Vince Luca is just like any other high school guy.His best friend, Alex, is trying to score vicariously through him; his brother is a giant pain; and his father keeps bugging him to get motivated. There is just one thing that really sets him apart for other kidsæhis father happens to be the head of a powerful crime organization.Needless to say, while Vince's family's connections can be handy for certain things-like when teachers are afraid to give him a bad grade as they can put a serious crimp in his dating life. How is he supposed to explain to a girl what his father does for a living? But when Vince finally meets one who seems to be worth the trouble, her family turns out to be the biggest problem of all.Because her father is an FBI agent-the one who wants to put his father away for good.Amazon.com Review
Vince Luca, 17, has a problem. His wealthy family runs the, uh, vending machine business in New York, and Vince is determined not to be part of it. Especially after a hot date is ruined when he finds that his older brother Tommy has conducted some business with Jimmy the Rat and hidden the messy and temporarily unconscious body in the trunk of Vince's car. His dad, the King of the Mob, is reasonable, sensible, lots of fun, gives great presents to his kids--and his name strikes the hearts of other mobsters to stone.

Although Vince keeps a low profile at school, his family connection brings him unwanted advantages, like the birthday Porsche that gets him arrested on stolen vehicle charges, or the football game in which he makes touchdown after touchdown because word has gotten around and nobody is willing to tackle him. Even private conversations at home have to be carried on in the basement because the FBI has bugged the house and an agent is always listening. Vince's life is inextricably tangled up with the family business, no matter how hard he tries to stay out of it. How can he show them he's serious? Then he meets Kendra, and when she innocently reveals that her father's an FBI agent--that FBI agent--it's a match made in heaven. He thinks.

Gordon Korman, author of (No More Dead Dogs) and over 30 other witty YA novels, is at his best in this Sopranos-style spoof about a teen's home life with the Mob. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Son of the Mob
I would recommend this book to a friend because once you get past the slow start, the book is very captivating. The author surprises you with events that you would never even think of happening, to make the story interesting. For example on his first real date he went to grab some blankets from the trunk only to find them wrapped around a beaten body!"I pop the trunk, reach in, and freeze.I almost choke on my lungs, which have leaped up the back of my throat. There's the blanket alright - wrapped around the unconscious body of some guy!"

Another thing that made this a great book was the believable and realistic characters , which makes it easier to visualize. For example, the main character, Vince, is just an average high school guy who is trying to stay away from his father's "Vending Machine Business", which was just the front for his mob.Another believable character is Kendra, his girlfriend, who has a Father in the FBI agency. This causes problems in the future for Vince, which you will have to read the book to figure out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I ordered!
It was sent within the time frame indicated and in perfect condition. I am glad I can add it to my collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Story, Good Writing, Good Fun
Just like any other seventeen-year-old, Vince Luca has problems. His best friend Alex can't get a date so he lives his love life vicariously through Vince. The problem is, Vince isn't doing so well in the date department either. Problem number two? Vince's older brother Tommy is a hothead and a real pain in Vince's neck. Even when he means well, Tommy tends to screw up Vince's life.

Tommy opted to drop out of high school and join their father's `vending machine business.' His father's business - that's Vince's biggest problem and it's a not-so-normal one. Anthony "Honest Abe" Luca is the president of Brothers Vending Machine - and one of the most powerful Mob bosses in New York. Vince loves his dad, but he hates what `Honest Abe' does for a living.

Even though Vince's dad respects his decision to keep out of the vending machine business, that business has a way of intruding on every aspect of Vince's life. So even though Alex keeps reminding him that, "it's my love life too," Vince doesn't think it's worth it to explain his father's life style (or to try and keep it a secret) just to take some girl out on a date.

All that changes when Vince meets Kendra Bightly. He feels a connection to Kendra that he's never felt with anyone else. There's just one tiny problem: Kendra's dad is the FBI agent in charge of the ongoing investigation into Vince's dad. Trying to date Kendra without her dad hearing about it on a wire-tap, let alone trying to keep the family business a secret from her, may be the biggest problem Vince has ever faced.

