Probably one of the best "assigned reading" books I wound up reading in school. A gem of a book I never would have discovered on my own as my normal reading habits back then were King and Koontz. Excerpt: Thomas Clement "Tommy" Douglas, PC, CC, SOM (20 October 1904 24 February 1986) was a Scottish-born Baptist minister who became a prominent Canadian social democratic politician. As leader of the Saskatchewan Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) from 1942 and the seventh Premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961, he led the first socialist government in North America and introduced universal public healthcare to Canada. When the CCF united with the Canadian Labour Congress to form the New Democratic Party, he was elected as its first federal leader and served in that post from 1961 to 1971. He is warmly remembered for his folksy wit and oratory with which he expressed his determined idealism, exemplified by his fable of Mouseland. In 1930 Douglas married Irma Dempsey, a music student at Brandon College. They had one daughter, actress Shirley Douglas, and they later adopted a second daughter Joan, who became a nurse. His grandson is the actor Kiefer Sutherland. He was voted "The Greatest Canadian" of all time in a nationally televised contest organized by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 2004. The miniseries Prairie Giant: The Tommy Douglas Story, was filmed between February and May 2005 and aired on CBC Television in two parts on 12 March and 13, 2006. Tommy Douglas was born in Falkirk, Scotland in 1904. In 1910, his family immigrated to Canada, where they settled in Winnipeg. Just before he left Scotland, Douglas fell and injured his knee. Excerpt: Ronald Chesney (born 1922) and Ronald Wolfe (born 8 August 1924) are British TV comedy screenwriters, best known for their popular 1960s / 1970s sitcoms The Rag Trade and On The Buses. Chesney left school at the age of 16 and became a professional harmonica player. He was declared unfit to serve in World War II because of illness. He began to write potential radio scripts for the BBC where he came into contact with future writing partner Ronald Wolfe. Wolfe was born in London and served in World War II as a radio engineer. In the early 1950s he began to contribute to radio scripts, and his long and fruitful partnership with Chesney began. Wolfe is the cousin of actor Warren Mitchell The first major television series for Chesney and Wolfe was ITV's Educating Archie, in 1958, which featured ventriloquist Peter Brough and his puppet Archie Andrews. Chesney and Wolfe were also involved in writing the original radio version of the series. Two years earlier in 1956 they had written a one-off special for the BBC entitled Here's Archie, which also featured Brough - and his dummy - and Irene Handl. In 1961 the duo created the influential The Rag Trade, starring Peter Jones, Miriam Karlin and Reg Varney. Written for the BBC, this comedy was set in a working class environment and featured strong roles for the female actors, which was unusual for the time. Set in a fabric workshop - Fenner Fashions - it centred on the battles and conflicts between the bosses and the workers, and contained a certain degree of social commentary.
