieces in Poetry for Young People: William Shakespeare, edited by David Scott and Marina Kastan.I still wish that I could find a great adaptation of Shakespeare for the elementary school set, but until then we'll retell the stories as best we can and enjoy the sound of the poetry in the Kastan's compilation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Little Volume
I like this edition of the Lambs' retelling of several classic Shakespeare tales. Was written long ago, with old-fashioned language, but not too difficult to grasp. It could be appropriate for a young student, or someone older, like me, who never learned all the Shakespeare stories and characters, and wants to brush up!There are simple illustrations on every page, and at the beginning of each story a drawing of all the characters, with names, (which can get difficult to remember!)Shakespeare is really the Master of Human Nature and human foibles! A family book to treasure.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled
This is a beautifully crafted book. The jacket, the paper, the artwork are all of superior quality.Definitely a collectible-ish type of book. However, be warned:It is not the same Charles and Mary Lamb version as others! Those versions contain 20 abridged tales of Shakespeare's plays; this version only tells 6.I don't rightly remember all of them, but I know "Hamlet", "Midsummer Night's Dream", "Macbeth", and "Romeo and Juliet" were included.

If one is satisfied with just these tales, then I can tell you to buy this book.On the other hand, if you want all 20 tales (as I did), you are better off buying another version.

5-0 out of 5 stars A collectible for all ages
Joelle Jolivet is an internationally-acclaimed illustrator while Charles and Mary Lamb are known for the 1700s prose adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. They join forces in the finely illustrated TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE, a collectible for all ages pairing lovely prose retellings of plays with Jolivet's beautiful drawings. Stories pack in the best of modern and traditional worlds in a selection of highly recommended works. ... Read more
