Product Description
A complete catalogue of motion picture techniques for filmmakers. It concentrates on the 'storytelling' school of filmmaking, utilizing the work of the great stylists who established the versatile vocabulary of technique that has dominated the movies
since 1915. This graphic approach includes comparisons of style by interpreting a 'model script', created for the book, in storyboard form.

Amazon.com Review
Film Directing Shot by Shot offers a good introductionto the rudiments of film production. Steven D. Katz walks his readersthrough the various stages of moviemaking, advising them at every turnto visualize the films they wish to produce. Katz believes that one ofthe chief tasks of filmmaking is to negotiate between ourthree-dimensional reality and the two-dimensionality of the screen. Hecovers the number of technical options filmmakers can use to create asatisfying flow of shots, a continuity that will make sense to viewersand aptly tell the film's story. Katz provides in-depth coverage ofproduction design, storyboarding, spatial connections, editing, scenestaging, depth of frame, camera angles, point of view, and the varioustypes of stable compositions and moving camera shots. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Knowing What to Look for!
This book is an absolute must for filmmakers. It is instructive on what you expect from your cinamatographer and determining if your director understands the screenplay the way the writer wrote it.

All the emphasis is done with camera work. The director (if it is not you) must know where and how to place the emphasis.

But you have to know also. How else can you be critical of a shot or series of shots.

Steven Katz, the author of "Shot By Shot" understands what filmmaking is all about. That is why this book continues to sell year after year. "Shot by Shot" is the icon for scene setting and filmmaking.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great place to start.
I bought this for my teenage son who is an aspiring videographer.Anyone who is just getting started will benefit from this read.Even though it is dated in a few parts, overall it gives a very good explanation of the fundamentals of the film-making art. However, if you've already been shooting and have done some reading and studying on your own, or you've taken some film classes, the book is probably a review. If you want one book on the nuts and bolts of directing, this is a good one.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Bible throughout Film School
This book should be in any aspiring director or DP's arsenal. It has very thorough descriptions of how to stage, frame, and choreograph a shot.As a film school graduate and crew member on a hit TV show, I am continually shocked and amazed that there are working Director's in this Industry that seem to have no idea what the Axis of Action is... and rely heavily on their DP to essentially figure out the shot for them. A quick read of this book would bring them up to speed in no time. Easy to Understand, and completely thorough in covering most situations one would encounter in this business. This was my bible in school and I still refer to it these days as a brush up. Just buy it...you will not be disappointed!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mark F Armstrong, Filmmaker
A catalogue of visual techniques and their stylistic implications using a combination of storyboarding and still photos of shots that enables screenwriters, directors, and editors to excellently construct scenes.
Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to germs and health
The germs illustrations presented by Steve Bjorkman are amusing, consisting of strange looking creatures in pastel colors, reminding me of characters from the television show Sponge Bob Square Pants. The hands on the girls and boys in Germs!Germs!Germs! appear oddly shaped, as noted by the way the girl is holding the pencil on the cover.

Consisting of thirty-eight pages the Germs! Germs! Germs! motto throughout the book centers on, " We're on the ground. We're in the air. We're GERMS and we live everywhere!" Although germs cannot be seen, unless through a microscope they are still strong and mean. The drawing shows these rather odd sorted creatures with one or two eyes hovering about waiting for the right opportunity to spread Germs! Germs! Germs! on anyone.

One silly illustration has a yellow germ arriving at the front door, although no mention on how germs can be found on doorknobs. Germs! Germs! Germs! is more a book about what happens when the germs enter our body and reminds the reader of how germs jump about making people sick. My seven-year old has learned from reading the book "Germs are so nasty that they make you sick with a tummy ache and a cold".

It is possible that these illustrations along with the story can accomplish quick tooth brushing skills along with the use of tissues and proper hygiene. My son will grab Germs! Germs! Germs! to explain to a visitor how their germs can spread on clothing or furniture if that person has sneezed in his presence. This copy of the book has been to his classroom a few times to share with them just how mean germs can be as well as make you worse when you are sick.

Germs! Germs! Germs! is a handy book for my son who has learned a great deal from reading and following the journey these outrageously looking germs make through the pages. This makes a good introductory book for the age group of six to eight.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny and helpful
This is my 3 1/2 year old daughter's favorite book.We came across it at her preschool and have bought a copy for home.It has really improved her hygiene- she has become much more conscientious about brushing her teeth and washing her hands to "get rid of the bad germs"!Cute book, I'm buying a copy for friends, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and informative
My daughter and I love this book.At 5 years old, she easily understood what this book was trying to tell her. She's 8 now and we still read it. We even use some of the terminology to remind each other to stay healthy. She'll say "Mama, you're being a 'meal skipper'".It is NOT a scary book and it is a fun way to talk about germs with your kids.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book will make your little ones paranoid.
This book repeatedly emphasizes that germs are mean and that they are everywhere and that their sole purpose is to GET YOU. Very scary, actually. It puts them in your body, in your food, in the air and the miminally addressed topic of keeping yourself clean does not banish them. The next page just puts them all back somewhere else. It is not clear at all that handwashing, not letting other people sneeze on you, washing the floor, not leaving food overnight on the counter are effective ways to keep healthier. The emphasis is on a ton of very cute cartoony germs in multitudes. The health aspects are implied only--and poorly at that. Behaviors like nose-picking are RIDICULED. Not good for kids up to about age 10, especially if you're trying to teach health and cleanliness issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is wonderfully funny in its rhymes and pictures.
This book not only presents a serious topic in a very humorous and creative fashion, it contains some of the absolutely best germ cartoons I have ever seen. My first grader really enjoys it and I can't stop showing it off at work. I am an Infection Control RN specialist and find that it is perfect to communicate to healthcare workers the need to always wash their hands! I am getting copies for the hospital where I work. It is a super book! ... Read more

Product Description
Painter Among Poets: The Collaborative Art of George Schneeman is the first full presentation of the wide range of projects that Schneeman has co-created over the past 35 years. Painter Among Poets not only investigates Schneeman's signature enthusiasm for free-wheeling artistic collaboration, it also considers his work as part of the remarkable tradition of poet/painter collaboration that grew out of 19th- and 20th-century modernism. Always open to spontaneity and engagement, Schneeman encouraged poets to cross over into his dominion and contribute visual elements to the projects in order to create a surprising work of art that neither artist nor poet could have done alone. Painter Among Poets offers the reader a behind-the-scenes look at the high-wire process of collaboration as an outgrowth of Schneeman's friendships with poets Bill Berkson, Ted Berrigan, Michael Brownstein, Tom Clark, Edwin Denby, Larry Fagin, Dick Gallup, Allen Ginsberg, Ted Greenwald, Steve Katz, Lewis MacAdams, Alice Notley, Ron Padgett, Harris Schiff, Peter Schjeldahl, Tom Veitch, Anne Waldman, Lewis Warsh, and many others. Twelve of Schneeman's collaborators contribute essays and remembrances to this volume, which also features an essay by Carter Ratcliff, an extensive conversation between Schneeman and Padgett, a detailed checklist of the artist's collaborations, and a bibliography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Katz smokes what the cat dragged in.
SWANNY'S WAYS is, among other things, a cattle-run of characters so warm they sit on your knee as you read.Through a series a character-rich vignettes linked by Swanny's quest for a lost love, Katz's fiction is a twirl of ontology, memory, love, and forgetting better even than Milan Kindera's best even. ...