4-0 out of 5 stars SCIENCE PROJECTSARE NOT PETS!
In the chicken doesn't skate a kid named Milo Neal(who moved from L.A. to Minnesota), has a science project to do for his sixth grade class. When he decides to do it on a chicken, everybody wants to make it a class pet. Everybody ignores him and someone new takes the chicken home each weekend.
Zachary Gustafson loves to write movie scripts. He thinks that he will never be able to get it to a person in the movie business, until he meets Milo. Milo is the son of the famous Victor Neal(a great scientist who has his own T.V. show, and he has won several emmy awards). Zachary thinks that if he becomes Milo's bestfriend he can give Milo some of his scripts to give to his dad, to give to some big Hollywood producer. So Zachary tries to become best friends with Milo, thinking that if they were friends Milo would give some of Zachary's scripts to him. But the truth be told, Milo doesn't like Zach.
The Ranger hockey team is 0-5 and they need a miracle to win any of their games. Then the Chicken Henrietta appeared at one of their games and they won it! The team thinks that the Chicken is good luck. Just when everybody gets really excited about having the chicken, Milo must compete the final phase for his project.

4-0 out of 5 stars The chicken doesn't skate
The book the chicken doesn't skate is almost about a chicken who's name is Hanrita and one boy who'y name is Milo. Milo uses chicken for his science expiriament and the chicken is luck charm in his hockey game. As the story goes on Milo want to show chickens life cycle, so at the end he has to cook her and eat her, but his friends say that they have to think of a plan to save the chicken. The funniest thing l liked was when the chicken got stuck on a tree and someone called 911 and said there's a Hanrita stuck on a tree. When 911 came they starded laufing because they thought that Henrita was a girl, not a chicken. They got her down and it was fun. In the end Milo showed expiriment by not cooking her, but that chicken got egg and little chicken ws born. This book was fun and I think people who like hockey should read it because it was that chicken was luck in the game, but in the real world there is no charm luck in the game. Its how good is the team and its hard to win with luck.

RADIO FIFTH GRADE is a lively adventure about a group of fifth graders who host a radio show.Benjy is dedicated to excellent journalism, but he discovers that's not always easy when you're working with a group of amateurs.

The kids have a pretty free hand with their programming because their advisor, Mr. Morenz, usually has his nose deep in some sci-fi thriller.Only Mr. Whitehead, the show's sponsor and owner of a local pet shop called Our Animal Friends, seems interested in what the kids broadcast. His sole interest in the programming is to demand that his advertising dollars turn into more people spending more money in his store.

The radio show normally includes things like school news, student stories, and some crazy editorial comments, but when the fifth grade teacher wins the lottery and leaves her job, things change. The new fifth grade instructor, Ms. Panagopoulos, arrives and their educational environment changes dramatically. She begins something she calls "seminar" and expectations of student performance increase.

Fortunately for the students, Benjy figures out a way for the radio show to help them with their grades. It's genius, really, but what if Ms. Panagopoulos finds out?

Written a bit earlier in Gordon Korman's career (1989), RADIO FIFTH GRADE still rings true today.Readers will find the story entertaining, and it might even inspire unique hands-on classroom activities.

You will enjoy this book as much as candy. Benjy and his great friends from school are radio broadcasters. Benjy's class are going to have an exremly hard history test. They get the questions from the teacher's desk and ask them on the radio to prepare for the test. They give weird prizes like turtle food. So read this book because it truly is as good as candy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still lusting after Gordon Korman
I met Gordon Korman when I was 11 years old in Germany. He had achieved everything I wanted: to write a book by 7th grade. And Radio Fifth Grade was my favorite. These kids were funny, smart, had initiative, and always figuring out how to get the things that they needed in an adult world that wasn't too sensitive. Today I actually work in radio, and I still remember this book, what it was like to be inspired at a young age, and remembering all of the oppressive details of childhood. A witty, insightful, and hilarious portrayal of kids.

