3rd Grade Reading Level and Biased
Best translation ever of Josephus for normal people Dr. Maier's translation and commentary on Josephus is one of 3 modern translations I own, but is the only one I have used for the last 5 years. It brought Josephus to life for me and allowed me to read and understand this valuable primary source. Dr. Maier's work is generously accented with maps and illustrations and features a translation of Josephus that is abridged and therefore readable. Dr. Maier can be trusted to weed out the useless verbosity of the original text, as he is a leading scholar on early Roman Imperial history. Sell your other versions of Josephus and buy this one and then you may actually start to use Josephus to accent your study of the Bible. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description As a Jewish eyewitness who was given access to Vespasian’s campaign notebooks, Josephus is our only source of information for the war of extermination that ended in the destruction of Jerusalem and its Temple, and the amazing times in which he lived. He is of vital importance for anyone interested in the Middle East, Jewish history, and the early history of Christianity. Customer Reviews (9)

Editorial Review Product Description Josephus, soldier, statesman, historian, was a Jew born at Jerusalem about 37 CE. A man of high descent, he early became learned in Jewish law and Greek literature and was a Pharisee. After pleading in Rome the cause of some Jewish priests he returned to Jerusalem and in 66 tried to prevent revolt against Rome, managing for the Jews the affairs of Galilee. In the troubles which followed he made his peace with Vespasian. Present at the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, he received favours from these two as emperors and from Domitian and assumed their family name Flavius. He died after 97. As a historical source Josephus is invaluable. His major works are: History of the Jewish War, in seven books, from 170 BCE to his own time, first written in Aramaic but translated by himself into the Greek we now have; and Jewish Antiquities, in twenty books, from the creation of the world to 66 CE. The Loeb Classical Library edition of the works of Josephus also includes the autobiographical Life and his treatise Against Apion. Customer Reviews (3)
Loeb Classical Library
Josephus, The Life Against Apionvolume I
Indispensible for serious study of the New Testament The translation is somewhat dated, but more reliable than the abridged Penguin paraphrase and much more readable than Whiston's 1737 workhorse. This volume becomes easily worth $20+ if one knows a little Greek, though. One can really do good scholarly work with Josephus' writings for a mere $280 for all 13 of them. The Loeb volumes on Josephus are indispensible for understanding the political realities of first-centuryJudaism(s). Josephus is not the best historian who ever lived, because he is biased, self-aggrandizing and transparently apologetic for the aristocracy and priestly classes in Judea. But the fact of the matter is that we don't have anything else which begins to offer as much detail about first-century Judea as Josephus' writings. Steve Mason's "Josephus and the New Testament" should be on your shelf if you want to study Josephus, too. His theory about the author of Luke-Acts having relied on Josephus is overdone, but otherwise his work is greatly enlightening. ... Read more |

Editorial Review Product Description Throughout Christian history, the works of Josephus have been mined for the light they shed on the world of the New Testament. Josephus tells us about the Herodian family, the temple, the Pharisees, the Sadducees, and the Essenes. He mentions James the brother of Jesus, John the Baptist, and even Jesus himself. In Josephus and the New Testament, an internationally acknowledged authority on Josephus introduces this first-century Jewish historian to readers who want to begin to explore his witness to environment in which early Judaism and Christianity took shape. Editorial Review Product Description To prove his sons’ treachery, Herod embellished a letter. To certify his history of Vespasian’s Judaean campaign, Josephus marshaled epistolary testimony. To alleviate a domestic problem, the Israelite king David sent a missive with a man it marks for death. Arguing for the importance of the first-century historian Josephus to the study of classical and Hellenistic literature, Tragedy, Authority, and Trickery investigates letters in Josephus’ texts. The author breaks new ground by analyzing classical, Hellenistic, and Jewish texts’ use of letters, comparing those texts to Josephus’ narratives, a virtual archive containing hundreds of letters. An external voice similar to speeches, embedded letters raise questions of authority, drive and color dramatic scenes, and function at textual and meta-textual levels to deceive their readers. Josephus, contextualized in a complex intellectual and cultural milieu, sustains and develops epistolarity in important ways that will be of interest to classicists, historians, theologians, and comparatists. |
