5-0 out of 5 stars Officer Friendly meet dinosaur town
My preschoolers love this book.It has quite a few safety lessons in it presented in a visually interesting and non-threatening way.A picture speaks 1000 words in this book, the illustrations are great!

5-0 out of 5 stars Safety with a touch of humor
This "safety guide" is a perfect all around book for parents to read and review with children. The text is simple and covers 1-2 page reviews of common places and events that require safe practice. Topics include home, yard, meals, fire, animals, on wheels, playground, camping, car, beach, trips, first aid, cold weather and night safe practices. The illustrations are humorous and make some of the potentially scary ideas not so scary, yet the book still has a serious tone. The pictures clearly illustrate (and parents can certainly discuss them) what the text is saying for both younger nonreaders and the older elementary age readers. And the dinosaur topic is sure to appeal to a broad range of ages. I have purchased or checked out from the library several specific topic safety books (strangers, fire) but this one is a great addition because it includes many subjects not necessarily worthy of an individual book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lionel and His Friends
Among the four stories, the first story, the Imposter, shows how delicate the children's worlds are. Lionel is confused when Max is very nice to others, so he wonders this Max is real Max that he has known. After a question and answer period, they reach a conclusion. "Maybe it's adisease. The kind you only catch at other people's houses." I knowthey always catch this disease. I like the writer's sense of humor in thispart. The languages are short and clear, and the soft watercolor picturesare warm and bright. It's a good choice for beginning readers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars There Once Was a Very Odd School
This clever rhyming book is full of delightful laughter and brings a new twist to sometimes monotonous school experiences. The book's bright and colorful illustration adds to the silliness that author Stephen Krensky depicts in his limericks. The focus of the book is on goofy things that kids often dream up, such as a never ending recess or the mystery food served in the cafeteria. This is a great book for adding humor to any classroom reading experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars There Once Was a Very Odd School
I thought this book was very funny. I thought its use of limericks was a very good way to get information across. It not only provided the reader with some laughs, it would also provide the audience some good laughs as well. There is some realism in this book, but it always keeps you on your toes. The illustrations went well the book. They go along with the humor. I enjoiyed this book thoroughly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to Read Aloud
There Once was a Very Odd School and Other Lunch Box Limericks is actually a really funny book that needs to be read aloud. The book is full of limericks that talk about school, the good, the bad, and the ugly. Some of the limericks are realistic, like the one about the shy boy at school who is only outspoken during guym.Others are very fictional, like the one about the teacher from another planet who turns students into statues. While the book is not organized in any particular way, the poems are still humorous and would be fun to read all at once, or individually.

4-0 out of 5 stars There once was a very odd school
There once was a very odd school. Written by Stephen Krensky, Illustrated by Tamara Petrosino. As a parent of two young children and a teacher in training. I really liked this book. The pages were well done and creative. I liked the rhyming that Stephen Krensky placed into the story. The story has indidvual rhymes that are short and fun, but all are related to school. I can understand why this book received the "Childrens Choice" award. I recommend this book not only to children, but to parents and teachers as well. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not In My House!
To quote a line from the book: "Uh-oh!" is right. I frequently choose Early Readers such as What A Mess! (a STEP Into Reading book intended for Preschool to Grade 1) even though my girls (ages 3 ½ and 2) are not yet learning to read. The patterned text + playful kids + pets seemed ideal for my own little mess makers.

BUT...I thought two of the illustrations were irresponsible."Dennis" is drawing pictures on the wall with his crayons."Lee" is using Mama's lipstick to paint a clown face.I've got enough problems without giving my girls the impression that such behavior is acceptable.

That said, I am sure your emergent reader is old enough to know better and will enjoy solving the mystery of the muddy footprints - right down to the surprise ending!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!
I bought this book for my 5 year old, and he was able to read the entire thing himself the very first time - and he was so proud of himself! It contains many of the "sight words" they are teaching him in Kindergarten, and the other words are all easy to sound out. The story line itself very cute and 3 year old couldn't wait until his brother got to the end to see what happens! ... Read more

What are girls good for?

Nellie Bly wasn't always Nellie Bly. First she was Elizabeth Cochrane, a shy girl from Cochran's Mills, Pennsylvania.