Benjy Driver is the star on a radio station called 'Kidsveiw'. When he and his friends get a new teacher who gives out HARD homework, Benjy decides to ask the homework questions on the radio and get the answers. He needs to be careful that his teacher doesn`t listen and find out, though. So Benjy and his faithful friends try to keep their teacher from listening to her radio. Lots more happens. I really liked this book, because it is VERY funny. If you are looking for a funny book, this is a great recomendation. It is one of my favourite books, and if you read it, it will most likely be your favourite, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars The fifth grade radio show is a disaster.
The author of my book,Radio Fifth Grade, is Gordon Korman. His books do not tell the meaning of life. The main character of this book is Benjy Driver. He is the star of the fifth grade radio show called Kidsview. He isfunny and very impatient. He has short, curly, dark brown hair. Thefifth grade radio show's new Mascot of The Week,Winston Churchill theparrot, won't talk. Benjy's teacher,Mrs. Gucci, wins $8,300,000.00 and movesto Honolulu leaving Benjy and his class with a new teacher called Ms.Panagapoulos.Last but not least, the school bully, Brad Jaworski, keepswriting stories about two kittens named Fuzzy and Puffy and thinkseverybody likes his stories when he reads them on the radio. Thisstory takes place at Centennial Park School. I thought this book wasfunny because Winston Churchill kept saying wierd things. I really likedthis book and would like to read more books by Gordon Korman. I havesome questions about Gordon Korman and his books: I wonder how muchbooks Gordon Korman has made? I wonder if Gordon Korman is going tomake more books? What does Gordon Korman do in his spare time? Will Gordon Korman ever make books about himself? When is GordonKorman's birthday? Gordon Korman has made books about two boys namedBruno and Boots, but I wonder if he will ever make a new book about themwith a new character? Will Gordon Korman ever make a book about aretold fairy tale? How much copies of each book does Gordon Kormanmake? Does Gordon Korman make books about his friends or enemies? Does he have a book all about an animal or will he make one? HasGordon Korman ever made a book all in another language? That is theend of my book report on Radio Fifth Grade. 4-0 out of 5 stars Valuable lession, I fib you not
Zoe Bent is a liar, and finding life in the 3rd grade very hard. Soon her fibs have turned her whole class against her, and she is feeling frustrated. It has reached a point that even when she tells the truth no one believes her. But she lies because she thinks she has nothing to say; other children wear better clothes, are great at art, are stronger, and she thinks telling big tales will be the only way she can get attention. However, she soon realizes that fibbing is making her life more and more complicated.

This is a great book for young children, in part because children do not need to be taught to lie - most just do it at some point. But this book will teach them the implications about becoming known as a liar. It also teaches them that what matters most is what is inside them not what they say or do. Therefore it is a great book with a valuable lesson.

The book I readis called Liar LiarPants On Fire. This book is about Zoey who lies so much that no one believes her even if she tries to tell the truth. After reading the book I think if you lie too much eventually no one will believe you ever again, but if you tell the truth people will believe you.Zoey changes a lot because in the beginning Zoey lies and in the end she stops because her friend comes over and sees that she is telling the truth. Before I read Liar Liar Pants on Fire I thought if you lied no one will believe you ever again. Now I think if you just tell the truth kids will start to believe you again. I recommend this book to boy and girls in 2 grade because it will teach the person not to lie, self to text to the middle kid in the family like an 8 or 7 year old.

4-0 out of 5 stars My son enjoys these books
My son does not enjoy spending a lot of time reading so when he finds books he's interested in I buy all of them in the series just to keep him reading.39 Clues is one of those books. He seems to enjoy them and it hasn't been as big a struggle as usual to keep him reading over the summer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a young reader
I know other reviewers have given this series a very low rating. They could be written better but you have to remember the age group that these are written for. I think the series is a great buy since it does get my daughter to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hot on the trail of the clues
One False Note take us on the second leg of Dan and Amy's quest to discover all 39 clues. This time they are headed to Austria to figure out what Mozart has to do with their heritage and the mystery that has take over their lives.

