5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Document of a Titan by Someone Who Knew Him
Translations of works into English by and about the great Polish doctor, educator, and social worker Janusz Korczak are very hard to come by.For a person who does not speak Polish to have access to a biography of this humanitarian is a treat to be savored.Although Betty Jean Lifton's "The King of Children" remains the most authoritative biography on Korczak in English, Ms. Olczak's book is well worth having a supplement for the person who wants to know more about this great man.

Most people who have heard about Janusz Korczak (Henryk Goldszmit) know him from decriptions of him during his years in the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II and how he refused offers of shelter in safer areas because he refused to abandon the orphans in his care. His march, leading the orphan children in serene dignity to the cattle trains waiting to take them to the Nazi death camp of Treblinka, certainly makes for an unforgettable and compelling image. However, there is so much more to "Mister Doctor," as his pupils called him, and this book tells the story of his life, philosophy, and dreams.Educators, social workers, policy makers, and parents - in short, anyone who cares for and about children - should be familiar with his methods and philosophies of raising and educating children. It is a great pity that most of his original writings have not yet been translated into English. All in all, Hanna Olczak (Hanna Mortkowicz-Olcakowa) does an admirable job of covering Korczak's entire life, from his ancestry and sad childhood to his journeys while studying medicine to his establishment of the Orphan's Home to his religious beliefs, writings, and stint as radio personality ("The Old Doctor") to his final years in the Warsaw Ghetto, where he continued to manage an orphanage to give the child victims a life of dignity in their terrible last years.

Long out of print, this book can be hard to find and somewhat expensive. For the admirerer of Janusz Korczak, this is a treasure worth having. ... Read more

Excerpt: Polish citizens have the world's highest count of individuals awarded medals of Righteous among the Nations, given by the State of Israel to non-Jews who saved Jews from extermination during the Holocaust. There are 6,195 Polish men and women recognized as "Righteous" to this day, amounting to over 25 per cent of the total number of 22,765 honorary titles awarded already. It is estimated that in fact hundreds of thousands of Poles concealed and aided hundreds of thousands of their Polish-Jewish neighbors. Many of these initiatives were carried out by individuals, but there also existed organized networks of Polish resistance who was dedicated to aiding Jewsmost notably, the egota organization. In German-occupied Poland the task of rescuing Jews was especially difficult and dangerous. All hou...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=16895716 ... Read more

The name originated from the book Janusz Korczak and the Pretty Swordsweeperlady by Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. In 1890s he studied in the Flying University. Product Description
... Read more