Dan, Amy, and Nellie, their trusted and so cool au pair are hot on, the trail of the next clue, with Saladin in tow. On top of figuring out the clues, they are puzzled by whatever it is that is making Saladin, their late grandmother's cat, scratch himself silly and refuse to eat.

In this adventure Dan and Amy uncover yet another secret fortress used by their diabolical, and very artisitc, relatives to thwart the Cahill's discovery of useful information.

We learn about Mozart and his sister and several links between the great musician and other famous people. And who knew that Mozart's sister was a musician herself?

One False Note is a good read, not as good as the first book, but still full of action. One thing I didn't so much like was the constant bickering between Dan and Amy. Even for brother and sister it almost overshadowed the story. And the historical information is a lot more blatant in this one and not made as interesting.

2-0 out of 5 stars reading to continue
This series started off great with the first book but this book shows a vast change in the Cahills personalities. They have turned into whiners and thieves. It is hard to cheer for the underdogs when they are stealing clues and information from others or tailing them. The first book definitely drew me in, setting up likeable characters and the "villians".With this book I feel like I just have to get through it to get me to the next one. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars wow
Gordon Korman has created one of the most easiest reads that interests adults and children. I read this book multiple times since it came out when I was thirteen and each time I get swept into the exciting characters and plot. It is like the 1st season of LOST without all the hardcore questions and supernatural activty. More in the sense that every bad thing that could possibly happen while stranded on an island, happens. These books are quick and fun and basically, amazing. Buy them. Now.

Island
By Mick

Island was an amazing book. I've read 2 other series of Gordan Korman but this one was definitely the best. It's about 6 kids who either have behavioral problems or "If there to good at everything and then mess up once and their parents hate them". They're all sent on a program chartering a new course. This program is where you get on a sail boat an guam and sail out into open ocean. One of the characters, Luke, was really at what had happened to him(Convicted of possetion of a gun) which he was framed for. He meets a brother and a sister, named will and Lyssa, convicted for fighting too much. When luke meets Will he takes a liking of him. The boat is really small but it had 2 caretakers, Captain James Cascadden and First mate Mr. Radford. Captain James was a wise, tall, and leathery faced. He was a quiet man but Will, Lyssa, and Luke took a liking to him. Mr. Radford was a mean grumpy man that looked like he would murder anyone that got in his way, which in away he ends up doing. At the next port The boat picks up 3 more kids, Charla, JJ Lanes, and Lan. Charla is the one that's good at doing everything but failed at a sport and her parents hate her, JJ Lanes that is a spoiled movie star's son. He stole a motorcycle and wrecked someone's house, and finally Lan, the boy who is an obsessed T.V watcher that remembers everything he sees. They set off and were at the mercy of the sea. It was getting farther into the trip when they were informed that a hurricane was coming their way. After the hurendous storm the boats mast was torn, the boat was slowly sinking, and the captain was dead. They tried to pump the water out but they couldn't. Soon the small engine was under water and out of order. They were shipwrecked. The night after the storm Mr. Radford abandoned the 6 kids in the 16 foot small dingy with most of the food. The kids tried fixing the motor but they messed up and blew the boat up. They all managed to escape and were all heading towards a small tropical island that wasn't on the map. They washed ashore with will who was in a coma. Only charla, Luke, Lan, and Will made it first. They soon discovered the Island was an old military base where they top secretly made atomic bombs and the biggest one was deactivated under ground. They also discovered that very bad people were trading illegal animal parts there. Now they were ship wrecked and in danger. Finally Lyssa and JJ washed a shore in a luxurious life raft. Will had awoken and had amnesia and thought the first four were kidnappers. With dangerous people and wills health dangerously getting worse, what are they going to do.
This heart ponding story was the best three books I've ever read.

Island

I purchased these books for my 10 year old who had them in her classroom. This is her review. She highly recommends them for her age group. They are exciting, suspenseful, and really enjoyable. She really couldn't put them down until she had finished all 3 of the series! All of the kids in her class are reading the books. She would recommend them to anyone who likes to read adventure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Darien's Review
Island by Gordon Korman is a suspense thriller, about six kids who have gone on a boat trip to learn the importance of teamwork, over the summer. During their trip, a terrible storm hits and their boat is destroyed and they are thrown into the sea. It focuses on Luke, a twelve-year-old boy who has trouble working with others. On the boat he meets J.J., a brat son of a millionaire, Ian, a T.V. nerd, Charla, Ian's perfectionist sister, Will, a nice boy he befriends, and Lyssa. This series tells the tale of how Luke has to befriend the others and survive after his ship is wrecked.
The book is fun, joyful, and sad at times. It's an example of how people band together to save themselves and overcome anything. This book is definitely worth reading, with its descriptive scenes and characters. This is only the first of the three part series. Anyone who loves adventure will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh how I laughed...
What could be better than a conspiracy theorist twin working at a hotel who suspects everybody of something? A conspiracy theorist working at a hotel where a spy is staying. As usual, Korman ties everything together at the end -- I would read one of his books /just/ to watch that happen -- in a terrific (and vastly funny) way.

The characters are great; I expected to have a bit of trouble keeping track of them, but they quickly distinguished themselves. As usual, Korman shows us the "crazy" character mainly from the perspective of the "sane" one (doubly hilarious since they are twins, and mistaken for each other). This is just a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This book is just simply fabulous. It is hilarious and the two twins are perfect characters for the book.Gordon Korman did an excellent job writing this book.I can't believe how magnificently written this book was. This book is and always will be one of my favorite books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nose Pickers From Outerspace
Nose pickers from outer space is a very funny book by Gordan Korman. It's about this boy who is an exchange student from"Pan" in Chicago, named Stan Mflxnys. He was a weird little kid, when Devin Hunter went to pick him up from the airport there was Stan sitting on the luggage carousel. In this book Devin has all of these rules that he follows, some to be "cool".but this kid Stan always wore a tie, and that was rule number twenty-one: no ties.another weird thing about Stan was that he was able to understand devins dog Fungus the cockerspaniel. When Stan went to school and was introduced by the teacher,he was standing in the front of the classroom and he stuck his finger up his nose. he was weird, and plus that, when they were both at lunch Devin was even more humiliated because instead of eating the pizza that the cafateria was serving he ate the paper plate. Stan wasn't your average kid, when he was washing dishes, he completed the task in a second. Also most of the time Devin saw stan he would have his finger up his nose, Devin was curious. So that night, he put a mirrior to Stans face and looked up it, WOW!! it had buttons and looked like a laptop, but up his nose.Just then, there was a UFO out side of the room, and Stan was waking up.So Devin went to hide, but saw stan go out to greet the aliens. They looked exactaly like him(nerdy with a tie).Stan was an alien from Pan, a planet far away from the earth, and there were very smart people their, the Smarty pants, and the Grand Pant. Anyway the rest of the book talks about Stan almost getting his big secret out, but the thing is Stan has to get a replacement part for his nose,or else the weird things that were happening around the town might have been traced back to Stan. This is a great book, if you like fun out of this world books, or books that are just strange this is a book i recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eugene: Gordon Korman has done a "Bang Up" Job!
Devin Hunter has a unique experience with his foriegn exchange buddy. He always thought he was wierd, and freaks out when he discovers his exchange buddy, Stan from Pan, is an alien with a computerized nose. Devin has to go through a lot of problems with his alien friend.
Wow! Gordan Korman did an excellent job writing this book. "Nose Pickers From Outer Space" is really cool. It entertained me the whole way through, and kept me laughing.Yet, it was pretty easy to read! I loved the catchy title, the humorous pictures, and the overall story.
If you like to laugh, are between the ages of 9-13, and want an easy book report, or want to be entertained, then this is the book for you! I highly reccommend that you read "Nose Pickers from Outer Space".

4-0 out of 5 stars A DEFINITE "BOYS" BOOK
After all the series books for young girls, finally Gordon Korman is giving us "boys" books. It is so hard to find books for my eight year old son but he loved this book, and so did my 41 year old husband!Pure disgusting humor, any boy or anyone who thinks like a boy won't be able to put it down

3-0 out of 5 stars Korman Shows Some Flashes of Old Brilliance
While certainly better than Korman's other 1999 offering, Stars From Mars, Nosepickers from Outer Space is not as good as Don't Care High, I Want to Go Home! or the Bruno & Boots series. The original title of this book, Alien Exchange Student, gives some idea of what it's about- an elementaryschooler's student that he hosts turns out to be from outer space.Whilethe story is reasonably original, many references to current events/peoplewill hurt the book's lasting ability.Furthermore, while the bookdefinitely has many laughs, some of the stretched humor regarding clothingdoesn't work. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Authors for Middle- and High- School Students
I love Gordon Korman's work, and this book was one of my favorites as a kid.Can you imagine a school where none of the students care about anything?Where no one ever goes out for sports, runs for student council, or even knows the principal's name? There are bulletin board announcements still up from fifty years ago, because no one cares enough to take them down.

What happens when a kid who DOES care moves in?And what if he nominates for class president the one kid who really doesn't care AT ALL?Suddenly, Don't Care HS students find themselves doing AND CARING about all kinds of crazy things!Lots of fun!

I wish this book would be turned into a movie.I could imagine Mike Otis being played by Jon Heder a'la 'Napoleon Dynamite'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun
This book is great for young adults, I was sixteen when I read it. I began under what I think is the best possibly condition: I had no idea what it was about or what to expect. Someone had suggested the author to be becase of his humor, so I got a copy of what I could find...let's just say my copy didn't exactly have a cover.

I was hooked from the start and finished the whole thing in a few straight hours, which is a rare occurance for me. Gordon Korman really knows how to spin an engaging and creative story, with plenty of laughs and an interesting cast of characters. The story is about a weird high school full of kids who just don't care, they're semi-zombies oblivious to almost everything around them, because they just don't care. I know it sounds crazy. Our hero is new in town and has just transferred to this stange school. I won't spoil the rest for you, the surprises are what make the story so much fun to read. I'll definitely be grabbing any other young adult books I can find by the author.

4-0 out of 5 stars High school Life
Don't Care High, a novel written by Gordon Korman, is very interesting and makes one live the real life of a high school student at quite a weird school. The name of the school is actually, Don Carey High School, but since everyone that attends this school, or has attended this school, was not really concerned by what was going on within the school and acted more like a zombie than a human, the school was named Don't Care High. Yet, this all changes when Paul Abram's moved from Saskatoon, Atlanta to New York City, where he will alter the course of things. Paul, one of the main characters, managed to modify life, in Don Cary High School, along with two other people, Shelton Pryor and Mike Otis. When Paul was accompanied by Shelton (who showed Paul the best way through Don Carey High) Paul, caused a lot of trouble although he knew right from wrong which Sheldon didn't. During his first days at his new school, Paul acted like the timid kid, however as soon as he made friends he changed and devoted himself into changing the turmoil within the school. Paul was nicknamed "ambition" because he was the only person attending that school including the teachers, that had ambition in him. Shelton and Paul are actually the two heroes of this novel. As a matter of fact without their keenness the school would had have never participated at the science fair, the basketball league, or had renovated itself. If it wasn't for these two young men who sought life in a different way. Paul and his friend got every person in the school have faith in themselves.
This is the second novel, that I have read, by Gordon Korman. I really appreciate his writing and I really cherished reading Don't Care High. I truly recommend this book to any teenager in high school, who will really enjoy reading about this school. I have to congratulate Korman, who manages to create interesting characters who epitomize all kinds of teenagers of today although the book was written in the 80's. To finish off, I will quote a very significant sentence which Korman has said and that you will have to remember, "the only way to get through high school alive was by laughing."

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Histerical
I discovered Gordon Korman in Jr. High and now as a college student his books continue to make me laugh. Often out loud. This book is classic Gordon Korman, and I think anyone would find it worth reading over and over again.

This is a tale of teenage apathy taken to its most extreme point and the mission of several students to change the world around them; to make their fellow students care about their school. It begins as a joke and grows into a mission.

As usual, Korman manages to mix realistic teenage attitudes with slightly absurd situations - no school like this could really function. The characters get into situations that are impossible, but they do it in probable ways. Korman is the master of the snowballing disaster - one small thing inevitably leads to chaos.

This book is among his best along with 'Son of Interflux' (my personal favorite), 'A Semester in the Life of a Garbage Bag', and 'I Want to Go Home'.

5-0 out of 5 stars you cannot buy a better young adult book than this!
this book may be absolutely perfect!the story of a misplaced transfer student coping with the most apathetic high school ever created is fantastic!paul, our hero, and sheldon, his guide to "don't care high" create a fictional persona for the most apathetic student in the high school and use it to transform the lives of everyone around them.even the side stories of auntie nancy and her disasters in suburbia and the outrageous neighbors outside paul's windows are unforgettable!read this book as soon as you can get your hands on it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You Want This Book
Words cannot describe how I feel about this book; I read it in high school, and it's phemonenal, it's fantasic, it's amazing. It's a story that takes place in 1987 Long Island, which is the best possible time for this story. The town the characters live in is a fictional town called DeWitt, but it is right next to Seaford, which is actually a real town. The entire story has a good, homey feel to it and it was just a pleasure reading. It needs to go back in print. I'm two seconds from starting a petition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book.
OK, to everyone reading this review of the book. Listen - this is one of the best books that you will ever read. It is a book for young adults that you will read many, many times and enjoy more each time. It is a very funny but down to Earth book in a homely setting in Long Island. Just the fact that it is out of print is a crime. This book needs to be put back into print. I would like to see more of Raymond Jardine, although I do not know if I would like to see a movie of it because I'm pretty comfortable with what I envision in my head about this book. A sequel, however, would be welcomed. In conclusion, read this book. You'll thank me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Korman's best, but still worth reading
While this is not Korman's best work, it was the first indication that he could do something more complex, and more serious, than the Bruno and Boots series that made him famous.

Korman was one of the few authors that I looked forward to reading when I was getting too old for kids books and was still too young for adult novels. His appeal is his humor, which is sophiticated enough to appeal to jaded teens.

This book is full of that same quirky humor, which is embodied in the nonsensical poetry that is just obscure enough to sound "deep" and therefore avoid criticism:

Registration Day

On registration day at taxidermy school
I distinctly saw the eyes of the stuffed moose
Move.

The plot revolves around Sean Delancey and his trouble-courting friend Raymond Jardine, who find themselves getting sucked in deeper and deeper in an attempt to bring an obscure dead author back to life. Seemingly innocent white lies compound, until they're forced to take drastic measures to avoid severe consequences.

This book is good because the quirky characters and "prank" style action keep the pages turning, and the humorous writing doesn't get in the way of the interesting story. I wouldn't recommend that you make this your first Gordon Korman book (No Coins Please is probably a better place to start, depending on how old you are), but if you're a fan of his writing, this is another solid entry in his work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A SEMESTER IN THE LIFE OF A GARBAGE BAG
This book is about a teen. Sean Delancy the main person of the book. He is trying to win a trip to Theamelpos which is a Greek island. The class he is trying to win it in is English class. He must write a essay to be able to win the trip. His luck is bad. You must read the book to yourself to be able to find out if he win the trip or not. I would recomend this book to any one whose life is hard as an eleventh grader.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest
This book is one of the greatest. Gordon Korman is, in my opinion, the best fiction author of the 20th and 21st centuries. I LOVE his books, and wish all the great old ones were back in print. I highly recommend his books to all the readers I meet. Thankfully, among my siblings and I, we have several of the old books, but I wish they were all more readily available, as we don't have some of our favorites. I don't think words can adequately express how beloved these books are; they are a delightful read. The person who decided they should go out of print must be insane or have no taste. If I were a school administrator, I would have all the children read these books, especially this one. They are a shining star among the trash that is out there today for young people. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Literatury Masterpiece
The following, an excerpt from Son of Inteflux, must rank as one of the greatest quotes in modern Young Adult Fiction.

"I can't stand the sight of Long Island!" Johnny announced with much emphasis as he and Simon gathered equipment for their first experiment. "What a hole!"
Stunned that Johnny should feel moved to make such a statement, apropos of nothing, Simon could only manage a week, "Huh?"
Johnny pointed out the window. "Look at that. It makes me sick. A plastic civilization with paper dolls for people. They're all dead out there. They think they're alive, but they're dead. The only thing that's real on Long Island is the boredom. That's it. Nothing else."
"Uh - uh - is there somewhere - better?"
The sheer absurdity of this question caused Johnny to squeeze his eyedropper, spraying vicious red liquid on Simon's shoes. "The city, man! New York! That's what life is about. But not the city they show in the tourist booklets; the real city! Tenement housing -cockroaches - rats! That's real! To freeze all winter and sweat all summer, and write great songs by the light of a bare bulb in an eight-by-eight cold-water walk-up with crumbling plaster and bad plumbing! That's living!"
Simon was sure it wasn't, but said nothing and concentrated on applying the liquid to the leaf on his slide. There was no reaction from the leaf, but his shoes where beginning to steam.
"In the city, if you've got something to say, you go right ahead and say it - in five-foot letters on the subway wall. On Long Island you don't say anything. You sit at home worrying because you didn't buy your kid a personal computer when he was three, so he won't get into the college of his choice, and he'll end up stupid and have to wear plaid shirt forever. In the city, you wake up because they're breaking pavement outside, or because somebody heaved a brick through the front window of the delicatessen you live over. On Long Island, you sleep through the alarm on your fifteen-hundred dollar Piaget watch, but some poor dog half a block away is driven crazy by the sound and smashes his head against a fence until his brains are scrambled. I hate Long Island!"
Simon, weary of the speech, and more then a little nervous about his shoes, said, "If you hate it here so much, why don't you move to the city?"
"Because my mother says if I move out before I graduate, no one's going to feed my fish."
"Oh."

5-0 out of 5 stars :)
--Simon Irving has never liked his father's massive international company, Interflux, which makes minor pieces of major things. After spotting a small piece of land which Interflux has planned to build a major factory on but which does not own, Simon buys the land with the entire Student Council money account, starts "Antiflux", puts up various shops and museums as Anitflux bends the rules of owning a piece of land, and overall, protests against his father. --This produces a hilarious novel that is hard to put down! --Marisa

5-0 out of 5 stars A genuine classic
I can't imagine why this book has been allowed to go out of print. It is a genuine classic and a great personal favorite.

A young man learns all about friendship, loyalty, his talents (both in the arts and in the leadership department) and his family, while at the same time waging war against an "opressive mega-corporation".

Oh, and his father is the CEO.

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARITY AND SOUL
I laughed, I cried... okay, actually I laughed so hard that I cried!!I consider every Gordon Korman book a must-read, but this is just "un"typical enough to delight die-hard Korman fans like myself. The master of comedic storytelling has masterfully woven a typically bizarre story (complete with a new plethora of crazy characters--some crazier than others) and given it a great deal of heart as well. It's hard to believe the "great organizing principle of the universe" has allowed this book to go out of print. If you see it, grab it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great ten years later!
